Paula Abdul Announces She’s Leaving “American Idol”

The status of Paula Abdul’s American Idol contract has been a hot topic for weeks, but last night the singer put rumors to rest on her Twitter, telling fans directly that after eight seasons, she will not be returning as a judge on Idol. As Rock Daily previously reported, Abdul’s manager said Paula’s return was unlikely, noting that negotiations had lumbered along to the point that was “unnecessarily hurtful.” Still, according to Abdul, in the end it was her own decision not to return to the hit show.

“With sadness in my heart, I’ve decided not to return to [Idol]. I’ll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all being a part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon,” Abdul wrote. “What I want to say most is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me. It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month. I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all.”

(Click here to read Kris Allen, Ryan Seacrest and Randy Jackson’s reactions to Abdul’s abrupt departure.)

The producers of American Idol confirmed Abdul’s Tweets, saying in a statement that “Paula Abdul has been an important part of the American Idol family over the last eight seasons and we are saddened that she has decided not to return to the show. While Paula will not be continuing with us, she’s a tremendous talent and we wish her the best.”

Abdul had a turbulent tenure at Idol, defending herself against allegations that her loopy behavior was the result of drug abuse and accusations that she had an off-the-show relationship with contestant Corey Clark, who granted ABC’s Primetime Live an interview Idol dismissed as untrue. Even though she was erratic at times, Abdul’s sincerity for “nurturing all the new talent” was unmistakable, as she’d often tear up when a performance moved her. Contestants often cited her as their favorite judge to work with.

Just last week, Kara DioGuardi, who joined AI last season as a fourth judge, signed a new deal for Season Nine. When DioGuardi first joined AI, it was rumored that the move would eventually result in the departure of Abdul. After DioGuardi reupped, Abdul posted on her Twitter page, “Hi everyone. I’ve been quiet as we are trying to work out details of how I can return to #Idol.” Last season, the judges’ table was so cluttered with chatter, the show ran overtime several weeks in a row (notably causing Adam Lambert’s performance of “Mad World” to be cut from a live telecast).

Last year, Abdul loudly criticized AI producers after an obsessed fan named Paula Goodspeed was permitted to audition for the show, even though Abdul had had problems with Goodspeed in the past. Goodspeed ultimately died of a drug overdose while parked outside of Abdul’s home.

No word whether producers will seek a replacement judge — although Abdul herself previously said she “can’t be replaced.”

Paula so sorry to see you go but i’m sure you sitting on a mexican man talking about your humanitarianism in Burno didn’t help ur case!? – Idiot. American Idol is a joke – Hopefully this will be the last year for it!?

Eric D. | 8/5/2009, 10:07 am EST

hehe woops meant to write Bruno.

Corey Clark | 8/5/2009, 10:27 am EST

Thank you for nurturing my “talent” as I like to call it.
Kisses,
Corey

I do not have any reason to continue watching AI. The chemistry between Simon and Paula prompted me to tune in each week for the ‘Simon & Paula’ show. It became ‘lighting-in-a-bottle’ that only happens once with original cast in a series.

Who cares? Washed up has beens abound in tinseltown. It’s the 1970’s Gong Show, repackaged.

Idol like other shows in the pass, has run its course. I think the NBC america’s got talent will beat the ratings of A.I. this season. Canadian Idol didnt even go into production this year. Paula, was a personality that fit into the total package. Unless DiGiordio wears a bikini everyday, she will be truly boring.

I wont ever watch the show again because of the voting scandal. Adam should have won. Everyone knows what Arkansas did. I live there, the state pulled it off because of state pride. Idol thins they can just go on an pretend this did not happen. They will see their ratings drop like a rock in water, now even more so without Paula.

This is how it happens | 8/5/2009, 11:23 am EST

You start screwing with the formula, you ruin the show. Yes, Paula is crazy. Yes, some of her criticisms can actually result in noticible drops in viewer I.Q. But that was a big part of the show. Randy, Simon, Paula and Ryan had such a great chemistry, and as long as that wasn’t fucked with, the show would keep getting ratings. It amazes me how producers constantly feel the need to keep shows “fresh” by fucking with the chemistry. It always results in the show turning off its viewers. Ratings for AI will drop.

Maybe now we can finally get the reunion with MC Skat Cat, that we’ve ALL been waiting for!

Two steps forwards, and one step back…

Troof | 8/5/2009, 1:29 pm EST

Paula is such a beautiful pig. AI won’t be the same and it will show.

Jordan | 8/5/2009, 2:55 pm EST

aawwwwww, poor little millionaire. American Idol wasn’t paying her enough millions! boo-fucking-hoo! Good riddance to that no-talent hack. May American Idol dry up and fall off the pop-culture radar for it is trash.

frog leg | 8/5/2009, 4:22 pm EST

paula is full of herself!! “…i will miss nurturing all the new talent…” it wasnt just you woman!! you shouldve said ‘i will miss being part of nurturing new talent’. then she continues and says “…being part of a show that I helped from day one become an international phenomenon.” geez quit bragging already!!! but what really pissed me off is when she said she “cant be replaced”. who does she think she is?!!? youve been replaced!! get over it!! you werent the ruler of the show!!! go find another job or make another 1 hit wonder that all the idiots in the world can enjoy for a little while.

Art | 8/5/2009, 4:29 pm EST

We would DVR Idol and fast forward through Paula’s dribble anyway, if she could still dance she should have been on So you think you can Dance!

Skat Cat | 8/5/2009, 4:58 pm EST

The chemistry between Paula and Simon was the best reason to watch the show. Dioguardia is a boring JOKE!

Anonymous | 8/5/2009, 5:37 pm EST

American Idol… just jumped the shark!

Saddened to say that, as a fan.

It shows how stingy and ridiculous the entertainment field has gotten! I think Fox Network, and Simon are crasy. Everyone loves Paula-I’ve heard all day-ratings will go down and people will not be watching. All because of a stingy-greedy network that has made a fortune from this show- Paula-go back for the fans. Let Simon and the executives-live in their greed…it all comes back to you. This probably will be the last year-when the world is struggling and hear its all about millions and some people just need food and a job these days-it puts this show in its prospective…loosers! Simon and Paula were a good team-no reason to watch anymore!

Those male producers all gave themselves big fat raises — along with Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest — based on Adam Lambert’s Original Showtime this past season. He made that show. Do they really think they’re going to find that kind of lightning in a bottle again this coming season? And replacing Paula with Kara Dioguardi? Whoa. Big-time dumb move. Simon’s charm depended on Paula’s counter-balancing his vinegar with her syrup. Simon seems to genuinely find Kara annoying, and that’s because, well… she IS annoying. Those puffed-up male producers made a dumb, dumb mistake. And I love the way they claim that they re-upped Kara because SHE supposedly championed Adam’s talent last season. Wait a minute… wasn’t that PAULA?

I don’t even feel like watching next season, and bloody hell, I’m embarassed to admit I even bought a ticket to the AI tour show in L.A. just to see Adam. Whoopsie. My secret is out.

sky | 8/6/2009, 1:28 am EST

Paula is alot better than kara, so i think without paula, its not “american idol” anymore

MM | 8/6/2009, 1:59 am EST

Paula’s antics wrung my last nerve, so I am happy to see her go. She always reminded me of a cheerleader with pom poms anyway! What singers need is the truth, which Simon gives.

Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.

Australian idol judges just lost a judge as well. Except he was the simon equivalent. It was a shame they didnt loose the paula equivalent who is another garbage one hit wonder – marcia hines. She calls all the white girls “sweetie” and the black girls “girlfiend”. She can also make you stupider by listening to her comments

lewie huhtewie,that's who! | 8/6/2009, 9:23 am EST

tricia | 8/8/2009, 5:13 pm EST

OUCH!!!! that was Paula hitting the glass ceiling.

Ariel | 8/11/2009, 2:04 am EST

Paula deserves as much a raise as the rest of the guys. Smells like corporate spirit.

Tammi D | 8/12/2009, 7:13 pm EST

I don’t blame Paula for leaving, woman have long been underpaid compared to men’s slaries and this just confirms it. While the men on the show were making multi- millions of dollars, Paula was getting screwed. I am a loyal watcher of Idol, but I doubt I’ll want to turn in to a show that discriminates this BLANTENTLY. You go girl!

Ellie | 8/13/2009, 2:27 am EST
