Glover on Living Colour’s Return With “The Chair in the Doorway”

When Living Colour returned out of hibernation with their 2003 reunion release, Collideøscope, fans probably assumed the group would return to their previous record-tour-record cycle. But this didn’t prove to the case, as the band — singer Corey Glover, guitarist Vernon Reid, bassist Doug Wimbish and drummer Will Calhoun — has subsequently focused solely on live work. But that’s all about to change with the release of the group’s fifth full-length, The Chair in the Doorway, on September 15th.

“It’s been a long time,” Glover tells Rolling Stone. “We’ve been putting this thing together for a number of years now, off and on. Between gigs, soundchecks, going to several studios, cataloging it and deciding what we were going to use. We really got focused on it last year. We were playing in Europe, and we took a break and went into a studio in Prague [Sono Studios]. That was really good, because we had already been playing, and we had gotten into that groove of playing together. When we got into the studio, we were in a really good place.”

“Burned Bridges,” “DecaDance” and “Behind the Sun” prove the classic Living Colour sound is back on The Chair in the Doorway, which is also a much more focused from a songwriting standpoint than its predecessor. “I think we were a little more concerned about what needed to be on this record, and what needed to be said,” Glover says.

Just don’t ask Glover to compare The Chair in the Doorway to such earlier Living Colour classics as Vivid or Time’s Up. “I can’t compare it — I wouldn’t even try to compare it. It would do a disservice to any of the other Living Colour records. Each one has its own distinct sort of thing about it, and its own idea that it’s trying to put across.”

With it now being nearly nine years since Living Colour members buried the hatchet and resuscitated the band (that lay dormant for a spell during the mid-late ’90s), Glover points out that his mates are still seeing eye to eye. “We get along great — this is the best we’ve felt about each other in a long time. Back in the day, the animosity — whether it was real or imagined — sort of affected everything. Sometimes it was positive, sometimes it was negative. I think we have a genuine appreciation of what we are and who we are, and understand each other.”

So what’s next for Living Colour after The Chair in the Doorway drops? “We’re going on the road. We start in September with North America, then we go to South America, then Europe, and we’ll see happens from there. Right now, this is the most important thing to me.”

I didn’t discover their music until after they broke up, it really just went over my head the first time. Too young, I guess… Genius, though, no doubt. Ridiculous live. Love Behind the Sun, can’t wait to own this, This is going to be a MUST HAVE on vinyl. Best wishes, to one of the world’s most under-rated rock bands… Liza

New single is amazing, and I am shivering with an-tici-pation for the new album. p.s. Hey Josh, it has been over 15 years since Muzz left. It is time to get over it and revel in the joy that is LIVING COLOUR!!!

Among the best bands of the 90’s. If the new stuff is as good as the first 3 records then this will bring them back to the spotlight.

ROADDOG | 7/31/2009, 11:18 am EST

I’m so excited for the revival of this great music. Hopefully it has an impact on the listeners of America, and we get more quality music in the mainstream.

I am glad Living Colour are back. Maybe Chair will finally put to rest fears that the Colours were a
“where-are-they-now,?” nostalgia or a one-hit wonder act because they certainlt are not to me! The
Colours are one of the best metal acts of all time and Chair will definitely rank up there with
Back in Black, British Steel, Number of the Beast, Vulgar Display of Power Crack the Skye
and their own Vivid, not to mention such “Brother” hard rock classics as Let Love Rule,
Purple Rain, There’s a Riot
Going On and Electric Ladyland.
LC deserve every bit of their Black Art-and hopefully, their reunion is permanent and will last a lifetime. Corey and Vernon, you both have made me proud!

wow | 7/31/2009, 5:14 pm EST

wtf is up with the hobo with the glowing red eyes in the back ground? he is like a cross between tyrome biggums and cyclops. A crack head that can light his crack with his eyes. Sweet

Bring on Danny for a gig!

DT | 8/3/2009, 1:12 am EST

Orion, I was at that show on th Times Up tour, too. Great show, my only gripes were they did not open up the pit area, and the money I spent on that, as a low budget high schooler living a little too far out of the way with out a car kept me from seeing Janes Addiction with Pixies and Primus. Damn life before the internet, if I could have seen the tour schedule before I bought those LC tix…

Funkified and Alright | 8/5/2009, 11:52 pm EST

Saw Corey Glover solo tour at Club Shine in NYC about 13 years ago. His solo album was incredible. Check out the single “Do you first then do myself” AMazing energy. Too bad the sound guy fucked up and Corey walked out in the middle of the set. Still love them. Saw LC open for King Crimson about 10 years ago at the Beacon in NYC. AWESOME! but lame audience.

Ron | 8/21/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Pinkpop Classic gig last week was great. Liked the new songs very much (doesn’t happen often that I really like a song the first time I hear it). Go see them (and buy the new album)!
