“Weird Al” Parodies The White Stripes, Charles Nelson Reilly

8/4/09, 3:52 pm EST

The last time we heard from “Weird Al” Yankovic, he was recalling his relationship with Michael Jackson, the man responsible for jump-starting his career, for this Website. Now the suddenly prolific Yankovic has popped up on JibJab today to premiere his new video for “CNR,” a tribute to Match Game panelist and actor Charles Nelson Reilly. “CNR” finds “Weird Al” playing the role of both Jack and Meg White, with Yankovic donning Jack’s trademark hat and stringy black hair and using the Stripes’ classic red-white-and-black motif.

Just as Weird Al is indebted to the White Stripes’ “Icky Thump” for the sound of the song, the lyrics borrow just as heavily from those Chuck Norris Facts — for example: “Chuck Norris has counted to infinity. Twice.” — except with Charles Nelson Reilly cast as a superhuman that can turn coal into diamonds and figure out cold fusion. Reilly passed away after a bout with pneumonia in 2007, thus depriving him the opportunity of hearing Yankovic tell tales about how “CNR” makes love to a manatee in front of school children at the aquarium and swallows Volkswagens whole.

The White Stripes join Nirvana, Michael Jackson, T.I., Dire Straits and countless more as recipients of “Weird Al” parodies. Prior to his original “Skipper Dan” video, Yankovic mocked the Doors’ sound, style and Jim Morrison’s meandering poetry with his “Craigslist” video. Both the “CNR” song and video is available now on all digital music outlets. Additionally, JibJab, who animated the clip, are offering members of their website to somehow plaster their own face onto one of the people who are terrorized by Reilly in the video.

Once upon a time, Weird Al parodies were ‘timely’…

now, they come out about five years too late!

Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground has a lot of influence too.

Jon Schwartz (Bermuda) is actually the one who’s playing as Meg White, not Al.

Next up for Weird Al….a Vines parody in tribute to Andy Griffith. “I’m goin to Mayberry/I’m goin to Mayberry/I’m goin to Mayberry/Ron Howard is my son”.

I like how “Anonymous” decided to be, well, “anonymous.” How can a style parody be five years too late? It’s not like the White Stripes aren’t relevant (sorta) anymore. Charles Nelson Reilly, uh… well what did you want, a song about food? Sheesh, can’t please everyone I guess.

I don’t exactly “get” the complaint that Al isn’t parodying timely music… does this music really have such a short shelf life that it’s not enjoyable to listen to five years later?

Well like most of us, al has a real life. he may have gotten these idea’a a few years back and still wanted to do the songs anyway. Yes we are used to him doing timely music, but this could be stuff he wanted to do for awhile, this is an EP. so who knows for 2010 ,He may make a CD with timely work on it? (Just a side Note, Chuck Norris Facts are still hot and are being used right now on twitter, with wrestler chris jericho at the moment)

Wow, this one breaks so many Weird Al conventions. It has: Murder, mayhem, cannibalism (there was a person in that Volks!), pooping (excreting), a nipple (in horrifying animated close-up!), cruelty to animals (kicking moose, cat fired from cannon, cow halved, snake ironing, etc.), cruelty to women (toss’d drummer), and BESTI-AL-ITY! (In front of children even!) Awesome!!

Well, the White Stripes are more “timely” than The Doors. :P

But seriously, they both have distinct musical styles, and that’s what makes them great for style parodies. This is not a parody of a specific song. For a band to develop a specific recognizable style, they need to be around for a while. I daresay 5 years ago would have been too EARLY for a White Stripes style parody…..

His last actual parody was Whatever It Takes, which came out while that song was on the charts. I think that counts as timely.

His last actual parody was Whatever You Like, which came out while that song was on the charts. I think that counts as timely.

Weird Al didn’t Play Meg in the video Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz did.

This song was heavily influenced by The Denial Twist and Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground. I mean, the intro from Dead Leaves (The high-pitched guitar note) is in the song. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they didn’t play that note and they just took it from Dead Leaves.

Also, I don’t really see how Icky Thump influenced this song. Most of the crazy notes were Dead Leaves-sounding, not Icky Thump-sounding. I didn’t really hear all that much of Icky Thump at all. :-\

All in all, good song and funny video. I’m glad Weird Al likes The White Stripes (don’t believe me? He also used Fell in Love With a Girl in Angry White Boy Polka off of Poodle Hat. That proof enough?). :)
