Les Paul, one of the most revered guitarists in history and the father of the electric guitar, passed away last night, August 12th at the age of 94. Paul’s manager confirmed to Rolling Stone that cause of death was respiratory failure, and a statement from Gibson indicates Paul was suffering from severe pneumonia and died at a hospital in White Plains, New York.

Read Rolling Stone’s full Les Paul obituary here.

An inductee of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy Hall of Fame, Paul is credited as the inventor of the electric body guitar and the pioneer of recording techniques like electronic echo and multi-tracking. Paul also had a celebrated career as both a solo artist and with singer Mary Ford, his wife until 1964. In 2003, Rolling Stone named Les Paul to our list of the Greatest Guitarists of All Time, and his influence on guitar greats who followed him is undeniable. “He was one of the most stellar human beings I’ve ever known,” Slash posted on his Twitter today, referring to Paul as his “friend and mentor.” Chickenfoot guitarist Joe Satriani released a statement that reads, “Les Paul set a standard for musicianship and innovation that remains unsurpassed. He was the original guitar hero, and the kindest of souls.”

Look back at Paul’s life in photos: Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and more stars with the father of the electric guitar.

In the early ’50s, Paul and Ford had a string of hits including Mockin’ Bird Hill,” “How High the Moon,” “The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise” and “Vaya Con Dios.” Paul also began experimenting with the electric guitar, building the Les Paul Recording Guitar, an instrument that allowed for “hot” pickups and “fatter” tone than the Fender on the market. Paul linked up with Gibson Guitars and his six-string became one of the guitar maker’s signatures.

Slash, Tom Morello and more guitarists remember Les Paul.

Around this time, Paul also made the first-ever eight-track recording, as well as the dual-pickup guitar, the 14-fret guitar, and various types of electronic transducers used both in guitars and recording studios. For his achievements as a technician, Paul was also inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2005, joining Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla.

Read Gibson’s CEO’s memories of Paul’s impact here.

Paul was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1915, a fact noted in the name of the 1980 Les Paul documentary The Wizard of Waukesha. Last November, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honored Paul with its annual American Music Masters Concert, where Slash, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Richie Sambora and the Patti Smith Group’s Lenny Kaye paid tribute to Paul (watch footage from the event, below). Kaye told the audience, “Before Les, guitars were only amplified. Les made them truly electric.” During his acceptance speech, Paul joked, “Everybody thought I was a guitar until I played here tonight.” One thing is for certain: Les Paul is responsible for changing the way rock & roll sounds and he will be greatly missed.

We all lost a friend today. Music and all the notes of music sheds a tear for the passing of Les Paul. For without Les Paul we would not have heard as many pleasing sounds in our lives. Our lives are richer and fuller because of the gifts of genius Les gave to the world of Music. You will be missed by all of us who knew him. He truly enriched everyone life with his instruments and innovations of sound.

Remembering Les Paul - '52 | 8/13/2009, 1:09 pm EST

When I was in high school (Liverpool, NY) I met Les Paul and Mary Ford who were playing Lowe’s State Theater in Syracuse. This was 1952. We talked and I became President of their Int’l Fan Club. My job was mainly distributing fan club pics, cards, etc. I visited his home in Mahwah, NJ when I was at Harvard. We stayed in touch over the years; seeing him perform in San Francisco where I settled and at Fat Tuesdays in NYC. A great musician, innovator and a fine person. His influence continues.

With all due respect to Les, Martin and Gibson both had 14-fret guitars in the late 20’s/early 30’s.

Chris Calvin | 8/13/2009, 1:13 pm EST

Les was a true genius inventor as well as just happening to be an accomplished guitarist. Trying to imagine the world of rock music without multi=track recording, slap echo, and the Les Paul Gibson guitars is simply impossible. I can’t think of anyone today that could ever possibly have that kind of major impact on our world as Les has. That he gigged into his 90’s was a source of pride and comfort to many an old musician I know. Lead on, Les!

Richard | 8/13/2009, 1:20 pm EST

Thank you sir.

Rock N Roll is indebted to you forever.

What we have once enjoyed we can never lose;
All that we love deeply, becomes a part of us.
Success does not happen with one event. It happens as a result of many small steps one takes to achieve their desired outcome. Every day take one small step and watch the magic happen. It will continue for old new and upcoming generations thanks to Mr. Paul, You will be missed my friend! Yet NEVER lost or forgotten!

Jim Fleming | 8/13/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Les had a great run, and did what he loved best till the end — playing guitar! I recall the day when I bought my 1974 ‘Black Beauty’ Les Paul. I thought I had reached guitar heaven, and looking back now, I realized that I had. Thanks for the memories Les!

I always hear about this artist or that artist being called a legend, but Les Paul was truly a legend. He changed the course of popular music. RIP

R.I.P Les Paul

I may be a huge Fender supporter and I don’t really like the guitar “Les Paul” but I respect him none the less

Electric Dave | 8/13/2009, 1:35 pm EST

He was not only a legend for all the obvious reasons, but he was also a very kind and generous spirit. I met him at the Iridium in 2008 and he signed my LP with a very personal message: To Dave–Keep on Pickin’. So that’s what I say to you now, Les, wherever you are: Keep on Pickin’!

jsrinny | 8/13/2009, 1:37 pm EST

RIP Les Paul

I met him about about 6 months ago at Iridium after his gig. He was kind an encouraging to my 14 year old guitarist son. A great man and a life well lived.

A true innovator and legend in music. Rest easy, Les.

Doug O | 8/13/2009, 1:46 pm EST

I was a kid during the sixties, when I saw my first Les Paul guitar n the window of a music store. It was custom Black Beauty model with gold hardware and up to that period in my life, I’d never seen anything so wonderful. I also had no idea who Les Paul was. I thought it was French for “The Paul” proving that my French was as bad as my guitar playing skills.

Jana Archard (Westfield, NJ) | 8/13/2009, 1:47 pm EST

“You’re ringing my bell baby”…was a comment Les made to me when I had my picture made with him at AES several years ago. It seems I was leaning too close to his hearing aid. ;>} What an amazing, awesome man!!!The bells rang in Heaven and called you home. I can only imagine the music playing in Heaven today. Rock on Les!!!

thank you les, without you my younger years would have been acoustic and in the 70s my parents would have probably still have their hearing today. I already need a hearing aid.The louder the better!Rock on in the big gig in heaven. we will miss you.

Actually the inventor of the electric guitar was Adolph Rickenbacker

Ben Torre | 8/13/2009, 2:35 pm EST

Terrible loss of a great man.

Without his innovations, stereo mixes as we know and love them today might not exist; all we would have are binaural recordings.

Despite arthritis and a broken arm that was pinned in playing position many decades ago, he still played out every week at an age when most are barely able to write their own name with clarity. He just wouldn’t let anything get in the way of what he wanted to do.

Amazing man. Truly amazing man. We all owe him a lot of thanks for his innovations and inspiration.

Goodbye Les, and thanks for all the ideas, innovations, and especially the great music.

I don’t know diddly squat about the technical aspects of music, but I am a huge lover of music, particularly rock music, and I know that such a love would not be so strong without the contributions of Les Paul. Thank you very much, your contributions to music shall never be forgotten or taken for granted.

@ Nrt4 and respectfulboy111 (what an ironic name), paying homage to one deceased person doesn’t mean you should knock down another. Michael Jackson’s contributions to music were (and still are) extremely important to music and have inspired countless musicians, probably including some people you listen. Believe it or not, it wasn’t just pop stars that were inspired by is music, you’d be surprised how many modern rockers loved his music and looked up to him as a musician.

Michael Jackson, burn in hell you child molesting freak. Little boys are safe from you at last.

Jbouti | 8/13/2009, 3:32 pm EST

Well said Glorydays. Can we just pay homage to Les ? All this negativity, about others really detracts from what he was really all about. It does a disservice to what should be a day of remembrance for a unique talent. Nothing else.

Johnny P. | 8/13/2009, 3:46 pm EST

I remember talking to him at Fat Tuesdays the first time I saw him play and he was so indulgent with me he almost let me tell him how many layers of maple a Les Paul is made from, until I stopped and realized how foolish I was being telling Les Paul how a Les Paul was made! He just smiled from ear to ear. Goodbye Les, and thanks.

We are One but we’re not the same. Thanks Les for U2’s most beautiful song. I Can’t Explain the sadness I feel today because Les, you gave the Who their sound and their name. Mr. Paul, you are the reason I listen to Aerosmith because your Gibson guitar sang with such Sweet Emotion. Maybe the Stairway to Heaven isn’t such a sad place because Zeppelin exploded into our hearts. And finally, you were a Ray of Light to a Michigan Rock & Roll Queen named Madonna-the day she first took the stage and recorded her songs, she chose Gibson as her guitar brand and a black Les Paul
as her instrument of choice
-it’s because of you that Our Lady
is the loud rocker she is today. Thank you Lester for making these good rock & roll memories that I’ll always have. Today is and should be a happy day because of what you did for rock & roll and
the rockers who play it every day.
Peace-rock & roll will stand tall and Live Forever!

I just wrote a 1000-word piece about the night in 1999 when I went to the Iridium Club in NYC to see/hear the master. He was not only a great, great guitarist, but actually loved what he did by bringing joy to so many people one show at a time. My greatest earthly possession, other than my children, is my 1998 Les Paul Standard with the inscription, “To Phil, play hard, Les Paul.”

Les, you are missed and loved my many millions of your fans! I hope you and Mary and Chet are opening tonight in Heaven!

As sad as his passing is, we should all be be really lucky that he made it all the way to 94. Most human beings never come close to living that long, and rock stars, forget it. Their life span is even shorter. If only Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, The Big Bopper, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Bon Scott, Phil Lynott, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Kurt Cobain, Robert Palmer, Michael Jackson and countless other unique talents lived as long as Les. Or even 10-15 years younger, it sure beats dying at 27 or 50.

I was fortunate to see Les Paul at the Iridium Jazz club in NYC last year. I went to the ten o’clock show and while waiting outside, someone towards the end of the line called the fire department to say that there was a fire on the roof of the jazz club (which there wasn’t). It was a prank to get some people in the line to get scared and leave.
When Les came out on stage, everyone was sooo excited, to see such a musical genius less than 10 feet from them! The show was great and I absolutely loved his music.
Les Paul was going to come out after the 10 o’clock show to sign stuff and I had brought my Les Paul Standard with me to get autographed. But he had a cold and decided not to come out. So I went up to the other guitar player and piano player to get them to sign my guitar and they did. The pianist offered to bring me backstage so I could still get my guitar autographed, and I did. He said to me ” How the hell did you get in here?” and i just pointed at the pianist. Les laughed. So I gave him my guitar and asked him to sign it. So he signed it and said “Nice guitar. Now get out of here!” Les Paul is really a funny guy. I’m glad I got to see him.
RIP

He said to me ” How the hell did you get in here?” and i just pointed at the pianist. Les laughed. So I gave him my guitar and asked him to sign it. So he signed it and said “Nice guitar. Now get out of here!” Les Paul is really a funny guy. I’m glad I got to see him.

A few years ago, I wrote an email to Les asking him how his original sound-on-sound tape machine worked. In interviews he always said the added fourth head was a, “record head,” but the only thing that made sense to me would be a PLAY head. Otherwise it would seem as though with each pass of the tape he would have been further and further out of sync due to the added time it would take for the tape to travel. Les never got back to me… he was probably busy with thinking about what would be important 50 years from now, not 50 years ago. I do hope the article written about him in Rolling Stone covers that perplexing little detail and put this conundrum to rest. That request aside (probably to David Fricke as I can think of no one better qualified to write Les’s obit), I feel glad for Les today. No more arthritis, no more broken arm. He can now play in heaven with all his remarkable capacity. Via Con Dios amigo.

Jbouti – I first heard Les Paul almost 60 years ago and have been a fan ever since. Sorry that you weren’t able to figure out that my comment was aimed at the person who wrote the obituary. Do you remember the words to the commercials Les Paul & Mary Ford did back in the day? I do . . .

While I am shocked to hear of the death of this great innovator of guitar and really music itself, I must say he will finally be able to rest in peace. I hope he gained everything he wanted to in his life and fulfilled all of his dreams, I know he has sure helped me on the way to accomplish my dreams by way of his inventions and innovations. Rest in peace.

Rest in peace, Mr. Les Paul. Today millions of guitarists play in your memory, yet none will play as well as you. The original guitar hero

John "Swani" Swan | 8/13/2009, 7:54 pm EST

I walked downstairs today and sitting on the couch was my 59 les paul and on the stand next to it is my 57 gold top still plugged in to the amp that I was playing just before going to bed, of all the guitars I’ve ever owned I have never truly loved anything like my les pauls. I told joey just yesterday how much I love them. The more I play them the more deeply my love grows. They go from 0 to light speed with ease and deliver a tone of perfection, yes they are heavy but well worth it mine are light at right around nine pounds jerry’s guitar was 15 pounds, so it’s all relative. I like the SG’s but leo made the strat and les made the paul and everthing else is a variation of those two pioneering axes. Long live les paul he will never really die for at this very moment someone is playing a les paul and there will probably never be a time again in history where somewhere in the world somebody has a les paul singing in their hands!

Thanks les for all the sweet sounds your imagination has given us, I bet there were lots of paul players in heaven to welcome back to the big band in the sky

He was also a kind man with a sharp wit and an easy laugh. Chasing Sound documentary is still the best. Music is something one can do in thier 90’s and still be entertaining. He was a true legend and nice guy..rare. He enjoyed it to the end too…ha..tho he did get frustrated with his hearing aid.

Vicky, Lenhartsville | 8/13/2009, 9:02 pm EST

My boyfriend and I saw Les @ the Irridium several years ago @ the later show. He was so gracious, he signed our two guitar pick guards by making a characature of himself with the letter P (for Paul). We have a picture of him doing this. He was a genius in so many ways and gracious. How blessed we are, to have seen the likes of him. WE’ll never forget.

RIP Les Paul and to those aholes here who have to put down MJ to make themselves feel better, well guess what, MJ was found NOT GUILTY so if you believe in America and our system, then you should believe MJ was NOT GUILTY. He was a child himself and I don’t believed he molested anyone. I do believe MJ was so high up in the chain he was a target. So instead of doggin MJ, morn Les Paul which is what the article is about.

i just wanted to say to the person signed in as “ANON A MISS” and any one else who is as disrespectful. what kind of comment is that suppose to be? what do you get out of spewing the trash that you spew? I have noticed much more of this insensitive ignorance in every facet of life lately, and its sad. why would you take the time to make my rejoicing read into a distracted now sour experience. please if you read this try and remember that this is not “YOUR WORLD” if every one acted as you then we wouldn’t have extraordinary people such as Mr.Les Paul around to give the gifts that he did. all i’am asking is to please try and remember to be respectful it doesn’t hurt anybody to do so.

thank you so very much Mr. Les Paul for your truly priceless gifts

I went to sleep over half of my life listening to my father bend the strings on a Les Paul. To say I love guitar solo’s is a understatement, but nothing compares to the sound of a Les Paul moaning the blues. Its said to have him go, but its his time to rest and embrace whatever is waiting for him on the other side.

Amazing that Les Paul lived so long, having said goodbye to so many of his contempories over the decades. It’s a sad day, but his legacy will live forever with so many guitarists who made their careers and names around Les Paul Gibson guitars and the many customs that can be found in any quality music store on the globe.

Thanks for the music Les!

As a very young child, my mother introduced me to the music of her generation. I heard Dorsey and Ellington and everything in between. I was immediately attracted to something different in the sound of Les Paul and Mary Ford. I would later discover it was Les Paul’s use of the electric guitar and his creative recording techniques. He as truly a pioneer and remained an innovator throughout his life. What a legacy!

While I’ve know about his mindblowing musical innovations for years, I only became a fan of him as a musician a few months ago, when I managed to see some black and white YouTube videos of his playing.

I was BLOWN AWAY. I don’t know how he gets overlooked so often, but I’m guessing it was because he was decades ahead of his time. So please, don’t just honor him as an innovator, or as the guy whose name is on your guitar. Honor him as a one-of-a-kind musician and artist as well.

We have truly lost an icon. I grew up in the 50’s listening to his music on the radio. His contributions to the music industry were magnificant. I know he will be missed by musicians & fans alike. The world of music is definately a much better place because of his genius. RIP Les

unknownsoundman | 8/15/2009, 3:44 am EST

Not only history, but ROCK AND ROLL itself, would be an alien sound without his daring, wisdom, and perseverance to create something new. Who knew that such simple things as a pick-up, a little amplification, and some extra heads on a tape machine could change the world in such a dramatic way. His insight will influence generations to come, as he has changed the world!
So long my friend, you ARE missed.

Just think: Of all the times to be on earth, so many of us lucky ones got to hear through, and about, something and someone called “Les Paul.” Players and listeners alike – here, at this span of time – got to share emotions that may have otherwise lain dormant, or worse, alive and isolated – like lost spirits. The guitars and recordings will live on, and we, we millions got to be here for it!!! May we all rest as well as he does. Blessings on you sir.

I am deeply saddened by his loss.
If he had not come along, modern music as it is today wouldn’t be possible. Many people know the instrument but not the man, His invention of multi track recording
was responsible for the birth of rock & roll and all that has followed. May he rest in heaven with all the gods of rock!

As a part-time musician, guitarist, Rock fan – I am truely saddened at the loss of Les Paul. Seeing him play was a dream come true and meeting him at the clubs was something I will never forget ! He was an Inspiration and Hero to me – he was friendly, funny …and one great guitar player ! Thank you Les !!!! You were the Greatest !!!

Ted McCarty | 8/25/2009, 12:04 am EST

Les Paul was a brilliant jazz guitarist. His endorsement of Gibson’s first solid body guitar helped to sell the new model in 1952 and after. But the key word is “endorsement.” Ted McCarty (1910-2001), President of Gibson, along with a team of designers, worked to produce Gibson’s first solid body guitar in 1951. They showed a prototype to Les Paul, who suggested it come in gold or black. They then asked him to endorse it, which he did to the tune of a royalty per each one sold. Later innovations, such as humbucking pickups (which gave the later models their great sound) also came from Gibson designers, not Les Paul. The Les Paul Specials, Juniors, and the SG style Les Paul of the early 60s were also Gibson, not Paul, designs. In fact, Les Paul hated the SG design so much he demanded his name be taken off it in the early 60s. Those are facts. Les Paul later claimed he designed the entire Les Paul guitar, but he was just… not being honest. It’s still a great guitar, and he’s still a great player, but that’s the truth. Also- it is a myth that he “invented” the first solid body guitar.

That he truly lived, this man named Lester “Les Paul” Polsfuss!

Have been thinking of Les’s passing ever since my recent visits in NYC where he played still, every week.
