Bruce Springsteen Playing All of “Born to Run” in Chicago

7/28/09, 8:16 am EST

A source close to Bruce Springsteen has confirmed what two Chicago newspapers (the Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune) are reporting: that Bruce and the E Street Band will perform their landmark 1975 album Born to Run in its entirety when the tour touches down at the city’s United Center on September 20th.

It’s unclear whether the band plans to do any full-album performances on other dates on the tour, like Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe and more bands have been doing recently. Last year Springsteen performed Born to Run and Darkness On The Edge of Town at a fundraiser show at New Jersey’s Count Basie Theater (read Rolling Stone’s report here). Earlier this year we asked E Street guitarist Steve Van Zandt what album he’d like to perform straight through. “It’s gotta be The River,” he said. “I’d want to include the outtakes on the Tracks collection. Then you have a hell of a show. You don’t have to do anything else.”

Completely unsubstantiated Internet rumors that should be taken with a huge grain of salt claim that Springsteen will do one album a night during his five-night stand at Giants Stadium this September and October. But in the off chance the rumors are true — and based on very little (but our Springsteen intuition) — we predict he’ll do Greetings From Asbury Park, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, Born To Run, Darkness On The Edge Of Town and Born In The USA.

Springsteen, who turns 60 in September, was recently asked by Italian Vanity Fair about his plans beyond this tour. “I think that the E Street Band will probably take a rest for a little while,” he said. “But it all will happen again. We’re lifers, we’re gonna go on forever.”

Bruce turns 60 on Sept 23! Can’t wait to see him and E Street Band on tour again this fall. They are never a disappointment and I know whatever they decide to play will be equally amazing!

brad | 7/28/2009, 1:29 pm EST

springsteen is played out.in a few years he’ll have to tour with billy joel and elton john.

D-Redge | 7/28/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Brad, unplug your computer forever

Scott | 7/28/2009, 2:02 pm EST

brad,
now I am a huge fan with a slanted perspective but if you think that springsteen and the e.street band are played out you have not been to their show. maybe you don’t enjoy their music, but nobody presents their music with as much energy and enthusiam as springsteen and the earth quaking viagara taking e. street band.

kingery | 7/28/2009, 3:35 pm EST

anyone who thinks Springsteen is played out is “played out” themselves. i saw them in Mil., march of ‘08 and it was an unreal show. i hate negativity on these boards…get a life.

Anonymous | 7/28/2009, 4:11 pm EST

there’s only one boss. gotta love him !

tom in vegas | 7/28/2009, 4:12 pm EST

kingery, if you hate negativity on these boards, get off them. People like brad have no life, no friends, and, this is obvious, no taste in music. They look on RS.com for stories about artists they don’t like so they can get on the boards and make fun of them. Brad is listening to Journey and Styx and REO Speedwagon and rocking out.

Don | 7/28/2009, 4:18 pm EST

I am seeing the Boss close Giants Stadium (last show). I can’t believe that he would choose to play just one album and then call it a night. I think that this is all just rumors and have a feeling that The Boss will perform an unreal show to close the stadium. Brad Dude, u r played out!!

EXBOSSFAN | 7/28/2009, 4:19 pm EST

IF YOU THINK HE NEEDS TO DO STUFF LIKE THIS TO SELL TICKETS AND HE’S NOT PLAYED OUT, YOUR AN IDIOT. I HAVE BEEN TO SO MANY BRUCE SHOWS THAT I KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. EVERY SHOW ON A TOUR IS THE SAME. A COUPLE DIFFERENTS SONGS SPRINKLED IN. AND TICKETS ARE $100-250. WTF? GO SEE PHISH FOR $49 AND SEE A UNIQUE SHOW EVERY NIGHT. I HAVE SEEN 12 CONSECUTIVE PHISH SHOWS BEFORE AND ONCE I SAW 2 BRUCE SHOWS IN A ROW. BRUCE IS AN ACT. PHISH IS A SHOW!

EXBOSSFAN | 7/28/2009, 4:25 pm EST

I MEANT YOU’RE AN IDIOT.
SORRY FOR THE BAD GRAMMER.

OH, AND WHAT IS HE GOING TO PLAY FOR THE OTHER 2 HOURS OF THE ACT?

livemusichead | 7/28/2009, 4:31 pm EST

I’ve read so many negative and angry comments lately! Everyone should see the documentary To Hell With Manners: The Decline in Civility. Everyone could learn from it. I did.

p.s.
I think Springsteen still rocks and rocks well.

STFU | 7/28/2009, 4:45 pm EST

I used to respect Bruce but ever since he sold ouy to Guitar Hero he’s just a poser now. His new album flopped bigtime

OK

EXBOSSFAN | 7/28/2009, 5:05 pm EST

“like Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe and more bands have been doing recently.”

MAN, DO I FEEL STUPID NOW. IF AEROSMITH AND THE CRUE ARE DOING IT, IT MUST BE GOOD. SERIOUSLY, BRUCE WAS THE BEST EVER. AS SOON AS HIS TICKETS WENT FROM $50 TO $250, I LOST INTEREST. PHISH AT RED ROCKS COMING UP. 4 NIGHTS, 4 TOTALLY UNIQUE SHOWS, $49/NIGHT.

Dude if you don’t like Bruce that’s your perogative.I personally think it makes you an idiot, but hey, you’ve got the right… :-)

But what is with the made up crap, like the $250 tickets?Bruce shows are about $110 including incidentals. So if you’ve been going to a lot of shows and paying $250,you’ve been paying scalpers.

I paid about $300 to go to Bonnaroo, and basically only went to see Bruce. But that was my Choice and I knew going in that was
the way I wanted it.There were actually some other shows I wouldn’t have minded seeing on the Sat,but I chose to hang out with other fans in line for Bruce, and had a ball. But again,I chose that…

And for those who are challenged in the reading comprehension dept, the plan is to play ALL of BTR,in addition to OTHER songs from the catalogue. They did the same thing at the Count Basie benefit last year, playing both Darkness and BTR.But the additiuon of songs from other albums kept the show in the 3 hr range. It’ll be the same in Chicago,it’s just special to hear ALL of BTR in sequential order…

Jack | 7/28/2009, 6:10 pm EST

I’m sure he will also play other songs, along with the entire Born to Run LP. Bruce is widely known as one of the best showmen ever, and his concerts are usually around 2 and-a-half hours long. (I’ve been to a few.)

ANd to say he ’sold out to Guitar Hero’ is just plain ignorant. So every band that’s featured on GH is a sell-out? Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, and even the Beatles are on it. Idiot.

frog | 7/28/2009, 7:52 pm EST

Sell-out? Are you that stuck in the 60s?

Every band that performs for money, every actor who gets paid, every ballplayer who signs a contract, every golfer who turns pro is a sell-out then.

Phish is a good band. I don’t think, though, that they could command much more than $49 dollars a ticket. And Bruce tickets are nowhere near $250. Top price in Chicago last spring was $95, but I’m sure scalpers got upwards of $250.

To each his own.

tom in vegas | 7/28/2009, 8:43 pm EST

to exbossfan, first, why are you yelling? Second, Bruce tickets are still in the $100 range, not bad, his last show in Spain the other night clocked in at close to 3 and a half hours, and as for Phish, great band, ask Trey who his rock hero is, he will tell you it’s Bruce. He said one of his biggest thrills EVER was Bruce joining Phish onstage at Bonnerroo for 3 songs. I downloaded it, sounds pretty good.

Point_Blank | 7/28/2009, 8:45 pm EST

Experiencing Born to Run from start to finish would be no less than stunning. With so much crap out there today, not many artists can put out a complete album where the songs and characters actually tie together.
It is too easy for kids to pick off a track or two to download in lieu of the entire record. They just don’t grasp the album concept.

To Jack, | 7/28/2009, 9:00 pm EST

Just a minor correction: The Beatles are ‘Rock Band’, not ‘Guitar Hero’…

I know… same basic thing, but I just wanted to point that out.

kingery | 7/29/2009, 1:53 am EST

bruce is a legend. just like lennon, marley, and yes, michael jackson. the boss, the “hardest working man in show-business” is feeling it, but notice he did say they will be taking a break after this tour….Chicago will be special!!!!!

fridaybrucefix | 7/29/2009, 9:11 am EST

I think it would be great to hear Born to Run in full, in proper sequence, as it is a classic through which I first heard Bruce. But, I’m with Steve, I’d love to hear the River plus all those great outtakes. There’s enough material right there for a complete show and a great one, at that.

Dave | 7/29/2009, 9:56 am EST

For the poster saying Bruce plays essentially the same show every night, you obviously do not know what you are talking about. Go to Backstreets.com and look at the setlists for the past 10 years – they are very diverse. Sure, some songs are the foundation/staples of the setlist. Many different opening songs on each tour, varied encores, and taking requests for audience signs points to anything but a standard show.

And for the moronic comment that Bruce’s new album tanked, who really cares? Not many artists sell records these days with all the pirating and downloadable music. Springsteen has been at the point for quite sometime that he puts out music that he enjoys making, regardless of the commercial ramifications. He was never going to top the astronomical sales of “Born in the USA” anyway.

Phish is just a poor man’s Grateful Dead. While they were important in rock history, I would guess that the Dead’s setlist varied so greatly is because half of the performers and most of the audience were all doped up on drugs and did not know the difference.

Dave | 7/29/2009, 9:57 am EST

One more thing for those of you worried will only perform the “Born to Run” album and then be done. It is not going to happen. I bet he plays a good dozen (if not more) songs in addition to BTR.

Cullen | 7/29/2009, 11:07 am EST

As a loyal springsteen fan. I would love to hear him play the entire BTR album and for those nay-sayers he always plays songs from that album anyway so whats the difference if he plays every song? Either way it will be a kick ass show because he is THE BOSS!

Courteney Cox | 7/29/2009, 12:20 pm EST

Can’t wait for “Born in the U.S.A.” night. Can I jump on stage when they start playing “Dancing In The Dark”?

Big S | 7/29/2009, 12:42 pm EST

I bet Bruce will play Born to Run and an awesome variety of others since he already plays half the songs on Born to Run nightly. He’ll probably play anywhere from 13-18 other tunes on top!

fvaldes7 | 7/29/2009, 12:49 pm EST

cool. love it when artists play entire albums in one night. rock on!

Me | 7/29/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Dave, you were making a great point until you said the reason the “Dead’s setlist varied so greatly is because half of the performers and most of the audience were all doped up on drugs and did not know the difference.”

That’s moronic. The Grateful Dead played wildly different setlists every night because their approach to a live show was much different than Springsteen or most rock bands.

And EXBOSSFAN, you sound like an idiot. First off, Bruce’s tix max at about $100. Sorry if you’ve been getting ripped off. Secondly, most of Bruce’s shows are different but each tour has a general feel to it. If you don’t like that then it’s a good thing that you stopped going.

PETER NORTH IS THE KING | 7/29/2009, 3:51 pm EST

“BRUCE IS AN ACT. PHISH IS A SHOW!”

I was never so bored in my life than when I was tortured listening to Trey & Company noodle around a song for 20 minutes at a time. Phish is OK if you like improv, but if you like to rock then you will be bored senseless as I was.

EXBOSSFAN | 7/29/2009, 5:13 pm EST

you mean to tell me that a few years ago my 300 level seats in the united center that cost me $85 were the same price as people on the floor? well, i guess i really did get screwed. the sound was awful up there.

and just so you don’t think i can’t love, hopefully all of you know he holds back tickets to sell at the boxoffice before the show to screw the scalpers. that is one of the best things anyone has done to protect their fans from scaplers. what, was that a secret?

a couple responses:

i was not yelling.
my caps lock button was jammed.

‘phish can’t command more than $49?’ – four-day passes to red rocks to see phish are being scalped for $1000. if they played 8 days in a row they would still sell out. i wonder how many people would go to a bruce festival if he was the only band there. i bet there will be over 80,000 at the phish fest this fall.

Chicago IS special. with or without bruce.

when i heard bruce played with phish i freaked, then i listened to it. ouch.

i know an alderman personally in chicago and he has already told me that they are working on getting approval for a concert at wrigley field with bruce, elton john, billy joel for next year.

and i’ll take 2 1/2 hours of originality vs. 3 1/2 hours of close-ups of bruce’s bleeding fingers. yeah they’re bleeding, he’s hacking at those strings. thats why there are two other guitarists.

just kidding about wrigley field.
go see phish! wait, no, don’t see phish, getting tickets is hard enough.

Jungleland2 | 7/29/2009, 7:23 pm EST

This “Play the record in order” thing is catching on. My uncle just saw Steely Dan do Aja last night.

The only problem with this for Bruce is that his shows are unpredictable and have an overall theme. It will be tough to do this in this format.

I’ve seen 10 Springsteen shows in 25 years and have never been disappointed..not once

Jack | 7/29/2009, 10:21 pm EST

EXBOSSMAN:

If you’re an ‘ex’ Boss fan then you were never a fan to begin with.

P.S. I love how one of your posts starts of in normal mode then you’re CAPS button suddenly gets, ‘locked.’ Idiot, if you hate this artist so much get the hell outta here. No one wants to hear your boredom speaking.

EXBOSSFAN | 7/30/2009, 12:56 pm EST

jack-oof,

no, i WAS a huge fan. then i went to see phish.

i NEVER said i hate bruce. in fact i think i said he was the best ever. before phish.

when you copy clip something from an article, it doesn’t change to upper case if your caps lock is on. arse.

i think the e street band is very talented but i guess i have higher standards than most. at the 2 alpine valley shows i went to last month, phish did not repeat a song in the 2 days. when they made their comeback they did a 3 day run in hampton, va. they did not repeat a song in the 3 days.

last time bruce was here my friend text’d me and asked for my call for the opener. i went to the world wide web, looked at the opener for the last ten shows and told him i think it will be badlands. he told me later that i made a great call. i did make a great call, i saved 95 bucks that night by not going.

i think bruce and his band have the talent to play unique shows every night. but they choose not to. why?

if bruce decides to cover greetings for the first set, the wild…e street shuffle for set 2 and the river for set 3, i will eat every word i put here.

i had a rough week so ruffeling some feathers has been fun,
thanks for hatin’ on me. i will not be back.

Joe Puma | 7/30/2009, 9:01 pm EST

What a thrill for we lifetime Bruce fans it would be to hear “Meeting Across The River”and “Night”live during the same show almost 35 years after the release of the “Born To Run”album.I’ve seen the E-Streeters 7 times from ‘84 to the present, and I haven’t had the good fortune to hear either of those tunes. The folks in Chicago will be very lucky indeed.

STFU | 7/31/2009, 1:25 am EST

People who know nothing about Guitar Hero obviously don’t know that the people who make the game are posers

clutch rules | 7/31/2009, 4:25 pm EST

hey exbossfan! i think all your comments are right on! you really know what youre talking about.

EXBOSSFAN | 7/31/2009, 4:37 pm EST

clutch? they kill! lets have drinks and see where it goes from there!

clutch rules | 7/31/2009, 5:41 pm EST

sounds good bossfan! cheers!

pastol | 7/31/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Wow, all of the comparisons, please, stop already. Phish and Bruce and The Dead are ALL great bands. Each one of them is a stand out and does great music. Why hate on anyone cause you happen to maybe like another band a little better. There is room for all of them in my library. Dig it!

pastol | 7/31/2009, 8:22 pm EST

BTW, I’m only 130 miles south of Chitown, I NEED to see The Boss one more time (at least) before I die. Gotta go. Dig it!

harvey | 8/3/2009, 1:56 pm EST

the guy is a billionaire and he sing born to run. does springsteen really know what its like to live from paycheck to paycheck. does he know what its like to be hungrey? keep giving this rich phoney your money. i liked him years ago when i was in college but cant relate to him now.

fwdenny | 8/3/2009, 4:50 pm EST

Phish? You mention a Phish show? Phish sucks.

kbesley | 8/4/2009, 8:30 am EST

Bruce tickets, if bought from a reputable ticket place, are 45 – 100 some dollars. So what if Bruce plays some of the same songs, they are great songs!!!!!!! There are only 8 songs on BTR, of course he will play more, he’s not out to piss off his fans. I have no idea who Phish is, but I am going to go check them out now.

bob223 | 9/4/2009, 10:50 am EST

ok i dont know who this harvey guy is, but holy shit your a dumbass if you think that about bruce

he was dirt poor and lived above some surf board factory in asbury park and literally was starving some nights, he worked his ass off and made brilliant music
