The Black Eyed Peas made Hot 100 history this week by becoming the first artist to ever top the chart for 20 consecutive weeks. The E.N.D.’s first single “Boom Boom Pow” did the brunt of the work, spending 12 weeks at Number One before “I Gotta Feeling” came in as relief and occupied the top spot for the next eight weeks. The feat marks the first time in the Hot 100’s 51-year history that an artist has held on to the Number One spot for that many consecutive weeks.

Over the course of the past 20 weeks, the two singles combined have sold about 5.8 million digital tracks, with “Boom Boom Pow” remaining 2009’s biggest single with 3.8 million in digital sales alone. “With this kind of success your ego wants to take all the credit but your heart reminds your soul that it was your heart that had you slaving and creating in the studio making the music; breaking through comfort zones and tradition. In the fight between heart and ego my heart always wins,” Will.i.am said in a statement.

In related news, Jason Mraz also hit a milestone this week when “I’m Yours” enjoyed its 70th consecutive week on the Hot 100, breaking a record previously set in 1998 by LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live.” “I’m Yours” now ranks as the third best selling digital single all time with sales in excess of four million copies. The song also shows no signs of dropping off the Hot 100 anytime soon: “I’m Yours” finished the week at Number 23, up from Number 35 last week, so that means after 70 weeks on the chart, it’s actually resurging. The only song currently on the Hot 100 that comes almost within 20 weeks of Mraz’s record is Taylor Swift’s “Love Story,” which has spent 48 weeks on the chart.

Also, recordbreaking is that I haven’t heard either one of those songs, or anything off of Black Eyed Peas lastest album. This is how disconnected the music industry is from the average music fan.

Never heard the BEP song, wasn’t even aware of a new album.

But that Mraz song is actually pretty sick.

StrummerJones | 8/19/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Wow. Why? These songs are both terrible.

BIlly | 8/19/2009, 6:58 pm EST

@JP – or how disconnected you are from the average music record. I think if a record can stay on a chart for 70 weeks or be the #1 for 20 weeks its doing something right.

Haha.

It certainly has been a very slow year for music, even with the death of Jacko. The best music released this year have all had very short chart runs, particularly Springsteen’s latest.

I think it’s as sad as anything that BEP can top any chart for any amount of time!

I won’t lie. As much as I enjoy those songs. They are waaaay too overplayed and i’m starting to get sick of them.

jason mraz is incredably talented and anyone who says otherwise obviously doesn’t understand beautiful music

I buy an average of 5 CD’s a month. I don’t rely on radio or music network for tunes, because if they are playing music it’s the same ten songs that are being marketed for teenage girls. I usually go to music web sites like this one and go to record stores and see what catches my eyes and ears.

The point I’m trying to make is that ten or fifteen years ago. If an artist or band had a #1 song for 20 weeks, there will be no place you can go that you can avoid it. They would even make references to it on late night talk shows. You would hear that song everyone and people would be talking about it. Did anyone know that the Black Eyed Peas even had a number one song this year? Judging from other posts here, I’m not the only one who feels this way.

these are your record-breaking hits? America, you suck ;-)

All you guys are living under rocks. These songs are all good. Especially the BEP songs. Jason Mraz is okay. “I’m Yours” is actually getting on my nerves now.

JP | 8/22/2009, 11:28 pm EST

I dare say that you are living under the rock. Have you heard the lastest from Spinnerette, Ida Maria, The Gossip, Tinted Windows, Among The Ash & Oak, or anybody but the same 10 to 20 songs from the same 10 to 20 artists that gets played on the radio everyday?

Decabear | 8/24/2009, 11:07 pm EST

I like to think that I appreciate all forms of music, from the very eclectic to the most mainstream. I think there’s always something to learn.

That said, “Boom Boom Pow” is one of the most uninspired chart-toppers I’ve heard in the last couple years. I’m a bit miffed that this was a song that got to break records; not one of BEP’s better efforts. As far as the other song here, “I’m Yours” is a very typical 1-5-6-4 pop song but still nice. Whatever.

i’ve got 2 words to say to you:
don’t be a nerd, be the coolest bee you can be or else you’ll end up smiting the meek with your stupid faces.
