Bob Dylan has made his latest unpredictable career move: Rolling Stone has learned that Bob Dylan will release a Christmas album October 13th. Entitled Christmas in the Heart, the collection will feature holiday standards including “Must Be Santa,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Here Comes Santa Claus.” All U.S. royalties from the collection will benefit the charity Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Other proceeds from the disc will benefit hunger relief organizations around the world. Get a first look at the album art here.

Look back at Bob Dylan on the cover of Rolling Stone.

Although Dylan famously converted to Christianity in the late 1970s, he’s widely believed to have switched back to Judaism years ago — he appeared on Orthodox fundraising telethons in the 1980s and has attended Yom Kippur services in the past few years.

Dylan recently wrapped his ballpark tour with John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson (read the RS report here), during which he was approached by New Jersey cops for a “suspicious” pre-show walk. He hits the road next for tour that kicks off October 5th in Seattle.

Just yesterday, Rolling Stone published a gallery of iconic images of Dylan (and Johnny Cash and Miles Davis) shot by Columbia’s photographer Don Hunstein. Check them out here.

Come on, Rolling Stone editors, what’s your source. This rumour has been going around for awhile. What’s your soruce, why should it be a reliable news-item?

Secret Handshakes | 8/25/2009, 10:19 pm EST

Bob told Newsweek in 1997, upon the arrival of “Time Out Of Mind”, that he finds religion “in the music”. Enough said.

Gotta love Bob, he always veers off course (and creates the new road for everyone else)

Gotta love this man! He never does what you expect!

maybe DYLAN is GOD.It is very possible.Think about it.

Everything Dylan does generates a media buzz. I don’t think any other Christmas album will ever receive as much critical attention. This is great. By the way, it is probably, in part, a gift to his good friend, the producer of his radio show Eddie G. who is the world’s #1 Christmas music collector.

Dylanesque1 | 8/26/2009, 10:57 am EST

Rolling Stone you are the best. I like anything and everything Bob Dylan has ever done. He is a masterpiece and amazing. Saw him in Jersey and he was ON! Charity involved just gives you a glimpse into the heart of this wonder, Mr Bob Dylan.

Dylanesque1 | 8/26/2009, 10:58 am EST

Bob Dylan is a treasure.

Bagdasarian | 8/26/2009, 12:30 pm EST

So is he going to sing the part of Simon, Theodore, or – hopefully – Alvin?

Sleigh Lady Sleigh?

Francis Pharcellus | 8/26/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.
He exists most certainly as Bob Dylan. He’s given the world a lot of joy for a lot of years. Leave out a plate of cookies for him when he passes through your town.

Harry | 8/26/2009, 4:50 pm EST

The man is Jewish, it makes no sense

Dan-o | 8/26/2009, 5:27 pm EST

I don’t understand the confusion over being Jewish and doing Christmas songs. Didn’t stop Irving Berlin. Barbara Streisand had a great Christmas album too.

Celebrating a man who preached a message of peace seems very Bob to me, no matter what denomination he may be.

Anonymous | 8/26/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Gorgeous man.

Tim | 8/26/2009, 7:02 pm EST

What will Pete Seeger say?

Hmmm…how about good on you Bob for helping out starving people.

This is a very humble and generous move by Bob. I am so much more excited for this album now.

JohnnyRussia | 8/26/2009, 10:00 pm EST

Rob Geurtsen: “what’s your source?”

Hey dumbass: visit Dylan’s website.

Then get a clue.

Josh | 8/26/2009, 10:36 pm EST

Harry, I hope you’re not suggesting that it doesn’t make sense for a Jew to be charitable…

Phil Ochs | 8/27/2009, 12:17 am EST

Didn’t Dylan get his start by rebelling against the very people who would put out folksy li’l Christmas albums?

Irving Berlin? Streisand?

Maybe not worthy of a “JUDAS”! but certainly a WTF?

Benton Arsenic | 8/27/2009, 7:48 am EST

Dylan got his start rebelling against people who did folksy little Christmas albums? Not really. Dylan’s always been a bit more complex than the cliches that some folks still run to for a quick 20-second summation of nearly a half century of music and innovation.

Chilly Billy | 8/27/2009, 1:11 pm EST

Hey everyone: Please stop calling Rob Geurtsen a dumbass for such snotty doubting of Dylan’s Xmas album. He’s probably only 8 years old.

POSSUM | 8/27/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Good for him, I have nothing against this as long as it all goes to charity he knows most people in the west are Christians and so a Christmas album will sell a lot making more money for charity.
a good man Bob Dylan never a sell out like a lot of stars are

Django48 | 8/27/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Dylan is THE ultimate living chronicler of American vernacular music. Like it or not, Christmas music is as much a part of this culture as Muddy Waters, Woody Guthrie or the Mississippi Sheiks. Why not?

BridgeGalleryAz | 8/28/2009, 6:56 pm EST

I hope Bob Dylan’s Christmas album includes Jackson Browne’s haunting Christmas chestnut, “The Rebel Jesus”. It would be a wish come true if Bob performs the song with its gifted author. May the season be merry and bright and a joy for all.

Andy G. | 8/29/2009, 2:05 pm EST

WOW! Now THAT’S a career move! Well, can’t say I saw that coming, but if he treats those songs as he did the ones on his last three or four albums, it should be really nice to play on a snowy December night with some friends and a big vat of eggnog! I’ll buy one! Can’t get enough Dylan these days … I think he’s done some of his best work since releasing “Time Out of Mind,” so why not a Christmas disc!

Dave the Rave | 8/30/2009, 4:22 pm EST

Love Mr Dylan. Once played 4 straight hours of Dylan on my college radio show back in ‘69….but his voice has slipped into an almost un -intelligible gravelly sound. Very hard to listen to without wincing and wishing for earlier days……….

KPS | 8/31/2009, 1:48 pm EST

I work for a Food Bank in rural Northeast Tennessee. This fundraising effort is great news for the Feeding America Network of Food Banks especially here in our rural area. We are seeing more and more people in need of food assistance and monetary donations help the most. Thanks Bob…come see us sometime!

Rich C. | 9/2/2009, 4:54 pm EST

Hard to tell if Dylan does or does not believe in Jesus from his comments, but he still does songs from his “Christian” albums, including “Every Grain of Sand” “Gotta Serve Somebody” and “I Believe In You” during the 2009 tour.

James Shelton | 9/5/2009, 3:18 am EST

even though his voice has lost some touch he still cares.he is doing this album practically for nothing I mean he’s gonna be making nothing on it,yet he’s letting those who are starving and needy have money.I respect that in other’s.Bob I desire to meet you maybe to co-write or something you rock.Never forget that and always work and strive to improve I think you could do music forever because nothing is impossible and you are proof. If you try you can do anything. That’s what I believe in my heart that is good.

Rob Geurtsen | 9/7/2009, 12:02 pm EST

hey thanks Chilly Billy… for fortifying the argument.
I found it quite unbelievable – a Christmas album. What’s the artistic gain for Dylan?

My question is dumb in hindsight, easy talk, mr. anonymous.

Enjoy the music
cheers

”The man is Jewish, it makes no sense”

it makes all sense in the world:
jesus / yeshua is the messiah.

glory to the king!

Dylanology | 10/14/2009, 10:30 am EST

He’s christian, you morons. He turned to Christianity in the seventies. And then he turned to God knows what. But now he’s back to basics. Jesus is the King! Hallelujah!!!

red coral | 10/27/2009, 11:22 pm EST

Don’t care about the Jewish-Christian-C’mas album hoo-hah…Just that after more than 40 years (!) of following this man and his music, this recent recording is so, so painful.

There IS something to be said for an artist (like an athlete) knowing when to pull back…

And the descriptions of a musician of Dylan’s import as being reduced to a ‘national treasure’ (current iTunes site review) or worse, ‘another Tennesee Ernie Ford’ (current Amazon review), well, what can one say?

Sad, sad, sad!

Dylanese | 10/30/2009, 1:41 pm EST

I tried to listen some clips from Christmas in the heart and it’s the worst Dylan album in the world – NO it’s the worst album in the world. And that’s been said I think I still gonna buy it…

wallsome | 11/8/2009, 12:13 pm EST

I downloaded it today, and will go buy it in the morning! It’s cozy:D
