As word spread of the death of guitar pioneer Les Paul today, many of those he influenced jumped online (and called up Rolling Stone) to share their tributes to the father of the electric six-string. The next issue will have more tributes, but here’s a survey of artists’ immediate reactions to the loss of one of the instruments’ true heroes:

Look back at Paul’s life in photos: Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and more stars with the father of the electric guitar.

“My friend & mentor Les Paul died today at 94, he was one of the most stellar human beings I’ve ever known, rest in peace Les.” — Slash

“Remembering Les Paul today. Just happened to have his namesake Gibson around my shoulder the last few days. Pictures of Les Paul all over the studio today. Very special day in here. You should wiki his life. Pretty amazing.” — John Mayer

“RIP Les Paul-thankyou for the instruments that changed the course of music. If u have ever “rocked” or “been rocked” u can thank Les Paul.” — Tom Morello

“The World Has Lost a Remarkable Innovator and Musician.” — the Donnas

“The music industry has lost a giant! I’m very saddened by the news of Les Paul’s passing. I was lucky enough to have known Les as a friend, and admired him as a musician and innovator. He forever changed the way we listen to music.” — Ace Frehley

“Les Paul set a standard for musicianship and innovation that remains unsurpassed. He was the original guitar hero, and the kindest of souls. Last October I joined him onstage at The Iridium club in NYC, and he was still shredding. He was and still is an inspiration to us all.” — Joe Satriani

“There are very few human beings in history who touched so many people the way Les Paul did. Not only musicians. But anyone that loved music. He shared his gifts with all of us and brought people together with his brilliance and devotion to music and the art of sound. It was a privilege to have met him. He will be incredibly missed. But our blessing is to know that his spirit and soul will live for eternity in music everywhere.” — The Hold Steady’s Tad Kubler, who shared this photo with us as well:

I cannot imagine, try as I might, the planet Earth minus the genius of Les Paul.
Absolutely a GIFT from the cosmos.
Thank you Mr. Paul… and say Hi to Mary.

Twice I saw Les Paul play at Fat Tuesdays, in NYC. It was like a house full of old friends.
Both times Les took the time to talk with me.
When I asked about the extra switches on his guitar Les took the time to actually demonstrate all of the various switches and tell me the history of this custom made “For Les Paul” by Gibson LP guitar and it’s twin, and then he even offered to let me play that guitar.
Les also signed a few photos for me, and was surprised that I had brought along only my LP pickguard.
Les Paul was an friendly person, with a sense of humor.
He knew how much he was revered by his fans, yet he seemed honored to play for us, his fans.

i never got good playing the guitar – but i still have my ‘78 cherry sunburst Gibson Les Paul Custom. it’s like owning a work of art by a master the likes of Van Gogh or Picasso. he changed the world.. in the best of ways.

Very saddened at Les Pauls passing but at least he had a long and fruitful life.
He left us all a legacy to be proud of and the guitar he left us with will ensure his name forever lives on.

A giant, indeed! Name me one person who has had the kind of impact on modern-day music that Les Paul did. Sadly, I don’t play guitar, but if you play an axe with a pickup, you owe Les.

He was an extraordinary talent and a driven innovator … and he will be badly missed.

Let us not mourn the passing of the great and inimitable Les Paul, but rather celebrate his life, inventions and music. He created the solid body electric guitar, multi-track recording, and even the tape echo which eveolved into today’s delay effects. No one could record anything today without a nod toward Les Pauls’ true genius.
Our deepest thanks and appreciation are yours, Les, for all you have done. I hope we continue to build on the fantastic groundwork you have laid for us.

Keep on rocking,
a fan

RIP Les Paul. It’s great to have one of your guitars and I’m sure your legacy will live on forever.

Skippy | 8/14/2009, 2:39 pm EST

Hey Les, stay away from Michael Jackson up there. He might want to grab your crotch and pretend your member is a Les Paul guitar.

Erlend from Norway | 8/14/2009, 5:23 pm EST

RIP! One of the greatest legends of music, Rock on!

therocker | 8/14/2009, 5:54 pm EST

Hey “skippy” show some class you fuckin idiot!

Stratocaster | 8/14/2009, 7:25 pm EST

A man who truly deserves the label of “legendary”. He and Leo Fender should come up with some AMAZING axes up there. Too bad we won’t be able to play them down here.

denzepp58 | 8/15/2009, 11:59 am EST

Skippy, for one thing, you have NO class or respect at all and are pretty much an idiot for that comment since the drug-addicted pedophile is not even “up there”. Les, thank you for giving one of the greatest gifts of all to all of us in music…we need more like you, especially now in the age of the Jonas Bros and the atrocity known as RAP….

Mr. Dana W. Carlson | 8/15/2009, 12:28 pm EST

Yeah, I would just like to say that the music world has lost a true giant when Les Paul passed away. Rock ‘N’ Roll, and music in general, would not be in existence without Les Paul. R.I.P.

John Bishoff | 8/15/2009, 2:20 pm EST

I was working on a tribute to Les Paul & Mary Ford based on the idea of how cool it would be to hear them sing about global warming, when I’d heard he died. So sad. He was my boyhood hero and created pop and rock records as we know it. The song is “The World Can’t Wait Until Tomorrow”. It’s on youtube.

Joakim from Norway | 8/15/2009, 7:47 pm EST

the father of music as we know it today, has passed to another place to rock out. and I know he will.

If you think about electric guitars, you think about Leo Fender and Les Paul. Two of the greatest contributors to music ever.

Best no doubt. Love Ya. God Bless.
Forever in our hearts… Through generations to come…

Jason A. | 8/21/2009, 1:34 am EST

God Bless you Les Paul. Thank you for giving us the wonderful sound of the electric guitar. It truly soothes the soul. when I first heard the sound of the electric guitar I was blown away by it and that’s when I decided that’s what I want to learn to play. R.I.P. Les, We’ll miss you! A Waukesha native.

S. Phillips | 8/22/2009, 8:05 pm EST

I saw and met Les twice at the Iridium Club in NYC. I wanted to meet the man responsible for the inventions that led to so much of the music I love.
Les was very friendly and down to earth; took time to not only chat but learn about everyone he met. It was like visiting with a favorite relative! I miss you, Les!!
