DJs Spin 12 Straight Hours at Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival

8/10/09, 2:33 pm EST

The Juan Maclean, Young Love and a lineup of 40 more DJs and performers kept an epically long dance party pumping Saturday at the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival.
In the event’s second year, early sets were dominated by indie and art rock, and even a touch of hip-hop. When night fell, neon spotlights heralded the arrival of Dan Keyes of Young Love, who hit the stage with electro-heavy
rock jams. Standing atop a stack of amps, Keyes ended
his set with the befitting “You Must Dance,” and the crowd meandered to the indoor stage at the Old American Can Factory, leaving a sea of abandoned T-shirts and crushed PBR cans.

After seven hours of bacchanalia had separated the
mice from the men, the Juan Maclean took the stage with vocalist
Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem. Their long, grizzled disco tracks — and liberal Theremin use — was a clear highlight, though many revelers were just there to party: “Everyone just lost their shit. Everyone
let go. Everyone was just together,” Purple Crush told Rock Daily. At 4 a.m., the last stragglers lurched out of the warehouse, some spirited, some drained, and some exhibiting that common post-rave afterglow that tends to rot by Wednesday.

this poor excuse for a “festival” wasn’t very representative of the NY electronic music scene at all. more like 40 horrible promoters-playing-DJ and miserably sceney bands.

were you at the same event i was at? juan maclean was great, same with two or three djs, the rest was terribly mediocre
