American Idol host Ryan Seacrest took to his KIIS radio show this morning to say he was “stunned” by Paula Abdul’s decision to leave the show after eight seasons, adding that despite whispers to the contrary, Abdul’s abrupt departure is not a publicity stunt. As Rock Daily reported this morning, Abdul announced that she was leaving AI via Twitter after failing to reach an agreement with the show’s producers on a new contract.

“First of all, everyone that I passed today here has asked me, ‘Is it true? Is it a publicity stunt?’ As far as I know, it’s real — at this point, she’d decided to leave,” Seacrest, who recently signed a lucrative new deal with AI though he had a year left on his contract, said on his radio show. “So the news that Paula Abdul is leaving American Idol stunned me last night. She’s a dear friend, I love her to death, and it’s really sad that it’s come to fruition. I’m just bummed and I think if you were to talk to Randy or Simon they’d say the same thing. It’s just sad. It bums us out.”

Randy Jackson spoke to Us Weekly about Abdul’s departure, saying, “I am shocked. Paula is a dear friend and will be missed.” Season Eight champ Kris Allen posted on his Twitter, “We love you. Glad I was able to be a part of your last season on the show. You showed us so much love.”

Even though Abdul’s manager David Sonenberg previously said it seemed unlikely that Abdul would return to the show — he called producers “rude and disrespectful” during the negotiations — after producers locked up a new deal with newest judge Kara DioGuardi, they shifted their focus to Abdul. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abdul was looking for a new contract in the ballpark of $20 million, far less than the three-year, $45 million contract Seacrest signed and well below the reported $100 million a year Simon Cowell will seek when his contract expires after this season.

Producers countered with a 30 percent raise in the form of a multiyear, eight-figure deal, THR reports, but given that Abdul was getting roughly in the $2-4 million range on her previous contract, the terms represented far less than Seacrest and Cowell would be receiving, and far less than what Abdul had asked for.

“When everyone else was getting such big raises she was hurt,” a source close to Abdul told People magazine. “She did want to go back to the show, of course. She’s upset they didn’t give her what she deserved.” Now that Abdul is a free agent, she’s already a hot commodity to networks looking to chip away at AI’s ratings during this rare moment of weakness. So You Think You Can Dance had previously extended an invite to Abdul, and NBC’s alternative programming executive Paul Telegdy said “Paula is an exceptional piece of talent. We have no specific plans for her but I read the breaking news and I wouldn’t rule anything out.”

Paula was a huge asset to American Idol. She was able to effectively relate to the contestants and audience. Kara is lame though she tries to be cool and she has zero TV personality. Her taking off her dress in the last show was a stupid and desperate ploy for attention. That was a really unprofessional move and a bad example for young women. What’s next for Kara? Appearing nude in Playboy? The judges should be paid equally. Simon’s contribution is to be mean, a bully, and a Jack azz. Why should that pay more? Why isn’t Randy’s salary being reported? I’m not going to watch the show anymore and nor are my friends. Simon Cowell controlls too much of it and it should be called “Sinon Says.” Simon, Ryan, and Randy all knew that there was a move to get Paula dumped and I believe that they all had a hand in it. I respect Paula even more for placing her dignity before dollars and I have more respect for her that all of the others connected with the show. Paula’s out and so will be many more viewers.

Who the hell is Kara? I watched the show with her on it and will not watch again. She does absolutely nothing for AI. Was it fact that she was a pretty face? (da) I rate her a big fat Zero, and AI you should have kept Paula. When something works don’t fix it.

“…not getting what she’s worth.” ????? What she’s WORTH!!!! 20 million to sit there, listen to cover singers and rarely make a decision…20 million! Who is “worth” 20 million…hmmm, maybe those people whom, in the line of duty, save people from fires, try to keep the peace knowing they may get shot at, try to educate young people, or attempt to cure disease while working, unheralded, in a laboratory. Yeah…I’d give them 20 million. But Paula Abdul…give me a f*#king break!

Considering that the show makes $900 millions a year. Don’t you think Paula contributes enough to the show to deserve her share of $20 mil? She is afterall the lowest paid member of the cast!

“Get Your Facts” obviously doesn’t understand the underlying point…which is not to particularly deep. Idiot

Yeah—-I feel for all the previous comments. It is AI’s loss without Paula….Paula and Simon rock as a stage pair. (not sure about in person), but anyways, A.I. sucked in Season 8 when voters went off voting way off this past season letting go of a true talent as we have found in Adam Lambert. After having attended a concert, I can tell it was the show’s loss in both cases.

Paula Abdul has heart. She is a very smart woman with great talent. A true “stand alone” success. I look forward to following her career wherever recent events guide her. What she brought to AI is the ability to critique honestly and still be a support to the contestants. You could tell she cared very much for the individual standing before her. I admire her very much for being respectful and supportive while doing her judging job. Now that takes talent.

Paula was probably the best talented of the four, willnot be watching AI any longer, My tv will tune to another channel. I cannot support Ellen Degeneres for anything. so AI I hope the ratings fall and you go down.
