Green Day to Perform at VMAs, Billie Joe Armstrong Ready for “Memorable Experience”

Green Day and Pink have both been added to this year’s slate of performers at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Rolling Stone can reveal this morning. The band’s live performance from New York on September 13th will mark the 21st Century Breakdown punks’ third time hitting the VMAs stage: Green Day played Insomniac’s “Armatage Shanks” in their VMAs debut back in 1994, and followed that up over a decade later with American Idiot’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” in 2005, with “Boulevard” also taking home that year’s Video of the Year Award. (In ‘95, Green Day performed “Stuck With Me” on the VMAs via satellite, or “Spit-Cam” after Billie Joe Armstrong told the crowd to loogie into the lens.)

“We are excited to be performing at the Video Music Awards,” Armstrong said in a statement. “You never know what’s going to happen, and it’s always a memorable experience for us.” For an idea of what Green Day’s VMA night performance might look like, take a look at how their 21st Century Breakdown arena show and club gigs have gone down.

Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool will join previously announced VMAs performers Taylor Swift, who will sing a new version of Fearless‘ “You Belong With Me,” and Muse, who will debut their new single “Uprising.” British comedian Russell Brand will repeat as host after a tumultuous rookie year emceeing in 2008 during which he found a charming way to offend fans of the Jonas Brothers’ purity rings (relive his wackiness in our 2008 VMAs live blog). Pink, who did a memorable version of “So What” on a Hollywood back lot in ‘08, said, “Last year I got to jump out of a window at the VMAs in L.A., this year I can’t wait to blow the roof off Radio City in New York.”

The VMAs are returning to the Big Apple after calling Los Angeles and Las Vegas home for the past two years. In 2007, Britney Spears was scheduled to make her comeback on the show, but bombed during a lackluster performance of Blackout’s “Gimme More.” Last year Spears returned — to accept a pair of awards and appear in a batch of suggestive promo ads with Brand. So the big question this year: will Spears, now on a successful world tour for Circus, finally return to the VMAs stage — the site of so many of her iconic performances — in 2009? Will Madonna show up to promote “Celebration” from her hits collection Celebration, out in early August? Stay tuned to Rock Daily for all the latest news on MTV’s biggest night as the show draws closer.

The only way Green Day could surprise, is if they didn’t suck for once. I doubt that’s going to happen

bennie new york | 7/30/2009, 12:48 pm EST

Saw em five days ago in Albany, NY and they did not dissapoint-hell, they were great! Good move by MTV for once. Now they just need to dismantle their lineup of lame-brained reality shows and play some goddamned music!

Shiloh | 7/30/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Why must Taylor Swift perform??

Jeff | 7/30/2009, 2:58 pm EST

Maybe they’ll be the first non-pre-recorded/backing tracked performance since GNR in 2002.

Maybe not.

thedetoxg | 7/30/2009, 3:02 pm EST

GREEN DAY amazing performance should a shitty performance of a shitty song

T | 7/30/2009, 3:21 pm EST

Wait, they’re adding Green Day AND Pink to the roster, along with Muse? MTV is actually having TALENTED ARTISTS perform? Am I dreaming? What, are the ratings for “My New BFF” slipping or something? If the next thing that happens is that they start airing videos again, then it can only mean one thing: people are fed up with the crap MTV

branden | 7/30/2009, 3:21 pm EST

MADONNA!!!!!

Black Hole Sun | 7/30/2009, 3:23 pm EST

Wait, they’re adding Green Day AND Pink to the roster, along with Muse? MTV is actually having TALENTED ARTISTS perform? Am I dreaming? What, are the ratings for “My New BFF” slipping or something? If the next thing that happens is that they start airing videos again, then it can only mean one thing: people are fed up with the crap MTV has been spoon-feeding for years and MTV is FINALLY taking notice.

Black Hole Sun | 7/30/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Sorry, I forgot to fill in my name on the first post. But anyway, I am SHOCKED that MTV is coming to their senses.

M | 7/30/2009, 3:36 pm EST

Taylor Swift just ruined it!!! I LOVE Green Day, though!

Muse hungry | 7/30/2009, 4:04 pm EST

muse will leave them all standing in the dirt they deserve to be left standing in. Really dirty dirt – the kind you know will leave stains forever in your jeans no matter how many times you wash them; the kind that leaves a lingering smell much like the buddhists farts from northern Tibet – ioly yet repulsive.
It’s time Muse took over the world, our jobs, our homes…yes, even our very souls

BK | 7/30/2009, 4:18 pm EST

Green Day need sto hang it up.
Muse is a horrible band – I can’t make it through any of thier records befor throwing up!
Pink was cool – 8 years ago.
MTV is lame. Does anybody even watch it anymore?

Matthew Bellamy. | 7/30/2009, 4:35 pm EST

I think this performance might be a kicking off for Muse’s success in the United States. They’re the absolute best live band you’ll ever see. They deserve the same accolades the Kings of Leon have received in the past year. Hopefully, the American audience will realize how much they’ve been missing!

MJ | 7/30/2009, 4:39 pm EST

wow finally some fucking good artists!

@ Big Nate

Green Day doesnt suck, they’ve got more talent than you’ll ever have in your wasted, pathetic life.

They are going to be awesome at the VMA’s!

Fallen | 7/30/2009, 4:58 pm EST

@ BK
“Muse is a horrible band – I can’t make it through any of thier records befor throwing up!”

Really??? Are you sure you’re even listening to Muse records? Probably it’s a Muse tribute band and you think it’s the real deal. Muse is the best thing to happen to rock music since Guns N Roses came to bring authenticity to the lameness that was 80s hair metal. We’re in an era where crap bands like Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance are considered “rock”, Muse is the ONLY existing band to actually be making REAL music without hitching on the bandwagon of trends. Matt Bellamy is master guitarist, singer, songwriter and pianist, Chris Wolstenholme is a kick-ass bassist and Dom Howard’s drumming is actually reminiscent of Roger Taylor. For a three piece band, these guys kick some SERIOUS ass, way more than any other band in the past 20 years. They never fail to take stuff to the next level. I would actually put these guys in the league of Queen and Led Zeppelin. I hope to God these guys BLOW UP at the VMAs and take over the world. I hope they force the Jonas Brothers into early retirement. Muse has always been a severely underrated band, it’s about time people pay attention to them. Before Muse, I used to think Evanescence was the coolest band around, mainly because I was eleven when “Bring Me To Life” came out, and it was so refreshing to hear something on mainstream radio that wasn’t pop, R&B or hip-hop. But I discovered Muse, and officially concluded that Matt Bellamy wipes the floor with Amy Lee in EVERY ASPECT. Not to mention he doesn’t have a problem retaining his original bandmates.

wow | 7/30/2009, 4:58 pm EST

people think green day suck. what are they listening to? taylor swift?

dude... | 7/30/2009, 5:02 pm EST

pink has never been cool. And I don’t know how you could call Muse a “terrible band.”

Flush | 7/30/2009, 5:37 pm EST

Green Day AND Muse

MTV actually want real talent to perform on their VMA’s now.

Niceeeeeeeeeeeeee

eli | 7/30/2009, 7:15 pm EST

So great that Green Day are coming up again on VMAs.(vote for them on Teen Choice Awards if u r a real fan) They are totally the best live band and for Muse i dont know them but I would like to see some new quality band…hell, sometimes I think what kind of people really enjoy listening to crap music like miley, jonas bro, taylor swift, britney spears??? like really they may be good at their own style but their style sucks man…

Whatsername | 7/30/2009, 7:27 pm EST

Wow! Green Day, Pink and Muse?

This is a step up, I’ll admit.

Love Green Day
Like Pink
Like Muse.

This is strange…well, Taylor Swift is bearable. I’ll endure.

Amy | 7/30/2009, 7:30 pm EST

GREEN DAY!
YES YES YES!

finally, my boys are back

haha | 7/30/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Courtney Love was ranting on twitter about a surprise at the VMAs. Is she doing a duo with Britney?

Haushinka | 7/30/2009, 8:59 pm EST

everyone seems to think that green day sucks but they dont hav a reason to why. im sure the same people were listening to american idiot back in 2004. looks like some people are just jumping on the bandwagon for no reason. green day rocks.

Christian S. Inferno | 7/30/2009, 9:45 pm EST

BK thinks Green Day need to hang it up? I thought the same thing pre-2004. Now? They’re everything you would expect from a millions selling, arena filling, blistering rock-n-roll band with great lyrics that reach out and crush those who dare to listen. Ready to hang it up? Here’s hoping the fire that suddenly ignited under their asses never goes out. BK IS right about that MTV thing, tho.

420 | 7/30/2009, 9:51 pm EST

Hope KOL wins some awards too.

m. | 7/31/2009, 5:16 am EST

wow , love it! Green day and Muse ! that is exciting , they say that those bands are the best live , can`t wait !

BA | 7/31/2009, 6:07 am EST

it’d be awesome if they performed “A Quick One” with Townsend and Daltrey. That’d be memorable.

Snaves | 7/31/2009, 11:01 am EST

Their finally letting good music back on MTV eh? Can’t wait for Muse, like Green Day well enough. Will be changing the channel for Taylor Swift though, not gonna lie. Her music sucks and she’s even worse live.

StiGuy | 7/31/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Green day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!

Ohhh | 7/31/2009, 1:47 pm EST

i hope Madonna shows up and shows the world that her arms are in fact NOT SCAREY SKINNY. Those pictures were photoshopped and released to destroy her image. Doens anyone else find it curious that the press released those pictures the exact same day her new single was leaked?? Tsk, tsk…They are just mad that she doesn’t read the tabloids and therefore doesn’t pay them any attention. Paparazzi are disgusting human beings.

Me | 8/1/2009, 4:55 am EST

F**k yeah Muse and Green Day. And for everyone who’s bagging out Muse FUCK YOU

@fallen | 8/1/2009, 4:31 pm EST

You say they’re the ONLY band making music that hasn’t latched on to trends….Not true sir. Don’t forget about The Strokes. The White Stripes. The Arctic Monkeys. Good music IS out there people, you just have to find it. Oh, and I’m a muse fan myself, but I wouldn’t put them in the quality of Queen or Zep just yet, for the simple fact they haven’t released a masterpiece yet. YES, Absolution was good. So was Black Holes and Revelations. But don’t compare them with the legends until the provide us with a modern day classic (Is This It?, Elephant, Youth and Young Manhood).

ZZZZZZZ | 8/2/2009, 12:14 am EST

musebuddy | 10/13/2009, 5:59 pm EST

so i can point out reasons why green day is a terrible band now. They keep singing the same song over and over now. It’s nothing but, stop the war, war is bad, blah blah blah… GET OVER IT!!! On the other hand, muse kicks green days ass and always will
