Billy Corgan officially announced that drummer Mike Byrne is now a member of Smashing Pumpkins, adding that the 19-year-old will make his official debut on the band’s next tour and album. Corgan also hinted that an announcement regarding that album — the Pumpkins’ first since 2007’s Zeitgeist — would be made in September. “I’m super excited to be playing with the band. Dream come true, man,” Byrne said on the Pumpkins’ official site. As Rock Daily previously reported, Corgan held open auditions for a new drummer after original member Jimmy Chamberlin left the group in March because he couldn’t just “cash the check,” as Chamberlin put it.

“Through the open audition process, I was astounded by how many great drummers there were that wanted the chance to try out for The Pumpkins. We counted over 1,000 submissions, and what made Mike stand out was he just seemed to have that X-factor that all the great drummers have, a stunning blend of power, speed, and grace,” Corgan said of Byrne. “I’m excited to work with him moving forward — he truly deserves this opportunity. I believe in my heart he will push me to be a better musician.” According to Byrne, the rigorous audition process included jamming for 15 minutes and talking about Fugazi for 15 minutes.

Byrne, who was a Berklee School of Music freshman before being recruited by Corgan, previously performed with Portland, Oregon-based bands Moses, Smell the Roses and Mercury Tree. Byrne saw the Pumpkins perform live in 2007 during the Zeitgeist tour, where the band impressed Byrne “because the band was so rooted in the idea of kind of being like a musical shape-shifter,” the drummer said. In June, it was rumored that Byrne was Billy’s new drummer after the two began working on demos together, but no official statement was made regarding Byrne’s status until last night.

Before Byrne makes his Smashing Pumpkins debut, the drummer will perform six shows with Corgan and the Spirits in the Sky, a tribute band to the Seeds’ Sky Saxon. Check out the group’s newly-announced tour dates below:

August 26 – Visalia, CA @ Tazzaria
August 27 – Santa Barbara, CA @ Muddy Waters
August 28 – Long Beach, CA @ Open
August 29 – Pioneertown, CA @ Pappy & Harriet’s Palace
August 30 – San Diego, CA @ Che Cafe
August 31 – Los Angeles, CA @ Hotel Cafe

SMASHING | 8/18/2009, 10:10 am EST

enough billy | 8/18/2009, 10:31 am EST

haha that must be billy corgan tooting his own horn.he’s pretentious enough to post his own comments. hey smashing i hate fall out boy too but at least they got a career and aren’t some bald vampire freak who doesn’t even relate to emo kids anymore!

sp fan, but come on | 8/18/2009, 10:32 am EST

change the name already, Billy!

maki | 8/18/2009, 10:37 am EST

why is this “band” even called Smashing Pumpkins?

enough billy | 8/18/2009, 10:53 am EST

he should call this band “hanging on to the past” or “even courtney love doesn’t return my calls”

Billy Kohrghin | 8/18/2009, 11:31 am EST

Great pic! Love it.

Jono | 8/18/2009, 11:35 am EST

Corgan can’t go away. The world needs him. Rock on Billy… f#ck the haters.

Best guitarrist alive!

StiGuy | 8/18/2009, 12:37 pm EST

I agree, they should really just change the name. However, smashing pumpkins was an amzing band, the reason they were amazing was billy corgan so im not concerned about new band members.

Dude, you're over | 8/18/2009, 12:48 pm EST

Ignorance is Billy’s new best friend

JasonTH | 8/18/2009, 1:00 pm EST

I really liked ZEITGEIST and most of the songs he’s released since then, so I’m definitely going to check this out.

GLASS | 8/18/2009, 1:08 pm EST

Why does everyone hate on Billy? I mean sure Zeitgeist wasn’t the best pumpkins album, but I still really liked it! Shouldn’t we be happy that the pumpkins are back and making wonderful music again?

enough billy | 8/18/2009, 1:49 pm EST

nah, he should pack it in. quit buying his albums so he goes away. just download them for free and delete them when you realise they suck. your welcome.

Musstard | 8/18/2009, 1:55 pm EST

Billy is more pathetic than Axl Rose.

Iha | 8/18/2009, 2:12 pm EST

How bout the name
Sucking Dick-ens
Go away you bald headed goof. I would rather listen to hippos mate than your worthless music.

there you have it billy. the masses has spoken. (opens door) there you go billy, (hands billy tissue) don’t cry buddy.you can still re-issue siamese dream and put a bunch of useless b-sides and maybe a live dvd on it.(smirking)

gurney | 8/18/2009, 2:42 pm EST

@ Jono:
“Best guitarist alive”? So where does that place Slash, Brian May and Jimmy Page, just to name a few?

Annoyed with haters | 8/18/2009, 2:51 pm EST

Billy Corgan IS Smashing Pumpkins, he always has been, always will be. The rest of the bandmates are a revolving door of musicians that still try to cling to their Pumpkins fame.

Zeitgeist, while not their best album, but all these little pompous crybabies flip out because it didn’t sound anything like Gish. Cry me a river you tools.

Brown | 8/18/2009, 3:25 pm EST

I read a few topics. I respect your work and added blog to favorites.

Pslightly Psycho | 8/18/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Finally Corgan will be playing with a drummer as mature as he is.

LOL | 8/18/2009, 4:21 pm EST

Did someome say atleast “Fall out boy has a career?” Compared to the pumpkins? HAHAHAHA. Wow your poor little minds are warped. Yeah Fall out boy only has to sell another 25 million copies of recordings to even be considered in the same class of career…Moron.

transoniqjohnny | 8/18/2009, 5:22 pm EST

Newbie drummer-boy beware: Billy Zero will make you his tool. Get off that sinking ship NOW!

Adam | 8/18/2009, 7:29 pm EST

We have to draw the line here. There are two Smashing Pumpkins. Pre-2002 and Post-2002… I’m a Pre-2002 Smashing Pumpkins guy.

Honestly, still my favorite band of all time, but this new stuff? I can’t listen to it… why should I? It’s not very good, it sounds overproduced and there is no heart in it.

By the way whoever wrote:

“Finally Corgan will be playing with a drummer as mature as he is.”

That was funny.

Billy always said the Pumpkins were him and Jimmy… Jimmy is gone, as the pumpkins have been since 2000.

Give it up Billy, at least I could enjoy your solo work and Zwan.

Jono | 8/18/2009, 7:42 pm EST

@ gurney:
Hmmm… That’s my opinion. And this is an opinion section.

I’m not dissing your guitarists though. They are geniuses!

Don’t forget Prince.

matt | 8/18/2009, 7:57 pm EST

“Finally Corgan will be playing with a drummer as mature as he is.”

lol

Hunter | 8/18/2009, 7:57 pm EST

Billy Corgan doesn’t write good songs anymore.

Pumpkin Head | 8/18/2009, 10:25 pm EST

Billy is the man, granted he is not Jack White, who can do no wrong. Billy Puts together great songs. Zeitgeist was great, not Siamese Dream, but because it was totally different. He’s good and if this kid is good enough to replace Jimmy he must be great

SP forever! | 8/18/2009, 11:26 pm EST

1. Billy is an awesome musician/singer and writer.
2. Why don’t you people ever take into consideration guys like Robert Smith of The Cure who also have had a changing list of band-mates and kept the same band name? Why is it some big deal when it is a guy who thought up the name and hired ALL of the other band members in the first place?
3. The Smashing Pumpkins music is maturing and developing over time. Maybe your expectations should also.
:)

fuck | 8/19/2009, 12:18 am EST

@annoyed with haters:

fuck you, how could you say that the other members are still clingingto the fame that SP brought them? if they were, they would have reunited with Bill, for cash’s fucking sake. you’re the tool here. and no, i am an SP fan but only the earlier stuff. the way he fucking trampled over James and D’Arcy and how those two ignored his pleas for a reunion? serves Corgan right. i’d be more interested in what james Iha and d’Arcy would be doing than listen to this bald freak. and no, not everyone who hates Zeitgeist wants them to sound like Gish again. Zeitgeist fucking sucks, period.

Clint Eastwood | 8/19/2009, 1:42 am EST

It’s Billys band anyway, he can do whatever he wants. Jimmy rules and sad to see him gone. I don’t miss iha or d’arcy at all.

Can't Wait! | 8/19/2009, 9:22 am EST

Should be interesting to see the new drummer.

Lets face it… anybody that writes negative comments about the pumpkins have not put in the time to listen to the new music.

The mighty SP were great and ARE great!

Guru | 8/19/2009, 10:47 am EST

Billy give it up. Your music has zero relevance today. Your sound is out dated and no one can stand to work with you for longer than a year or two. Where is Zwan?

Hock Ptooey | 8/19/2009, 11:08 am EST

pewey

linda | 8/19/2009, 12:21 pm EST

this guys still around?

Sil | 8/19/2009, 2:36 pm EST

What is sad is that this man has become somewhat an in-joke of the industry, and dragged a legendary name with him.

James | 8/19/2009, 2:50 pm EST

I’d prefer Billy would become a guitarist of a good hard rock band. I like his guitar on all the albums, but the pumpkins are an ego thing for him now.

Jeff | 8/19/2009, 4:19 pm EST

Pumpkins ended it in 2000. And will never be again.

Treble | 8/19/2009, 4:29 pm EST

Shaving his head was the worst decision Billy ever made. Well the worst desicion next to kicking out his former bandmates. But when I look back on his days when he had long, flowing hair, he looked like a perfect cross between Marc Bolan and Axl Rose, he was so beautiful. Now he looks like Lex Luthor. Which is so funny, because it’s as if the outside matches the inside. If he were still good-looking, I have a feeling that there’d be more Corgan defenders on here, and they’d all be female.

wow | 8/19/2009, 11:15 pm EST

He looks like a constipated Uncle Fester that is strung out on crack.

old drummer | 8/19/2009, 11:55 pm EST

I don’t think any creative person, (and we all are by different degrees in different ways)is a “has been”. We are transforming ourselves and changing with each new moment. Music is just a way of living, and expressing this. All the bands mentioned here are on that endless treck, to better understand our condition, and our potential. I thankfully accept that gift, from all musicians. If we all just try, we’ll all get by.

Bob | 8/20/2009, 6:13 am EST

I don’t really care who is in the band; I have just given up on the guy. I was one of the few people who staunchly defended Adore when it came out (and still do), but I thought Machina, Zwan, and Zeitgeist were downright awful.

Jimmy was the pistons | 8/20/2009, 8:03 pm EST

This kid has nothing to lose. No one expects anything from the band anymore, and at least he’ll get the experience of dealing with someone like Billy Corgan for no matter how long. Oh, the stories he’ll tell his children . . .

michelejoann | 8/24/2009, 10:21 am EST

Billy, let it go.
Please.

JPAC | 8/24/2009, 3:42 pm EST

Sure, it sucks it’s not the original Pumpkins really, but some of the new stuff isn’t THAT bad. Some, Yes, BAD! But some isn’t bad at all. Is it wrong to just enjoy the music, despite where/who it comes from?
