Exclusive: Eddie Van Halen Recovering After Hand Surgery

Eddie Van Halen is said to be on the mend after undergoing surgery to treat increasing pain in his left hand.

“During the last leg of our tour, I started developing pain in my thumb and my pinky. I didn’t think much of it at the time,” the guitarist says. “It got progressively worse to the point that about three months ago I wasn’t able to play at all. My pinky and my thumb were totally locked up and felt like there was something broken.”

Van Halen sought out specialists in Düsseldorf, Germany, who initially began treating the guitarist for arthritis, but soon discovered a bone spur, twisted tendon and a cyst in the joint of his left thumb.

“They said the only way to fix it was surgery, which of course scared the shit out of me, but I was told it was the only way to fix it,” Van Halen says. “Surgery was a success, now I just have to let it heal. I am totally jazzed that they found the problem, fixed it and in about four months my hand will feel like I am 18 again. Thank God.”

(Check out photos of Eddie’s history with Van Halen)

Van Halen is said to be recovering nicely, having already regained his reach and full spread of his hand. He’s said to be taking his recovery slowly, however, to insure he heals properly. His rehabilitation should be complete in 4-6 months.

“In the meantime I am able to write a bit, but can not overexert my hand because it needs to heal properly,” the guitarist says.

His stitches come out in a few days, and he’s confident he’ll be able to play at maximum intensity when he completes his recovery.

Oh Great. | 7/23/2009, 3:24 pm EST

Why would anyone want to listen to a guitar that sounds like a police siren?

Jay | 7/23/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Can this band ever put out new music again. Ed just said that after his honeymoon it was back in the studio. I love VH to death but just hang it up already. You keep hearing Eddie say he has tons of music pooring out of him. I know the surgery could not be helped but I grow tired of hearing about plans for a new record. I’m a huge fan but for once tell the fans whats really going on instead of pushing it back again and again. Just retire already. It so lame

bocephus | 7/23/2009, 3:45 pm EST

Have a full recovery, Eddie! Then kick ass with a new VH record and tour!!

matthalen | 7/23/2009, 3:46 pm EST

To “Oh Great”-

Why would anyone want to post to a story like this if they think what EVH does is simply “making a guitar sound like a police siren”? Pretty damn stupid man…

Jere | 7/23/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Because The Clash’s “Police on My Back” is awesome, but that’s neither here nor there. Van Halen rocks.

Eddie’s still alive? I thought he had settled in for a dirt nap. No wait, its his band who died. A loooooooong time ago. Never mind.

Ray | 7/23/2009, 7:51 pm EST

It’s karma for dumping on Valerie and for dropping Michael. These things always find a way to come back and bite you on your ass, Edward.

Anonymous | 7/23/2009, 10:18 pm EST

Hey, wasn’t that the guitar supposed to be have been buried with the dude from Pantera? Dirtbag or Dimebag someone

VAiN | 7/24/2009, 12:52 am EST

You guys are nuts. Wait till VH comes back with Dave at the wheel…

You’ll all be lining up to get in.

Kris | 7/24/2009, 2:50 am EST

Here’s to a speedy recovery and god bless you Eddie!!! Don’t care if you ever release any new music again, your music has given me the ultimate soundtrack in my life. Anything new from Van Halen is just a bonus!!!!

KING EDWARD VAN HALEN…I salute you!!!!!

Bob | 7/24/2009, 6:46 am EST

Ray your comments are a little virulent, are you ok? Didn’t your dad and mom love you? Maybe I should ease up and not take the ” internet thing” too seriously…after all, after reading dumbass comments like yours, it stands to reason your probably in middle school anyway…

Bob | 7/24/2009, 6:52 am EST

Jay I agree to a degree… but from Ed and Alex’s perspective they CANNOT ever have another VHIII or it would kill VH. If that isn’t enough, there is the huge gap of no new music and lots of fan anticipation and the standard they created to live up to… I am sure Ed does have a mountain of ideas since 1997, but I can guess after his cancer, he developed arthritis and gradually played worse…confidence and ability is very important for timeless VH recordings…..

Edz | 7/24/2009, 9:20 am EST

“Hey, wasn’t that the guitar supposed to be have been buried with the dude from Pantera? Dirtbag or Dimebag someone”

Ten bucks says that’s one of his $25000.00 replicas. Besides the one that is burried with Dimebag is the yellow and black mutt he made between VH and VHII…

Fail | 7/24/2009, 10:19 am EST

While Eddie is without a doubt a god among guitarists, does anyone really think that their brand of music would go over well today? Example, if Hot for Teacher came out today people would probably just laugh at it.

Kim Molien | 7/24/2009, 10:30 am EST

Get Well, Ed !

Edz | 7/24/2009, 10:52 am EST

Just as a lot of people I’m sure would laugh at “I wanna Hold Your Hand” or “Teddy Bear”

Maybe it doesn’t seem to translate to the sexually desensitized bump and grind that passes as pop music today, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t a great song.

Dirty Duck | 7/24/2009, 11:19 am EST

No matter what site you go to there are always gonna be some heartless asshole fans. Unbelievable. Have a little heart jerkoff’s. Eddie doesnt owe anyone shit….
He’s done more than enough musically then any of you with your pathetic little lives…
Losers.

Dave | 7/24/2009, 12:38 pm EST

I agree Jay, for the love of god please put a new cd out with roth and go on tour. We have waited long enough for new VH tracks with Roth. All I hear is about Ed’s mountain of new stuff………lets go !

Dave | 7/24/2009, 12:39 pm EST

versedandvested | 7/24/2009, 2:42 pm EST

nothing personal against VH at all, but many here are correct. Without a complete, wholesale change in the band’s sound, they have absolutely zero chance of any real success now.

Great for the fans though, I guess?

I Love Cake | 7/24/2009, 4:51 pm EST

The real tragedy is Ed may not be able to play the keyboards ever again. Oh to never here the opening to Jump, or that song off of VH3 where Eddie sings. Oh God the humanity.

pete | 7/24/2009, 5:51 pm EST

sh!+ or get off the pot. swallow your vanity and put a band together already.

Blues View | 7/24/2009, 7:24 pm EST

Chickenfoot is playing where Van Halen should be now.

Randal | 7/24/2009, 8:52 pm EST

Sammy brought legitimacy to the group. Dave was comic relief.

Duke | 7/24/2009, 9:03 pm EST

Wondered why they sounded so TERRIBLE the last time I saw them. Or was that because Wolfgang played so bad?? Eddies solo was boring and uninspired. Does going through the motions mean anything to anyone?? No offense but at least a lot of the ‘old timers’ still touring out there go out of their way to really play/sound good for their fans. Aerosmith sounds 100 times better now than they did in their stoner days. I don’t think Ed is staying on the wagon.

yep | 7/24/2009, 9:07 pm EST

I would have figured that he has had surgery on his hand in the past. a lot of guitarists do. surprised this was his first.

truthbetold | 7/24/2009, 9:54 pm EST

Hes “they” been sounding terible because eddies talent was derived from alcoholism. im not spreading crap by this, he started drinking when he was real young 10-12 when he started getting serious with the rifts, and the booze. he would sit and down 3 colt 45 tall boys that his brother would bring him and pratice everyday. all thru the 80’s and 90’s he was wasted on stage, didnt look it but he was. no pro alky ever does look drunk. but thats all behind him now.

People Suck | 7/24/2009, 10:06 pm EST

What’s with the retards putting Eddie and VH down,if you don’t like them go listen to the Jonas Brothers and go to hell.

VH Old & New | 7/24/2009, 11:02 pm EST

I saw VH in the early ’80s and then 3 shows in 2007-08. I thought they sounded *fantastic* in 2 of the 3 recent shows and pretty damn good in the other one. There is still plenty of Guitar God left in EVH and stage presence left in DLR. I can wait an extra few months for whatever is their next project.

I had hand surgery myself and know the long road in front of EVH. I wish him the patience and determination to recover 100%.

Judy | 7/24/2009, 11:36 pm EST

Eddie, Hope you have a speedy recovery and we can he you play again soon.

“Sammy brought legitimacy to the band.” HaHaHaHaHaHaHaHaHa!!! What an idiot. You must have been born after 1983…

Mike | 7/25/2009, 4:02 pm EST

Glaqd to hear that EVH is doing well.

Cj | 7/25/2009, 6:59 pm EST

Let me clear something up.The axe in the picture is the REAL Frankenstrat. It was black and white (pictured on VH 1 cover) before Eddie painted it in ‘79 or ‘80. The black and yellow one featured on VH 2 is a different guitar entirely, and is actually buried with Dimebag.

punk | 7/25/2009, 8:13 pm EST

I heard that eddie didnt really play that guitar (original frankenstrat) in the last 20 years or so and had it in a case for so long that the pots had all froze up, the bridge was locked up as well. he had to do a lot of work to it just to get it to play again. this was around the time fender got interested in doing an exact copy, but ed didnt like the idea at first. took a lot of convincing by his friends and guitar techs to go thru with it.

Ray | 7/26/2009, 2:12 am EST

Ed, I assure you my mother and father loved me a lot but I am touched by your concern. And no, I am not in Middle School. I grew up in the sixties. That was the era when, you know, music was music and bands couldn’t hold their fans with an album every decade or so. They actually created new music on a regular basis or they were left behind…Well, all of the bands with the exception of The Who or the Stones. Those two have taken irrelvancy to a higher level. Van Halen never sounded different after their first album but what should I expect from a generation of fans who made stars out of cookie-cutter “talent” like Britney Spears and her ilk.

SLAYERSWINE | 7/26/2009, 7:56 am EST

I heard he hurt his hand from flipping off singers…

Bob | 7/26/2009, 5:18 pm EST

Diamond Dave and Sammy are old and washed up. I wish VH would stop the BS and get Gary Cherone back for their greatest lineup yet.

elvis fischer | 7/26/2009, 8:40 pm EST

Glad to hear he is recovering well.

HOW MANY OF YOU CAN PLAY A MUSICAL INTRUMENT AT ALL LET ALONE WRITE A DECENT MUSICALLY STRUCTURED SONG.
BE HONEST.

WITHOUT ELECTRONIC STUDIO HELP WOULD YOU SOUND COMPETENT?

i THOUGHT SO NOW SHUT UP/

Eric G. | 7/27/2009, 5:11 pm EST

You know I just love when this younger youth generation tells this guitar legend to hang it up when I swear there hasn’t been no more than a small handful of great rock bands in over 20 freaking years!! Ask yourself why VH kicked the CRAP out of current bands in concert income profits last year.. How is that possible!?!?! I’ll tell you why….cause other than possibly Disturbed & Nickleback, they all SUK!! And you know why?!?….NO GREAT GUITAR INTROS ANYMORE!!!, The last good ones were Enter Sandman or Welcome to the Jungle!!! And HOW long ago were they?!?!

You NEED Eddie to come back, cause you young music pukes aren’t getting it! Your $hitty music is KILLING rock right now….You need to learn how to play, so these icons don’t need to keep coming back out of retirement and save your sorry a$$es.

Steve NYC | 7/27/2009, 10:25 pm EST

Good post by Eric G. Some other moron in an earlier post said something like “if Hot For Teacher” came out today people would laugh at it.
WHAT?!?!?!?
First of all, that song shows a band just mastering their instruments all the way through, with a dynamic frontman at the peak of his powers to boot. That song AND video by the way are still relevant today. I hear it on the NY airwaves probably a dozen times a week -easy!
Now for argument’s sake if you want to say the lyrics are a bit too “fun” for today’s rock, well then i guess other rock classics like “Rock and Roll,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” “Gimme Some Lovin’” would all also be “laughed” at today. If that’s true, that says more about the sad state of music today and the idiots writing about it than it does about “Teacher” and countless other classics.
So, so sad. Eddie VH and his band could play circles around most current “artists.”

Huh. | 7/28/2009, 11:15 am EST

@Eric G.: Nickleback sucks. Worst band of this century.

Well, I’m not that into Van Halen (I suppose I’ll get into them eventually), but hopefully he has a full recovery.

420 | 7/28/2009, 4:07 pm EST

hope it heals up fast, then back to rockin.

420 | 7/28/2009, 4:16 pm EST

just to borrow something i think Clapton said not long ago when asked if anything new has grabbed his attention the past 20 yrs or so,and he said no not really.I mean who has the balls to say that.nonetheless VH and Eddie you guys rocked and were original, unlike so much dreck that people call good and new nowadays,Daugherty,Coldplay etc God give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I mean a kit kat.

MR. SPOCK | 7/28/2009, 5:16 pm EST

Well now, we finally see that Eddie is not immortal, or bullet-proof! I am not surprised, as everyone must deal with the problems of aging. Too bad that Eddie didn’t teach his son Wolfgang to play the electric guitar, instead of a boring bass! Now Eddie must realize that Sammy Hagar is better at looking into the future, and planning ahead for the next best thing. So sad, right Eddie? Good luck with the future!

Eddie Van Halen | 7/29/2009, 4:34 pm EST

I was saddened to read the story but glad Mr Van Halen came through it well as he always does. He is easily by far the best guitarists there has ever been.
“Rock On Eddie……”

The Gooch | 7/30/2009, 10:01 pm EST

I’ll take Old School over that New School Crap anytime! If them young punks sit back and learn from the Real Pros. Maybe the get the big picture what rock and roll is all about. I guess it’s summer and class is out.

vhfan | 8/3/2009, 3:46 pm EST

Hope everything heals right the music world needs its guitar hero back!

pill | 8/3/2009, 4:59 pm EST

Thank god those plane windows are strong, or he would not have had a hand attached to a body to be fixed.

Thank God for Rolling Stone.
No, really.

Dave el de Aviles | 8/5/2009, 1:01 pm EST

Great!!
I wish you heal soon, Eddie…

Waiting for new real Van Halen (I mean, w/ David Lee Roth) album. Miss Mike, but if that’s the only choice, it’s ok.

Joe | 8/6/2009, 9:07 pm EST

When I heard about the surgery i had to immediatly had to research to make sure that eddie wasnt permatly disabled. Cant wait to year ya rockin again!

amy | 8/15/2009, 3:30 am EST

I’d rather hear new music than have them tour again. Hope his hand heals well!

Prawit | 9/9/2009, 5:13 pm EST

I had screws surgically screwed into my finger last year. I thought I’d never be able to play guitar again, but I’m back to playing and writing. I feel pretty fortunate to be given this chance.
