Last night in London Pearl Jam broke out rarities, brand new songs and even the Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood. Playing in the legendary Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Eddie Vedder and Co. kicked off the evening with “Sometimes” from No Code before briefly visiting Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive,” which served as a segue into “Corduroy.” The band then introduced “The Fixer,” the first single from their upcoming Backspacer, to the 2,000 stoked fans packed inside the tiny venue.

Just four songs into the gig, frontman Vedder told the unsuspecting crowd, “You’re supposed to save the best for last, but we’re not,” as Wood sauntered onstage to lend his guitar skills to “All Along the Watchtower.” The group reveled in the moment while jamming out at length to the Dylan masterpiece before riding the momentum with inspired takes on old favorites “Why Go” and “Dissident.”

The energy of Wood’s appearance returned midway through the first set during “Even Flow” as Mike McCready bolstered the track with searing guitar leads and Matt Cameron added a thunderous drum solo. The band also dusted off gems including “Down,” “Present Tense” and “Low Light” for the fan club only audience. Pearl Jam wrapped up the 18-song first set with “Do the Evolution” and “Got Some,” another new track from Backspacer.

A solo Vedder opened the first encore with an acoustic performance of “The End,” the last track on the new album (watch it, below). The band returned for “Inside Job” and the crowd took over on “Betterman,” singing along on the first two verses with gusto. When the band launched into “Alive,” the room seemed to time-travel back to the early ’90s as crowd surfers stumbled their way to the front of the stage.

Answering the calls for a second encore, the band reclaimed the stage and Vedder spoke about his introduction to Arthur Alexander, the composer of their next tune, “Soldier of Love.” After rocking out to “State of Love and Trust” Pearl Jam enlisted Simon Townshend for help on his older brother’s tune “The Real Me” from the Who’s Quadrophenia. The familiar first notes of “Yellow Ledbetter” signaled the end as Vedder told the faithful, “This is how we say goodbye.”

Pearl Jam’s mini European tour continues Thursday in Rotterdam with additional stops in Berlin, Manchester and London’s O2 Arena. The band recently announced more U.S. dates this fall and will also play a half-dozen outdoor gigs in Australia and New Zealand. Backspacer is due out on September 20th.

“Brother” is not off the new album. It was written when the band first formed.. released as an instrumental on Lost Dogs and recently released with Vocals on the 10th anniversary version of “Ten”, yo.

Pearl Jam haven’t done anything good since Jack Irons was in the band.

Pearl Jam played three new songs off Backspacer: Got Some, The Fixer and The End (not Brother, as Nick already said).

Edd | 8/12/2009, 2:27 pm EST

I love it when great bands do things like that, and it seems like that show must have been amazing. Ronnie Wood is great, and so is Pearl Jam, and the set list, except for the exclusion of “Daughter”, is basically everything I would want to hear from them.

knucklehead | 8/12/2009, 2:41 pm EST

Why the fuck do you list it as photos of Pearl Jam when every single one is of Vedder? Show the band dude.

Bob | 8/12/2009, 2:55 pm EST

It was not a fan club only show…..

Pj lover | 8/12/2009, 2:56 pm EST

Eddies voice is sounding amazing.

Tim | 8/12/2009, 4:52 pm EST

Brother is not on Backspacer.

Steve | 8/12/2009, 5:14 pm EST

I love that they’re playing “The Real Me”. I’m praying they play it at one of the Chicago shows!

King Wack | 8/12/2009, 5:45 pm EST

Nice… Interstellar Overdrive… A nod to Syd Barrett in his home… Very nice guys! Come to Canada, eh?

Anonymous | 8/12/2009, 5:59 pm EST

LOVE Pearl Jam. A truly great band to see live in concert. One of the few that will actually vary their set list from city to city.

Naldo | 8/12/2009, 5:59 pm EST

Where the hell is the Boston date??!??!

Chris | 8/12/2009, 6:42 pm EST

release | 8/12/2009, 9:06 pm EST

was it a vedder solo show or a pearl jam concert? show some photos of the band!

GoTerps | 8/12/2009, 10:58 pm EST

Wow, playing The Real Me where The Who started (Shepherd’s Bush). And guest appearances by Ronnie Wood and Simon Townshend. Must have been phenomenal…

Ashkorsair | 8/13/2009, 4:06 am EST

it sucks they are coming to holland (where i live) and i dont have the moolah to go there. aaargh.
take a look at this setlist they played in london. its friggin awesome.

one thing i am abit concerned about is the overexposure of news on backspacer. ill bet ya all the build up will reflect in the score here on rs.
not for my personal score as all what pj does is best ever. (cept foxymob.)

Tog | 8/13/2009, 5:13 am EST

Really like “The End”, reminded me a bit of Footsteps or some thing that could’ve been on Vitalogy.

Eddie’s really startin to look like The Dude isn’t he?

Jade | 8/13/2009, 8:47 am EST

You’re such dicks. You obviously uploaded the Eddie solo video/Eddie solo picture to be wankers after the whole “ass wiping in Cincinnati” incident. Especially as the lighting for that song was shit. You could have got a much better video if you’d done a full band song.

Non fan club member | 8/13/2009, 9:07 am EST

“for the fan club only audience” ?? In no way was it a fan club only event.

kj | 8/13/2009, 11:27 am EST

it is nice to see and read about a relevent band kicking ass like rock n’ roll is supposed to on this site! it’s even nicer that people still love a band w/ talent and want to share that love w/ others who feel the same! pearl jam rocks and is what bands like u2 wish they still were…….rock on boys!

Jo | 8/13/2009, 11:30 am EST

Excellent show – we were right up front in the Empire it was sweaty emotional and a total triumph. The set list was amazing – and it wasn’t fanclub only HMV presales of Backspacer gave you a chance to get tickets after the fan club lottery. O2 Arena next – but it won’t come close to how good this night was – I felt like I was back in 1991.

JL | 8/13/2009, 12:26 pm EST

awesome setlist!
Can’t wait for the Philly/Spectrum Shows Halloween Weekend!

Anonymous | 8/13/2009, 3:47 pm EST

pearl jam rules!

Hunter | 8/13/2009, 8:01 pm EST

Wow I’m surprised how good “The End” is.

STFU | 8/13/2009, 8:48 pm EST

when I saw the end I thought is was The Doors version

Andrew | 8/13/2009, 9:55 pm EST

Rolling Stone, can you just accept Pearl Jam as the best band of all time yet? Ha

The Avett Brothers | 8/14/2009, 10:59 am EST

Pearl Jam? Wow, they are way past their prime. We are what music is today! We make a banjo hip! beat that……Grunge is Dead!

Mike B | 8/14/2009, 12:25 pm EST

Rollingstone – To the magazine that never gave Pearl Jam the credit derserved: Lick me – The fact that you left Mike Mcready and Stone Gossard off the 50 best living guitarist list, was criminal. Watch any PJ show, or just rent the DVDs and watch Mcready have sex with his axe – Im tired of this crap – They are by far the greatest American Rock band of all time and by the end will rival Zep, Beatles, Stones, and the Who for greatest all time. Open your eyes.

R dog | 8/14/2009, 4:55 pm EST

oh here we go… another Avette Brothers wannabe hipster. I’d rather watch cartoons than listen to a bunch of bozo’s try and rocknroll with banjo’s.

Jessica | 8/14/2009, 6:03 pm EST

Pearl Jam is the best band ever and all you people that are saying bad stuff about the band why don’t you find something better to do!

The Avett Brothers | 8/15/2009, 3:48 pm EST

Tell me when you find Osama, R Dog. You have lived in a cave for too long. Grunge is dead and actually I have listened to them for 6 years which spans over Mignonette, Four Thieves Gone, Gleam, Emotionalism and Gleam II. So just keeping up with the times instead of still thinking Grunge is hip. Each brother can play three instruments at a time and harmonize like the beach boys everly brothers etc., which is more than Pearl Jam has ever been able to do with their power chords and stolen guitar riffs.

TheCoz | 8/15/2009, 11:34 pm EST

Hey Avett Brothers,

Based on your previous post, is it safe to assume each brother is a master of the skin flute?

R Dog | 8/16/2009, 9:59 am EST

Let me know when you get back from the Lilith Fair Avett Brother’s lover… and if your counting I’ve been a fan of Pearl Jam since 1992, thats 17 years. PJ can play and has played more instruments on their records than an Avett Brother has been alive. Grunge may be dead, but Pearl Jam lives on. and sells out….. (clap of the hands) ARENA’S

The Avett Brothers | 8/16/2009, 8:08 pm EST

After all these wonderful albums PJ has made, has music’s #1 god Ricky Rubin begged to work with them? The answer is hell no there by the way. Which member is Pearl Jam can play the guitar and harmonica all the while jumping up and down and singing and hitting a kick drum while his brother plays the guitar and harmonizes perfectly while jumping and hitting a foot cymbal? Or maybe as either brother starts at the piano then can effortlessly move to a full drum kit and back to the piano without missing a beat? Hell Eddie can barely play the guitar. I have seen them 10 times live and it is the same show and void or passion and emotion like The Avetts have. Pj’s new album will flop miserably(Brendan O’Brien and his crappy bubblegum pop is all over the place on this one) you wont be able to say the same about the Avett’s that comes out a week later

Dave Ambruzzie | 8/16/2009, 8:11 pm EST

Avetts are better.

R dog | 8/16/2009, 11:06 pm EST

Avett brother’s fans are suckers for theatrics apparently. and I didn’t know that long bearded RIck Rubin was such a “Hip” producer. Who cares? Pearl Jam craft amazing rock songs. They are also very cool. Unlike the wigged out antics of avett brothers. Might as well go to a 6 year old birthday party and watch a clown!

matt | 8/17/2009, 12:34 am EST

from the comment on The Avett Brothers, that band sounds like a bunch of douchbags running around doing too much shit to impress, avett brothers never heard of them give less shit to care.

nick gay | 8/19/2009, 12:58 am EST

show the band not vedder

joey | 8/19/2009, 1:06 am EST

you really rock but stop showing off its not just you it you and the band

Kouba | 8/20/2009, 11:50 am EST

Interesting and informative. But will you write about this one more?

Crasty | 8/24/2009, 4:25 pm EST
