New Report Examines Reasons for Paula Abdul’s “American Idol” Split

It’s been exactly one week since Paula Abdul posted on Twitter that she would not be returning to American Idol for its ninth season. Since her announcement, contract squabbles, the addition of Kara DioGuardi as fourth judge and Abdul’s past criticism of Idol producers have been blamed for the split. According to the New York Times, all those reasons — and a handful more — factored into Abdul’s decision, with sources telling the paper that the pop star was fed up with being a punchline and eager to prove that she could be a success outside of the show. With NBC and ABC reportedly battling it out to secure Abdul’s services, the former judge seems to have proven her detractors wrong.

Look back at Season Eight of Idol, featuring Adam Lambert and Kris Allen.

“Paula didn’t place as much importance on remaining on the show as some other people did,” a person close to Abdul told the NYT. Abdul was earning far less money than her male counterparts, and felt that years of subtle jokes concerning her unreliability, alleged prescription drug addiction and a rumored affair with an AI contestant cost her endorsement deals. One incident in particular riled Abdul, who reportedly blamed her fellow co-stars’ comments for ruining an opportunity with a major clothing designer in 2006.

While Abdul seemed fine on the surface about the casting of Kara DioGuardi as Idol’s fourth judge, sources tell the Times Abdul took DioGuardi’s addition as a message from producers that Paula was replaceable. Abdul reportedly felt the show’s offer of $5 million per season, half of what she had requested and well less than both Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest, proved the point. Abdul scoffed at the $5 million deal, and while negotiations continued with Abdul’s new manager David Sonenberg, she took matters into her own hands and made her Twitter announcement.

I don’t blame her. Adding Kara DiGuardo and lowballing her is really a slap in the face after all these years (I know $5 million isn’t chump change, but when you consider what they’re paying the other hosts and how much money American Idol brings in, it was an insulting offer)

Rocky Rococco | 8/12/2009, 4:17 pm EST

…it was an insulting offer…
Insult me. Please

Rocky, you are an a-hole!

Happy now?

Troof | 8/12/2009, 5:06 pm EST

The proof will be in the ratings as to how much of an impact Paula Scabdul had on the show. I’ll grudge f her though, in a heartbeat. Get that pillow ready!

anonymous | 8/12/2009, 5:19 pm EST

As far as I’m concerned, I’m done with this show. The sole reason to watch was Paula’s whackyness and “what she’ll say/do next?”

Without her, absolutely no reason to tune in. Maybe others will feel the same way I do?? Time will tell.

Annie | 8/12/2009, 5:58 pm EST

In my opinion, it was a way to get Paula off the show……that is why they did not re-negotiate.
I thought this past year was so boring in relation to to the judges. Adding kara was a huge mistake in my book.

MM | 8/12/2009, 5:58 pm EST

Glad to see her go. As far as I am concerned, she was nothing more than a cotton candy like confection on camara and simply an overpaid cheerleader. Good riddance!

Kieran | 8/12/2009, 6:24 pm EST

I was never a big fan of Abdul as a judge because she didn’t offer the singers any coherent advice. Then again, the same can be said about Randy Jackson.

Even so, I am amused by the way so many people, especially in the media, claim to be “saddened” by Abdul’s departure. They’ve used her as a kicking bag for 8 years, having big laughs at her odd behavior (yes, it was odd). I don’t think people will miss her because they liked her so much. They will just miss having her to pick on.

metoo | 8/12/2009, 6:48 pm EST

I, too, would like to be insulted with that kind of money. Please. I’m glad she made her move tho because it beats them all to the punch of leaving and thereby the breakdown of the show. I have enjoyed the show some years but Idol should be done now, really. No, I mean, Really!

Becky lu | 8/12/2009, 7:26 pm EST

I wasn’t going to care or watch American Idol after Season 8 when Adam didn’t win and should have. So with Paula’s leaving the show, that just adds another reason for why I’m NOT returning to watch the show again.

anonymous | 8/12/2009, 7:31 pm EST

I do agree with Oddjob and shame on AI. I like Paula, but not her big fan. What they did to her is a big shame. They can afford to pay other judges that much money they can do better for Paula. This is like a slap on her face and then kick her out the door. Not even a “thank you” for help&support.

gotalife | 8/12/2009, 7:34 pm EST

who really gives a crap

EvenSteven | 8/12/2009, 7:42 pm EST

Paula was right to leave. Simon & Ryan are not worth half of what their getting paid. At least Paula has performed. She sings & dances, has awards to show for her efforts. She’s been there. Compared to the money A.I. has been bringing in, $10 mil was nothing. I’m sure Paula would rather work for half her salary elsewhere just out of principal. Reall, though, $5 mil ain’t much in those circles, so A.I. has made it very easy for the competition to woo her away. I know she’ll come out on top.

I will not watch AI again.. Paula was a good judge and has a big heart.. Paula you’ll be missed..

Kayla | 8/12/2009, 7:47 pm EST

AI will not be the same without Paula..I will not watch the show again. Paula was a good very good judge..She will be missed a great deal…

anonymous | 8/12/2009, 8:06 pm EST

I am with you all, It was definitely an insult. I know many thinks that she didn’t judge the contestants – but I do think actually she did judge them but in a different way- telling one contestant that s/he is a real good singer and another that they have good dresses- most certainly insinuate that the later ones didn’t perform well. I love paula. I really don’t like kara’s style “dawg”ing contestants. AI already had randy for that. Go paula, and I will not watch either- as I love paula.

kim | 8/12/2009, 10:29 pm EST

I do not understand why so many people say Paula is weird. I understand her 100% and know where she comes from. When she says, the singer was moving from colour to colour of a song, she was talking about the different layers of emotion and energy of a song. When a singer has a bad performance, she points out the obvious that the singer was dressing up loving for encouragement before giving her the bad news. She is moved by music and gets up to dance; she jumps up with joy for a great performance. She shows real emotion at bad news with sincere tears and jaw dropping at surprises. She is as real as anybody who is true to herself. She is sweet and she cares. She is a true artist who has a strong backbone and proudly stands up for herself. She is strong enough to weather all kinds of punch people throwing at her. She cries when she feels vulnerable and deserves to get praised and get her worth.

JD | 8/12/2009, 10:55 pm EST

I’m through with American Idol too. And it looks like next season will be a dud judging from the posters who won’t be watching. It’s really unfair that Simon gets $45 million and Paula gets a measly $5 million. However, I will watch Canadian Idol whenever they bring it back on the air.

Anon | 8/12/2009, 10:57 pm EST

I love you Paula !!!

GreyPlays | 8/13/2009, 12:08 am EST

I found it disrespectful to the contestants when she “performed” last season and lip-sync’d the song. If she can’t sing live, why should a contestant give a rip what she thinks of their performance?
I say good riddance. Having a couple hits (that were quite heavily “produced” by the way) doesn’t make her qualified to judge singing ability.

Brian Gallagher | 8/13/2009, 1:36 am EST

I always muted her comments. The only sound I hear when she attempted to talk is the sound of her “doctor” writing another script. Untalented bitch on a glorifeid karoake show.Bye Paula, who really cares?

anonymous | 8/13/2009, 3:34 am EST

i m with you paual

tv addict | 8/13/2009, 5:27 am EST

Kara’s a bore and adds nothing special to the show. Paula has an ‘it’ factor and adds personality. Idol was getitng boring. The best part is in the beginning when they audition a bunch of lunatics, and they shortened that part Then they added a couple of weeks in Hoillywood & that was a snoozefest. Their greed & disrespect of Paula is just another reason not to watch.

east meets west | 8/13/2009, 5:39 am EST

Considering how much money that show makes, I felt it was low class that they discontinued “Idol Gives Back.” Yes it more or less sucked, but it made a ton of $$$ for charity, and gave hollywood narcissist-types a chance to make asses of themselves…for charity.

Ann | 8/13/2009, 6:34 am EST

NO PAULA = NO IDOL. Bring her back!!!

just me | 8/13/2009, 9:21 am EST

paula was as important to that show, as simon is. i’m not watching anymore.

sandman | 8/13/2009, 2:32 pm EST

The produces will regret letting Paula go. Many people watched to see what Paula was going to do next. Suspense is gone.

sandman | 8/13/2009, 2:34 pm EST

The producers will regret letting Paula go. She was one of the main reason people watched idol. There is no longer suspense.

kat | 8/13/2009, 10:27 pm EST

Its a mistake to let Paula go. She provided a refreshing contrast to Simon. It will be boring withut her.

Imp | 8/13/2009, 11:16 pm EST

The show sucks either way.

Trina | 8/13/2009, 11:27 pm EST

i personally will not watch AI without Paula, cause she was funny with Simon, besides it will be back to the same old boring show without Adam to spruce it up….
Best of Luck Paula, Kara could not take you place in a million years…..

I am not going to watch AI without Paula. Paula was the show. I’ll find something else to watch on cold winter nights.

Sof | 8/17/2009, 11:42 pm EST

Paula Abdul is one of the ‘pillar’ in AI show that make the show stands out from any other talent show. AI is popular because of its main casts. I will definitely not watch the show anymore if Paula is not in the show.

Won't Watch | 8/18/2009, 10:03 am EST

I won’t watch Idol without Paula!

had no idea they made that much money my feeling is if you are doing the same job you have to get the same pay. is it because paula is a woman that she got payed less shame on A I.that has happened out here in the real world much to long and sure didnt expect it from a show so widely known where sooner or later people would find out how money everyone makes.
