Bon Jovi Return to Rock With “The Circle” On November 10th

8/19/09, 12:11 pm EST

Bon Jovi told Rolling Stone that they’ll be going “back to rock & roll” on their next album, and today we learned when their return to their roots will go down: Bon Jovi announced today that their next album The Circle will be released on November 10th. First single “We Weren’t Born To Follow” debuted on radio yesterday, featuring an anthemic chorus of “We weren’t born to follow, come on and get up off your knees, when life is a bitter pill to swallow, you got to hold on to what you believe.” Have a listen at the Island Def Jam site.

The Circle follows the band’s platinum-selling, country-tinged LP Lost Highway. “I think what happened is the fact that we made the kind of Nashville-influenced record, and it created this vacuum now for a big rock record from us. There’s a continued evolution,” guitarist Richie Sambora told Rolling Stone. “[The Circle] doesn’t sound like any other previous record. Everybody that we’ve been playing it for has been real turned on by it, and we’re certainly happy with how it turned out.”

The Circle find Bon Jovi reteaming with producer John Shanks, who also worked with the band on 2005’s Have A Nice Day and 2007’s Lost Highway. Sambora also told RS that Bon Jovi would set out on tour to promote the album sometime in the Spring of 2010, promising that the ensuing trek is “going to be a big one.”

Can’t wait:)
It’s a great song!!

Yeah | 8/19/2009, 1:23 pm EST

I’m a fan of BJs too (haha get it?), and this song is atrocious. No different than “It’s My Life”, which means that people who like real music will ignore it and Bon Jovi fans will eat it up.

Metalman | 8/19/2009, 4:09 pm EST

Sambora is easily one of the top five guitarists in the world. He’s a marvel to watch live.

jerry braden | 8/19/2009, 5:18 pm EST

I’m going to love the album;they will always be the best;I love weren’t born to foillow and working man:I will be sure to buy the album as soon as it hit shelves:bon jovi forever;

Jon Bonjovi is a wonderful singer and aritst whose new song and alboum is stemming from Rose Revolution of Comopassion and freedom and Diverse Unity for the world as her Global Peace & Reform program! Artists now are becoming change makers according to her new psychology of Health and Excellence & change makers

Bon Jovi > Shakespeare | 8/19/2009, 6:11 pm EST

‘It’s my life… And it’s now or never… I ain’t gonna live forever…I just wanna live while I’m alive… It’s my life!’

‘Im a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride… Im wanted dead or alive’

‘Your love is like bad medicine..
Bad medicine is what I need
Shake it up, just like bad medicine!’

That’s some deep heavy shit they got there! Groundbreaking stuff!

BJFAN | 8/19/2009, 6:50 pm EST

Wow… I’m surprised you can read and type! Maybe these lyrics will show you how to relax, have fun, and stand up and live your life!!
You better get back to deciphering Shakespeare.

BJFAN | 8/19/2009, 6:51 pm EST

Yeah – I think Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers is more your type LOL!!!!

jbjalways | 8/19/2009, 7:08 pm EST

Typical Bon Jovi no surprise. Not sure what Richie I talking about when he ays its like nothing they’ve done before. So far both songs sounds like they ripped themselves off. Not bad, but was hoping for harder rock.

Donald Strong | 8/19/2009, 7:18 pm EST

The single is dreadful.Middle aged men singing lyrics of rebellion that are supposed to inspire who?
Its My Life had at least infectious music,as did Everyday, though the 2 were derivative.Have a Nice Day again, at least had something to offer other than some banal and infantile lyrics. At least it is not the country pablum they pushed on there last recording. Credit where credit is due, somehow these guys have found longevity where most if not all of there brethren have found bankruptcy lawyers.
Alas, like KISS’s new soon to be released Sonic Boom, I will not purchase this either, even though I was a huge fan of both a decade plus ago. I will however purchase Creed’s Full Circle the day it is released.

redkem1 | 8/19/2009, 7:36 pm EST

I am huge Bon Jovi fan, been a fan since i was 6 im now 25. OMG some of these comments are ridiculous. Bon Jovi are amazing. They are always proving critics wrong, there music is inspiring, the lyrical content is real! just you haters cant accept the fact they are one of the greatest bands of all time. Some people say compare against guns n roses, ok who have done wot now? chinese democracy is a like a transexual trying to sing like girls aloud stuff. Axl rose cant sing. Metallica however although repetitive in style, James hetfield has a amazing voice, Sebastian Bach WOH THIS GUY ROCKS!

Jon Bon Jovi has a amazing voice at his age, Bon Jovi rock to most and some people dont like them, if you dont like them shut up about it, why are you evening reading a article about bon jovi if you dont even like them.

BON JOVI IMO ROCKS. BEST BAND IN THE WORLD

Gwerb | 8/19/2009, 10:45 pm EST

Bon Jovi Fan | 8/20/2009, 2:27 am EST

Love the comment about “middle age men”. Who cares how old or young one is? – Great music blends the generations and never dies. That is why Bon Jovi music will continue to be embraced across generations and why the life of this band is far from over. These are career musicians – and like a fine wine, they only become better with time. The lyrical content of Bon Jovi songs talk of happiness, love, commitment among friends, struggle, grit, and rising above adversity….timeless concepts of the human condition. At their concerts you look up at the stage and see fresh youthful attitude. This blend of musical maturity and youthful freshness make you walk away from the concert saying “Got to get to the store and buy a few CDs!” – then you just watch the news for the next time they are coming to your town. That is why this diverse great “band of brothers” (kindred spirits) has been selling out concerts for years…and they will continue to do so.

Annalise | 8/20/2009, 2:33 am EST

Tell them to come to australia from a fan in their teens ;)

Gotta sahy that this song is awsome! those ‘bon jovi’ fans who are still living the 80’s have got to get a grip, if you really know your Bon Jovi stuff then you’ll agree that this is a rocking song..such a gret chorus and even beofre i read this article i said that it was an anthemic chorus!! its soo good, so to those who are disappointed it wasn’t harder or heavier, give them a break and enjoy the song for what it is, a true bon jovi peice of magic..close your eyes and see yourself at a stadium concert with this song being performed!! awsome!!!

Go back and look at articles in Rolling Stone and see how many “Comments” attached to each article. Articles about Bon Jovi always draw a multitude of comments because the Bon Jovi lovers come out in droves and we all know what motivates the Bon Jovi “haters” – pure jealousy for these men who have talent, good looks, charisma and character – quality traits regardless of culture. The “haters’” comments are only more testimony to the success of this band. Quality music evokes emotion, and jealousy is only topped by love as the most powerful of emotions. This band moves everyone. The men in this band can be assured that they have the largest, most loyal fan base in rock and roll today. – Keep writing Bon Jovi “haters”. We all get a huge charge out of your mindless comments. I remain a steadfast fan.

Bon Jovi Fan:

You are a fan after my own heart!

It’s amazing how what well-thought-out, intelligent posts that have been made here seem to be made by supporters of the band, and the innane, banal ones with no substance are made by the haters. Ought to tell everyone a thing or two…

Spirit | 8/21/2009, 2:43 am EST

Wow, I’m so impressed… you know how to cut and paste. At least you learned a thing or two in kindergarten.

To Donald Strong and Gwerb: Give it a chance. It’s only one song. If you didn’t like this one maybe you’ll like the others.

Paul: I hear you, but it’s pretty hard to improve on TD.

Gwerb | 8/21/2009, 9:00 am EST

Sure…I gave “In and out of love” a chance when I saw the video for the first time. Then two seconds later, they showed “Lay it down” by Ratt. That was kinda like watching Godzilla stomp a Pepsi can.

Great single and for bon jovi haters

Spirit | 8/21/2009, 2:09 pm EST

Gwerb:

So, Bon Jovi was Godzilla, right? All you have to do is look to where each are today and you have your answer. While Bon Jovi is one of the few who successfully made it through the alternative/grunge/rap era, RATT was a casualty. Now, RATT is reduced to sharing the stage with other bands and playing fairs and small venues WITH these other bands. Bon Jovi is still, and never stopped, selling out large arenas and stadiums all over the world whenever they decided to tour. I’m not dissing RATT, just stating the obvious. You brought it up.

By the way, In and Out of Love isn’t exactly their best work, I agree.

Cj | 8/21/2009, 7:18 pm EST

That’s a “comfort” that a Bon Jovi fan isn’t dissing Ratt.As someone posted awhile back, Bon Jovi used to open for Ratt. Ratt killed them every night.Don’t get me wrong, I always thought Pearcy was a punk, but musically-stage performance-song writing- Ratt was wayyyy better. It wasn’t even close.

Anonymous | 8/22/2009, 4:57 am EST

I have ALWAYS loved Bon Jovi, and am hoping THE CIRCLE is gonna be a heavier return to form. Having seen them latest at Manchester (the set they provided that night was almost beyond comparison), I had a lot of hope for the new album. We Weren’t Born To Follow may not be music to some peoples ears, but it’s a step back in the right direction. I’m not a lover of the new single, but I have a sneaky feeling its just a taster of whats to come on the album, and it can’t be a bad thing!!!

Bruno | 8/22/2009, 12:50 pm EST

COME TO BRAZILLLL!!! PLEASEEEEE

Spirit | 8/23/2009, 2:27 am EST

CJ:

First, every Bon Jovi fan knows they opened for RATT. They had to get their start somewhere.

Second, I don’t make it a habit to diss anyone – it’s rude and disrespectful. But I’m going to defend where it’s warranted as well, and people will get what they give from me. And I certainly didn’t post anything to be a “comfort” to anybody.

It may be that RATT killed Bon Jovi on stage. I wasn’t there, and I have no idea. What I do know is that it was Jovi’s first time on the big stage. I’m sure they had a lot to learn. And learn they did. What was true 25 years ago is not what is true NOW. If you or any of the other haters would actually bother to see what you’re trashing now, you would probably be surprised. That is, if you actually came to it with an open mind. I’d think you’d find that it STILL isn’t even close, except the other way around. Not that you’d ever admit that you might be wrong.

Cj:

Excellent. You know how to list a few album titles. Amazingly, so do I… Slippery When Wet, New Jersey, Keep the Faith, Lost Highway, These Days.

Look, the fact of the matter is, you don’t like Bon Jovi. That is your right, just like it is mine to LIKE them. Your opinion carries no more weight anywhere than mine does. The only place it matters is in your head. What DOES matter and what no one likes is when people think they, or their opinions DO matter more, or that their’s is better than others’.

And by the way, if you are going to get into a battle of popularity and actual numbers by thinking to list their two most successful albums (why you bothered to list the first I’ll never know), I wouldn’t go there if I were you. Your band against mine? Overall yours loses hands down, no contest. Not even CLOSE! You might want to check that out first, before spouting off once again without knowing what you’re talking about.

Derrik | 8/23/2009, 9:58 pm EST

I can’t believe some of these comments. The song is awesome and i caan’t wait for The Circle!!! The song is really inspiring and should make a lot of people happy when they listen to it. Its not always about the sound of the song sometimes its mor eabout what the song is saying!!! And i have only been a Bon Jovi fan for maybe 5 years, i mean i’m only 17, and i think this is just as good as their older stuff. Rock On, Bon Jovi!!

GLAMIDOL69 | 9/2/2009, 2:09 am EST

When it comes to being a BJ fan, no one can compare to me. The other fans are either crazier or more subtle than me but the new sonfg” We weren’t born to Follow” is not exactly “wanted dead or ALive” or “Blaze of Glory ” material. And do I know anyone else who digs Richie Sambora like crazy, but what he states here I’d have to disagree(i’ve only heard one song) The song has a heavy John Shanks influence and I really want Bon Jovi to get a heavier producer if they really want to get back to their rock roots. Peace to all !!

GLAMIDOL69 | 9/2/2009, 2:12 am EST

I completely agree with Hafiz as the song has a similar sound to that of “Born to be my Baby”. I guess hardcore fans would know this stuff.

I have been a huge fan of Bon Jovi since 1991. I have all of their albums. However, their music has definitely gone downhill every since Crush. Why won’t the band realize that These Days is their BEST ALBUM. I WISH they would make music like that album again and stop repeating the same cheesy, canned, music about his “life.”

yoman | 9/4/2009, 9:54 pm EST

cant wait till the circle comes out on november 10th i have all your cds except 7800 fahrenheit

Leo | 9/5/2009, 5:12 am EST

Hi guys. I personally didn’t like this new single. Same style as the HAND album, but worst. I love BJ, I’m fan, but after These Days they became too lame. They lost the rock attitude, and you guys have to agree with me, that’s clear.
I saw Ratt last year, and they still keep that attitude. Of course, they don’t sell like before, far away from BJ, but they rocked the place. Listen to the album Secret Society from Europe, rocker from first to last track, listen to Winger last album, elegant rock and roll, even the Scorpions and Whitesnake.
BJ is not the same than before, accept this, they just want to be popular and on the top forever. Listen to the new songs, where the hell are the Sambora great solos? Where’s David Bryan????? It’s all about Jon Bon Jovi guys, he’s the boss. The producer doesn’t help either, why John Shanks? Why not Bob Rock, Andy Johns, Ted Templeman, Richie Zito, Michael Wagener!!!!!
I watched the recent videos of Richie playing with BB King. Awesome solos!!!!! Why he doesn’t play any good solos like that anymore!!!!! This new single is not Born To Be My Baby, too far away from those years!
From all these last albums I prefer Bounce, but the rest is not just for me. And I wanted to write this just because I read “BJ return to rock” (Gosh, I’ve listened that phrase for the last ten years). Accept it guys, BJ will never be like the old great BJ.

The world WILL shift a little off center when Bon Jovi tours. I have followed this band since I could listen to music. I was born in 76′ so I was listening to them in 83′. I will so be there at the next tour around Dallas, TX. If they decide to skip Dallas, I am will to go to just about anywhere to see the greatest rock and roll icon in history. Bon Jovi rocks! Can’t remember when I wasn’t a Bon Jovi fan, but not everyone is going to like every song, I’ve got every album/CD and DVD there is about Bon Jovi and even I don’t LOVE every song, but no matter what, a TRUE Bon Jovi fan “gets it”. If your a true fan, you understand this band and what they are all about; optimistic rock; a message that you can make it; something to look forward to and to and a reason to hang on; inspiration. Sure, the music is gets to the bone, but listen to the message and you’ll see the true genious of Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, which is the reason Bon Jovi is STILL, after 25 years, as relevant as they are AND the top grossing touring band…facts are facts and Bon Jovi will always been the best rock band ever. period.

Nessie | 9/21/2009, 8:08 am EST

Anything from John & the boys is always good. The real big rock songs are always fantastic, whilst the romantic songs are amazing. How a band can sing both really well shows their talent and popularity. Even the fun songs have a place. What more can a fan want than all this variety. I’m 53 and can’t wait to see the boys again (hopefully in Sheffield), and not only will my 30 year old daughter be rocking, but this time my 2 grandaughters, age 7 and 10. Whilst my partner of 60 will be there rocking with us too. Don’t change John, we know you can give us what we want as we enjoy the great variety of what you bring us. Seen the stones, u2, guns n roses, whitesnake, foreigner and many more but John and the boys are the best.Leave it to the bon jovi fans to enjoy and love the band for who they are and the great music and happy times they bring to us. There past has made them what they are today. Long live Bon Jovi. No one does it like them and never will. It is obvious that they like to please us as they give a lot back to their live audience unlike some live bands.

I’m sure that Bon Jovi will come to Dallas. They’ve played here on the last few tours, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t this time. Looking forward to the new album & documentary.

I Have to agree with some of you, bon jovi does not sound like the old bon jovi, like in
These Days or keep the faith, but I´m still hoping they’ll get back to that
rockin place, in HAND they have one song that reminds me that time:
Dirty little secret, I want more of that kind of songs!!!. Well I´m a fan
since I was 11 and now I´m 28 years old, and the last time a saw them in a live
concert was in ‘95, so PLEASE COME TO ARGENTINA!!!. Kisses!!!

It’s about time!! We need some good rock and roll from a solid group. Thanks Bon Jovi you rock!!

zvonko from holland | 10/22/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Their songs are sometimes alike yeah but you only hear the songs they play on radio and tv.
A well known fact about JBJ, they inspire people of all ages, give them sun in time of rain with their lyrics. and their are one of the ‘old rockers’bands that stil get a full arena anywhere across the world jumping on their feet? maybe the next stones? their great amazing and true musicians instead of those artist who get their songs and image from their record companies.

Bon Jovi Rules!!
grtz from holland!

flyingeddies | 10/22/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Coming from a huge Bon Jovi fan (yeah, I know, everybody says that) I’m happy for new material. I do wish it rocked a little harder, and I’m hoping he keeps the politics out of it. But hey, new stuff is better than no stuff. Just ask a weary Van Halen fan.

joeybc2001 | 10/28/2009, 4:04 am EST

So Bon Jovi’s lyrics aren’t shakespeare?? Well, Kiss, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Def Leppard etc.. ain’t exactly lyrical bliss either – but they all make you forget the real world and lose yourself in Mother Rock’s arms for a while.

Rock ‘n’ Roll ain’t rocket science people – nor should it be!!
I’m 50, I’ve seen and heard a lot of good stuff and its still about the rock for me.
Go Bon Jovi!!

Richie is right when he says this cd rocks hard. It is an amazing cd, I have an advanced copy and wow. The best songs in my opinion are Brokenpromiseland, Superman Tonight which is a ballad, and Love’s the Only Rule, and they did experiment with different guitar sounds. Brokenpromiseland has an awesome intro. best cd since These Days, easily better then Lost Highway, Crush, Bounce and HAND

I’ve heard the new album, The Circle. Let me tell you it rocks! ROCKS! True, I’m a fan who likes anything they bring out, but this album is something else! The best album I have heard in years. FACT!

I think they played it quite safe with the first single… although it is good, the rest of the album blows it away!

Bhupendra | 10/30/2009, 1:59 am EST

Well it is more of a rock album.
Richie Sambora told Rolling Stone. “[The Circle] doesn’t sound like any other previous record.
I think he must get his ears checked. It is very much a Bon Jovi sound. Maybe coz of the previous country stuff he felt this way.
The songs are enjoyable and quite hard rocking. But no great stadium anthem rockers though. No catchy tunes either, and that’s what they were good at.
It takes a few listens get familiar with the songs.

bon jovi forever……

emo rockers should learn a lesson or two from some of the songs,,and metallica could take one too from “bullet”!!!!!!!!!!!

go richie….”we got a religion…u r GOD”

natjet | 11/2/2009, 2:36 am EST

love it loved it before and will love the next!!!

Nightving | 11/3/2009, 3:03 am EST

who says age matters..you’ll wanna take back thoes words after you see them LIVE.
Good going guys..where is Alec the original bass guitarist..we miss you and your style..and Hugh you’re doing great..keep the Band of Brothers getting more brothers…+

Jon | 11/4/2009, 11:27 am EST

they are older now… therefore composing much mature songs… they still rock!
the circle is going to be a mature rock band album.
THEY STILL HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE AN ENTIRE STADIUM JUMP AND SWEAT LIKE TEENAGERS!

Wooby | 11/4/2009, 1:02 pm EST

The new album is a very big disappointment for me. Flagship song is Follow (conveniently the first track), next track When We Were Beautiful is a departure from style…Bon Jovi doing U2, whom they used to loathe back in the late 80’s (how ironic). There are a few more forgettable tunes on the front half, and the back half is pure garbage. I am NOT a hater. In fact, I bide some of my spare time in a BJ tribute band. Rest assured, we have absolutely NO new material to add from this album. Maybe Follow. MAYBE. Until the novelty of a “new Bon Jovi song” burns out, then it’s done. Lost Highway was a diamond compared to this album, and that’s pathetic. Sad to see my idols pinching off a loaf like this just to justify a giant tour with the worst ticket prices in history. Hell, at least No Doubt made no qualms about touring for the sake of touring with no new album.

Shame on you, Jon. You were better than this.

SHAME.

R. Sambora Top 5 Guitarist? | 11/7/2009, 1:00 am EST

Compared to who? Who are the other 4?

Just | 11/7/2009, 11:53 am EST

Holy crap..I’ve been around since 80s when BJ started and still the same weak criticism to one band that, like it or not, still know how to make a classic rock tune. Something that only the lucky ones forgot. All the rest didn’t even really know ho to do it. So know i guess someone’s going to say that Beatles sucked because they sang “all you need is love lalala”? Dylan? nah..he’s an idiot he was just “knocking on heaven’s doors…AC/DC are you kidding me? highway to hell? oh please..trust me guys. Just face it. You don’t know a thing about rock. That’s it.

BJ YES | 11/9/2009, 1:50 pm EST

Does anyone know what songs they will be singing yet?

parlaz | 11/18/2009, 6:21 am EST
