Mariah Carey’s “Memoirs” to Include Mini-Magazine and Advertisements

It has come to this: Island Def Jam revealed that Mariah Carey’s new album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel will feature a 34-page booklet devoted to the diva and produced by Elle magazine, Brand Week reports. It will be stocked with articles like “VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life” and ads for Elizabeth Arden and the Bahamas Board of Tourism, among others.

The integration of advertisements is the latest move by record companies to increase revenues as album sales continue to plummet. If the experiment succeeds, ad-packed booklets for Rihanna, Kanye West and Bon Jovi might be next.

“The idea was really simple thinking: ‘We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us,’ ” Island Def Jam head Antonio “L.A.” Reid said of the promotional deal. “My artists have substantial circulation — when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that’s a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren’t as successful as those records.” The booklet will also appear in issues of Elle that coincide with the September 15th release of Carey’s album and plans are underway to produce a digitized version of the booklet for the digital release.

Back in January 2008, Rock Daily wrote that then-EMI honcho Guy Hands flirted with the idea of corporate branding an artist, saying “Football [Soccer] teams have very distinct corporate sponsorship. Why shouldn’t some of the leading bands have the same sort of relationships?”

Hey record companies, here’s a good idea: Alienate music lovers even more!! “L.A.” Reid is a DICK!

Anonymous | 8/3/2009, 2:38 pm EST

Anyone who is a music lover, does not listen to Mariah Carey.

Jere | 8/3/2009, 2:42 pm EST

As long as it doesn’t drive the price up, then it’s a good move (and if anything, why didn’t anyone think to do this years ago in order to drive prices down?). Carey isn’t exactly an artist coming out of some principled position, so why shouldn’t her music get packaged with ads? Plus, you don’t have to look at the magazine anyway. Just buy the album and toss the mag if you don’t want to read it.

18 and life to go | 8/3/2009, 2:53 pm EST

They still don’t get it, do they? The reason nobody buys records anymore is because THEY SUCK! Including mini-magazines with the record won’t turn things around! I don’t care if you include a free Ferrari with your album, I won’t buy if I think it’s crap! Advertising is NOT the problem, there’s plenty of it to go around these days, the problem is that record labels are pushing sub-par artists making sub-par music on us. They REFUSE to accept that want something different, something REAL. All they care about is the young hot thing who will appeal to tweens and sell a million records right off the bat. Nevermind that in the long-run it’s a bad business decision because after a mere few years people will get tired of the novelty pop star and have already moved to something else. Whereas if they signed a genuinely talented artist who can make their own music, it’s much better because they build up a fanbase slowly, but eventually their work will be considered timeless and they will always sell records even long after they’re dead. But no, record execs must see bank accounts fill up NOW. Screw everyone else. They never think long-term, everything has to be NOW to them.

“I don’t care if you include a free Ferrari with your album, I won’t buy if I think it’s crap!”

If that’s true, you sir, are dumb.

Jere | 8/3/2009, 3:45 pm EST

You mean if the album is crap, or if the Ferrari is crap? Cuz I wouldn’t buy an album packaged with a crap car, either.

Leoh87 | 8/3/2009, 4:23 pm EST

If this thing is for real I won’t buy this album or another with such thing on it. I’m a Marketing student and yes, We try to figure out new ways to put the products in your eyes and mind but this is cheap advertising, I call this “Vulgar”, personally I even dislike when the last page booklet has something to do with clothing line like Beyoncé’s House of Dereon in B’day, or relative with the artist catalogue like Bitney’s and others… If the Labels’ are trying to increase ernings this is NOT the best option. I totally repel the idea, We’re not stupid, We’re getting nothing out the proposal. Booklets are for the art, fotography, lyrics, notes, even thanks if you like but Not for ADVERTISING and don’t tell me it’s about heading to the future you’re just being lazy, /MUSIC) is not Facebook telling Coca Cola COMPANY i like to drink it!

O.M.G what music has come to these days…It’s no longer about heart-felt good music being made anymore…it’s ALL about the dosh…real sad. Sorry but Mariah’s sales are going to plummet even further because what does this indicate? Her new album SUCKS and she has disgracefully but money before her so called passion of singing for the people. I am no longer an MC fan, she was amazing but now I am very embarrased for her:(

Jazlene | 8/3/2009, 5:20 pm EST

One word: GLITTER.

Anonymous | 8/3/2009, 6:23 pm EST

If they really need the money, they should tattoo some corporate sponsors’ logos on her breasts.

Because there’s a lot of eyeballs glued to those as well.

Rachel | 8/3/2009, 7:02 pm EST

Maybe if Island Def Jam just used ad-space on their WEBSITES?? or DIGITAL stores? That is obviously the next step, for the age that lives on the internet.

BoBo Rattan | 8/3/2009, 9:12 pm EST

I would prefer that it came with earplugs so I wouldn’t have to listen to Butterfly Dogwhistle.

M&M | 8/4/2009, 1:41 am EST

OMG!!!!! Pathetic!

bizarro | 8/4/2009, 11:05 am EST

ugh why is this woman still around??? her music is forgettable, hence why is she now putting out another album a year after her last album… her videos suck, they all show different sides of mariah’s slutty side. yawn. she doesnt tour cause she sucks live and cant even sing the way she used to. really she just blows chunks and this move to have a mini mariah magazine in her album is more grandstanding on her pathetic part… im shocked the whore doesnt have a statue of herself…

Ms. Finger Puppet | 8/4/2009, 11:30 am EST

With all due respect- M. Carey is doing the world a service by illuminating the fact that the human voice and a good rack can sell a lot of albums ….. that being said – SOMEBODY should be holding those eyeballs dontcah think – we all a need a pantomime to know what’s REAL in this world.
Obviously it’s still exploiting people for HUGE sums of money NOW isn’t it?

GO Buuuterflies- I know at least one person who thinks an “old” broad like Mariah Carey gives the “young” wannabes a run for their money…
Here’s to tha peace sign with the index (finger) down.

Mariah sings and makes her own music. just cuz she doesnt do what everyone says she should is what a true artist does…..she cant help it if shes mainstream as she is…most artists would kill for sales that are considered flops for her….people need to get off her back…look in the mirror and judge themselves…i hope i look like that when im forty..shoot!

Quibbon | 8/4/2009, 8:28 pm EST

worthless drivel…

Anonymous | 8/5/2009, 12:52 pm EST

a new low for the industry. thanks for thinking of the dollar first and always. as a total music lover, buyer, and geek, stuff like this almost shamefully make me wish for the industry’s demise.

bobby | 8/5/2009, 4:53 pm EST

first of all rachel…have you been sleeping for years. mariah’s emancapation of Mimi was the top selling album of 2005, that was just 3 years. it sold over 10 million albums worldwide.name me one other person that has been around for over 20 years still selling 10million albums worldwide….thats right NOBODY. i not the biggest Mariah fan, but damn give the girl props for doing what all my favorite artist have not been able to do, and that’s stick around. HATERS are everywhere man…

Otto | 8/6/2009, 8:56 am EST

Whitney1 | 8/28/2009, 3:41 am EST

IDIOT HATER | 9/14/2009, 9:02 pm EST

I AM A MUSIC LOVER, MUSIC IS MY LIFE. I LOVE MASSIVE ATTACK, TORI AMOS, PRODIGY, ADELE, ARMIN VAN BUUREN, BJORK, ROYKSOPP, GOLDFRAPP, AND I ADORE MARIAH CAREY, HAVE DONE SO FOR 20 YEARS. SO ,MR ANONYMOUS, YOU ARE QUITE DAFT INDEED.

rob | 9/22/2009, 5:29 pm EST

mariah rocks you all suck

Arsento | 10/12/2009, 8:54 pm EST

Are you a professional journalist? You write very well.

Chikapea | 10/31/2009, 7:33 am EST

I managed to buy the digital album off Amazon for $4.99 the day it was released. I didn’t get any of the advertisments! So it wasn’t a dissapointment for the $. I don’t know why record lables would bother when they say that the “physical” cd’s are on the way out.

torigirl | 11/2/2009, 3:07 pm EST

hey idiothater you are quite the bragger, lots of people are tori fans, your not special, and enough people like mariah carey too, including me, but you are just a bragger and think you are special to these musicians well your not you are a pimple on an elephant, and tori will never love you like she loves her nieces and nephews, and you are not special for being a person who loves her period. you are an idiot!

torigirl | 11/2/2009, 3:10 pm EST

idiothater you are an idiot, so you must hate yourself too, and also mariah carey doesn’t love you like she loves her family either. music is your life cause you have no life. if you think being into tori amos makes you special, it doesn’t. as you can see from my handle I am also very into tori, and no you definitely are not a bigger fan than me either, no matter how much you are with tori amos period.

torigirl | 11/2/2009, 3:14 pm EST

and as for you people with the negative comments for mariah, if you have nothing nice to say about her leave her alone. I am a huge fan of mariah carey and she is still great, and beautiful as well. and for you idiot hater, don’t think your a bigger mariah fan than me either cause your not. the only reason music is your life is cause you have nothing else, and you want to be noticed by all the musicians you are into cause you think because you gave up your life for them they will love and respect you more.

AdrianoEurope | 11/16/2009, 9:19 pm EST

Mariah Carey has an amazing new record and she finally has very good r&b songs ans sounds better. She can also sing live again! The smell of the success!Love you Mimi so much and will always be your fan, forever with you, your voice is my light!

Angela308 | 11/17/2009, 11:18 am EST

Mariah Carey is an extremely talented artist with great structure and a skill to write and produce her own songs. This CD is amazing, one of my favorites. I congratulate her on her continued success, and thought the mini magazine was a clever and cute idea. Something orginal, as Mariah Carey has always been.
