Many superfans compare listening to their favorite band to a religious experience. A church in Florida is taking that sentiment to the next level by introducing its congregation to a Sunday service that features the music and lyrics of Bono and Co., reports Twenty Four Bit. The rockin’ First United Methodist Church of Pensacola, Florida will host the U2charist — a play on the word Eucharist — which includes U2’s “One,” “With or Without You” and the service-opening prayer of “Beautiful Day.”

The debut U2charist in Pensacola took place August 23rd at First Methodist. The U.S. Episcopal Church first developed the U2charist in 2003, and the service was first conducted in Baltimore, Maryland, in April 2004. The celebration of U2’s music has since since spread worldwide, arriving in Pensacola last weekend. “It’s definitely something different,” First United’s Rev. Geoffrey Lentz told the Pensacola News Journal. “But U2’s music is so deeply spiritual that I think the corporate worship setting is the perfect place for it. It’s exciting for the oldest Protestant church in Pensacola to have a cutting edge worship service.” Lentz added that the U2charist appeals to a younger audience, and an average of 200 people attend the Sunday service.

Churches who hold the U2charist do not have to pay licensing fees for using U2’s music on the condition that the church donates any money raised by the service to charities benefiting the Millennium Development Goals, to which Bono is an ambassador. After completing the European leg of their 360° Tour, U2 will take inspirational songs and the church of “the spaceship” overseas for a North American tour that kicks off September 12th in Chicago.

Get a look at the 360° Tour in action in photos from the trek’s opening night.

as if Bono’s head needs to be any bigger…
dont get me wrong, he has done and is doing great things with charities and campaigns but i think it is time U2 needs to just fade away.

Never mind going to those churches to pray to God. Let’s all go to church and pray to the Almighty Savior Bono! Oh dear Bono hear my prayer, forgive my trespasses oh most holy one and lead me not into other non-U2 bands and deliver me from evil. Amen! Praise be to Bono!

You guys beat me to it ! I love it !!! Bono thinks he’s God, etc.

Freddy Cougar | 8/25/2009, 5:32 pm EST

U2 is the best band out there. Period.

It never ceases to amaze me that U2 and Bono generate so much jealousy. Y’all should just deal with the fact that Bono and the boys are gonna be around for a while. Glad to see a church using their music.

U2 is a great live band, saw them in Tampa about 8 years ago, one of the best shows I’ve ever seen

Rod | 8/26/2009, 6:00 am EST

Great idea!! God used their music for my own conversion to christianity 25 years ago!!!!

Being from Dublin and living not far from Bono, I have had the privilege of knowing him for over 20 years. He is the most down to earth man you could meet. He is loyal to his old mates, a great Dad and sooo lucky to have met Ali (and her him)- above all his lyric and music stands the test of time because he and his band mates are possibly the best at what they do and that is the point isn’t it their music. A MUST see when they reach the sates – “LIVE” a spiritual experience it must be said.. and if our local church played their music I’d go back! Just genius!

I’m a committed Christian because Bono decided to pen the lyrics to “Until the End of the World” on “Achtung, Baby.” It changed my life forever to know as a teenager that Christians can be smart, genuinely creative and modern in expressing their faith. Unfortunately, the church is still realizing this as a whole. (But, change is in the air. Some cool things are happening.)

Yes, U2´s music is deeply spiritual. In every record there are those moments that make me feel joy and shivers. I´m a Christian, but I believe that also atheists can find themselves in U2 songs, because I believe that spirituality is in EVERYONE.

When my older sister gave me “The Joshua Tree” as a birthday present in 1989 I knew absolutely nothing about U2 apart from two or three songs, but I felt that spirituality from the very beginning. U2 have been accused of a “sell-out” for so many times. I don´t wanna sound arrogant, but as a listener I can feel if music expresses true feelings or not.

I´m Austrian and in July I saw another unforgettable U2 concert in Berlin. It´s great that this band still delivers that intense music after all those years. And I had the luck to get Bono´s autograph and to talk to him for the first time (okay, I admit, this was only one question, but there were so many people…).

This is a cool idea and yes I’m saying that because I’m a U2 purist. The Joshua Tree Album and even more specifically, their first three albums are very spiritual. Listen to 40 off of the Under A Blood Red Sky Album. Seeing the band for the first time in two weeks in Chicago.

give me a break

How can anyone, spiritual or not, negate an article that shows how music can touch people many different ways and with many different venues? The posters that poke fun and use profound words like “gross” are just showing their ignorance and intolerance. What have you done to better mankind lately?

Pam Bonamusica | 8/28/2009, 5:44 am EST

Playing U2 songs in churches is a great idea. Spirituality is one reason why I love U2´s music so much. I find myself in many songs and when I listen to them on bad days I start feeling much better. U2 don´t have a choice but to lift me up! Songs like “Grace” and “Kite” have very deep messages and especially NLOTH includes some of the most spiritual pieces of music I´ve ever heard. On this album Bono wrote his lyrics from the perspective of other people like a desperate war veteran. I think that many U2 songs deal with one thing: How to turn sorrow into hope or even joy. This is something very spiritual.

Oh my what have you done, the bible says that you test every spirit, it doesn’t mean its spiritual it comes from God, there are many kinds of spirits.
you don’t hype a church w/ secular rocks, only by the preaching of the gospel & a leading of the Holy spirit that will truly build a faith.
To the pastor, Preach Faith, Preach Jesus, Worship the Holy Spirit.
From the comments i’ve read, all i saw was U2 7 Bono, Where is Jesus?
God have mercy

jerry | 9/1/2009, 8:05 pm EST

bono you rock

Christian | 9/4/2009, 4:25 am EST

Bono is an antichrist. That’s why Rolling Stone likes this story.

forthelove | 9/20/2009, 11:29 pm EST

who says the pastor isn’t preaching faith and Jesus? just because a group of people are able to think open-mindedly and find good in a song, or a person, doesn’t mean Jesus isn’t there. we need change in the world, correct? well, here’s one change-unconventional worship music. who is to say that they are not worshipping Jesus? how do we know that the Holy Spirit was not leading this entire service? the lyrics of U2 are their own interpretation of the Bible and life. maybe we should try to interpret as well instead of judging how others worship.

I was there! FUMC rocks!

Methodist Youth Leader | 9/25/2009, 1:16 pm EST

Im a youth leader at a methodist church in houston, tx and I think this is a great idea. Church’s are always looking for ways to reach out to the community. Well I think this church found a great way! People express their beliefs in different ways. U2 does it through song.

I like that this church is having a open mind. I think you need one to be a Christian. If you are closed minded Christian you block out those who need Jesus the most!

When Jesus went around preaching the Gospel he was considered a “Rebel” because he did it on the Sabbath! Who’s to say Jesus isn’t U2 to bring people to him? What Jesus did would of been considered secular in those days!

Methodist Youth Leader | 9/25/2009, 1:17 pm EST

My edit: I meant to say. Who’s to say that Jesus isn’t using U2 to bring people to him?

Methodist Lay Leader | 9/25/2009, 3:37 pm EST

Bono said in a recent interview that he doesn’t go to church. Would that make him a HYPOCRITE?

Methodist Lay Leader | 9/25/2009, 3:41 pm EST

The wisdom of Jesus. The Gospel reverses the values of the world. What is the Gospel? The cross! What is the cross? The way up is down. The way to power is to serve. The way to life is the willingness to die. The way to spiritual wealth is to admit you’re spiritually poor. The last shall be first. The way to become utterly royal is to cast your crown before him. That’s my Jesus.

David | 9/25/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Maybe he does not go to church because he worships God other places. I mean, it this “If there is no steeple, then there is no church, there is no worship, and God is deaf”?

DGP | 9/25/2009, 3:47 pm EST

SO you are saying that Bono said nothing more satanic than “I do not go to church”?

DGP | 9/25/2009, 3:52 pm EST

The generations coming up do not seem to be respectful of the prior generation’s religious calendar, vocabulary, rituals, walls or any other arbitrary rules that clutter up love of God and each other. Oh my, they want to change it and take ownership of it!

CAHG | 9/25/2009, 4:25 pm EST

There is no set definition for Christian music… its the lyrics that make a song Christian or secular…some of U2’s music contains biblical references and has brought many to Christ- period. See you guys in heaven where we can all sing praises of all kinds to our Lord and Creator forever. Amen.

Me | 9/25/2009, 6:14 pm EST

You ended with “Thats my Jesus!” Methodist Lay Leader. Guess what, Jesus if for everyone no just you!

Methodist Lay Leader | 9/25/2009, 7:03 pm EST

Of course there’s room for everyone at Jesus table. We can all have a personal relationship with the Master. Just because I tell you about my relationship doesn’t mean it’s just mine only. Peace and love to you brother.

44 Year Old Methodist | 9/26/2009, 5:52 am EST

I have been a Methodist all my life and have enjoyed U2’s music since the 80’s. Needless to say I find U2’s music very spiritual and I know U2’s music can go to people’s hearts. I believe God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit can be found anywhere you can tap into it. I am also involved in my local church which lately has been making me understand why people take a break from going to church or leaving it forever.

SS | 9/26/2009, 12:27 pm EST

I actually saw the interview where Bono spoke about going to church. It was part of a leadership conference hosted by Willow Creek Community Church. What he said is he goes to different churches depending on where he is. Sometimes it’s a Southern Baptist church, sometimes it’s a grand cathedral in a big city. He said that he likes to attend churches that are spiritually alive and he doesn’t worry about what denomination they are. You have to give him credit – so many celebrities do nothing with their wealth and power except support their own lavish lifestyles. This man is passionate about helping others. He sets a good example for all of us. I know next to nothing about his music but I was impressed with him.
