Cameron Crowe’s Video for Pearl Jam’s “The Fixer” Premieres

8/24/09, 12:21 pm EST

In May, Pearl Jam played a secret show at Seattle’s Showbox in anticipation of their new album Backspacer. Now, the result of that surreptitious concert has been revealed in the Cameron Crowe-directed video for the new LP’s first single “The Fixer.” Making use of large video screens simultaneously projecting the band performing and the audience, “The Fixer” is reminiscent of other old-school in-concert Pearl Jam videos like “Alive” and “Evenflow,” with Crowe’s free-wheeling cameras adding a sense of being in the thick of the performance. “The Fixer” video will also reportedly appear in Target commercials promoting Backspacer.

As we inch toward the September 20th release date for Pearl Jam’s ninth album, another track off the LP, “Supersonic,” leaked out this weekend as fans began receiving the 7” inch single for “The Fixer,” which boasted “Supersonic” as its B side. As Rock Daily previously reported, “Just Breathe” was featured in a making-of Backspacer video that premiered last week, and “Got Some” was performed by the band on the debut episode of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Pearl Jam’s concert in London recently also featured Backspacer’s closing track, “The End,” and a demo of “Speed of Sound” was given to fans who participated in that online art scavenger hunt.

Wondering what the rest of the album sounds like? Thanks to Amazon.co.uk, now we know: 30 second clips of the entire Backspacer are currently streaming, so fans can get a sneak peek at songs like “Johnny Guitar,” “Force of Nature,” the non-demo version of “Speed of Sound” and the rest of the album. Pearl Jam’s U.S. tour kicked off last night at Chicago’s United Center, with another Windy City concert scheduled for tonight, August 24th.

Best song to come out in years

Johnny Guitar | 8/24/2009, 1:43 pm EST

Those clips on Amazon UK basically tell me this album is going to be epic!

I like cake | 8/24/2009, 1:58 pm EST

The show last night was so hot! Much more like the old days. Come on Sept 20 get here so I can buy this album.

JasonTH | 8/24/2009, 2:07 pm EST

Based on the sound clips, I think I’m most excited for “Amongst the Waves”, “Gonna See My Friend” and “Force of Nature”.

Lipo | 8/24/2009, 3:13 pm EST

agreed, show last night was sweet! they put together a great set. i wish the encores had been a little different but overall a good show. looking forward to getting my hands on ‘Backspacer’.

realist....... | 8/24/2009, 3:36 pm EST

This album is gonna be too pop friendly to be the real pearl jam. It will be a lot worse than their last for sure!

guitar_davey | 8/24/2009, 3:36 pm EST

what’s with the shit quality?

Off a bit | 8/24/2009, 4:06 pm EST

Not sure what it was, but Ed’s voice seemed off in Chicago last night. His rasp is becoming piercing. And this new video makes me queasy. I like it better when they wouldn’t do videos.

Sony Music | 8/24/2009, 4:08 pm EST

Dear Pearl Jam,

Where the hell was this album when you were signed to us? We thought we were very nice to you, and helped make you very rich men.

Now, as soon as you are free of us, you make a really accessible album full of solid rockers, hit single pop songs and strong ballads. Oh yeah, I almost forgot; the new video of yours that looks like the old Evenflo and Alive videos. Come on!!!!

We hope you record tanks…

You guys are Dicks,

Love,

Sony Music

PS: Don’t forget This Is It, a film of Michael Jackson preparing for his 50-concert run at London’s O2 Arena, will be released in movie theaters on October 30th.

pj lover | 8/24/2009, 4:23 pm EST

this album is going to be amazing. The boys just keep getting better.

Swingline | 8/24/2009, 4:30 pm EST

yeah, Sony Music’s got to be doing really well for themselves, considering they’re whoring out rough clips of a dead guy practicing a performance like it’s their best new artist.

And during Pearl Jam’s tenure there, how many fads were pushed on as the next big rock thing (O.C. Ska, Rap Rock, Nu Metal) and how many of those gimmick acts are still around?

love it | 8/24/2009, 4:35 pm EST

Oh I love this…. oh my goodness. played several times in a row, this stuff gets inside you. oh man i didn’t get tickets. it doesn’t seem as if there’s a bad song on the record.

Wes | 8/24/2009, 4:53 pm EST

The band is amazing and hasn’t put out a bad album yet…but this one seems to be their strongest effort this decade…can’t wait to see this video on VH1 jump start in the mornings!

Joe | 8/24/2009, 5:14 pm EST

This is the coolest thing I have seen in a long time!

Mediocre Record | 8/24/2009, 5:14 pm EST

I’ve been a huge fan for years.

There are only three good songs on this album:

Got Some, The Fixer, and…and…

turdfergular | 8/24/2009, 5:20 pm EST

I was excited about this album until I heard some of the music from it… Now I am no longer interested. I thought they were really making something memorable, but instead it just sounds like what they would have sounded like if they missed out on the whole “grunge” era. Who wants to hear Eddie channel his inner pop-star? Not this guy! I can’t wait for the new Alice in Chains record!!!

jeff | 8/24/2009, 5:22 pm EST

I agree! New AIC will be EPIC!!

10Clubber | 8/24/2009, 6:17 pm EST

Dear Sony music

You did not make Pearl Jam rich men their music did that. There music also made you a lot of money (and with a complete catalogue re-issue in the pipeline not to mention a possible Pearl Jam Rock Band game their music is still making you money). Also Pearl Jam never made a bad record while they were on your label so what are you complaining about?

You guys are Dicks. I hope PJ record fantastic albums that get the recognition they deserve.

Love,

A Pearl Jam fan

P.S. Stop whoring out Jackson’s death

StoneAment | 8/24/2009, 6:46 pm EST

Not a fan of the Fixer but I do like the other stuff I’ve heard from this record. Particularly looking forward to Just Breathe.

Katie | 8/24/2009, 6:51 pm EST

I have been a fan of pearl jam almost half my life, but I am not digging this song. Eddie’s not the same, I can’t take any more of his political bullshit. I’m selling my LA tickets.

cd | 8/24/2009, 7:02 pm EST

‘the fixer’ is simply one of the best pearl jam songs i’ve ever heard.

Cheesecrop | 8/24/2009, 8:01 pm EST

From what I’ve heard of the album so far, it’s pretty solid. I’ve got all their other studio work, and I know that I’ll most likely pick this one up as well, in due time.

Matt Camerons Mushroom | 8/24/2009, 8:15 pm EST

To all you dickheads hating on Pearl Jam for making there music available to the masses again……grow the fuck up. And to those wishing they would make another 10……grow the fuck up. Have you been listening to rock radio since 1998? Its been shit bands trying to sound like Mr. Vedder circa 91-94. I’m a fan of all of PJ’s music. Some albums are better than others………..but from what ive heard from backspacer is better than anything they have done in a few albums time. Strongest record since Yield in my honest opinion.

Ari | 8/24/2009, 10:11 pm EST

Was disappointed with “Got Some”. But this song is the best rock song to come out in the last 4 years after The Killer’s “Somebody Told Me”. Easily my new fave PJ song right now. I’ll be blasting this in the gym!

Joel | 8/25/2009, 12:42 am EST

I think it will be a good album but not great. It just sounds too middle of the road for me, after YIELD they kinda lost my attention. I am also looking forward to the new AIC, everything I heard from it is badass.

frakenfarter | 8/25/2009, 12:45 am EST

I thought PJ had always made music for the masses, I don’t think they have an indy bone in their bodies. Sure they have shunned labels and talked up the DIY ethics but every time they release an album it is always a major label deal with distribution.

matt | 8/25/2009, 1:25 am EST

is it me or for some reason that video made me dizzy. this album is only 36 mins. ?

Roar (norway) | 8/25/2009, 2:46 am EST

PJ have changed, so have we. They still make not so good, good and great songs. Pj have been going on for quite some time now. Only bad bands try to make a new Ten. Why? It’s impossible. I saw PJ LIVE in Berlin august 15. It was awesome. They kick like hell! The new songs, the fixer and got some, worked GREAT (live)! I think the new record will be great. For those who are going to sell their tickets or don’t like this record, I couldn’t care less. For all the others; ENJOY!

Hail Hail... | 8/25/2009, 3:12 am EST

The Fixer and Got Some are the best songs on this album.

If you were making an all-star album of greatest songs from each and every Pearl Jam album, those two songs would be the obvious representatives from Backspacer.

There is really no debate to be had.

And the sound on that video at the top is shit.

green monkey | 8/25/2009, 8:43 am EST

man they should just pack it in, they aren’t relevant anymore it’s sad. stone gossard wrote there hit album, all of a sudden eddie vedder has songwriting credits on there follow up, vs. too many egos, they should just let stone gossard write there next album and quit trying to be what they aren’t accomplished songwriters.

RJ | 8/25/2009, 9:33 am EST

I can’t get the amazon link to work. it will only let me listen to 30 seconds of supersonic. anybody else having this problem?

Fool Moon | 8/25/2009, 10:06 am EST

This is going to be the greatest album of all time. This band does whatever the hell they want and I love it!

to green monkey | 8/25/2009, 10:07 am EST

Based on your dribble, I don’t think you are one that could recognize anything of quality. By the way, it’s “their album.” Moron.

Johnny Guitar | 8/25/2009, 10:08 am EST

Absolutely amazing! This band continues to impress!

Wes C. Addle | 8/25/2009, 10:11 am EST

This album is going to be huge. I have heard the whole thing and there is not a Weak spot on it.

stoney | 8/25/2009, 10:14 am EST

Anybody who does not like or enjoy these songs needs to move out of their mom’s basement, get a job and join the rest of civilized humanity in the real world. Need help doing that? PJ has got some if you need it….

amongst the waves | 8/25/2009, 10:16 am EST

Truly the greatest band ever

ana | 8/25/2009, 11:24 am EST

I love katie’s response. sell your tickets to me.

MB | 8/25/2009, 11:51 am EST

Im only getting Supersonic from the Amazon site….Anyone else having issues with this?
ps Pearl Jam= Greatness

Jerome Turner | 8/25/2009, 12:02 pm EST

The rest of the songs were taken down off Amazon. Likely at the band’s request… looks like Amazon jumped the gun on putting them up.

Johnny Guitar | 8/25/2009, 12:08 pm EST

Pearl Jam’s management pulled the plug on that. Then it started popping up like mushrooms in Youtube. Then they put the kabosh on those. I guess it was like the Northern Lights. If you were there when it was there….

Snaves | 8/25/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Vocal melody is tight. Cool guitar part too, considerably more pop elements in their sound in this one…I like it though.

Coup | 8/25/2009, 1:47 pm EST

Part of being a great band is evolving, changing your sound, not being afraid to try something new. This is why Pearl Jam has endured the better part of 2 decades and will continue to endure. There is a brilliance in everyone of their albums. Cant wait for Backspacer.

Am I the only one with eyes? | 8/25/2009, 7:59 pm EST

The song is great, but am I the only person with 20/20 vision?

There is green-screen spill in almost every scene; the band members are perma-haloed by the lack of precision video work; and, various body parts are close to being amputated by sloppy matte cutting.

I’m hoping Cameron Crowe’s 8-yr old niece did this in iMovie one afternoon when Uncle Cam left his dailies lying around?

More likely, they sense potential looming backlash from their ’selling-out’ to Target, and this helps paint them as still the rebel, sticking it to the man?

J | 8/25/2009, 8:53 pm EST

I’ve been following PJ from the get-go, but this sounds like Kings of Leon…nothing since Binaural

listen | 8/26/2009, 4:00 am EST

one of the greatest live acts of all time…… only the fortunate that are there to witness it can understand

Karma | 8/26/2009, 8:08 am EST

Best…band….ever

Boyda | 8/26/2009, 9:02 pm EST

I don’t own any Pearl Jam disks. I see them every chance I get. Why is this… urgency. This band is the realization of “urgency” live.

Wow.

Mike | 8/26/2009, 10:26 pm EST

I love how you lap dogs think that this song rocks. The truth that each of you know deep down in your deprived musical souls, is that PJ has been re-recording the same song in each album since “No Code” made the world yawn.

No more true words has been spoken since a reviewer lamented that Eddie never should’ve been given the gig for “Dead Man Walking.” While most who pursue side projects leave that style to that project, Eddie must’ve insisted that PJ was also going to be as mellow as a San Diego summer day.

As a result, and for well over a decade now, PJ has become an adult rock band –a slightly edgier version of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. The memories of when PJ used to really hum and were THE BAND of the 90’s are fading into the ether.

Pj lover | 8/27/2009, 6:16 am EST

shut up mike…

RJ | 8/27/2009, 9:26 am EST

Mike – you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but the question is why do you feel you have to troll for PJ stories and then leave your opinion? You really have a boring life? There are plenty of bands I don’t like, but I don’t bother going to articles about them to shit on their fans. I really don’t uderstand commenters like you.

Brian | 8/27/2009, 1:25 pm EST

Pearl Jam sounds great!
A very fun song.
The band sounds happy, can’t wait to see them live again tomorrow in San Francisco.
First time since 1995 spartan stadium show.

Best…Band…Ever (IMHO) ; )

ugly fish | 8/27/2009, 2:45 pm EST

crap days? the better live album from last year?

mendino | 8/27/2009, 4:10 pm EST

childish video, like when 2 boys laugh at their dangling nads.
still, thought his voice was sharper than ver before, thanks in part at least to a milky drink called Guandine. Federer takes it before every tennis match

wonderboy | 8/27/2009, 4:11 pm EST

complimentary take on their latest song.
if PJ want to stop singing about jazzfunk and stupid little boob jobs then let them. i was fed up with it anyway.
sad to see them back together, but there ya go.

jamfan | 8/30/2009, 7:59 am EST

PaulJohn | 9/7/2009, 1:05 am EST

I love the song, and respect that the band needs to try new things. But they are not the band they used to be. And they have sold out by with Target

jim jarmusch | 9/7/2009, 8:28 pm EST

jim jarmusch | 9/7/2009, 8:30 pm EST

my grammar blows….excuse me (im learning english right now)

Bob | 9/27/2009, 12:40 pm EST

If your a true PJ fan you cant judge studio work until they play it live. The best live band out there.Ive seen Springsteen and The Who at least 15 times each. The End is the best song ever written by eddy.Cant wait for Philly.

bishnu | 10/27/2009, 1:23 am EST

I like the guitar part of the song .
