Coldplay Soar at All Points West With Anthems, Beastie Boys Cover

It’s terribly fashionable to criticize Coldplay but unless trenchfoot is the latest hipster accessory, there wasn’t anyone being fashionable on the third day of All Points West. With the rain and sludge double-whammy demoralizing the thousands of fans in Liberty State Park, the sound of the London-four piece spinning out a decade’s worth of stadium anthems and a few other party favors was just the unpretentious tonic that Sunday night needed.

(Check out the best of All Points West, in photos.)

Dressed in their now familiar (but no-less conspicuous) French revolutionary clobber and backlit to within an inch of their lives, Chris Martin and Co. reached high gear almost instantly, dispatching “Clocks,” “In My Place” and “Yellow” before they’d even said a proper hello. “As four British people who grew up in the mud and the rain, we salute you for coming out to what can only be described as a mud Jacuzzi,” gushed Chris Martin before spinning and spiraling around the stage during “42″ like a little boy who’s just discovered how fun it is to make yourself dizzy.

(Read our report on the rest of All Points West’s third day, featuring Echo and the Bunnymen and the Black Keys, here.)

Although the band is nearing the end of a touring cycle that has been in motion since last year’s Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends, they attacked the set with all the verve and energy of a band who’ve just come out of hibernation rather than beginning to go back into it. It’s a prowess that made the woozy psychedelic sway of “Strawberry Swing” sound more like a mesmerizing tribal stomp, transformed “God Put A Smile On Your Face” into a synthetic, New Order-esque dance number and even saw them throwing in an All Points West-related surprise in the shape of another Beastie Boys shout out.

But while Jay-Z damn near blew up the main stage by tearing through “No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn” in honor of the absent hip-hoppers as his opener on Friday night, Martin paid his own homage by cantering through a priceless piano-ballad version of “Fight For Your Right (To Party),” bringing out belly laughs as well as sing-alongs from the crowd. Corny as hell for sure, but there’s not a soul on site who could have questioned the sincerity of Martin’s tribute. That charming combination of the silly and the profound was repeated during an brief acoustic set (played from a mini-stage in the center of the crowd) when all four members added to the continual stream of Jacko-tributes by putting their spin on “Billie Jean” — complete with some admirably precise Martin falsettos.

Yet, even after such an impressive set, the singer’s self-effacing streak was no less prominent. “You probably won’t see us again for a while… which is probably good news for some of you,” was his preamble before the band wound down with “The Scientist.” On balance, the prospect of spending some time away from Coldplay is no where near as exciting as taking a break from All Points West. It’ll take a year off just to scrape the mud off.

“Life In Technicolor”
“Violet hill”
“Clocks”

I was seriously unexcited for this show, but I have to say, I was blown away by coldplay from start to finish… the remix of god put a smile upon your face was pretty freaking cool…

anyone know what songs were playing before they even went on. Was that mozart? What were the other two? Got me pumped!

barefootapw | 8/3/2009, 12:43 pm EST

It was blue danube, and it was one of the best openers I’ve ever seen; had everyone singing along with the final notes as they marched out to life in technicolor
coldplay’s show last night was my favorite of all time

Ever since they’ve been touring this year and last, I have yet to read a bad review of any of their shows. They may get criticized (unfairly) a lot, but there’s no denying they put on an AMAZING show!

I’m curious. How far is New Jersey from Montreal, because this weekend was also the Osheaga music festival in Montreal which this year featured Coldplay (Friday) and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Vampire Weekend (Saturday) I know it’s not that far between places, but that’s cool how they can do both shows in the same weekend. Just Saying!

blow away by Coldplay and the stage effect…and the light…and of course not to mention my feet were full of mud shit. It was truly memory of a life time…

denzepp58 | 8/3/2009, 8:02 pm EST

Coldplay is the worst excuse for a rock band since KISS ….

soooo_indie | 8/3/2009, 8:22 pm EST

This just in . . . a bunch of music snobs got keyed into what the rest of the world have been listening to during the past year.

The punchline: they liked it!

okay, phew . . back to pitchfork to find out what I’m supposed to think.

Just saw Coldplay in Dallas a few weeks ago and they were fantastic. Glad i wasn’t covered in mud. I read below that it smelled… What did it smell like?? Rotten eggs or something?? Ugh.

I’m getting chills just thinking about how great Coldplay concerts are… Sucks they plan on taking a hiatus, but glad they extended their last tour. You can tell that they really care for their fans.

coldplayed-ur-mom | 8/4/2009, 10:28 am EST

coldplay suck.

Kevin | 8/4/2009, 12:45 pm EST

You had to click through two links just to get to this page to say that you think Coldplay sucks? Sounds like someone secretly loves Coldplay!!! ;)

Dave | 8/4/2009, 1:09 pm EST

As good as Coldplay was, the festival was a complete and utter disaster. They cancelled the first 5 hours of the show without any notice despite the tickets saying “rain or shine.” They made no effort to get creative and give concert goers a good experience to try and make up for their horrible treatment and locked everyone in a train station that was being guarded by armed guards who were keeping everyone inside during the delay. It was absolutely brutal and we weren’t given any type of compensation (even though the friday crowd got a free ticket just for sitting through rain that didn’t delay or cancel anything). We didn’t get what we paid for and were treated like crap.

Kevin | 8/4/2009, 1:25 pm EST

Sorry you had to go through all that crap Dave. Have you contacted anyone from the venue and raising some hell?

Kevin | 8/4/2009, 1:29 pm EST

soooo_indie. Pitchfork reviewed ‘Leftrightleftrightleft’ and guess what… They actually liked it! I almost fell out of my chair! They gave it a 6.8!!

doobler | 8/4/2009, 7:07 pm EST

meh | 8/5/2009, 11:29 am EST

Kevin | 8/5/2009, 2:27 pm EST

Doobler – is that why MCA called it “good shit!”

Kevin | 8/5/2009, 2:29 pm EST

And ‘meh’ – you clearly have some issues you need to work out. Not enough hugs from mommy, I don’t know. I hope you get things sorted out soon.

meh | 8/5/2009, 2:42 pm EST

hey kevin only chicks and gay guys listen to coldplay, and you don’t sound like a chick, although you probably act like one, burahahaha.too easy kev, too easy, snap!

Kevin | 8/5/2009, 2:54 pm EST

We’re all pulling for you ‘meh’.

I attended that concert and it was great, especially if you’re a 49 year old women, who surprisingly has enough energy to put up with the wind, rain and mud that was All Points West for 3 days. I enjoyed it all, except for the rain of the first day that I was unprepared for. I’d like to say I did it all for my 18 year old daughter and her friend, but I came for Coldplay and they didn’t let me down!!
