Woodstock Promoter Lang Drops Plans for 40th Anniversary Concert

Woodstock promoter Michael Lang has dropped plans for a 40th anniversary concert. Asked why he abandoned the pursuit for a third anniversary concert celebrating the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, Lang simply told Rolling Stone, “Money. No sponsors.”

Lang, one of the four partners to stage Woodstock in 1969, had wanted to hold a free concert in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park to coincide with the anniversary in mid-August. Those plans were postponed after he failed to find sponsors to cover the $8-$10 million cost. He then turned his attention to the end of September and had hoped to hold the concert in conjunction with Climate Week, which is set for September 20-26th and is part of the international Seal the Deal! Campaign. This effort, according to a United Nations Website, is pushing governments scheduled to meet at COP 15, in Copenhagen this December, to agree on a sustainable climate change pact and promote an international green economy. Lang had wanted to make any Woodstock anniversary concert as green as possible.

“It would have been a big boost for the issue,” he said of the concert.

Lang, however, remains busy with Woodstock-related projects. On August 8th, he will join Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee and screenwriter/producer James Schamus in Woodstock, New York, for an advance screening of the comedy Taking Woodstock, which hits theaters August 28th. The film, directed by Lee, with screenplay by Schamus, is based on a book written by Elliot Tiber, who along with his parents ran a motel in Bethel during the Woodstock festival.

On Friday, August 14th, VH1 will air Woodstock: Now & Then, a documentary directed by Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple that Lang executive produced. The History Channel will show Woodstock: Now & Then on August 17th.

And on August 23rd at Belleayre Mountain, just west of Woodstock, Lang will co-present Kidstock, with a “Tribute to Woodstock” by young musicians from Paul Green’s School of Rock, the inspiration for the Jack Black movie.

No one is ever going to give anybody associated with Woodstock ‘99 millions to run a concert again, certainly not merely 10 years later. That was such a disaster of epic proportions, even if it was guaranteed to turn a huge profit they still would not take the risk. They were so clearly liable for the disaster they don’t deserve a second chance.

Sergei | 8/3/2009, 11:16 am EST

This is a total bummer no woodstock!I was to young to go to woodstock in 69,94,99 i was finally able toin 09 but its canceled. why, why? All i wanted was to rock out.

WonderBread | 8/3/2009, 11:19 am EST

if Woodstock ‘04 HAD gone forward, I think it would have featured more peace oriented bands than, say… Limp Bizkit.

I think a Woodstock 2009 would more resemble Bonnaroo or Coachella.

Perhaps they’ll try again in 10 years, for the 50th.

WonderBread | 8/3/2009, 11:24 am EST

i meant ‘09, not ‘04… and why the hell does my name say WonderBread… i did NOT type that in!

Fred | 8/3/2009, 11:56 am EST

End of an era.

Scotty C | 8/3/2009, 12:23 pm EST

maybe the rapes, fires and vandalism in ‘99 have something to do with the lack of sponsors?

thedetoxg | 8/3/2009, 12:38 pm EST

i dont think they will have a real woodstock again, like 69,94,99. with 99 it really showed the new generation of people and society with the riots because of the backlash of the commercialization of the show, the music was very, very intense with the line up they had limp bizkit, rage against the machine, metallica, korn.the energy build up so much that some thing like the flaming riot that occured changed the “woodstock” theme

Lame Buscuit | 8/3/2009, 12:58 pm EST

I was at WS 94 and 99, 94 was so much better. Everything about it was better. 99 they just ripped us off. $4 for a bottle of warm water. $7 for a slice of pizza. Hard-rap bands that attracted a bunch of jugheads. Those bastards ruined it. And ‘F you Fred Durst, you almost killed rock and roll. Please go away again.

Dean Wien | 8/3/2009, 12:59 pm EST

On Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 5:00PM there will be a Woodstock 40th Anniversary on the exact property of the original Woodstock in Bethel, New York. The artists that will be performing are Levon Helm, Jefferson Starship, Mountain, Canned Heat, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Country Joe & The Fish and special guests. There will also be special exhibits, and people selling items, and face painting. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. I guess this will have to be the official concert for Woodstock’s 40th Anniversary.

Scotty C | 8/3/2009, 1:01 pm EST

yeah, in ‘99 I was paying about 420 for a small bag of ice by the last day? It was such a rip off.

Drain Bamage | 8/3/2009, 7:05 pm EST

Last time I checked, woodstock lost all cred the second they put limp bizkit on the bill. This news is hardly disappointing.

@ Kitchy

Right on man, keep fighting the good fight. And keep pretending it wasn’t due to the republicans incompetence that these so called “liberals” were allowed to take control.

biker dave | 8/3/2009, 7:16 pm EST

We need sponcers why can,t some of these rich bands help

Nick | 8/3/2009, 9:27 pm EST

Uh, woodstock-schmoodstock. that wasn’t the only time a large gathering happened like that. Check out BONNAROO, it happens ever year, they get almost 100,000 people. Also 10KLF, Coachella, etc. They’re all over, all of the time.

George | 8/3/2009, 9:37 pm EST

Mikey | 8/3/2009, 10:25 pm EST

It wasn’t only the music that was to blame for the riots. The WS99 promoters had a very poor security set up, 1,500 barely trained security guards to patrol over 200,000 people. Lots used the security job as a ruse to see the event free and immediately abandoned their job to check out the concerts.

When the rioting happened, police took so long to show up because they were being assured security was handling the rioters. Actually recorded transmissions from the security had their supervisors advising them to just let the rioters riot because “we’re not getting paid enough.”

And this was when 200,000 people were paying them $150 to attend. I cannot imagine how horrible they’d have done the event for free!

alancampbell | 8/3/2009, 11:13 pm EST

The majority of people were interested in the new bands, anyway. They just want a who’s who of rock. -Someone who knows.

Mark | 8/4/2009, 12:26 am EST

I guarantee that there were just as many rapes and assaults at the original woodstock as woodstock 99, they just werent reported

Dirty Hippie | 8/4/2009, 1:46 am EST

Since the anniversary concert isn’t happening, can we at least have a moment of silence in honor of me taking a dump in the woods and wiping my ass with a sock 40 years ago?

Cheesecrop | 8/4/2009, 6:16 am EST

Let it go… Let younger generations have their own thing, and just put Woodstock behind us. I wasn’t there in 69, but from what I’ve seen it looked alright. I do remember 94, and it was pretty cool. 99 appears to have been a total screw-up. Simply put, every decade should have something new for young people, not the recycled memories of an older generation. I hope young people today like Bonnarroo & Coachella the way I used to think Lollapalooza was great 15 yrs ago.

BohemianConspiracy | 8/4/2009, 8:29 am EST

but Nick… without Woodstock maybe that Coachella and a lot of big festivals will be just impossible…a sci-fi kind of thing…
Woodstock and his massive success (way before with the movie success) has opened the door for a lot of others events… woodstock …miami festival ‘68 and Monterey ‘67 were ‘avant-garde’…it was new to organize it …it was like walkin’ for nowhere land…
There’s 2 keys for an excellent new woodstock…this green respectfull vision of the event (pots too) not too much advertising…back to simplicity… and… the right bands…stylistically somewhere between the old woodstock and actual young rockers (with a vintage culture) and not heavy bands as this shit of 99 …exept heavy rock bands with some 60s 70s influences…but places for smartpop …goodfolk etc…and some fusion and psychedelic bands… and the fest will be great¨!!! the best since 69…honestly i will be the right musical adviser for Michael Lang !

Stan | 8/4/2009, 8:57 am EST

I liked then, then, and I like now, now, But I’m not that keen on then, now. Americans love nostalgia, and hate history. Very odd.

me | 8/4/2009, 10:17 am EST

I guarantee Mark is a complete idiot.

backstagepass | 8/4/2009, 1:46 pm EST

someone mentioned earlier, why don’t the bands pay ?
that sounds like the sort of sponsor mike lang should be looking for.
at 100 bucks a pop for concerts nowadays, it makes the most sense.
let them take the risk for once.
the prime candidate is U2.
they have made millions of dollars on unsuspecting concert goers for years,
hey bondo, how’s about givin sumpin
back to the homies who got you there ?

therealtruth | 8/4/2009, 3:51 pm EST

Hey All: read ‘Young Men with Unlimited Capital’ for the real woodstock 69 story. I ‘worked’ volunteered at both 69 and 94.

WeedStock | 8/4/2009, 4:39 pm EST

Uh, the reason this fest won’t work is because they’re trying to bring back shit bands like Country Joe and Jefferson Starship. What they should do is get the same lineup back from ‘99 (aka good bands): Metallica, Bizkit, Chili Peppies, add a couple of good new acts: Linkin Park, Daughtry, Nickelback, and maybe a Creed reunion show (would be fucking awesome!!!!). And just make your money on merchandise and food sales (i.e., premium prices for water and food), and maybe even charge people to shower or use the toilet. It’ll be a big money maker and will totally attract a bunch of new fans (with money) instead of poor broke hippies who still listen to Bob Dylan.

Stephanie | 8/4/2009, 5:22 pm EST

I really hope ‘WeedStock’ was being ironic…

Christopher | 8/4/2009, 5:48 pm EST

WOW. Weedstock not only has horrible taste in music, but…No that was my only point. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE TASTE.

fuckweedstock | 8/4/2009, 6:15 pm EST

weedstock are you fucking retarded or something woodstock99 shouldn’t even be called woodstock its supposed to be about peace love and music not hurt each other and burn shit down why the fuck would you ever want creed or nickelback there that makes me wanna puke. woodstock99 was a fuckin joke, with the way the world is today you can’t have another woodstock it would be almost unaffordable for everyone people are too money hungry these days and it would be the same outcome with people rioting because prices for everything are so high

more like failstock | 8/4/2009, 6:33 pm EST

Good riddance. Woodstock ‘99 was one of the markers of the end of popular & meaningful music. The nu-metal and faux rap/rock that took place in ‘99 would be replaced by the more nu-metal, mallcore, and shitty irrelevant corporate bands like metallica.

Tastytune | 8/4/2009, 7:53 pm EST

Weedstock really does have terrible taste. There are good bands in this day and age it’s just the Weedstock doesn’t listen to them. I would actually pay NOT to have to go to a concert with his dream line up.

Imp | 8/4/2009, 8:41 pm EST

Shit bands? Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park and Creed suck. Throw Korn’s sorry ass in there while you’re at it.

Insane 2 The Membrane | 8/5/2009, 8:14 am EST

Hey Michael Lang, get real, your Woodstock gig is over dude, -get a real job, you fucked up the original gig, but it turned out to be a cultural phenom.- that can never happen again.
Go write a column for Rolling Stone, and call it a day- they are also hiring at Walmart, so go fill out an application, and hope for the best, we have all had enough of you.
If there were to ever be another Woodstock type event to happen, we would need a real “get it done guy” like Donald Trump to step in, now get lost!

Lenny | 8/5/2009, 12:44 pm EST

It was called off because no one cares hippies.

Herb | 8/5/2009, 1:34 pm EST

In an age of Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, All Points West, Coachella and all the other festivals, there is no point in putting a Woodstock show, especially in Brooklyn.

Nicola from Italy | 8/5/2009, 2:47 pm EST

We had enough of you Mr.Lang… now get a real job and get outta the way

ACFinLA | 8/5/2009, 9:31 pm EST

How about doing the show on the Cal Berkeley campus? Hippies are alive an well there.

Peace Brother jerome watkins | 8/5/2009, 9:37 pm EST

Yoooo . .Lang, hang it up Brother, and stop living off of something that happened 40 years ago, you are not relevent. Money is tight, and nobody is going to back you up on any Mega Concert deal. You fucked up the first one, but by luck, it turned out OK, as a defining moment in our culture. Your new “culture” should be at Walmart or Target, as a Salesman, or Cashier, so go get an application, while they are still hiring dude!
from “Brutha J”, that’s who, now get the hell out of here!

therealtruth | 8/5/2009, 10:31 pm EST

ML successfully ‘protected’ his stuff and will never have to really burn energy as he is still living off the good will which attended 1969, Ask any of the original investors JW and Nicola have it right. Many checks are only wallpaper from ML in 69.

Joe | 8/5/2009, 10:52 pm EST

All you mother fuckers who talk shit about woodstock. If you don’t like if it were to happen then don’t Fucken Go!!
Yea I’m an older guy and I like the days back then and yeah I would love to see a 40th.
So I’ll tell you what those woh don’t like GO FUCK YOURSELVES.
To all you people that were there and now you talk shit you are a bunch full of shit scumbags.
You all talk shit back then anti establishment and so on and now you have become the same as the them. The ones you were so ctitical about then.YUPPIES.
I still believe in what I did back then and no I wasn’t a hippie but I still believe in now what i believed in than.
I hope there would be a 40 and Fuck You all who think not.

Signed a real Mother Fucker. 1%er all the way

Mr. Kurtz | 8/6/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Weedstock – you are an out of touch moron.do you actually listen to those bands you mentioned (Daughtry, seriously?) The music from the original woodstock represented a moment in time reflective of what was happening in real life – not what z100 kids were requesting on the air.

Insane 2 the Membrane – Donald Trump? Seriously? The guy is a slimy, self promoting pompous ass – not to mention broke again! Get real and maybe pick up a newspaper once in a while and turn off Access Hollywood for a change

skyhigh | 8/6/2009, 6:31 pm EST

hey freaks? woodstock’s the best!

Yawn | 8/7/2009, 11:22 am EST

All this sounds like the standard Woodstock bashing from people who missed out. So what, get over it. It was a great event, but if you missed it, just move on and find something of your own. It’s not a zero sum game. No need to slag other people to bring meaning into your own life.

Linnea | 8/7/2009, 3:26 pm EST

Too bad there wont be a 40th Anniversary Concert. I was there in 1999, and the experience was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!

Linnea | 8/7/2009, 3:37 pm EST

And for all the people that werent there in 1999, lets get something straight.
The fires and burning happened during the last few hours of the weekend long concert when red hot chili peppers were performing. Out of the 500 hundred thousand people that went, it was only a HAND FULL of immature teenage boys that did the deed. 99% of the concert goers were not involved.
I hope that the 1999 concert is rememebered the way I rememeber it….as the best weekend of my life!! And not for what the media made it out to be….fires all around and total anarchy.

Carl Morin | 8/8/2009, 3:37 pm EST

There will never be a show anywhere like Woodstock 1969, I was there !!

dave | 8/8/2009, 7:55 pm EST

if you were not there in ‘69 – you will never understand…..

The Glotz | 8/9/2009, 2:36 am EST

There wouldn’t BE any outdoor music festivals with out Woodstock back in 69. Truly, the music that would play there would utterly suck anyways. What’s the point? The message? There is none. Just a sea of Gen Y douchebags who THINK they know what cool is. PS- There IS no such thing as a Punk-Rock Republican… Sorry- you fucks need to find a church bake-sale to hump each other in… Oh yeah.. Rot in hell.

Ed | 8/10/2009, 12:54 am EST

Woodstock is best remembered in the SF Bay Area where the whole idea started. I’m going to Golden Gate Park for Woodstock West, just as I did for the Summer of Love Concerts. Peace, Love and Music, and only Peace, Love and Music. Trying to recreate Woodstock with those who never shared the values for huge profit is a waste of time.

rob | 8/10/2009, 3:38 pm EST

40 years ago Woodstock was like nothing else the world had or would ever have seen.some aspects negative–most aspects had a positively profound impact culturally, and spirtually and socially-that cannot be argued.

Peace

Sledziu | 8/10/2009, 6:02 pm EST

in Poland we have had Woodstock every year since 1994;) I invite you to come and drift away there http://www.en.wosp.org.pl/woodstock/

acent2112/Austin Centolella | 8/11/2009, 11:26 am EST

The End? Woodstock is not in America that is for sure. The Myth is no longer alive. We are all striving to survive in the world these days. It isn’t cool to attack each other over music.

I went to ‘94 & ‘99. I know the idea was sound but the money killed the Love. There is still MUCH LOVE IN THE WORLD AND IN THE MUSIC. I KNOW I SAW AND REMEMBER THE WORLD IS IN TUNE JUST NOT IN PROFIT SHARING. ITS ABOUT LOVE AND MUSIC. GET HIGH ON LIFE NOW WOODSTOCK 40. STOP HATING AND GET ON WITH IT.

I KNOW IT IS ABOUT BEING ALIVE AND CELEBRATION WHILE WE CAN STILL JOIN THE PARTY

I drum and play guitar. PEACE

LimpNumNutz | 8/12/2009, 7:10 am EST

No, Woodstock will NEVER be recreated. The ’spirit’ lives, but not the physical. Any..and I mean ANY recreations have and will end in disaster like most of the other recreations. Today, its all about the money.

Even in SF, (Woodstock West? WTF, that was an East Coast idea and festival you idiots! NOT San Fran flippin cisco!)Even in SF its advertised as FREE. But as us schoolkids learned: “THERE IS NO ‘FREE’” Be prepared to spend 10 bucks on beverages, and 15 bucks for a slice of pizza (-no magic mushrooms btw!) and a buck to take a crap (with no toilet paper). Its not all about the music anymore or the spirit. Do yourself a favor. If you want to celebrate the 40th, watch the new movie “Taking Woodstock” with your friends and family. Light one up, have a beer or five and strike up the bbq. (make your own mud-pit)Plus, you dont have to worry about a dui.
Peace, from an ole hippy

Janie | 8/12/2009, 10:28 pm EST

I have not heard anything about the original movie coming to theaters for the 40th anniversary. that would be great! Not only would “old timers” get to listen to music they really like and re-live, if only for the length of the movie, a time they were part of, but the youth of today would get the experience to see what it was like. Plus there has never been a movie with better music.

CHUCK NORRIS | 8/13/2009, 9:49 pm EST

Well that definitely that it canceled sucks because I was planning on going. But fuck it, let’s just get ready for something new and not worry about trying to replicate anything.

Subdud | 8/16/2009, 11:30 am EST

I don’t have to wonder why the 40th anniversary didn’t happen. I just read the comments here that are representative of the sea change of attitude and disposition separating this generation from Woodstock. It’s all about ego these days brought on by the modern sub-culture of violence and hero worship of gang culture. Rock on.

Andrew Odom | 8/16/2009, 10:11 pm EST

It’s over, baby boomers.

I think Bobby Darin and Elvis Presley had it any day far beyond Country Joe or Jefferson Airplane…

iristarr | 8/17/2009, 2:54 am EST

Hippies are alive and well in Northern California. There is a population of dropped out kids wandering the roads, looking for their truth (or the next joint, or the next handout.) Dissenchanted youth, talking the old revolution talk, revering Lennon.

Melly | 8/17/2009, 11:25 pm EST

People are not as kind and loving as they were 40 years ago. There will never be another true woodstock. Everything revolves around money now and there are not many non violent people who gather like back in tne day sad but true. Not many live by the peace love and happiness rule these days.

reading this some of you talk about the youth of this generation and that the woodstock spirit is dead, i am one of the youth you speak of and you are mostly correct. but i still wish i could have been lucky enough to be there in 1969 those of you that were are extremly lucky and i plan on going to “taking woodstock” cant wait. hopefully there will be a concert 10 years from now for the 50th.

jamie | 8/19/2009, 8:45 am EST

Woodstock is still alive. Check out Hempstock and Harvest Fest in Maine. Happening in Harmony, Maine this year ansd every year. I went to Woodstock 40….nice but just a moderne concert. Hempfest is truely another celebration to go to and camp out for many daze… LOL

i want a woodstock | 8/29/2009, 5:31 am EST

I think that if they can just get some less hardcore bands to play, not go so fucking cheap on security, (and not let anybody in unless they’re stoned off there ass)then the violence level of a Wodstock ‘09 would be low enough to maintain

As for the money issue, get some bands to pitch in. It’s the least they can do considering they would’nt be where they are now if it were’nt for us buying they’r fucking records.

If they wanted to do it, they could find a way.

I was only 16 during Woodstock 69 and couldn’t make the concert. The music promoters, muscians and the kids of 2009 are of a different era. (sad but true) and Woodstock 69 was a awesome moment in time that will never be repeated. Seems that the kids of today are so hung up in who’s making the most money and violence. Not interested in spreading peace and love like we did in 69 even if it was only for 3 days.
