Radiohead Officially Release “These Are My Twisted Words”

Radiohead formally released their new song “These Are My Twisted Words” as a free download today on their Dead Air Space Website. “We’ve been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished. We’re pretty proud of it,” guitarist Jonny Greenwood wrote, making no mention of the song’s leak. “There’s other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we’ve been practicing, and which we’ll probably play at this summer’s concerts. Hope you like it.” Radiohead have five concerts planned this month, starting with an August 21st performance at Austria’s Frequency Festival.

As Rock Daily previously reported, “These Are My Twisted Words” came out of nowhere last week after appearing on a Torrent site. An ASCII file that accompanied the song stated that “Twisted Words” was supposed to be released on August 17th, leading fans to speculate whether it would part of an EP called Wall of Ice due to the artwork that also came with the file. In the end, there was no EP, and as Rock Daily had hypothesized last week, “Twisted Words” was a stand-alone track fated for Radiohead’s Waste digital music store.

Contrary to reports on other Websites, the Wallofice.com site that popped up in the days following the leaked “These Are My Twisted Words” turned out to be a creation of someone not affiliated with the band. It’s been an active past couple weeks for Radiohead, who have slowly begun revealing new music for the first time since 2007’s In Rainbows. First, frontman Thom Yorke debuted a new song called “The Present Tense” at the Latitude Festival, then the band released a new track titled “Harry Patch (In Memory Of)” as a charity download. Fans can expect as least one more new song by year’s end when Yorke contributes a track to the soundtrack of the Twilight sequel New Moon.

agreed – great way to start the week :)

embarrassing track. a B-side at best. very disappointed.

raisedlefteyebrow | 8/17/2009, 10:08 am EST

Ha! It’s been “unleashed” for some time now.

jenga | 8/17/2009, 10:17 am EST

ugh. this is it? why did they bother recording this? crap. what a let down. man these guys are biting off pink floyd pretty hard.

versedandvested | 8/17/2009, 10:20 am EST

love the band, but this is clearly b-level stuff here. mostly inconsequential.

junk-in-da-trunk | 8/17/2009, 10:20 am EST

thom, keep your free music. i don’t want it if it’s going to be mediocre crap like this. stay in the studio, lock yourself in for a year and don’t come out till you finish the songs properly. j

radioshack sucks.

Jesse | 8/17/2009, 10:23 am EST

Awesome song! I can’t stop listening to it. Radiohead still seems to be up to something. New song clip posted on wallofice.com. Definitely sounds like authentic.

Tom | 8/17/2009, 10:24 am EST

Awesome, awesome song. I love the vibe. Even though there’s no EP at least we still got this cool song to listen to.

Mike | 8/17/2009, 11:10 am EST

It’s still not clear who created wallofice.com. Likely it was not the band, but we don’t know until they comment further, which they may never do.

Will Smiff | 8/17/2009, 11:30 am EST

YAWN

And I love Radiohead.

fydo1974 | 8/17/2009, 11:51 am EST

Great song!

timmmaaayyyyy | 8/17/2009, 11:56 am EST

Oh my, listen to what some of this lot say. I can’t believe the attitude of people who complain about FREE music. Those who think music should be free and expect it to be….give me a break. You think Radiohead spent years honing their craft, incur expenses and spend their lives making music for free? Radiohead have been most generous to their fans.Haters go take a long walk off a short pier.In Rainbows is still the best album of this decade, and you were offere to buy it for whatever you offered.

FREE | 8/17/2009, 12:15 pm EST

Free is free. To many people complaining is ridiculous and a waste of time.

freeshit | 8/17/2009, 12:33 pm EST

hey Timayyyyy, I’m going to crap in a box and send it to you for FREE. I know people like Free shit, and shit they can steal too. And, Radiohead know this best of all – that’s why they give their shit for free these days. They already made their money. But, they are probably hurting small bands who can’t afford to be so generous. Not that Radiohead care.

I don’t care if this is free or not. It’s a demo. It shouldn’t be passed off as their next great song, but they are doing it anyway because you pussy fanboys will take anything they stick up your ass.

Doogie | 8/17/2009, 12:38 pm EST

this is shit. can I send it back? Is there a Consumer Complaint Hotline? 1-800-FUC-THOM? Thanks.

JasonKendall | 8/17/2009, 12:43 pm EST

What an embarrassing new song for my one time favorite band. What happened to these guys? After OK Computer these guys lost the plot. Rainbows started to get it back, and now this??? Twisted words is just lazy for them. Twisted Sister try harder than this even though they suck.

Thom you can’t do better than this?

Chester | 8/17/2009, 12:47 pm EST

heard the song, didn’t bother downloading. Radiohead should come up with better songs and just have us pay for them. That would be a ground breaking idea. Paying for quality. Hmmm..I better patent that.

Keep this free crapola. I have better things to do with my time. Goodbye Radiosuck.

Chuck | 8/17/2009, 12:47 pm EST

Excellent track. Very cool soundscape. Can’t wait for the new Radiohead album. If you don’t get it, too bad for you. Can’t wait to listen to this track at high volume on my outdoor speakers with a good buzz at home tonight!

sarahd | 8/17/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Song blows. a very sad day for radiohead fans ;-(.

Romulus | 8/17/2009, 12:54 pm EST

This sucks? ummm..Yeah it’s a bit of a letdown I guess. Nothing lives up to the hype.

gwardonski | 8/17/2009, 12:57 pm EST

This song is a SHIT SANDWICH.

Reality Check | 8/17/2009, 1:04 pm EST

FREE is not a synonym for GOOD. Especially in this case. Everyone who’s saying “Hey, it’s free!” is missing the point.

ROBBY | 8/17/2009, 1:05 pm EST

Sonic Youth/Can influence? Nice.

Bob | 8/17/2009, 1:06 pm EST

A message from one Radiohead fan to other Radiohead fans:

Just because we like Radiohead does entitle us to tell other people that they “don’t get it.” Such behavior makes us seem like pretentious jerks. The last thing I want is to come across like some rabid Animal Collective fan.

This all said, I like this song a lot.

Bob | 8/17/2009, 1:07 pm EST

I meant, “does not entitle us.” Haha, whoops.

Jenna | 8/17/2009, 1:14 pm EST

I like it so STFU!

Good Song | 8/17/2009, 1:22 pm EST

I was disappointed that there was no Wall of Ice Ep (atease brainwashed me lol) but I guess there was no solid evidence. At least we have a new song so I am not complaining and neither should other people.

jbird | 8/17/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Song is taking up hard drive space and not getting me hard. moving to trash now. Radiocrap slack.

didgeridoo | 8/17/2009, 1:28 pm EST

funny…i was expecting something different. instead i’ve discovered that radiohead fans are the same as jonass brothers fans.

i hate hardcore fans, and it’s sad that radiohead have been reduced to the same things they fought against. Good night fannies and good riddance.

Natalie | 8/17/2009, 1:30 pm EST

I don’t understand any of you if you are actually a radiohead fan you would already know that their OK computer style of music has been gone for a VERY long time. It’s kind a pathetic to read the comments you can tell your not really fans because if your expecting thom to come up with another ok computer your insane their style of music has changed it isn’t 1997.

jonahthemale | 8/17/2009, 1:32 pm EST

ugh. This is FREE. Everything Free is good! even if it’s bad for you. My too favorits are radiohead and i still like miley cyrus. I hope they do a duet someday. i am happy to consume everything! i’ll consume you in back of starfucks if you like. ;-)

Monique | 8/17/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Radiohead be better off doing a rasta album they Should call it RADIODREAD!

i like them but this is not so good. oh well it just 1 song. I heard they wrote a song for Harry Potter! Seem lik e a sellout move to me. Never thought Radiohead would do this.

mrsmithers | 8/17/2009, 1:37 pm EST

this song is crap. YOU are crap!

Jeepers | 8/17/2009, 1:39 pm EST

Harry Potter?! WTF!?? Sellouts!!! can’t believe my fave band did this. fuck it. This song is shit too.

Anonymous | 8/17/2009, 1:40 pm EST

To me, it’s as good as anything on In Rainbows.

I still prefer Radiohead of the ‘Bends thru Amnesiac’ period.

But I still appreciate them in small doses.

Boy | 8/17/2009, 1:41 pm EST

I hear this and appreciate U2 even more.

Smitty | 8/17/2009, 1:42 pm EST

same old lameeee sound. sad.

danny boy | 8/17/2009, 1:44 pm EST

Digging this “ominous Krautrock” turn. Always wanted to hear more of the Can/Neu influence come through. I think it is going to be one of those tracks that sticks in the deep parts of the brain even though there is no obvious hook or poppy melody. Well done I say.

Learn How To Read | 8/17/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Kevin | 8/17/2009, 1:50 pm EST

You people are retarded! It’s not Harry Potter! It’s Harry Patch! He was the last British survivor of WW1! He died a week or so ago and they dedicated a song to him. Learn to read!

Garry-The-Gringo | 8/17/2009, 2:05 pm EST

So Radioheads Suck. So what.Get over it. Every band eventually sucks the big one. It’s not the end of the world. SUCKCESS KILLED THE RADIOHEADS.

Time for some new music.

To: Learn How To Read | 8/17/2009, 2:08 pm EST

Yes, Radiohead have the new Harry Patch (In Memory Of) download.

But Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway DID some music for Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire.

So you owe some people an apology.

Drunken Punch Up | 8/17/2009, 2:13 pm EST

That’s the great thing about Radiohead, they don’t even need Thom Yorke to sing to make great music. Bring on Reading!!!!!!!!!

P.S. U2 have a cause? They sold out big time, wasting loads of money on claw sets while trying to preach about poverty – what losers. I was one of the 88000 at Wembley – I wasn’t blown away. Bono is a bonehead.

U2 Got | 8/17/2009, 2:16 pm EST

Drunken Punch Up’s money. That’s funny.

Why Are | 8/17/2009, 2:18 pm EST

musicians the only group accused of being sellouts? Radiohead is a corporation. Radiohead is a business. Did anyone out ther eforget that?

ms | 8/17/2009, 2:31 pm EST

Radiohead is amazing, goddamn.

Bob | 8/17/2009, 2:39 pm EST

Jesus, you guys get this worked up over a random free Radiohead song? I really can’t decide whether the fanboys are more annoying or the detractors. Relax, people.

scatterbrain | 8/17/2009, 2:40 pm EST

Not many other bands out there are brave enough to make music in this vein. Nor offer something new for free for you to listen to. But does this make Radiohead suck? To give you something that they could have charged you for?
If this song makes you feel uncomfortable or ‘I don’t like it because it’s too unaccessible for my tastes’ then the band has achieved its goal. It’s not for the faint of heart. There’s lots of other music that’ll suit you.

But –

Don’t settle for mediocrity. Refuse to be a two-dimensional consumer.

MyIronicLung | 8/17/2009, 2:43 pm EST

Why all the negativity, trolls? Blink 182’s reunited, Green Day has a new album, and U2’s purchasing carbon offsets for their tour. There’s plenty to keep you occupied besides reposting the ever original “RADIOSHACK SUCKS” half a dozen times. I find it amusing that the people who wait for Radiohead articles to come out just so they can post lame, half-brained witticisms about a song and a band that most of them have never listened to call US Radiohead fans mindless lapdogs.

Wow. | 8/17/2009, 2:51 pm EST

What’s amazing to me is that this article gets all the negativity while the Kiss article is left nearly unscathed.

creep | 8/17/2009, 3:51 pm EST

i guess they are still relevant, but this is sub-par. sorry fans! got to call it like i hear it. glad it’s free! still have money for coffee ;-)

Arc Angel | 8/17/2009, 3:56 pm EST

Let’s be honest. this is nothing new. it borrows from other bands sounds and doesn’t introduce anything ground breaking or revolutionary. some of you may say ’so what, it’s a good song.’ Well you have a right to your opinion. that’s subjective. From where I sit, it’s like I’m witnessing the death of a band that was once great. It’s like they blew their load and forgot to enjoy the ride. Sad day for me, hearing this and saying this. But, that’s how I feel. Going to put Kid A on instead.

Rufus | 8/17/2009, 4:01 pm EST

I enjoy both Radiohead and U2. no sense hating on either band. But, I personally prefer U2’s sound and I think they write better songs. That’s my opinion. Radiohead have a great sound though. I think what U2 did from Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby, Radiohead kind of did with Ok Computer to Kid A. It was a remarkable change of focus. That said, i’m not feeling this song.

jingle Jangle | 8/17/2009, 4:04 pm EST

This can’t be the same Radiohead that did In Rainbows. This is just so-so. I would have thought they’d do something to really make us think. But this is kind of a snooze.

Ringa | 8/17/2009, 4:08 pm EST

I just laugh at how upset and pretentious Radiohead fans get. It’s like they think they are part of a secret society. Sorry to break it but Radiohead are mainstream folks. They played the same awards show as Miley Cyrus. Everybody knows who they are. The difference is Radiohead used to evolve and surprise us. This is not a good effort.

not-Injest | 8/17/2009, 4:14 pm EST

ha ha. okay. this is so complicated we couldn’t possibly get it or understand the greatness of this band. LOl. it’s not that groundbreaking. overall basic chords, simple rhythm, basically tonal, still whiney and self-defeating, nothing special with the guitar. whatever. this band used to put out interesting music. Hairy Patch was a better effort, but Yorke can’t sing and he’s too exposed in that song. And the orchestration is rudimentary and choppy. It was cut & pasted together i’m sure after it was played by real musicians. Johhny Greenwood should take composition 101. He just reveals how brilliant the Classical composers really were.

terra | 8/17/2009, 4:19 pm EST

this song should have come free with a AARP membership card. My dad likes this band but I am not feeling it. Radiohead are just getting old. time to put ‘em in the home.

“How so? This song sounds EXACTLY like the bulk of In Rainbows!” – Not Really. In Rainbows was actually pretty good. This isn’t a step forward for them. If anything it’s just noodling around. Glad they didn’t put it on an album.

Kevin | 8/17/2009, 4:36 pm EST

Good God people! It’s a random free song! It’s not like they said “this is the new Radiohead. Our whole next album will sound like this!” They put a song together and gave it out for free, and most of you are saying it’s the death of the band. Geez! Tough crowd!

Coda | 8/17/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Never thought I’d see the day that Radiohead write songs for mainstream teenager movies that suck. Ehh..radiohead are mainstream anymore. They need to come back and do a klezmer album as fuck you to their lame ‘alt’ wannabe fanboys.

I’ve always been surprised by the level to which people dislike Radiohead. I mean they’ve done everything: Pop-punk (in the vein of Green Day and Blink-182 believe it or not), alternative, experimental and avant-garde, jazz fusion, electronica, krautrock, orchestral pieces, even country on some of their b-sides for crying out loud! There’s literally something for everyone. Some of you people should actually give them a chance before you bash them.

Justin | 8/18/2009, 1:56 am EST

Why is it that people that “hate” Radiohead actually had any desire to check out this new song or even click on this article. Unless they’re just saying it sucks cause they’re idiots and haven’t actually heard it.
I like the dark vibe in the song, good background music for when you’re hunting some guy in dark alleys with a sword or can opener. People should relax, it’s just something they popped out that they liked, they don’t care about your expectations

HA HA HA | 8/18/2009, 2:30 am EST

and i love the new song… i’ve been listenin to it over and over and over and over again…

also checkout the artwork… its so creative and unique… radiohead always seems to surprise me…

Bob | 8/18/2009, 3:04 am EST

Well, the posters on this board have answered my question. Apparently, the Radiohead detractors ARE actually more rabid and irritating than the fanboys. Jeez, a random one-off free release is so bad that you can proclaim the band dead now? Last time I checked, In Rainbows was their most heralded release in years. I could honestly care less about this song, but you people are annoying. Get over yourselves.

Abe | 8/18/2009, 5:05 am EST

It’s funny how people revert to grade school insults when they don’t understand something. Clearly, the opinions of most musicians and music critics are not nearly as qualified as someone who can’t wrap their minds around anything Radiohead has done since “Creep.”

pete | 8/18/2009, 7:20 am EST

wait so are people here proclaiming that radiohead is actually “done” after the release of one decent track that in all likelihood is going to end up sounding much better in the context of its album? i mean for chrissakes the last thing they put out was friggin’ in rainbows. Wait till they put out a bad record (or even one that isn’t absolutely spectacular) before saying that the sky is falling

Cheko | 8/18/2009, 8:56 am EST

fanboys suck the life out of every band. radioheads can protect themselves. they don’t need you to grab their dicks for them. get a life and a girlfriend.

MangoManiac | 8/18/2009, 9:02 am EST

Lol you litle fan wankers get so upset that your band is getting old! Kid A was the last oka album. but no you guys got to go ans stroke your tiny salami over every little shitty track they put out. radiohead try to hard to be outsiders when clearly they are in the mainstream. they spend more time on how to hype tracks then on the actual content. song blows…look not everything they do is going to be gold. this is shit.

redanka | 8/18/2009, 9:05 am EST

Oh no! not my radiohead. this isn’t the band that i fell in love with. please spend more time on better songs! ;-(

MileyVirus | 8/18/2009, 9:09 am EST

Look, i’m a musician and I think this SUCKS! It’s a pretty basic track. You radiohead fans are so fucking pretentious! Just cause we don’t like it doesn’t mean we don’t ‘understand’ it you fucking art-for-arts-sake conceited dickheads.I’d pay to see the look on your pathetic faces when these douches break up ;-)

Oh and radiohead are as good as the Beatles?? give me a fucking break. fucking stupid ass shitheads. FUCK OFF.

MEATPIE | 8/18/2009, 9:29 am EST

//// SUCKCESS KILLED THE RADIOHEAD \\\\

Anonymous | 8/18/2009, 9:33 am EST

Yes, the chord changes immediately reminded me of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd.

But i wasn’t disappointed by that. I love that stuff!

thom yorke | 8/18/2009, 10:00 am EST

hello fans! (talking with lisp), just wanted to say hugs and kisses to all you special litte people! (snaps fingers and bobbles head.) thanks for all your money i just bought the most fab gucci european carry all! it goes good with my shoes! anyways toodles!

Wonka | 8/18/2009, 10:05 am EST

Radiohead are out of ideas so they are borrowing ideas from other bands great and not so good like Pink Floyd, U2, and Sonic Puke.

P.Stanley | 8/18/2009, 10:16 am EST

Other than Kiss, Radiohead are the greatest band in the history of our planet.

Expressway 2 Yr Skull | 8/18/2009, 10:46 am EST

“Radiohead are out of ideas so they are borrowing ideas from other bands great and not so good like Pink Floyd, U2, and Sonic Puke.”

Out of ideas eh? Name 5 things that they borrowed from each of those bands and maybe it’ll prove that you don’t have your head completely up your ass.

PS – Sonic Youth is one of the greatest bands ever. In my opinion Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo will always be better guitarists than Van Halen, Satarani, Malmsteen, or whatever cock rocker’s dick you metalheads are sucking now.

radiohead suck | 8/18/2009, 10:51 am EST

the bends was there last great album. why do you pretenious nerds insist on listening to this generic band.radio won’t even play them anymore.all they did was alienate there truer fans with crap like kid a and in rainbows.thom yorke could fart in a mic through a distortion pedal and you guys would cry out “genius!”

Chuck | 8/18/2009, 12:14 pm EST

That’s cuz Thom Yorke farting still sounds better than anything on the radio.

Radio doesn’t play them, because radio SUUUUCKS. Good bands don’t need radio play.

Coldplayer | 8/18/2009, 12:24 pm EST

Coldplay are the greatest band ever. Radiohead, U2, Keane they ALL copy from Coldplay. Coldplay had their sound first and I’m so tired of these other bands sucking from Chris Martin’s originality. Radiohead only wish they wer half as good as Coldplay!

RADIODEAD | 8/18/2009, 12:31 pm EST

RADIO DOES SUCK. BUT RADIOHEAD SUCK ALMOST AS BAD. WHY WOULD YOU NAME YOUR BAND FOR GETTING HEAD FROM RADIO IF YOU DON’T LIKE RADIO? OH, SO IRONIC AND ARTY. RADIOHEAD MUST BE SOOOO IMPORTANT. PRETENTIOUS SALAD TOSSERS.

DeadHead | 8/18/2009, 12:35 pm EST

Viva La Vida was so much better than In Rainbows. I don’t get what you fans like about these guys?! They’re horrible. Yorke sounds like a bloody hemmoroid.

Brian | 8/18/2009, 12:48 pm EST

WTF are you talking about??? Radiohead had that sound first your morons! Just that Coldplay did it better and Radiohead could no longer compete with them…so they had to come up with a different sound. Sad, because they got lost in their own assholes.

You guys are douchebags. | 8/18/2009, 1:39 pm EST

The more I read these comments the more I realize how stupid people who say Radiohead sucks are. I don’t like a lot of bands, but I don’t say they suck just because I don’t like them. That’s exactly what you assholes are doing. You haven’t given any substantive reasons why they do. You’re just talking out of your asses to piss people off. What’s funny is that if people attacked your favorite bands the way you’ve been attacking Radiohead, you wouldn’t have the balls to defend them like the Radiohead “fanboys” you’ve spent days bashing have been doing. Go get a fucking life.

radiohead suck | 8/18/2009, 1:58 pm EST

they should retire with whatever dignity they think they have left.i hope thom yorke breaks his neck doing that stupid wobble head dance that he does.

NeZar | 8/18/2009, 2:25 pm EST

Dear You guys are douchebags,

Why Radio Head SUCK:
1. Thom York Can’t Sing
2. Their songs are aimless drivel.
3. Guitar playing is Novice and not very inventive
4. They copy sounds too much from other bands
5. They haven’t really evolved their sound in 10 years.
6. They don’t write enough songs that are memorable
7. Tom York is a whiney mopey bitch that is mad at the world and he should just pull the trigger.
8. They do art-for-arts-sake. They approach making music as if they are baking cookies.
9. They are pretentious. Music is not sacred to them.
10. Too much HYPE.
11. They spend too much time marketing how to get peoples attention in alternative ways rather than making the music the focus.
12. They try too hard to look like they aren’t trying.
13. They sit around and complain about how they are going to release a song or album rather than talking about how they are making music.
14. Their fans are spooge heads.
15. With as many people as they have in the band the music lacks layers of detail.
16. THEY ARE NOTHING WITHOUT NIGEL GODRICH. He is the reason for their success and ‘their sound’.
17. They spend too much time complaining and little time doing something about it.
18. They keep pushing that they are anti-corporation when they are a huge corporation themselves. And with their model they put more and more out of jobs.
19. Thom Yorke’s lyrics are barely intelligible. Sometimes that’s fine if there’s a purpose, but it’s getting old.
20. THEY JUST SUCK.

Melissa | 8/18/2009, 2:39 pm EST

To You guys are Douches,

“What’s funny is that if people attacked your favorite bands the way you’ve been attacking Radiohead, you wouldn’t have the balls to defend them like the Radiohead “fanboys””

WHAT A LOSER. I wouldn’t waste my time because, unlike you, I have a life.

wow | 8/18/2009, 3:31 pm EST

It’s official. Radiohead haters are worse that their fanboys. Didn’t think it was possible. Oh well. U2 wins!

Nirvana Jam | 8/18/2009, 3:40 pm EST

Ditto. I came here expecting to see the legendary “Radiohead fanboy pretentiousness”. All I saw was a bunch of idiots being jerks. The song wasn’t bad. Nothing special IMO, but not bad.

Page 'n Clapton | 8/18/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Ha! Why all the fuss over the song? I actually kind of like it. Reminds me of old Floyd. I’ve never really listened to these guys. Maybe you kids are on to something.

Anonymous | 8/18/2009, 3:48 pm EST

In response to NeZar –

That was quite a list! You must have spent a lot of time on it! Thinking up all those reasons. Gosh! Spooge heads?! That was super!

Are you excited to start Grade 8 junior high this year? I bet! You’re sure to learn more about grammar this year! Exciting times!

But there’s one particular glaring error among many you’ve made – if Nigel Godrich is solely responisble for Radiohead’s ’success’, then it’s got to be Nigel Godrich, and not Radiohead, that sucks!

Make sense? Nor does your list, kiddo. Get some Wii time. Your couch will thank you for it.

NeZar | 8/18/2009, 3:59 pm EST

I’m sorry for making that Why Radiohead Suck list. My mom saw it and I’m grounded for 2 weeks and she’s making me listen to Radiohead’s entire back catalog on repeat. All my allowance is going toward the purchase of their discography, along with their singles releases so I can hear how good their b-sides are too.

I’m sorry everyone. I have poor taste in music and my punishment will make me see the light.

I’m sorry. Too much Green Day and Offspring on my MP3. My dad chucked it in the garbage and I’m forced to listen to something called vinyl now.

Black Frank | 8/18/2009, 3:59 pm EST

Very bland, boring song. I dig Radiohead, but they are without a doubt one of the most overrated bands of all time. Oh, and I like U2 better (for those keeping score at home).

NeZar | 8/18/2009, 4:20 pm EST

Oh i like the fanboy trolls. A guy here wanted reasons why I think radiohead sucks, and I gave it to him. That’s what he wanted. He said no one gave reasons. Now, because i tried to respect a fanboy’s wishes I’m getting trashed. whatever.

NeZar | 8/18/2009, 4:24 pm EST

oh…and the Troll who used my name to post shit is a fucking coward. Even if it was slightly humorous.

Kelly | 8/18/2009, 6:21 pm EST

Haven’t you heard that Coldplay are the greatest band in the world? Radiohead only wish they could be that original and good.

Zene | 8/18/2009, 6:24 pm EST

WTF – Radiohead are the best! They made the sound that everybody copyies. You guys just don’t get it cause your too stupid. Go back to your retard music and leave my band alone.

i would defend radiohead till i die. They will live on forever while you are still trying to lear n how to spell

Tyler | 8/18/2009, 6:28 pm EST

Coldplay? are you serious? you can’t even begin to understand how foolish you sound. Radiohead write music in every style and have influenced countless bands. they are respected by the world. Coldplay are more popular only becase dumbasses like you like them. Radiohead’s music will be recognized in 300 years as the some of the best music that was ever written and sent through pro tools. you guys don’t understand. you don’t know anything about music. go back to reading your dumb rollingstone article on Kiss.

T.YORKE | 8/18/2009, 6:44 pm EST

Ralph | 8/18/2009, 6:50 pm EST

Thom don’t listen to the haters here. I love you. Your music is simply the best. Radiohead fans unite! screw you haters!

GinoFarenelli | 8/18/2009, 6:56 pm EST

i heart radiohead. i see there’s a lot of haters here and it’s disturbing that you don’t understand how great they truly are. you should look deep inside and ask yourself why you are here. if it’s only to take up space that you need to jump off a wall of ice. move aside cause Radiohead are coming through. We will not stay silent. we will fight you. And we will win because you are stupid and dont understand and you have bad taste in music. you trolls keep saying bad stuff about my band and I dare you to come up with valid reasons why you dont like radiohead. you will be exposed for a half-witted fool! so go play with yourself. okay i’ve said my peace.

Bob | 8/18/2009, 6:59 pm EST

Wow, there are some really mean-spirited people here. Nothing like music to bring out the worst in us? Honestly, does it matter if Radiohead are good or bad? It’s not going to change anything in the grand scheme of things.

Lea | 8/18/2009, 7:01 pm EST

Thom, Johnny, Ed, Colin, Phil are better than Paul, John, Ringo, and George any day of the week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Radiohead!!!!!!!!!

Radiohead fans are going to take back this page. You wait and see.

Ed | 8/18/2009, 7:04 pm EST

If you are not a fan of radiohead then go fuck yourself.

Radiohead Rules…you haters are fools.

Ben | 8/18/2009, 7:28 pm EST

Seriously? Name 1 Rock band over the past 100 years that is better than Radiohead. You can’t handle the truth!!

RADIOHEAD | 8/18/2009, 7:28 pm EST

U2 is better than us i agree
we will never be like U2 because we whine allot

A-Bomb | 8/18/2009, 7:33 pm EST

U2 sucks. they bite off Radiohead. Radiohead are much more progressive than any band out there right now. U2 doesn’t have any song that’s better than a radiohead song. Edge can only play like 3 chords.

GET A REAL BAND Like RADIOHEAD.

RADIOHEAD | 8/18/2009, 7:33 pm EST

IF THERE WAS NO U2
THERE WOULD BE NO RADIOHEAD!
because U2 influenced us but we turned out to be emo, so we hate our lives and we write shitty tunes but hey some of you guys dig it!

we hate our name also! WTF IS RADIOHEAD?

Fix-U | 8/18/2009, 7:35 pm EST

I still think Coldplay are better. These guys were stealing coldplays ideas until they couldn’t match their sound..they couldn’t beat them. So, they changed their sound to this crap.

Gretsch DuoJet | 8/18/2009, 7:50 pm EST

Bad form – off topic. Shame on the last few posts.
It’s an uncomfortable song to listen to. One that takes some getting used to. Peel away the drones and you’ll find some comlex guitar work in the song.
If you’re a musician pick up your guitar and try figuring this one out yourself. This is why musicians who know what they’re talking about can admire the work in a song that, on the surface, sounds boring. Not for those with a short attention span (lots of inconsequential comments made by such a group here).

Good at Guitar Hero? Great. Go pick up an axe and figure out how to play a song like “These Are My Twisted Words”.

Jeddi | 8/18/2009, 7:50 pm EST

RS should just turn the magazine over to Radiohead. It’s our time Radiohead fans. All you haters are just jealous pricks. FUck you and your Led Zepplin and Metallica too!

Sean | 8/18/2009, 7:53 pm EST

Oh Ben,
On what you said ‘ “Seriously? Name 1 Rock band over the past 100 years that is better than Radiohead. You can’t handle the truth!!”

I don’t think Rock has been around for 100 years yet. And, I though you radiohead fans were supposed to be kind of smart

Thom Yorke | 8/18/2009, 10:44 pm EST

i’m so tired of this creative hoo-ha bullshit. i hate music.

John | 8/19/2009, 12:58 am EST

Radiohead sucks a big one.The worst band i have ever heard.

karma police | 8/19/2009, 1:07 am EST

people on here are angry…
i used to think radiohead was the be all and end all. live too.
then i saw animal collective three times this summer. that band whether you like them or hate them, just like radiohead are artistically creative. but it is perfectly alright to not like their sound, it’s not easily approachable, and by the way, Chris Martin from Coldplay cites Radiohead’s “The Bends” as one of his most influential albums. Radiohead created Coldplay. U2 and and Pink Floyd created Raiohead. Who created Animal Collective?

Chris | 8/19/2009, 3:26 am EST

Radiohead is a Talking Heads b-side

HA HA HA | 8/19/2009, 3:40 am EST

Those who think they know too much… just read this.. found this in an article i read

“Although Radiohead is not Britpop style band, many believe that their seminal albums – OK Computer and The Bends has been particularly influential on contemporary bands, like Athlete, Coldplay, Keane, Muse and Travis. However, it has become clear that the band isn’t so keen on the new generation of Britpop musicians, inspired by Radiohead’s work though they may be, and when asked in 2001 by The New Yorker: “How do you guys feel about the fact that bands like Travis, Coldplay, and Muse are making a career sounding exactly like your records did in 1997?”, Yorke replied with his usual wry wit: “Good luck with Kid A.” Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin, who frequently said that Radiohead has had a strong influence on his band as well as Thom Yorke is a cult figure to him and huge inspiration to his songwriting and musical development, recently spoke to a reporter: “We’re like an eager dog just yapping around their heels, and they’re trying to kick us away” he joked. “It’s like unrequited love. I’m in love with a lot of things. Some of those things
love me back. And some of them don’t ? and one of them is Radiohead.”

blah | 8/19/2009, 3:45 am EST

Perfect musically. He is too apologetic lyrically though. That is my only criticism. Good song though.

head | 8/19/2009, 5:38 am EST

What’s this immature discussion supposed to be about?

Do you think radiohead care what some dickheads think of their new song?
They just recorded a track cause they were in a creative mood and felt like releasing it. That’s it. End of story.

Who cares which band is the best band around? What a retarded question…if you don’t like what radiohead do, then listen to other stuff. Ridiculous.

Sean | 8/19/2009, 8:38 am EST

Mr. karma police – You want to know who created Animal Collective? The Beach Boys primarily.

Kevin | 8/19/2009, 8:44 am EST

Head: That’s exactly what I think about pretty much every one of these comment threads. It always starts out with some actual comments (usually from fans) then it turns into a massive thread of people going back and forth “Radiosucks are horrible! They blow goats!” and “You mom blows goats the song is awesome!” It never goes anywhere beyond that. These comment threads are honestly very useless and stupid.

GA | 8/19/2009, 11:35 am EST

The following is a whack-ass form of critique: “Musicians love it and think it’s original, and find it hard to replicate … therefore the song is good.” This is WRONG. Music is for an AUDIENCE. They need to be able to understand it, not as musicians, but as LISTENERS. This is why I hate Animal Collective, b/c it’s meant for insecure hipsters to say, “you just don’t understand it, that’s why you don’t like it.” LAME.

mwessy | 8/19/2009, 1:48 pm EST

Ha Ha Ha said it best: Read that persons post!

Kevin | 8/19/2009, 3:04 pm EST

Two of my favorite bands are Radiohead and Coldplay and I don’t think either ‘copy’ off of each other. I honestly can’t see Thom listening to Coldplay at all! I agree that both are an acquired taste, but to slam either one and say they “suck” is arrogant and close minded. There is a very strong distinction between fact and opinion.

Miranda | 8/19/2009, 3:15 pm EST

yeah but everybody knows that radiohead has copied Coldplay in the past. I’ve read that Thom doesnt think much of Coldplay but it sounded like he was more jealous than anything.

Sorry, but I didn’t think this song was very good.

Kevin | 8/19/2009, 3:29 pm EST

Miranda: What were they copied on? I’ve never heard that. I don’t really think it’s jealousy. Thom seems like a very keep-to-himself, finicky kinda guy.
I sorta agree with you. It’s not the best Radiohead song. But it’s not the worst. I think it’s just a throw away song they made. But definitely not the “death” of Radiohead like a lot of people are saying.

omeega | 8/19/2009, 5:21 pm EST

ok ,
coldplay was formed back in 1998
radiohead have been around since the early 90’s
.
in 1998 radiohead already had ok computer , the bends and pablo honey out .
coldplay started out half decent but have never evolved.
radiohead on the other hand have never sounded the same cd after cd.
if someone says that coldplay is the best band in the world … then why is every decent musician out there not agreeing?
because people who call coldplay the best band in the world are 12 year olds
and thats what coldplay does best :
alternative music for the ineducated mind.
think of them as the lil wayne of brit pop.
nough said.

Miranda | 8/19/2009, 6:30 pm EST

your mom screamed out ‘Chris Martin’ when the cashier at Walmart was hittin’ her from behind in Aisle 6. So, at least she has good taste in music. What Coldplay have that radiohead can never do is Melody. Thom Yorke can’t even sing. Chris Martin in the greatest living singer in the world. Even Your Mom knows that.

Huh. | 8/19/2009, 9:17 pm EST

@Miranda: Rob Halford would like to have a talk with you.

Brendan K. | 8/20/2009, 12:24 am EST

Radiohead do try too hard to be like Coldplay. But, I think people are on to them.

Listen to me | 8/20/2009, 1:39 am EST

As a fan of U2, Radiohead, and Coldplay, I think something needs to be said here. If you don’t like Radiohead, get off this page. You’re not going to be able to convince Radiohead fans that Thom Yorke sucks. Also, Radiohead is a huge influence on Coldplay. Saying that Coldplay influenced Radiohead proves that you don’t know what you’re talking about.

HA HA HA | 8/20/2009, 1:42 am EST

“we are just a lighter version of RADIOHEAD” – Chris Martin said this in an interview.

“The biggest influence in our 12 memories album is RADIOHEAD” Travis said this after releasing the album.

i dont know whos copyin who.. radiohead started using different sound effects and stuff before coldplay was even born… and now we are hearing same type of effects in colplays songs..

btw.. if u are a true radiohead fan.. u’ll kno that they are always doing things differently… so this one is different to me… what made me more exited was how they released it, the leak, artwork, i was checkin DEAD AIR SPACE every 5 mins just to see if it was an official release or a leak… anyways… it was excitin and i was really happy that radiohead did somethin like this to make us happy.. so if ur not a radiohead fan, then go and do something else… why bother to comment on a band that u hate so much… just go and fuck ur ass with a bent spoon, sideways…

Just a guy | 8/20/2009, 3:34 am EST

Brendan K,
Are you nucking futs, Coldplay is the biggest ripoff of Radiohead.

KID B | 8/20/2009, 8:52 am EST

Well Radiohead try to write melodies like Coldplay but Thom Yorke can’t sing them. That’s where they fall short. So all they can do is moan, and throw in a lot of reverb to cover everything over especially his voice. And if you check their site every 5 minutes for some stupid new song then you are a fucking loser who gets head from a chihuahua and masturbates to Bruno the movie. radiohead are supposed to be musicians and yet all they do anymore is fuck around with stupid little drawings and fuck with their fans on how they are going to release something. and the fact that you guys are excited about it is pathetic. losers. get a life and make your own shitty music instead.

Hunter | 8/20/2009, 12:01 pm EST

“Radiohead try to write melodies like Coldplay…”

ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY OR STUPID?

This is a REAL quote

“We’re just dogs yapping at Radiohead’s heels” – Chris Martin

Hunter | 8/20/2009, 12:04 pm EST

By the way, someone below me also wrote that Radiohead have been around since the early 90s.. If you wanna get technical, Radiohead have been around since almost the mid-80s, only it was under the band name “On A Friday” (’cus that’s when they practiced).

Hunter | 8/20/2009, 12:09 pm EST

Seriously, ok seriously… Are all you people calling Radiohead Coldplay ripoffs just completely braindead dumbfuck morons? The Bends came out in 1995, EVERY Coldplay album sounds like it’s been trying to recreate half the songs on The Bends ever since. The other half of Coldplay’s music sounds like they’re trying to recreate music on OK Computer.

What happened? Is the world just completely upside for some people? This is like calling Pearl Jam Creed ripoffs, or calling Led Zeppelin The Darkness ripoffs, or calling The Beatles Oasis ripoffs.

If you think Radiohead has EVER ripped off Coldplay, you are a fucking idiot who knows nothing about music.

Jeanius | 8/20/2009, 1:24 pm EST

Pink Floyd were the originators. Radiohead merely copy the greats. Overrated.

Hunter | 8/20/2009, 3:41 pm EST

It’s a popular comparison, but those who really think Radiohead is so much like Pink Floyd, either don’t know Radiohead very well or don’t know Pink Floyd very well.

I own ALL of Pink Floyd’s albums, I own ALL of Radiohead’s albums. The only album between them that sounds similar in style is Dark Side of the Moon and Kid A, maybe In Rainbows a bit too. For the most part, Radiohead and Pink Floyd are different.

Bob | 8/20/2009, 4:44 pm EST

Hunter is right. Pink Floyd and Radiohead are more similar in approach and aesthetic, than they are in sound. I only see faint similarities in sound between the two bands – notably in tracks like Lucky or The Tourist, and on the guitar sounds in Morning Bell, but by and large, the two bands sound completely different.

DementedAvenger | 8/20/2009, 7:58 pm EST

Bob and Hunter –

I’m on your side here, but they’re more influenced by Floyd than they lead on! Dig deeper if you’re feeling ambitious. Jonny Greenwood is a closet Floyd fan but doesn’t admit it publicly.

Vox | 8/21/2009, 8:49 am EST

even this track sounds like Floyd. it seeps into nearly everything they do. it’s not just texturally either, even chord progressions are somewhat reminiscent. That said,

COLDPLAY RULES!!!!

just kidding.

Velmarg | 8/21/2009, 6:08 pm EST

“OK Computer” was actually the biggest inspiration for Coldplay from what I’ve read…

I personally think Thom Yorke’s a better singer than Chris Martin; much more raw emotion. Compare “Letdown” to anything Coldplay have done and, for pure emotional resonance, there’s really no contest.

As for “Twisted Words,” I’m a little disappointed, but I’m still anxious to hear what’s to come.

Brad Pitt | 8/22/2009, 11:13 am EST

@Hunter:

amen to that. Chris Martin isn’t, never was, and will never be in the same league as Thom Yorke. sure, he’s popular but his talent is inversely proportional to his fame. if there’s one thing i like about Chris Martin, it’s that he is becoming the king of self-sabotage.

and i hate him for bagging Gwyneth. fucking bastard.

Me | 8/22/2009, 2:59 pm EST

Wow, that song was garbage.

Tania | 8/22/2009, 10:36 pm EST

First.. love the song! … amaaazing!. mix between Amnesiac and In Rainbows.. love it!

Second… In my opinion Viva La vida is a really good album, but nobody can compare it with In Rainbows wich is a masterpiece
And I’m really glad that Coldplay release an album with a diferent sound, cause the other ones were very similar to OK Computer and The bends.. I personally really like X&Y , but I can’t denied that it’s quite similar to Ok Computer.
I personally think that Radiohead is the best band today .. but no the best band ever wich is Pink Floyd.
But anybody is free to think whatever they want, and to like any band they want :)
Peace!

Alex | 8/22/2009, 10:58 pm EST

Hey, let’s just forget all about “who copied who” and just enjoy the music!!

On second thought…I think I’m going to join the grudge match…
“The Beach Boys’ Wild Honey is better than Radiohead’s entire catalog!! And Pink Floyd was only good when Syd Barrett was in the band!!”

Aldo | 8/22/2009, 11:35 pm EST

I like it. I’m a Radiohead fan. I like Radiohead. I am not a Coldplay fan. Some people like Coldplay. It’s OK. If you like Coldplay, I would suggest listening to Coldplay. Or just turning on the radio.

Sherry | 8/22/2009, 11:51 pm EST

I agree with Aldo. Coldplay is blah and boring! RADIOHEAD RULES!

These battles over posted comments is hilarious…

Midas touching your hot spot | 8/23/2009, 6:19 pm EST

I think each radiohead album has surpassed its predecessor but in a cruel twist of physics and acoutic harmony it would seem that each previous album is also better than the one that comes after -go figure!
The Sound and Harmonics Alliance is looking into the matter and will hopefully be able to deliver a verdict soon. Someone in management has really screwed up this time and they will pay.

As to this track – i’d say it’s by radiohead and not coldplay. you can tell. Thom’s voice on this track shows identical oscillations to other songs he’s sung – it also sounds like him.

If chris martin tries to take the mustard for this track he’ll have to fight it out with thom and jonny. might get messy, but also get quite funny. jam doughnuts galore.

i’ve said enough

Midas touching your hot spot | 8/23/2009, 6:23 pm EST

leave coldplay alone.
they never hurt nobody but that little kid from vegas who they pinched when they saw him bullying his sister. the boy deserved it!
their music is sweet and fruitful with an odour of natural lemon.
Radiohead on the other hand are also wonderful but have an entirely different smell to their tracks – almost autumnal with whispers of cinnamon and barley but always an underlying brown sugar to soften the palate.

anyone else hungry?

cbet | 8/24/2009, 12:35 am EST

the guy alex that said floyd was only good when syd was in the band is an idiot…and coldplay blows…if you’ve ever heard them and liked it then what the fuck is wrong with you? and why do u like a great band like radiohead if you listen to garbage like coldplay. get perspective you dumbshits. thanks.

Downer | 8/24/2009, 9:57 am EST

‘…Thom, Johnny, Ed, Colin, Phil are better than Paul, John, Ringo, and George any day of the week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Radiohead!!!!!!!!!…’

@Lea-

I guess that’s why millions of people and I, know exactly who John, Paul, George, and Ringo are, but HAVE never heard of anyone in Radiohead except for Thom Yorke (barely!).

Having said that, U2 (Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby), and Radiohead (OK Computer) have made undisputable masterpieces, while Coldplay has not! I’ve NO DOUBT they probably will…soon!

All of these band are talented beyond what most of posters here will ever comprehend! Just keep on typing away nonsense, while they keep on doing work that, well, keeps you posting nonsense!!!

Hummingbird Flatulence | 8/24/2009, 11:07 am EST

There are no similarities between the beatles and radiohead except that both bands are english and both have all male members.
both bands are superb in not just my opinion, but in the opinion of 345,987 other UK residents, as evidenced by a quick online poll i took yesterday.
so let’s stop the arguing and agree that both bands are remarkable for the music they make, the impact they have on a lot of people and in their dress-sense.

As to the whole colplay/pink floyd debate, that is far more complex. One must take into account when discussing pink floyd, that a lot of lysergic acid diethylamide was often involved and that this had a pronounced effect on their ability to speak clearly or describe the gnomes that pattered at their toes.
Coldplay are quite nice blokes, but have a lot on their plates, including some roast beef and also peas in gravy. Therefore i don’t think it’s fair to bring them into the conversation, or to bring them to dinner.

Great art always polarises opinions, nuf said

Gavin | 8/25/2009, 10:40 pm EST

Hey, remember when U2 went their artistic stage in their musical careers? Radiohead has done that only they really fucking suck at it. You fans keep on saying that Radiohead is like no other but truth be told any idiot can make that kind of music and make it sound twice as good. It’s not over anyone’s head, except for like a five-year old. People who say Radiohead compare to the Beatles, shut the fuck up. You’re stupid and your opinion has no more merit. Also this song is like 5 minutes + but with a repetitive instrumental part for most of it and stupid short repetitive lyrics. I tried listening to these wankers but I mean it’s sonic, pretentious noise.

Gramsci | 8/26/2009, 5:55 pm EST

Gavin, love ya man but you gotta chill.
Radiohead are a great band

Gramsci | 8/26/2009, 5:56 pm EST

you say their music would maybe go over a 5 yr old’s head? sure it would, but not because of intellect, but because of short stature – 5 yr olds are usually pretty small.

Gramsci | 8/26/2009, 6:00 pm EST

If you took a 5 yr old with say, cerebral gigantism i’d wager that radiohead music would smack em right in the teeth. They’d eat the music, enjoy the taste, digest the goodness and it would probably cure them of their malady

Gramsci | 8/26/2009, 6:02 pm EST

that’s how good they are – you don’t see it or hear it because you’re too focussed on your britney spears and your cynthia nixon. you must let go of it all, zone in, become the monkey that you are and you will see the truth – it will be like a train on a track to blissville

Their fans are even bigger douches then they are. In hindsight, however if they got rid of that idiot Thom Yorke they would be good. They have good riffs like Airbag, The Bends, and the diseased rabbit song. They can arrange songs well too. Actually their first three albums were great. They just got lazy and people praise them for getting better when at best anything post-OK Computer is at best a piece of crap.
