“The Simpsons” Adds Coldplay’s Martin to List of Musical Guests

Over the past 20 seasons, The Simpsons has recruited the biggest names in music to guest-voice on the show, and Season 21 will continue the tradition: EW’s Hollywood Insider reports Coldplay’s Chris Martin will lend his voice to an upcoming episode. Martin and Coldplay will appear as themselves as Homer Simpson, after winning the lottery, hires the band to play a private performance for himself and Bart. “When Bart goes to the bathroom, Coldplay has to stop,” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told EW.

(Check out our “Springfield Rocks” gallery to see Simpsonified versions of some of the biggest stars in music and The Simpsons-related Rolling Stone covers.)

One of The Simpsons‘ first musical guests was Michael Jackson, who guested — under the alias of John Jay Smith — as a mental patient named Leon Kompowsky whose convinced he is Michael Jackson. Jackson also had a hand in penning two songs that featured on The Simpsons, “Do the Bartman” and “Happy Birthday, Lisa.” (On the Sunday following Jackson’s death, The Simpsons reaired the “Bartman” video, and followed that with Jackson’s Kompowsky episode the following week.)

Green Day played a large role in The Simpsons Movie, performing the show’s iconic theme song and ultimately getting killed after playing a concert that kick-started the film’s garbage-fueled plot line. The show has also featured appearances by three Beatles: Ringo Starr, George Harrison (in the Homer’s Barbershop Quartet episode) and Paul McCartney, who along with his wife Linda taught Lisa about the wonders of being a vegetarian.

Episodes have also featured U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Who, R.E.M., Phish, Sting, the Ramones, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Elvis Costello, Tom Petty, Blink-182, David Byrne, the White Stripes (more on that here), Aerosmith as endorsers of “Flaming Moe’s” and Johnny Cash as a Guatemalan Insanity Pepper-induced coyote that talks to a hallucinating Homer. But perhaps the most memorable music-related episode of The Simpsons was “Homerpalooza,” which featured appearance by Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Cypress Hill and Peter Frampton.

Y’all forgot Metallica!

DORF | 7/27/2009, 12:41 pm EST

You have great bands like Anthrax and Motorhead that are practically begging for a guest spot on the Simpsons, but they still insist on having pussies like Coldplay on the show. Of course, given the Simpsons is still the funniest show on TV, I’ll probably watch anyway.

Mike | 7/27/2009, 12:49 pm EST

Unfortunately the Simpsons has been terrible for a long time now. I like Coldplay, but the show has turned into a never ending series of guest appearances. Back in the early days, guest stars usually were written into an episode as a character. Now it’s this Simpsons episode with Coldplay, N Sync, the Who, etc… At some point it got ridiculous.

As for the MJ episose, interesting commentary on the DVD for that one. If I recall, Jackson did the speaking for that episode, but not the singing, for some odd reason. Or maybe it was the other way around.

bennie new york | 7/27/2009, 12:49 pm EST

I don’t care much about The Simpsons anymore. The older episodes are great, but after the movie I think they’ve fallen off. I’m sure that they will play up Coldplay’s pussydom for laughs however. It’s not like anyone in Springfield would have much inclination towards Coldplay after all(okay maybe Smithers.)

Kevin | 7/27/2009, 12:50 pm EST

Not really sure why Coldplay are considered “pussies” but whatever. Can’t wait to see this episode!

Joe | 7/27/2009, 1:20 pm EST

….and the transformation of Coldplay to U2 is almost complete, minus the awesome songs, killer live shows, and personality.

STFU Hater! | 7/27/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Kevin, Kevin, Kevin – it’s America, unless you’re rapping about selling crack, doing a country hooe-down or screaming “WOOOAAAARRGGHHHHH!!!” you are a pussy.

Hey Kevin | 7/27/2009, 1:30 pm EST

Don’cha know? You have to have a giant wart like Lemmy or a stupid beard like Scott Ian in order not to be a pussy.

Kevin | 7/27/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Joe…
Go to one of their shows. You’ll change your mind about that.

Durden | 7/27/2009, 1:35 pm EST

Coldplay are actually overtaking U2 as far as sales and popularity

Joe | 7/27/2009, 1:43 pm EST

I’ve been to two of their shows. Above average at their best moments; clumsy and unfocused at their best. U2 blows them out of the water every time.

Kevin | 7/27/2009, 1:53 pm EST

What show did YOU see?!

Metal | 7/27/2009, 1:58 pm EST

what about metallica

Kevin | 7/27/2009, 2:02 pm EST

Metallica would be GREAT to see on The Simpsons!

Scott | 7/27/2009, 2:27 pm EST

If You didnt know coldplay is the worlds biggest band……how the hell is this amazing group pussies? is it because you dont recognize talent?

Choopy | 7/27/2009, 2:52 pm EST

Although it’s nice to see these bands animated on the Simpsons show, Homer isn’t really a modern/alternative rock fan but in past episodes has shown he’s more of a classic rock, psychedelic 60’s/70’s rock fan. I can’t picture Homer requesting Coldplay to play live for him. But it will still be cool to see them on the show.

Joe | 7/27/2009, 2:55 pm EST

I saw them at the Coors Ampitheatre in San Diego on their Twisted Logic tour and prior to that on the tour behind Rush of Blood. The Coors show was painfully forced and Chris’ singing was off. Closed their Rush of Blood show with “Amsterdam” under house lights and that was pretty good. They have a long way to go to come close to U2.

Schultz | 7/27/2009, 2:57 pm EST

The Simpsons are stooping to new levels of suckitude with Coldplay – oh and just because an album sells, doesn’t make it good. It means that there are a lot of people out there with shitty taste in music.

Edz | 7/27/2009, 3:12 pm EST

Kev… actually Metalica was on the Simpson’s a while back (when Otto’s Bus broke down) I’m sure it’s on you tube somewhere.

Hopefully Bart will be wearing a Chickenfoot shirt and Nelson will beat up Chris. Ha Ha…

Kevin | 7/27/2009, 3:27 pm EST

Joe, if you don’t like the songs, why did you go to two shows?
And you haven’t seen the Viva La Vida show, so you have NO idea what you’re talking about.

Kevin | 7/27/2009, 3:39 pm EST

Shultz, and just because a band wins lots of awards all over the world doesn’t mean they’re good either?

Schultz | 7/27/2009, 7:20 pm EST

Kevin,
Most awards are based on sales that are propagated by those with bad taste. Other awards are given by industry “experts” based on God knows what.

Miley Cyrus has awards, would you rank her up there with Coldplay? I would.

P.S. Pay attention and learn how to spell names, especially those right in front of you…

kcv | 7/27/2009, 7:39 pm EST

hasn’t this show been on long enough? it’s not that i don’t like it, but 20 years, let’s move on already….

sdsd | 7/27/2009, 8:38 pm EST

Why do they bother with crap like coldplay put a decent band on

Anonymous | 7/27/2009, 8:48 pm EST

I liked Coldplay in their early days. Parachutes was perfection, and A Rush Of Blood To The Head was okay. I saw the band perform live on both those tours, and enjoyed it…

… Then came X&Y, and i found that the more popular they became, the worse their performances got, and the worse their songwriting and albums got.

The way, way, WAYYYYYY overrated Viva La Vida, was the final straw for me. You can keep your Coldplay. I’ve had enough, thanks!

Also, comparing the popularity of Coldplay in 2009, to U2 in 2009 is ridiculous. Let’s see how big Coldplay still are in 2026.

PrincessM92 | 7/27/2009, 9:17 pm EST

YAY, I can’t wait to watch this episode!!!

AlAl | 7/28/2009, 3:33 am EST

I tried to like this band. they are constantly placed alongside bands like rem, u2 and radiohead and I thought I should at least check out the albums as singles can quite often be garbage like the flat and annoying “yellow” and not reflect the true greatness of a band. After repeatedly listening to all the albums I was extremely disappointed. There were occasional interesting moments but overall I came to the conclusion that is the most sucky, overrated weak as piss band ever. Chris Martin infuriates me . You know how theres love at first sight? It was literally hate at first sight when I first saw his face and heard his pouncy voice. I tried to like them though, i really did. Besides , remember when bono said he was a wanker? I mean if bono thinks hes a wanker , being at least a little bit self aware of his own persona ( spoken word hallelujah ) then the guy must be the biggest tosser on the planet. The Simpsons are pretty cool but

k16x | 7/28/2009, 8:16 am EST

I wonder what it’ll be like if they put all those bands in Family Guy instead of The Simpsons…

Ali Beer-Line | 7/28/2009, 9:41 am EST

Anyone who names their kids ‘Moses’ and ‘Apple’ is a douchebag.

Kevin | 7/28/2009, 9:50 am EST

Sorry Schitz… I mean Schultz! my bad!

You said MOST awards. They’ve won every type of award, even the ones I’m sure even YOU find credible. And so if a band you really liked won an award, you would still dismiss it? Or is it just the bands YOU don’t like?

Just out of curiosity, what bands do you like?

Sam | 7/28/2009, 11:19 am EST

Metallica have been on The Simpsons.

Schultz | 7/28/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Kevin; 1, don’t be an idiot high school kid ; 2, I like bands with a bit more substance, a bit more range, and a bitmore impact than Coldplay. I am not going to get into a “you suck because you you like certain bands” argument here, and there may be some awards that they have that might be worthy, but like Pete Townsend said – and I am paraphrasing – who needs another piece of fucking plastic?

Kevin | 7/28/2009, 2:19 pm EST

I’m not the one correcting someone’s spelling.
I don’t know why you can’t just tell me what bands you like.
Coldplay has plenty of impact, range and substance. You just have to listen.

Natch | 7/28/2009, 2:47 pm EST

“Hello bands… who is playing with the London Symphony Orchestra… C’mon people someone ordered the London Symphony orchestra…possibly while high… Cyprus Hill I’m looking in your direction.”…. CLASSIC !!!

DORF | 7/28/2009, 9:13 pm EST

Coldplay is nothing more than a flavor of the month, and Chris Martin sounds more like he’s whimpering rather than singing. The media shoves shitty bands like this down the masses’ throats, and since the majority of America is herd mentality we eat it up. I’ll give Coldgay another five years at the most.

As for Anthrax, they’ve been together almost 30 years and have a new disc coming out soon. And Motorhead, they’ve been together almost 40 years!! Lemmy’s the ultimate road dog, and not only is he gonna outlive us all, he’ll still be onstage when he’s 90 years old cranking out Ace Of Spades and Metropolis.

DORF | 7/28/2009, 9:16 pm EST

Other bands I’d like to see on the Simpsons:

SLAYER!!
Godsmac k
Cheap Trick
ZZ Top
Green Day (another flavor of the month but at least they’re good)

Schultz | 7/28/2009, 10:04 pm EST

Kevin, I listened to Coldplay when Parachutes came out, and then a Rush of Blood to the Head, and then lost interest… everything started sounding the same and the more popular they became the worse their music turned out.

I corrected your spelling because it was my name and then you had to get smart with it.., hence the HS remark. I really don’t know why I am bothering with all this since I really can care less one way or the other… they suck out loud imo.

Doh | 7/29/2009, 12:14 am EST

Coldplay is the kind of band Bart with his b*llshit detector would hate and mock. It’s the first awful band they’ve let come on the show, d’oh !

Kevin | 7/29/2009, 9:11 am EST

Well, in MY opinion they are one of the best bands around. They don’t sell out, they care passionately about their music (which they write ALL of!) and energize and care about every fan. They may not snort coke off a hookers ass or go on benders and throw up on stage. And yes his childrens names are a little funny, but what does that have to do with the music? It’s just an excuse for people who don’t like to give.
You hate them, I love them and nothing will change that. They’re going to keep making music for years to come, and may win over some of you people and they may not. And just because a lot of people hate them and say they suck, doesn’t mean they do! It just means that’s you’re opinion. They’re not making music for the people who hate them.
There’s a lot of bands that I can’t stand and don’t listen to. Doesn’t mean they suck, just means I don’t like their music and I won’t listen to it. If there’s an article about the Jonas Brothers or Lady Gaga, I DON’T READ IT! I don’t write a whole dissertation about why they “suck”. I just leave it alone and comment on the bands that I love.

Peter | 7/30/2009, 8:26 am EST

Coldplay are the best and biggest band in the world at the moment so it’s only right they get an appearance on the greatest tv show ever made! There music to ignorant folk is “boring”. In reality they’ve never listened to a Coldplay album where there are much better songs than the likes of Viva, Speed of Sound etc. Cemetries of London, Lovers In Japan, Green Eyes, Square One etc – absolutely fantastic songs.

Jim | 7/30/2009, 8:46 am EST

Cold Play??
Yes an aptly named band.

Heather | 8/1/2009, 6:31 am EST

Love the Simpsons and I LOVE Coldplay even more. Yes, some people do not like them…so what..they have sold more cd’s than most bands could ever dream of…The best thing about them is they are so humble…They do not act like the typical rock band…cocky, doing drugs, drinking and being overall idiots…

coldplayfan | 8/1/2009, 9:59 pm EST

ok i don’t know why people hate coldplay so much they are a very talented band and the people saying they suck are saying that bands like motorhead, cheaptrick, zz top, and godsmack are good bands give me a break coldplay has more talent then any of those bands put together and also when bono called chris a wanker he was just kidding they are actually friends

Can’t we just agree that Peter Frampton WON’T finish all that watermelon?

evelyn27 | 10/2/2009, 10:47 pm EST

I hope they let the guy from Coldplay say some funny stuff and not just play music, I know they could, they’ve all got good senses of humor and can be quite comical, intentionally of course. Looking forward to this.

girl you dont know | 11/3/2009, 6:13 pm EST

Coldplay rocks, some peole just dont get their music. the combionation of wonderful stringged instruments with Chris’s voice is extremely appealing and breath taking. (at least it is to me) remember, beauty (and good music) is in the eyes (or ears) of the beholder.

girl you dont know | 11/3/2009, 6:21 pm EST

i am just happy that Coldplay will be on the show and get more publisity then they can make more albums and use the money they make to give to charity. did you know that Coldplay donated 1 million dolllars to charity? some people may not think they’re good, but at least their nice.
