Nine Inch Nails Perform Full “Downward Spiral” as Wave Goodbye Tour Gets Underway

Nine Inch Nails began their Wave Goodbye tour with a pair of small venue concerts in New York City this weekend, performing Saturday at the Bowery Ballroom and last night at Webster Hall. Yesterday’s performance was especially noteworthy as Trent Reznor and Co. played their entire 1994 classic The Downward Spiral from start to finish, plus nearly a dozen more of NIN’s greatest hits. As Rock Daily previously reported, these 11 shows represent the last time Nine Inch Nails will perform live.

Rolling Stone was crammed up near the side of the stage Saturday night at the Bowery Ballroom near an army of crazed NIN fans. Highlights of the two-hour set included a cover of Joy Division’s “Dead Souls,” a crowd sing-along on “Hurt” and a super rare performance of NIN’s 1989 debut single “Down In It.” Before that track Trent addressed the crowd. “This is fucking tiring up here man,” he said. “Usually I have a stunt double fill in and robots. I’m too old for this shit. Seriously, these being the last shows with the band, it’s an honor to be here with you guys tonight. It’s funny being in New York. Back in the beginning of Nine Inch Nails we played some terrible shows in New York. I don’t know if anybody is old enough to have been at those shows. You know it sucked. We’ve done some sucking in our day. Glad to be here right now.”

Check out photos from the launch of NIN’s last official arena tour with Jane’s Addiction.

Prior to both concerts, diehard fans slept outside both venues in order to ensure prime spots for the shows, reports Brooklyn Vegan, who have video and photos from both performances. The Webster Hall show marked the first and last time NIN performed The Downward Spiral in its entirety. That gig also featured covers of Gary Numan’s “Metal,” Adam & the Ants’ “Physical (You’re So)” and a concert-ending performance of “Head Like A Hole.”

After a pair of shows at New York’s Terminal 5 scheduled for August 25th and 26th, Nine Inch Nails will head to Chicago for two shows at the Aragon Ballroom. After that, it’s off to Toronto for the Virgin Festival on August 30th and then four nights at four different venues in Los Angeles. Rock Daily will be there for Reznor’s final show, September 6th at Los Angeles’ Echoplex, so be sure to check back for our final ever live report from a NIN gig.

I saw NIN three times and each time was better than the last. Amazing live act.

It’s sad to see the touring days of NIN cominng to an end, but I respect Reznor for wanting to make time for LIFE to happen.

Good luck to him.

GG | 8/24/2009, 10:43 am EST

Farewell guys. We will miss all of the bleeps and bloops and scronch scronch scronch noises that you call music. Don’t forget to throw a keytar into the drum machine to show how “rock and roll” you are.

Red | 8/24/2009, 11:04 am EST

Gigi Allen was a douche. And Trent Reznor rocks.

F*ck | 8/24/2009, 11:46 am EST

I’d love to see one of those shows.

KM | 8/24/2009, 12:23 pm EST

I’m going to the next-to-last show. I can’t wait, if it’s going to be anything like this

g. | 8/24/2009, 1:10 pm EST

this was cool in 1994. now, who cares?

GG | 8/24/2009, 1:20 pm EST

NIN Final Show! Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep….blip..bli p…then the sound of metal grinding into metal…mutterings about doing naughty things with animals…more scraping sounds…thank you LA! Goodnight!

yeah GG A was douchey. My name is actually a takeoff on that awesmoe Mariah Carey movie. Or was it J Lo?…I can’t remember…

standard toil | 8/24/2009, 1:34 pm EST

wow!

Machine Head | 8/24/2009, 2:05 pm EST

“I don’t know if anybody is old enough to have been at those shows. You know it sucked. We’ve done some sucking in our day.”

Tell us about it. And it seems the sucking hasn’t really gone away either.

Flobert | 8/24/2009, 2:12 pm EST

I was at that show and I pissed my pants! Almost took a dump in my pants too! That’s how great it was!

NINfan7887 | 8/24/2009, 2:24 pm EST

I hope someday NIN will be back. It is sad to hear Trent say goodbye. His music inspired me throughout my life and I hope one day they will return to playing live shows again. I am seeing them at their last NYC show on Wed : )

Quit Bitching Pussy! | 8/24/2009, 3:18 pm EST

“This is fucking tiring up here man,” he said. “Usually I have a stunt double fill in and robots. I’m too old for this shit.

If you’re too old, then quit booking and doing shows. If you’re going to go out with a bang, shut up and play your music. Quit bitching about how exhausted you are.

MJ FRIMO | 8/24/2009, 3:43 pm EST

YEAH YOU STILL SUCK !! THIS IS THE LAST TIME, RIGHT JUST LIKE THE REST OF BANDS THAT TRY TO GENERATE SOME ATTENTION. TRENT REZNOR – SUPER GENIUS MORE LIKE SUPER FUCK KNUCKLE.

Fact | 8/24/2009, 4:47 pm EST

Desperate atempt to be hip with the new generation.

Remember how the 90s use to talk down to the 80s? Guess what?, this is 2009 and no one care about the 90s, and ironicly the 80s are back.

transoniqjohnny | 8/24/2009, 4:48 pm EST

SUCKERS! YOU IN THE TOILET SPIRAL! HAHAHA!

Muse is better | 8/24/2009, 5:01 pm EST

Screw NIN, these guys are the most overrated band in history. Every album they make is the same crap. Muse is 100 times better and they don’t get the recognition that NIN gets. They make better music and are way better live. Hell, they’ve even been voted best live act at several award shows and magazines. And they spend their time MAKING MUSIC instead of picking fights on Twitter.

sure | 8/24/2009, 5:27 pm EST

The chance of this being NIN “last US tour” is about as likely as Micheal Jackson coming back to life to play next years Bonnaroo. Trent Reznor is a lying, egotistical, greedy piece of shit.

JV | 8/24/2009, 5:43 pm EST

Amazing how much hate there is on here. If you have such disdain for Reznor then why read this article? I know it is difficult to understand uniqueness and creativity. Isn’t it time to slap in your Korn and Green Day cd’s in mommy’s car?

AudioCraft | 8/24/2009, 6:20 pm EST

I can’t think of a single band I don’t like and would bother to hit with negative comments like these haters. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. I guess the music of NIN is lost on such idiots. I was at last nights show and it was the best live show I’ve ever seen by any band and I’ve seen over a hundred bands at all kinds of venues. An epic goodbye.

Evan | 8/24/2009, 6:41 pm EST

Not sure why there is so much hate on this article.

Currently Trent Reznor is on Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest artists of all time, dubbed “The immortals” by RS. Thats what your beloved mag thinks of NIN.

And if NIN isnt for you, thats your personal opinion. but dont be an asshole and clog the page up with your hate.

Pamela | 8/24/2009, 7:07 pm EST

There’s a group of crazies out there who are angry at Trent since he got engaged and they are infiltrating threads like this in order to bring him down. The show at Webster was absolutely incredible. I’ve never been to a bad NIN show. I’m a classical musician and have tremendous respect for Trent as an artist and musician.

Isabel | 8/24/2009, 7:12 pm EST

Wow, I can’t believe the same shower-of-shit twitter witches (or twitches) are making the same anonymous comments on Nine Inch Nails even though the fact is the people making the comments are the ones who probably have a shrine to TR in their basement which was just fucked over by the fact the man got engaged. Erm, get a life. If you REALLY couldn’t give a toss about Nine Inch Nails you wouldn’t be on here in the first place

Huh. | 8/24/2009, 7:15 pm EST

ALL of The Downward Spiral?

Damn, I wish I was there.

Nasty | 8/24/2009, 7:16 pm EST

GOD DAMNIT!!!!!!! I’m so pissed I couldn’t be there.

youknowho | 8/24/2009, 7:31 pm EST

To the one who calls themself FACT:
The 90’s inspired music is here to stay. Just check out the sales of NIN, Pearl Jam, Radiohead etc…
The 90’s combined classic rock with the grunge movement. Listen to Soundgarden and tell me you don’t hear Zeppelin influence. Listen to NIN and tell me you can’t hear Gary Numan.
Music is good in every era. You just have to ignore the current trend followers. Who eventually come back to the music they cast out as a teenager!

LOLMuse. | 8/24/2009, 7:39 pm EST

“Muse is 100 times better and they don’t get the recognition that NIN gets.”

LOL. I must admit that Muse rips-off Radiohead and Queen way better than NIN, but Reznor is a rock legend and Bellamy is just a nerd.

BTW, people around here bitch about NIN because this is the fuc**ng RS, they have to praise The Jonas Brothers or something like that. ;)

anonymous | 8/24/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Would be cool probably. This is the ONLY NIN cd with listenable music in my opinion.

CHARLIE M | 8/24/2009, 7:47 pm EST

I SAW NIN VERY FIRST SHOW IN DETROIT TO SAY IT ROCKED IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT!THAT WAS 20 SOMETHING YEARS AGO IM 41 NOW AND PRETTY HATE MACHINE IS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALBUMS.I WAS THE ONLY BLACK GUY THERE BUT I KNEW EVERY WORD TO EVERY SONG ON THAT ALBUM I GOT SOME PRETTY HATEFUL LOOKS BUT HAD FUN.

zappa>god | 8/24/2009, 7:53 pm EST

GOD. I wish I could have been quicker. Tickets for the CA shows sold out in seconds. I’M BUMMEEDDD.

I’ve never seen them live, and I guess now I never will. :(

JasonN | 8/24/2009, 8:00 pm EST

Wow, the negative comments here come from a bunch idiots who will never know the meaning of art. Have some respect for the art that others appreciate and maybe they will have some for the art you respect.

WILSON G TANG | 8/24/2009, 8:40 pm EST

HOLY SHIT I SAW NIN IN CONCERT IN 94 IT WAS THE MOST BAD ASS SHOW OF MY LIFE I KNEW THE WORDS TO ALL OF THE SONGS AND I AM ASIAN.

jbizzler | 8/24/2009, 8:42 pm EST

Charlie, your the man for seeing NIN then and there. I’m 21, ive only seen them twice recently on lights in the sky and the ninja tour both in Missouri. Old Trent still defines a performer but i have alot of respect for people who saw the beginning of the end. Peace. Well all miss NIN onstage.

michelecm | 8/24/2009, 9:14 pm EST

Wow–love that setlist. Only had the opportunity to see NIN once
(Lights in the Sky tour); such an amazing show. This gig would’ve been very cool indeed.

Ari | 8/24/2009, 10:27 pm EST

And with the the curtain falls on a very dated genre of rock. Industrial music, R.I.P.

bennie new york | 8/24/2009, 11:27 pm EST

It’s dissapointing that so many people have only negative things to say about NIN. I know I will miss them though I’m sure at one point or another we will Trent and company touring once more.

bennie new york | 8/24/2009, 11:28 pm EST

It’s dissapointing that so many people have only negative things to say about NIN. I know I will miss them though I’m sure at one point or another we will see Trent and company touring once more.

Muse is better | 8/24/2009, 11:52 pm EST

“LOL. I must admit that Muse rips-off Radiohead and Queen way better than NIN, but Reznor is a rock legend and Bellamy is just a nerd.”

Let me guess, you’ve only heard one Muse song off of one of their first 2 albums and concluded that they’re Radiohead ripoffs? Cause only clueless idiots call Muse “Radiohead ripoffs” nowadays. And Reznor is only a legend of underground music of the 90s, he’s an irrelevant, tired old joke today. Bellamy can’t be the nerd, since he’s not the one going around on the internet insulting strangers who dare to hurt his feelings.

Muse Suck | 8/25/2009, 1:49 am EST

Muse Still Suck

VirgoLibra8 | 8/25/2009, 3:40 am EST

i’ve seen nin 5 times since ‘95 and reznor is always my fave concert of any live act on the planet. if you haven’t been to a nin show and are just reading headlines about him dissing other musicians then you will have a very innacurate perception of reznor. in person live, he is an amazing performer and person. nins music will last forever no matter what anyone says right now.

green monkey | 8/25/2009, 9:17 am EST

oh wow they performed downward spiral, there most commercial album. they’re done this tour cause no one buys there albums. in a couple years trent will need money so they’ll do another farewell tour like kiss does.you’re just part of the corporate machine trent, don’t act like you aren’t.

Well that sucks | 8/25/2009, 11:09 am EST

Trent decides to do something that fuckin cool and Im stuck in Vancouver, BC. Not only that he wraps NIN, my favorite band and we dont get a date. Fuck you Trent and the 5 showa and countless dollars Ive lined your pocket with.

Anonymous | 8/25/2009, 12:37 pm EST

“Let me guess, you’ve only heard one Muse song off of one of their first 2 albums and concluded that they’re Radiohead ripoffs?”

No, I have all their albums and they have never made anything original, they started ripping off Radiohead and Nirvana and they are going to rip off Queen and Lady Gaga in their next album.

Muse have NEVER done anything relevant for rock music. NIN will always be remembered as rock legends, like it or not.

NIN>>>>>>>>>>>>>+Infinte >>>>>>Muse.

Drewdog21 | 8/25/2009, 1:07 pm EST

Ah, kids today wouldn’t know good music if it came up and bit them on the Mickey Mouse asses.
Why don’t you all go back to your Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers/the last reject from American Idol records and leave the real music to the big people, O.K.?
There you go now. Here’s some Skittles for you to enjoy. Go sit at the kiddy table now, like good little boys and girls.
Take care now, bye-bye then!

Green Monkey Grammar Lesson | 8/25/2009, 1:28 pm EST

“Their” is possessive. I think you meant to write, “THEIR most commercial album” (which it’s not) and “no one buys THEIR albums” (people still buy records?).
Attacks on bands you don’t like are much stronger when you don’t come across as retarded.

Alex | 8/25/2009, 1:45 pm EST

Whoever said TDS was their most commercial record is an idiot, it’s their harshest record this side of Broken. The only reason it sold so many was the musical era it was released in lapped up that kind of music, especially so soon after Kurt Cobain’s death. This is the reason why the TDS songs get played so little, outside of Piggy, Closer, March Of The Pigs and Hurt.

With Teeth is the most commercial NIN record. Regardless I don’t know why I’m commenting on a Rolling stone thread full of retards and Muse fans that don’t seem to realise that the Muse boys themselves are massive NIN fans.

Nine Inch Nails is Better | 8/25/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Why is everybody talking about muse when this story is about NIN. I like both bands, but NIN is still better.Black Holes And Revelations and Year Zero were both amazing albums, but the Fragile is an amazing record. Wish NIN would come to Montana again……

Tiago | 8/25/2009, 2:53 pm EST

NIN Rules. the record rules! the concert must have ruled!
there are people who does not get nin’s music. live with it. most of the people who enjoys good rock n roll music, digg it. thats it.

Drewdog21 | 8/25/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Hey, Green Monkey!
So I missed one “THEIR”. So, shut up! Aren’t you supposed to be sitting back at the kiddies table? Kids should be seen and not heard.
Now eat the rest of your vegetables!

Lauren Z | 8/25/2009, 4:49 pm EST

I was not happy to z peace during each selector of songs… the mosh pit was overcrowded but thanks to Visby I was successfully able to find my boyfriend Adrian… Thanks NiN

what? | 8/25/2009, 7:12 pm EST

whoever said Trent reznor is a joke today is THE joke. Trent isn’t irrelevant and no, 1994 isn’t the end of NIN’s “populariy”. grow up kids.

and yes, MUSE effing rips-off RADIOHEAD…hard.

what? | 8/25/2009, 7:16 pm EST

“Trent Reznor is a lying, egotistical, greedy piece of shit”

do you know Trent personally to say shit like that? you must be referring to yourself.

Carlos Rosette Vazquez | 8/25/2009, 7:27 pm EST

Im from Tijuana Mexico my name is Carlos Rosette, in 33 years old; NIN is the band who made Industrial Music Known commercial wise, NIN are Rock Legends, So Kids of today do not Know a Lick. Music of Today are So lame Hip- Dog, and Wannabe rock kids and corporate music sucks!@, All this music was created in England the fathers are The Beatles and chuck berry and so on!!! The Underground thing like Kraftwerk, KMFDM and Front 242, Nitzer Ebb are the music… NIN made Marlin Manson so the manson clan need to chill out…. And Trent made Industrial Rock Famous, So NIN will be miss.. they Rock … One of a life time Hard electronic Rock Band of all Time … i hope he will play a farewell gig in San Diego or Tijuana Mexico…

Cheesecrop | 8/25/2009, 8:26 pm EST

Saw NIN back in 95, and they were great. I haven’t a clue what they are like today.

I guess I am a little sad to see them leave. I haven’t been a big fan of the recent work, but I’ve never actually stopped listening to them. You could always rely on NIN to come up w/something interesting, even if you may not have cared for it personally. He always did manage to keep people coming back to check out what he had going. Regardless of whether I cared for his stuff or not, that is a quality in short supply these days.

zappa>god | 8/25/2009, 10:48 pm EST

I hope they do Pretty Hate Machine at the last show at the Echoplex.

I think it would bring everything full circle.

ghosthorse4949 | 8/25/2009, 11:36 pm EST

While I love NIN, I was dissapointed there werent any track’s from The Fragile, My favorite album of all time.

Muse is better | 8/26/2009, 12:55 am EST

Yes, cause Hysteria, Butterflies & Hurricanes, Knights of Cydonia and Starlight all sound like stuff Radiohead would do, right? Get real, it’s obvious you don’t know squat about Muse. You’re just repeating the same crap Muse haters have always been saying. NIN is a one-dimensional band, they’re in their second decade of their career and the evolution in their music isn’t really all that great. Same old goth-industrial crap. And the fact that Trent takes himself too seriously makes it even less impressive.

VirgoLibra8 | 8/26/2009, 1:11 am EST

reznor changes his sound every album, his live show changed every tour from 89-09 too. he praised kid a by radiohead in 2000 and grew up listening to kiss so maybe most of these “beefs” are constructive criticism.

ummm | 8/26/2009, 2:39 pm EST

article mentions theyplayed down in it but its not on the tracklist?

ummm | 8/26/2009, 2:41 pm EST

Isabel | 8/26/2009, 2:50 pm EST

To ‘Muse is Better’ – do you realise that Muse are NIN fanboys? Or do you just think Muse’s taste in music is shit, curious to know

samwise | 8/26/2009, 3:05 pm EST

niggling feeling? look! it’s oakey

Jay-bomb | 8/26/2009, 3:18 pm EST

play my muthafreakin song bitch!

Helmet Helper | 8/26/2009, 5:04 pm EST

when i last saw NIN it was in san francisco in 2001. They blew me away with how shit their live act was.
The noise was deafening and all that screaming/vocal crap was just garbage.
They’d definitely changed a lot since their early folk/country style and i’m not sure which I liked better. The stage presence was certainly better but in many ways i felt they were simply trying to put on a big show to hide the tears within.
Jerry’s mother had just passed away and I think he was feeling the pinch of both regret and remorse, but also the latent horniness that dwelled in his loins.
After their comeback tour in 2004 I’m pretty sure Reznor had had a circumcision by the way he stood and also by seeing him take a piss in the toilet. The scars were not quite healed, and he shook with pain when micturating, like he had a uirnay tract infection.
all in all, NIN are back, better than before, which isn’t saying much. And for the record, muse are much much much better.

VirgoLibra8 | 8/26/2009, 10:15 pm EST

reznor has reached the top multiple times and innovated at the same time. so how many of the nin haters on here saw the ‘94 self-destruct tour? ‘00 fragility 2.0 tour? or the ‘08 lights in the sky tour? those 3 tours alone make the competition look like a joke and were voted as best tours in readers polls and critics polls.

Kgrouch | 8/26/2009, 10:37 pm EST

I love all the haters on hear just rambling about nonsense. Who the hell is Muse??? Exactly!!! Without NIN, there would be no F-in Muse!!!

Face the facts people: NIN is going to be remembered forever. The shit you’re listening to these days will not!!!

Munted Gladrag | 8/27/2009, 2:11 pm EST

then print it shitballs

Munted Gladrag | 8/27/2009, 2:12 pm EST

oh kgrouch – you so funny! who are muse indeed! only the best damn band to come out of teignmouth!

There WOULD be muse without NIN – i don’t recall NIN either birthing the muse members or creating them in way shape or form.

Munted Gladrag | 8/27/2009, 2:16 pm EST

muse will far outlast NIN in the history books of music genius…basically because they are actual musical geniuses, as opposed to monsters of futile bam busting shit-twirling dundopes of nincinance

Troubador | 8/27/2009, 2:18 pm EST

what a gig! 24 tracks of ice cold bebop whirlywinds. wish i’d been there to shake my leg with venom and prance like the other idiots.

Carson | 8/27/2009, 4:59 pm EST

I’m sorry, but “Ternt” brought all of this negativity on himself……he should just “wave the hell goodbye” and be done…..he could’ve gone out on top–A FREAKIN LEGEND–, yet his recent antics have made him a joke. I have never seen a 20 year reputation go down this fast–in a matter of less than four months. He’s like a meth lab….nobody wants him around and they are all ready for him to LEAVE.

Carson | 8/27/2009, 5:03 pm EST

By the way……who are you sheep who actually believe that someone cares about Reznor being “engaged”…people are annoyed by his asshole antics, not that he found some man to put up with him.
Get a grip.

mr stevo | 8/27/2009, 5:18 pm EST

I love my NIN and I hate to see him go. I’ve been listening since I was 15 in 1990. I’m also a big fan of most muse albums. Don’t love Black Holes, but Symmetry and Absolution are both brilliant albums.
However I don’t understand why someone would even bother to talk about how Muse is better than NIN. These are two bands that have absolutely nothing in common. Why not compare Motley Crue to Dimmu Borgir? They are about as close as Muse is to NIN.
And yes Muse is often very Radioheadish. Such is their downfall for getting recognition second. They are much more synth heavy though. I really don’t see it as a negative. They are two bands from the same era, same country, in the same genre and with the same influences. Of course there are going to be similarities. You would have to be an idiot to deny it or to fault them for it. Both bands are clearly doing their own thing despite any similarities.

Greg | 8/28/2009, 4:42 pm EST

this picture is amazing

NIN FAN | 8/28/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Good look with the drag queen Trent!

Courtney Love | 8/29/2009, 11:22 am EST

What do they say on Family Matters?? GO HOME STEVE……
GO HOME TRENT.

AndreaUrbanFox | 8/30/2009, 7:04 pm EST

I apologize to Trent Reznor here and now for offending you. I’m having a baby soon and I so wish that you were the father!

Satan | 9/2/2009, 3:53 pm EST

I approve of this NIN band. Making the devil proud!

VirgoLibra8 | 9/2/2009, 7:44 pm EST

nin will last forever. it’s ok for you guys to hate on reznor seeing as he might have dissed a band you listen to so i can relate but realistically the band nine inch nails is one of the best live acts on the planet and musically he always pushes the boundaries so find someone who sucks to hate on because you misguided morons are in the wrong place.

Steve Cravis | 9/4/2009, 10:38 am EST

And no. I can’t listen to NIN anymore. But mind you, i haven’t been able to since With teeth. It seems he has “sold out” in this respect, probably for sex.

Dan Windle | 9/5/2009, 1:21 am EST

NIN is over-rated period. I am not anti-NIN but I never heard anything that approached musical genius or even better than “so so” stuff. If it were not for the technology ( meaning you grab loops or use synths to do it all and no real “hands-on” musicianship or feeling or natural talent ) available he would be an average singer/songwriter in an average band in your average club.

David Levi | 9/6/2009, 12:02 pm EST

And the reason we care is?

Carolyn | 9/7/2009, 4:26 pm EST

I find this whole Muse vs. NIN thing really amusing. I’ll take the genius (Yeah, I said it) of Reznor’s innovation over second-rate Radiohead wankery any day.

Not Impressed | 9/11/2009, 9:02 pm EST

Wow. Yet another chance for fan/article discussion ruined by anonymous assholes. Gee, since you pathetic cowards love talking shit to fans so much, why don’t you COME SAY THAT SHIT AT A NIN SHOW? Because we would wipe the floor with you. Your stain wouldn’t even be missed.
Aw, did you just wet your wittle panties? hehe, stop wasting our oxygen.

bob | 9/25/2009, 6:26 am EST

Does Trent know of any other words except female sex organs to call people? He is gross! He has a misogynistic outlook on life. His days of being relevant are long over. But keep it quiet because he’s gonna find you and punch you in your fat tits!
