Bob Dylan Welcomes Guitarist Charlie Sexton Back Into His Band

When Bob Dylan resumes his never-ending tour October 5th in Seattle an old friend will be back in the band. Arc Angels guitarist Charlie Sexton, who played with Dylan from 1999 to 2002, has rejoined his group. Earlier this month Sexton sat in with Dylan in Round Rock Texas, causing rumors that a reunion was imminent. “I love and respect Bob and am very happy to be reunited with my friend onstage,” Sexton tells Rolling Stone. “I’m starting up with him for the fall tour and will carry on with him from there.” He’s unwilling to say any more about what brought him back. “I’ve never given an interview about Bob,” he says. “Ultimately he is my friend, and it’s not my place to talk about his business.”

The reunion comes at a busy time for Sexton. Earlier this year he reformed the blues-rock trio the Arc Angels alongside Doyle Bramhill II and Chris Layton. They’ve played a bunch of gigs and he is currently putting the finishing touches on a CD/DVD set for release in October. Despite re-joining Dylan — who tends to play about 100 shows as year — the Arc Angels will continue to tour and record during Dylan’s downtime. “Being a working musician or a producer or anything these days, being a fluctuating
business, you gotta work, you gotta shape-shift,” Sexton says. “You gotta do whatever it takes. Myself, the Arc Angels, most people I work with, we’re all lifers. It’s what we do. We just keep on going.”

Sexton’s tenure in Dylan’s band is widely seen as a highpoint in the never-ending tour. Click below to watch Dylan and Sexton perform “Brown Sugar” by the Rolling Stones:

Wow! Fabulous news! I saw Dylan in Dallas for the Love and Theft tour, with Charlie Sexton and Larry Campbell (the lineup featured in the video). They were a mercenary force. It was an unbelievably powerful show. Can’t wait to see them together again!

wicked messenger | 8/27/2009, 2:00 am EST

Unfortunately Larry no longer plays with Dylan. Among other projects he tours with Levon Helm. Maybe this will lure him back.

Joachim Neumann | 8/27/2009, 4:35 am EST

Good news, well, hope he will fit in the recent band. He will take over the place of Denny Freeman, so we have to wait. Anyway, that line-up with Larry Campbell was definitely one of the toughest bands Dylan ever was touring with.

IV | 8/27/2009, 7:48 am EST

Good to here. Saw the Sexton/Campbell line up a couple of times, and they would have some wicked arrangements with Campbell often busting out mandolin, fiddle, or pedal still. Should be a great boost, especially since Bob has been retreating behind the keyboards so much the last few years…

This is incredibly good news. A comeback as it has been rarely seen in Dylan’s touring band: such big names all of them, Jim keltner, Ian Wallace, Steve Douglas…and now Charlie. We can’t wait for the departure of D.F. and/or Stu Kimball. Really they should have been elsewhere ever since.

Go Bob. x

eye witness | 8/27/2009, 9:25 am EST

I was a witness at the round rock concert and it was fantastic. charlie continuosly approached dylan all night and seemed to be saying come on , don’t stop, lets rock. he even once put his foot up and kicked dylans piano refusing to let bob settle.
I hope he can continue to influence bob in this way becdause the result was awesome.

Welcome back Charlie. Now for the rest of the band. Stu and Donnie are such dead weight.Stu is a completely average guitarist and Donnie is so low in the mix that he is seldom even heard.
The only thing else to fix is the damaged vocal chords. It’s great news though.

Johnson | 8/27/2009, 9:49 am EST

Oh, I’m 100% CERTAIN of THAT.

Paul Metsa | 8/27/2009, 10:08 am EST

Charlie Sexton and GE Smith were two of the best guitarists his Bobness has ever had. So, bringing Sexton back is great news. Now it is time for Dylan to invite Bucky Baxter out of retirement, and start working on those great two and three part harmonies for those wonderful anthems we all dig.

Willie Wanker | 8/27/2009, 12:24 pm EST

good to see Kevin Bacon COUGH Charlie Sexton back in the band.

Scott Salzman | 8/27/2009, 12:32 pm EST

Hopefully he’ll be replacing Stu. It’s such a downer to watch him on stage. He always looks so miserable and insecure. Plus he rarely plays anything very interesting. charlie’s return is good news.

johnpilecki | 8/27/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Hope Larry can leave the Levon’s barn long enough to reignite the magic he provides with C.S. on the next leg of the tour.

GypsyDaisy | 8/27/2009, 2:33 pm EST

Wow you have come back for use in the Seattle area Good Cheers this time I want a back stage pass or better yet on the Bus or the hotel for a meet up again after all theses years greet…and be able to finally meet Charlies Since i have been pming him for years…Cheers

Mike | 8/27/2009, 2:52 pm EST

This is awesome. I hope Charlie gets to sing too… his harmonies are great with Bob and his playing blows those other guys away. The Larry/Charlie combo was part of the best band Bob has had since The Band. (well if you wanna argue about Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers back in the 80s, you have good reason) But this is awesome… can’t wait for the Phoenix show. Now I’m glad the original show was cancelled earlier this month and the Oct date was set. Can’t wait to see Charlie and Bob again.

Charlie | 8/27/2009, 3:16 pm EST

hello GypsyDaisy, this is Charlie…

it is finally time. also , you sound crazy.

also, this isn’t really Charlie. pleas don’t hurt him.

awesome he is back with Bob.

steve | 8/27/2009, 4:28 pm EST

this rendition of Brown Sugar is PATHETIC…. great band, terrible vocals… come ON.
I love Dylan, even his new stuff, but his voice can’t take the touring… dont believe me? just replay this video and listen.

deanoakwood | 8/27/2009, 6:39 pm EST

If Charlie is in, then which guitar player is out? I was hoping that this article would say if Stu Kimball or Denny Freeman was out. Denny played lead, so it makes sense for him to go.

I don’t know if there was a tension between Bob and the guitar players on this ‘09 tour, but Bob’s organ playing dominated the sound of the shows I went to.

Even as late as his Nov. ‘08 shows, the guitar players interjected great guitar solos and melodies into Bob’s new and old songs, but on the ‘09 tour there were few chances to solo over Dylan’s organ.

I would hope that Sexton would be allowed to bring the guitar melodies back into Dylan’s set. The ‘09 shows were a letdown of sorts because of this, but they were still great to attend.

deanoakwood | 8/27/2009, 6:46 pm EST

And steve…this isn’t even his song, why would you expect great singing from this song? Dylan doesn’t even sing like HE used to on recordings, so why compare it to the Stones?

We should just be lucky that Bob is out there so much touring, instead of going the way of Zeppelin or The Beatles/McCartney or Bob Seger or any other great band that stops touring or takes decades off in touring. After almost 50 years of singing and smoking cigs, we’d all be lucky to have vocal cords, let alone be able to tour.

Sergio Zurita | 8/27/2009, 7:13 pm EST

I love Sexton and Campbell, but Stu Kimball and Denny Freeman are great, too. I’ll miss Denny if he goes.

e. l. | 8/27/2009, 7:30 pm EST

Charlie is a great guitar player. Who was one of the guitar teachers that taught him how to play and exchange licks on the stage?…..Hmmmm, Denny Freeman perhaps? Denny Freeman is proud of his fellow guitar slinger. I can hardly wait to see what
Mr. Freeman has up his sleeve next.

Jesse | 8/27/2009, 10:27 pm EST

Word is that Denny will be the one to go.

I’m glad of the switch. Denny was solid, but kinda boring.

OMG, I love rock and admit to not being a Dylan fan (Beatles, Doors, Led Zep, VH) but this sounds absolutely horrible.
When Dylan was younger, he sounded completely different. And I know he is a terrific song writer but how do people tolerate his singing?
And now Dylan will sell out and put his voice on certain GPS devices. One strange dude…..

Johnson | 8/28/2009, 3:42 pm EST

rwt- ‘Cold irons bound’ I double dare anyone to admit that’s not a GREAT vocal.Play that loud. The man’s a GIANT.

rwt | 8/28/2009, 3:51 pm EST

It’s official – Charlie is in, Denny is out. I loved the Charlie-Larry-Dave-Tony band of ten years ago. Hung backstage with ‘em on 3-31-00 in Rochester, MN.

schmidty | 8/31/2009, 8:46 pm EST

What’s with all the neagativity?? I was at the concert in Round Rock when Charlie was with Dylan and it was pure soulful musical magic.

I saw Charlie and Denny play together last night at Antones. They tore it up! One the best shows I have ever seen. Oh yeah, Will Sexton was there shredding also!
