Rivers Cuomo: We Ripped Off “The Sweater Song” From Metallica

Last week Rolling Stone chatted up Rivers Cuomo about Weezer’s new album Raditude. Near the end we asked about the 15th anniversary of their debut single “Undone – The Sweater Song,” which he now admits is “almost a complete rip-off” of Metallica’s 1986 classic “Welcome Home (Sanitarium).”

” ‘The Sweater Song’ was the first Weezer song I ever wrote, back in 1991,” Cuomo says. “I was trying to write a Velvet Underground-type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that riff. And it just feels so classic to me, even now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you’re just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn’t until years after I wrote it that I realized it’s almost a complete rip-off of ‘Sanitarium’ by Metallica. It just perfectly encapsulates Weezer to me — you’re trying to be cool like Velvet Underground but your metal roots just pump through unconsciously.”

Sweaters we wish had been undone: a gallery.

While on the topic of the old days, we also asked Cuomo about former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp — who left the band after Pinkerton to form the Rentals and eventually filed a lawsuit against his former bandmates over royalties. Five years ago Sharp and Cuomo buried the hatchet and played a few songs together at a college gig. Sharp even wrote on his blog that there was talk of him rejoining the band as an additional guitarist. What happened?

“We were just beginning to feel it out, and it didn’t pan out for one reason or another,” says Cuomo. Might he work with Sharp again? “I don’t know if there’s a lot of room for it anymore, especially now that I’ve got a two year old.” How about the possibility of him playing with Weezer again at some point in the future? “Seems unlikely,” says Cuomo. “But you never know.”

Uhh, different keys, different intervals, different tempo…but if he says so…

Maybe he needs to rip off Metallica more often since he’s written maybe 5 decent songs in the last 10 years.

Hey Jeff | 8/27/2009, 5:40 pm EST

Where’s your updated catalog of awesome songs you’ve written in the last 10 years? Oh, you don’t have one?

Kevin the Robot | 8/27/2009, 5:46 pm EST

What’s going to be on the deluxe edition of Pinkerton? I’m more excited about that than I am about their new album.

Jeff | 8/27/2009, 5:52 pm EST

Right, because as an American, I need to have an extensive musical catalogue to have musical opinions. Totally makes sense. Grow up :-)

Jeff | 8/27/2009, 6:01 pm EST

In America, we are entitled to our musical opinions regardless of the extent of our songwriting output (and even if Rolling Stone.com deletes said opinions).

Grow up :-)

Fred | 8/27/2009, 6:06 pm EST

Nah, Jeff, you’re just an idiot, American or otherwise.

Hey Jeff | 8/27/2009, 6:08 pm EST

Your musical opinions are hereby null and void.

boring | 8/27/2009, 6:22 pm EST

Weezer is just another pop band now. no more originality unfortunately. they were great for awhile though.

dan. | 8/27/2009, 6:39 pm EST

Um…So wait, you guys chatted with rivers about the new album yet you show us a conversation about a very old song?..

-_-

Jeff | 8/27/2009, 10:00 pm EST

Dan,

That’s because barring ‘This Is Such A Pity’, ‘Trouble Maker’, ‘Greatest Man Who Ever Lived’, and ‘Perfect Situation’, their new music isn’t really worth discussing.

And Fred, hey brah, what’s with the raditute? Heh…get it?

deeznuts | 8/27/2009, 10:13 pm EST

Wheezed out on Weezer? Try (the now defunct) The Rosenbergs.

WEEZIN | 8/28/2009, 10:23 am EST

Yeah, the Rosenbergs were a great Weezer-like band that shouldnt have broken up. Weezer continues to write great rock songs with intelligent lyrics. The red album was very original. If you dont like them, y r u wasting ur time here dissin them? Weezer has millions of fans and r still very relevant and will continue to be so.

Zach | 8/28/2009, 2:37 pm EST

I just did a comparison of the two. They’re similar, but not the same. Different key, different notes, there are some flourishes thrown into the Metallica that aren’t present in the Weezer.

wallytarkington | 8/28/2009, 5:35 pm EST

Ok, here’s where I defend a favorite band of mine to a bunch of people who have nothing better to do all day than read articles like this and post their unsolicited opinions. Weezer’s first album came out 15 years ago, they still sell records and book decent shows. What have you done lately? When’s your record droppin? What publication do you write for as a critic? Don’t bother to reply, I won’t read it anyway.

Jeff | 8/28/2009, 6:33 pm EST

Unsolicited opinions? This is a “Comments” section, in case you weren’t aware. Not everyone has to think like you.

bennie new york | 8/28/2009, 10:53 pm EST

I see some of the the similarities- a bit of a long intro, a second chorus longer than the first, and an extended outro. Other than that, The Sweater Song is not a rip-off. There’s the obvious difference in key, and you can’t get around the fact that Weezer is a very different band from Metallica. Metallica plays complex thrash metal, Weezer plays straight-ahead garage rock with pop hooks. Weezer could never make a song similar to Metallica even if they tried. Love both bands though.

To Jeff | 8/29/2009, 6:15 pm EST

DOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!!!

john | 8/30/2009, 1:52 am EST

i wish matt sharp were still in weezer…. imagine all those great records we would have!

Rivers | 8/30/2009, 8:14 pm EST

Hey guys, Ive been going through a tough time lately. Its hard to write good songs.

does nobody notice that the main guitar riffs are almost identical?

(…different keys, different intervals…) they are way similar!

Huh, metallica plays complex thrash!?!?! In my opinion they play not so complex speed metal with some thrash influences.

Hallie | 8/31/2009, 4:26 pm EST

Bring back Matt, he rocks!!!!

Craig T. | 9/1/2009, 9:31 pm EST

Both bands SUCK! . . . but Metallica sucks a little more . . . and I’ve never seen Weezer crying to their therapist. Not saying it didn’t happen . . . just hasn’t been committed to video. Metallica . . . like Spinal Tap but nowhere nearly as talented or amusing. If you’d like to hear some real metal . . . “Reign In Blood” is the undisputed pinnacle of “death”, “thrash”, “whatever” metal. EOM.

fuck urself | 9/2/2009, 11:53 am EST

lol… let’s recap… matt left cuz he had an ego and thought he could start a band that people would give a shit about. that didn’t happen so he came crawling back, but weezer didn’t need or want him anymore… that’s funny…

see you at the drive thru buddy

lame-itude | 9/2/2009, 1:23 pm EST

‘5 decent songs?’ Don’t you mean one lame song that he keeps putting new words to?

horje | 9/3/2009, 9:50 am EST

I wonder if Kurt Cobain cares…..

Mickie | 9/3/2009, 7:36 pm EST

For those with negative comments: If you dislike Weezer so much, why do you even bother reading anything about them? I dislike a lot of bands too, but I don’t waste my time reading, or even looking for articles on them or their lives. And when I do happen to come across said info, I disregard it completely.

Tim | 9/3/2009, 10:58 pm EST

Weezer is and always will be the greatest band ever.
Goodnight.

Anonymous | 9/5/2009, 8:32 pm EST

Never in my life would i ever dream that Weezer would be the source of such lame ass fandom and controversy, they’re just a band doing their thing.

Even if Rivers did rip it off, which I honestly can’t hear the song has always sounded more like I Bleed by Pixies, it doesn’t show that much.

Bands, especially those starting out, have a tendency to take things from bands they love and have left impressions on them .Nothing wrong with that at all, rock on Rivers.

chatwingol | 9/7/2009, 7:47 am EST

Kitt | 10/1/2009, 5:27 am EST

If you think Weezer’s albums have been lame, maybe you ought to check out the B-sides off some of the singles, because some of their best stuff never hit the airwaves (as always happens in our over-commercialized, riff-craving, pop-centric music market…God Bless America) and the Bonus tracks off the Red Album…hel-LO. Plus how could you leave out Heart Songs?

Don’t blame Weezer because you’re too lazy to do some digging.

And Make Believe didn’t suck at all anyway. Jeff beefs about the crappy music of Weezer and then points out some of the pop-iest songs they’ve put out. Shows your taste, dude. Guess you probably think Blue was their best work too (and not Pinkerton).

Samoys | 10/3/2009, 12:35 pm EST

lot about you

hey craig t | 10/11/2009, 10:02 pm EST

think about the meaning behind the music you listen to before you criticize weezer

Derp | 10/14/2009, 7:58 pm EST

I can’t speak for everyone, but I find with Weezer (and a lot of other bands) it takes listening to a song 3-5 times before I start to enjoy it, by the 50th time I can’t help but sing along to every word. Music doesn’t have to be intelligent for it to be good, and if you think it’s corney you aren’t being forced to listen (at least not by me).

upeople | 11/13/2009, 10:16 am EST

if you have right taste, swallow it if it’s sweet, spit out if it’s bitter. Weezer always rules.
