Report: Doctor Left Jackson Alone After Administering Propofol

Sources close to the investigation into the death of Michael Jackson tell the Los Angeles Times the star’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, left Jackson alone in his bedroom after administering the powerful sedative Propofol the morning of Jackson’s death. The report indicates Murray felt comfortable leaving Jackson alone after administering the anesthetic as an insomnia treatment — and that Murray had given Jackson the drug repeatedly while under his employ — but when he returned from placing cellphone calls to family and employees, he found Jackson with just a faint pulse.

As Rock Daily previously reported, despite the fact that the results of the toxicology report remain sealed, authorities believe that Murray administered Propofol to Jackson in the hours before his death. An overdose of the sedative could cause a patient to stop breathing, which leads to a buildup of carbon dioxide buildup in the body that could result in sudden cardiac arrest. The question now, according to the LAT, is whether investigators can gather enough evidence to indict Murray on manslaughter charges.

Since a small amount of Propofol was found from Jackson’s home, authorities would have to prove that Murray was reckless when treating Jackson. The Los Angeles Times writes that Jackson was also taking other prescription drugs — as many as five doctors are being investigated, but Murray is the lone focus — further complicating the case. The raids of Murray’s Houston and Las Vegas offices were reportedly an attempt to see if Murray prescribed any other medication to Jackson that would possibly increased the effect of Propofol.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Jackson had been using Propofol for over a decade, which also hurts the manslaughter case against Murray. “When he accepted the job, he was not aware of any specific requirements regarding medications that Michael Jackson was taking or any addictions that he was suffering from,” Murray’s lawyer Ed Chernoff said yesterday, adding that after Murray moved to Los Angeles to be Jackson’s fulltime physician, “[Murray] realized that Michael Jackson had some very unusual problems.”

Dr. Murray will be going to jail, probably for at least manslaughter. His own lawyer admitted in today’s LA Times that after administering Propofol, Murray left Jackson alone to go and make several phone calls. Google for “propofol package insert” to see for yourself all of the warnings connected with its use, for example: “Respiration will be depressed and must be monitored to ensure adequate gas exchange…should be given by those trained in anesthesia… Patients should be constantly monitored and facilities for maintenance of a patent airway, artificial ventilation and oxygen enrichment and other resuscitative facilities should be readily available at all times.” And doctors are cautioned it “should not be administered by the person conducting the diagnostic or surgical procedure…,” let alone a doctor who then leaves to make phone calls. That’s negligence resulting in death=manslaughter.

neio | 8/13/2009, 3:11 pm EST

propofol is used only in surgery rooms under strict monitoring only…by knowing all these ..this doctor who is cardiologist performed it in a house and didn’t monitor the changes….for what and for whom???or carelessness??

Absolutely Reality Check! And isn’t it AMAZING how that Dr. can CALL everbody under the sun to COVER all the evidence to convict him… yet waited using LAME & criminal EXCUSES as to WHY he couldn’t call the Paramedics in time to give Michael a fighting chance to live!

The truth found out by CELL phone records will be that Dr. Murray was on the phone with his girlfriend down the street (who has his kid of his Adultery) and was ingrossed with arguing with her-as he’s proven irresponsible to all his wives and past children he refuses to Support; which cost the World our beloved Michael Jackson!
Now he can keep his PRACTICE in Prison where he belongs.
AEG should be somewhat responsible as well for their Negligence of providing such a doctor to trust Michael’s life with! Irresponsible with his OWN insures he”l be irresponsible with anyone! & all for the $$

No one deserves to die in such fashion. Nevertheless, Michael Jackson was a pathetic drug addict and zombie who hid behind the skirts of medical whores in order to camoflage his puerile existance. Overwhelming, credible evidence points to the truth underlying this saga. His demise is neither shocking nor sad – merely predictable.

Anything’s predictable when you “predict” it after it happens.

jon-paul | 8/13/2009, 6:14 pm EST

I certainly understand some of the bitterness espoused here; furthermore, I understand the contrary as well, as expressed by some of the commenters.

However, don’t you think its fair to be privy to all of the facts of this matter?

Two quick matters of interest: MJ had been using this particular drug for approximately 10 years. MJ also used and abused many other hyponotic drugs and of course narcotics, and the benzodiazpams.

Second matter: This method of dying is precisely what is used when a person has elected ‘assisted suicide’ as a means to an end.

Who are we, without facts or intimate knowledge, to condemn Conrad Murray? For all we know MJ may have requested this or perhaps more plausible is the notion of what else did MJ take in the 24 to 36 hours prior to his injection?

mary | 8/13/2009, 6:32 pm EST

Even though Michael Jackson may have wanted to use these drugs it is the MD’s responsibility to say “no” and also to monitor the patient with any administration. I am still so very sad about the loss of MJ…. I didn’t realize his passing would be so hard on me but it has been. His contribution to society has been so wonderful… he gave so much money to those in need. I do not believe the allegations that were made of him in regards to child molestation… those people were money hungry. I miss MJ.. he was bigger than life itself!

Sammi | 8/13/2009, 7:46 pm EST

No one can know what Michael’s life was like. He was an extraordiary individual. Everyone views him from their own point of view, which is not possible. Michael was too big for this world. I do believe he was innocent of the charges against him. Michael was pure and loving and giving. One reason he loved children is that they wanted nothing from him. They accepted him as the person, not the celebrity. No one can imagine what it would be like to be falsly accused of such horrific deeds. For anyone in their own community, it would be a nightmare. Here, with Michael, the whole world was watching and commenting and tearing him into pieces. It destroyed his soul, his core. Is it any wonder why he needed to medicate himself, why he needed to be put in an unconscious state. I am one that believes in personal responsibility, but in this case I don’t blame Michael one bit. He had every right to live his life as he saw fit. It was his face, his skin, his body. The tabloids would destroy him over and over. If there’s any lesson to be learned from his sad story (and there are many) it’s don’t buy into the bully mentality. People have feelings and can feel the pain of sheer meanness. Michael was a treasure and the world destroyed this beautiful treasure.

Pro-life | 8/13/2009, 9:30 pm EST

Everyone who praised Conrad Murray for killing MJ must be competing for dying under Dr. Murray’s care.

jmmowen | 8/13/2009, 10:50 pm EST

to all you people who dont like mj you will never know the truth.the news lies, the papers lie and its all jus for money.so all you people who think and belive they know everything your all fools.and i dont and believe you people will ever know wat mj went through.and you are not in position to condem him.he was a great singer and a very very talanted person no one can ever replace MJ not ever he was a special man.

hommy | 8/13/2009, 10:57 pm EST

Mj was my favourite singer. He was a very uniqe person. And now he is gone.I dont believe that it is the doctors fault that Mj died,i mean the man has a life too maybe it isnt lie yours but he has one,and its his personal battle,so i think that you should jus get over all your accusasions and live with the fact that GOD took him away from this cruel world and from you people who sit at home and critize

Michelle | 8/13/2009, 11:06 pm EST

I agree that Michael is an amazing soul. He helped as many as he could through out his life. He gave so much of himself, who can forget the child Farkus that was in need of a liver to save his life, and it was Michael who found one for him, saving this childs life. Lets mention the 39 charities that he supported. This man sang from his soul, listen to the lyrics to is songs, truly listen and one will see inside of the man beind the title King Of Pop. I do believe he was innocent of all charges. I sometimes sleep with my kids, and I too have water gun fights, and I am 33 years old, do you want to accuse me too? Michaels soul was innocent, all he wanted was love. I can not fathom being in his shoes, wanting love and all society could do was twist and turn every move I made into something negative, and I don’t blame him for denying media the interviews they wanted. Why would you want to invite someone in to have them turn everything you said around. No one has the right to judge another, what makes you so special to condem someone for something you dont agree with? Michael was an angel and society mocked him, so god has taken him home. I have to say shame on you to the people who mocked him, made fun of him, You were not in his shoes. You were not in the business at the age of 5 losing your childhood. As for this doctor. Manslaughter is not good enough, it should be murder. He knew what he was giving Michael. He knew it was not safe to use at home. He was thinking about the money, after all he was millons in debt, so he found his money bag. Yet he ended the life of another person, not caring, just seeing green. I hope and pray that this Doctor is punished for what he has done. He has robbed this world of an angel. He has taken from us a true loving soul. One that only asked to be loved and understood. RIP Michael you will never be forgotten. We Love You

I think dr. murry should go to jail. he was clear on what mj wanted. murry is negligent because he left the patient alone while making a phone call. he has no defense he was hire to take care of mj and he did not do that.

Marv | 8/14/2009, 1:52 pm EST

It doesn’t make a difference whether or not Michael Jackson was an addict and if the doctor was aware of any prior history on Michae, bottom line in all of this is that Michael should never have been hooked up to an IV with Propofol in a home setting, for sleep purposes, no matter how much money was offered and to whom. The doctor, being handsomely paid for a service he did not provide and/or take seriously, should never have left the room for even a second of time. Because there were no proper monitors for heart rate, etc. hooked up, Michael was at the mercy of the doctor’s constant watch, which apparently wasn’t of concern to the doctor. How would anyone feel in the middle of an operation (which is where Propofol is commonly used) and the anaesthesiologist went out for an extended coffee break? This is definitely, at the very least, manslaughter and negligence.

Bobbie | 8/14/2009, 1:53 pm EST

I don’t think this doctor should be charged with manslaughter,he should be charged with murder. He killed an icon,a musical legend,a son,a brother,a loving father,a caring giving person, our angel. I do not care what the story this doctor Murray person or his lawyer try to put out,a doctor does NOT at any time go make phone calls and leaving a patient under a dangerous drug,PERIOD. This person needs to be in jail forever.RIP MJ, your fans love you now and forever.

Meaghan | 8/14/2009, 4:57 pm EST

Michael would’ve gone to anyone to administer this drug. Someone at some would’ve done it for the amount of money he was paying. It was VERY VERY wrong and negligent of Dr Murray to leave Michael alone if in fact that’s what he did… it was VERY wrong that he even agreed to give it to him and he should be charged accordingly. However, Michael was an adult, an addict and very very pressured to “perform”. As an addict, you are not in your right frame of mind to even make sound judgment and I believe he did not have the right support system around him to persuade him to get in shape and deal with his issues in a healthier way. He was very aware of what he was asking for… I do not believe however, he was of sound mind to understand the serious consequences. When you’re an addict, you just want what you want and you will go about whatever means necessary to get it. I have a great respect for him and his talent, I have always enjoyed his music and feel very badly that he didn’t have the support necessary to stear him in the right direction.

NO ONE WILL EVER BE ABLE TO HAVE CLOSURE WITH MICHAELS DEATH–NOT HIS FAMILY OR FANS—AN UNEXPLAINED DEATH IS NEVER CLOSED IN HEART OR MIND. I BELIEVE WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL, THAT MICHAEL DID NOT INTEND TO DIE THAT DAY!!!!!I THINK ALL OF THE LEGAL DRUG DEALERS ( DOCTORS , NURSE, CHEF ) SHOULD BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEMISE OF A HUMAN BEING. THEY ALL TOOK RESPONSBILITY WHEN THEY ADMINISTERED DRUGS AT HOME THAT WERE NOT PRESCRIBED FOR THAT, THE CHEF THAT PUMPED HIS STOMACH FROM OVERDOSES AND DIDNT MAKE A MORALE JUDGEMENT TO SAY STOP AND GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED. MICHAEL WAS AFRAID OF HIS FATHER–JOE COULD HAVE STOPPED IT. NAUGHTY OR NICE, I THINK HE WOULD HAVE PROTECTED HIS GOLDMINE!!! WE HAVE LOST A GENUINE CARING HUMAN AND IT IS VERY SAD

After all that is said and done, it doesn’t ease the pain of losing the greatest pop star in the world…no, no, no, the pain of losing him will never heal, simply because he was physically and mentally abused from day one. We all watched it, heard it and bought it…It was the media and the fans that paid for all of it…When Michael Jackson said, ‘I love you from the bottom of my heart’, It unnerves me. Imagine never being able todo anything, anything without being followed, questioned etc etc etc. Personally having a drug that made me dead sounds great. They say there will never be another Michael Jackson…let us hope there will never be another Michael Jackson, never…As for all Media and fans, for who ever we admire, we must allow these people to live, respect their everyday privacy, for media and fans there should be restraining orders for the stars by law!!!!!!

Micheal would have found another Dr. to give this drug to him, yes. Perhaps maybe even a competent doctor but bottom line this is anesthesia and not given for insomnia. And you don;t leave him ALONE! It is sad to think he had to be in an induced coma to get sleep, not even restorative rest…and for ten years! The side effect of the other drugs he was taking is insomnia. I wish for the children’s sake if no other reason he would have gotten help.
Michael would have had the best doctors and support for rehabilitation but the tabloid media would have been vile.
I commend him for getting help in the past and admitting his problem.

I see videos of him pre-drug years and think how he absolutely sparkled.
You can have rich and famous.
No thanks.

RIP Michael.

Princess | 8/19/2009, 4:16 am EST

Did you guys realize that he was also JAMES BROWN’S physician?!?? I just found this out recently…..OMG, the man is a negligent murderer!! Michael, I have been crying every night since you passed….it’s not fair. Such a kind, gentle soul who only wanted to give his gift and share it with the world, and haters threw it right back in his face with lies and exxagerations. I am happy that the child finally came forward and told the truth about Michael, but why did it take his death for you to do so? Michael trusted this doctor with his life and he turned his back on medical ethics and morality for a few lousy dollars. He didn’t even try to deter Michael from being given this drug. Scumbag! Michael was too pure, sweet, & innocent for this world. His spirit is now blowing amongst the trees in the day; he teaches the angels to moonwalk across the sky, leaving a trail of stardust across the heavens at night……rest in peace, baby. I will celebrate our birthday with laughter and joy in my heart, because you are finally with God in peace now. I love you and God bless your beautiful, humbled soul! xoxo

A lot of people grew up listening to Michael Jackson. H obviously abused his wealth to do terrible things to his body. I am pretty sure that there would have been many many people who would have tried to stop him-but he was obviously too stubborn to listen to good advice. Doc Murray is not to be blamed for Michael’s death. It is Michael himself who bears the maximum responsibility. Once he got hooked onto such powerful drugs and kept taking them for a decade, I am surprised he lived this long. I am sorry to see him go but I wish he had listened to good advice.

Aizad | 8/26/2009, 1:06 pm EST

I cant imagine any sane person calling Propofol his “milk”

Antoinette | 11/16/2009, 10:15 pm EST

To all you haters – get off your high horses and take a good look in the mirror. Who are you to judge Michael Jackson? You have not walked 10feet in his shoes let alone a mile. We all wish he would have shunned the world and taken more good care of himself but we don’t know what he was going through. Can you even try to imagine what it would be like, being so famous that you could only get a taste of reality by disguising yourself so that no one recognised you, just to see what it was like to walk on the street without being hounded or ripped apart? Not to mention having a father that cared more about money than he did about being your father. Not to mention all the money grabbing, blood sucking leaches like the Chandlers and the Arvisos and countless others. Michael still had love in his heart despite being used and accused and judged and convicted by an illegitimate jury – the filthy media and the whole world – with unsubstantiated claims and accusations designed only to be sold for money. To those of you who think that Michael could be capable of doing anything indecent to any child answer this for me please – Why would the parents of any child who had been molested go to a lawyer before going to the police? It is easy to draw conclusions from accusations but it is harder to find the truth by investigating the evidence. None of the people who investigated the evidence could find anything damning against Michael. The more you dig the more you find out he was truly innocent. There, you have your answer. Michael would never have turned to drugs, if indeed he did, had he not been hounded and forced into a life of exile and seclusion. Away from the home that he loved – his paradise. He never found his home after that. He was such a gentleman and a gentle soul he could not take the torment. Now, he is gone, at least now leave him alone and leave us, his fans, to grieve in peace.

RN | 11/22/2009, 11:22 pm EST

A doctor’s job is to “Do No Harm”. Dr. Murray had no business giving Michael Jackson propofal because he was giving this drug for purposes the drug was no indicated for. And Dr. Murray was not a robot–he had researched enough to lace the propofal with lidocaine. Not only that, I believe that Dr. Murray used oxygen to bring Michael back when Michael was having trouble reviving from the night’s dose of propofal.
Michael Jackson made a bad decision that cost him his life. However, Dr. Murray should be prosecuted because he should have never given Michael this drug. Drug addicts do not go for help voluntarily–their back has to be up against the wall before they ask for help. Dr. Murray should have said no to Michael just like the nurse practitioner Cheryl Lee. (And don’t think that Michael didn’t wave money in front of Ms. Lee too.) If Dr. Murray and all the doctors and nurses said No! to Michael when Michael asked for this infusion of propofal, then Michael would either have to inject the drug himself or gotten help. And boy, do I wish that he had gotten help!
