Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” Coming To Theaters October 30th

8/10/09, 4:35 pm EST

The Michael Jackson estate and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that This Is It, a film comprised of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage of Jackson preparing for his 50-concert run at London’s O2 Arena, will be released in movie theaters on October 30th. As Rock Daily reported last week, the two sides struck a deal to release the footage, and were only awaiting the approval of a judge overseeing the Jackson estate case.

Look back at Jackson’s remarkable career, in photos.

According to a press release, the majority of the footage for This Is It was shot in the weeks before Jackson’s June 25th death, when rehearsals for the London shows were staged at Los Angeles’ Forum and Staples Center. Proceeds the Jackson estate receives from the film will go to the Michael Jackson Family Trust, with 80 percent benefiting Jackson’s children and mother. Randy Phillips and Paul Gongaware of AEG Live, the concert promoter who were producing the This Is It concerts, will serve as producers on the This Is It film.

“The world will see what our team was so fortunate to experience, which was the full commitment, passion and creativity that Michael put into this project. He was the architect of This Is It, and we were his builders,” said Kenny Ortega, who was the director of the planned This Is It concerts, in a statement. “It will also show Michael as one of the greatest entertainers in the world and one of the industry’s most creative minds. This Is It was Michael’s last theatrical work and although it was still a work in progress, I think the footage will show that the process was something that Michael deeply enjoyed and that it was clear that he was on his way to another theatrical triumph.

As Rock Daily previously reported, the deal with Sony was contingent on multiple factors. First, the film is required to be no longer than 150 minutes and must secure a PG rating. Also, the film can in no way show Jackson in a negative light, and a final cut of must be presented to the Jackson estate by October 2nd. Considering that there’s an estimated 100 hours of footage from the rehearsals — all filmed in high-definition and digital sound — that’s no small feat. The deal with Sony Pictures will also include a soundtrack, a director’s cut of the film and two special-edition DVDs.

In addition to the concert footage, select theaters will include some of the 3-D sequences that Jackson had planned for his This Is It concerts. Additionally, the film will also feature interviews from Jackson’s friends and collaborators and a retrospective over the King of Pop’s career. Fans are encouraged to keep eyes on the MichaelJackson.com Website as more information and clips from the upcoming film become available.

Cant wait to see it! I never got to see him live, had tickets but it wasnt meant to be. Role on Oct 30th!!!!

Troof | 8/10/2009, 5:42 pm EST

Kind of a half-assed legacy for a man who changed the way we listen to music and look at videos, but I’ll take it.

Dani | 8/10/2009, 5:56 pm EST

Not going to compare to the concert (I to had tickets) but its the next best thing. Really can’t wait to see the King in action.

We love you Michael!

Stevie | 8/10/2009, 6:23 pm EST

Michael touched me 10 yrs ago. He put his hands between my legs. I have not seen him since. I can’t wait for the movie. It will be like my dreams.

Anonymous | 8/10/2009, 6:26 pm EST

I still say they should have hired some of the best MJ impersonators, and did a full run thru of the show at the O2, at least once.

Clemento | 8/10/2009, 7:02 pm EST

I really like your blog and i respect your work. I’ll be a frequent visitor.

Dean Wien | 8/10/2009, 7:04 pm EST

I know Sony will make a lot of money on this, but in reality, it’s the perfect DVD to release. It will give all the people who bought tickets an opportunity to see the show that never happened, and it will show all of us how hard he was working to get the show together for the tour.

nineinchneil | 8/10/2009, 7:04 pm EST

talk about cashing in on his death. leave him alone you fuckers.

Anonymous | 8/10/2009, 8:00 pm EST

It may be ‘cashing in on his death’…

but the reality is… there were ONE MILLION tickets sold for these fifty O2 shows, BEFORE he died.

So there was already great interest to see this show.

It will give those ticket holders a sense of closure, to see their ‘concert that never was’…

And of course, the monetary benefits will help his children. Yeah, other people will profit from it along the way, but whatever…

chris | 8/10/2009, 9:59 pm EST

money.
money.
money.

lets not simply admire Michael Jackson for his music and stage performances and let him rest in peace, nope… not when theres money to be made. lets give in to morbid interest and quick cash.

i didnt know the guy, but im pretty sure MJ would not want this thing screened.

Anonymous | 8/11/2009, 1:24 am EST

The kids will make money from this. They deserve to be rewarded for their daddys brilliance. I will never get enough Michael Jackson. I am planning to see this over and over.

jadedeyes | 8/11/2009, 1:52 am EST

This is to be expected of course. I don’t think anyone bothered waiting for the dirt to fall before they started pillaging any available Jackson related material to milk for anything it was worth. A pop star of his magnitude is ripe for post mortem assimilation. I give it less than five years before we see a bio pic hitting theaters.

Go fantasizing in your rotten bedroom, don’t spit on RS website, you hopeless low life!

Ali Beer-Line | 8/11/2009, 11:25 am EST

They probably would have released a live dvd of the O2 shows. If they recorded rehearsals in hi-def, they would have definitely recorded some of the shows for dvd. Of course, I’m speculating, but the fact that they recorded rehearsals suggests to me that it was probably going to be included in a documentary of the shows.

JL | 8/11/2009, 12:24 pm EST

hopefully this will bomb @ the BO

R.I.P MJ | 8/11/2009, 12:41 pm EST

At least the fans will get to see what the show would have been like. I’m sure it will be amazing. Is it coming out on DVD or just in the cinema??? PLEASE REPLY…

Thanks
R.I.P MJ “Gone too soon”

Anonymous | 8/11/2009, 12:57 pm EST

i personally think it WILL bomb at the box office….

… but will sell VERY well on DVD.

To R.I.P MJ, | 8/11/2009, 12:59 pm EST

I think the plan is to release it in cinemas first… and then DVD later on. Like any movie.

If the movie is being released on October 30 in the cinemas… then DVD release probably won’t follow until early next year. Which kinda sucks, because they will miss the Christmas season, where it would make more money.

julius | 8/11/2009, 1:05 pm EST

even if you do a movie michael will never die in us and the world. michael was,is and will be the king of pop for life time. he was suround it with a hold bounch of idiots.

R.I.P MJ | 8/11/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Thank you to “to R.I.P MJ” for your help. :-) Yeah that does suck but it will prob. be a BIG box office hit!! I don’t know if i’ll go to see it at the cinema, but i’ll definitely be buying the dvd when it comes out.

R.I.P MJ | 8/11/2009, 1:42 pm EST

Julius, i agree with you. His music will live on forever. When MJ said:
“I’m alive and I’m here forever”
I believe he meant that his music will live forever and he will always be with us in spirit. :-)

MJ we love you.

Anonymous | 8/11/2009, 2:08 pm EST

i really don’t think it will do very well in the movie theaters (at least here in the US), but the DVD and soundtrack should be a big seller.

R.I.P MJ | 8/11/2009, 4:06 pm EST

To “anonymous”, yeah i think that the dvd’s will be a bigger success than in the cinemas. Not everyone may want to got to the cinema to watch it. I wouldn’t, i will just buy it on dvd. I personally think that they should just release it straight to dvd.

Arlene Tierney-Pierce | 8/11/2009, 7:20 pm EST

Michael Jackson was the greatest entertainer ther was. I wish people would remember all the good things that he did. I think the show will be great and my family and I will attend it and then buy the DVD.

I know that alot of people would like to see this movie!!!!!!
but remember why talk about movie when m.j. doesn’t have a resting place.

Anonymous | 8/11/2009, 8:31 pm EST

MJ does not have a resting place (despite the rumors that he was buried yesterday), because the Estate wants to maximize profit, and turn his final resting place, into a tourist attraction, ala Graceland.

Despite the bad vibes that followed his raid, I will bet he ends up back at Neverland, which will be opened to the public, with paid admission.

hello earth | 8/12/2009, 9:42 am EST

i’d rather watch his autopsy, it’d be just like an alien autopsy. what would they find in his stomach? a turkey baster? ta-da! a dildo? ta-da. they could air it on fox!

steve | 8/12/2009, 8:28 pm EST

MJ had a falling out with Sony and severed all ties. Look who was the first place the family (voultchers) went to to make money off of a family members death. And this family is religious?

steve | 8/12/2009, 8:32 pm EST

MJ had a falling out with Sony and severed all ties. Look who was the first place the family (robbers) went to to make money off of a family members death. And this family is religious? What are the 7 deadly sins? I hope the whole family makes a lot of money off someones talent cause they sure can’t make it on their own. Makes me sick. I would NEVER pay to see this sham. Have some respect. If my son died I sure wouldn’t be trying to figure out the best way to get paid.

MC | 8/12/2009, 10:22 pm EST

Iam so happy this movie is coming and the DVD.We can see MJ performance one last time. His kids will benefit, his fans will have a treasure. His lost has sadden many people.

I think AEG and Sony want to cash in on MJ. I don’t trust them. Poor Michael Jackson I feel sorry for him.

Ben | 8/14/2009, 9:47 am EST

I hope the movie is good why not make money from this he was in a estimated 500 million in debt at the time of his death, he was weird but very talented.

How sad, that this genius musician and great eccentric, has so many detractors in the world .Michael brings out the best and worst in people, but he should ultimately be remembered for the wonderful songwriter, dancer and performer. This is it , is just another knotch in his performing belt , and I hope it will show him in a kindly light and as the professional he was .Life is precious, and fleeting and it is time people stop maligning him for his personal life and start to enjoy his legacy .Good luck in the next world ….
