Trent Reznor Ends Twitter Legacy By Deleting Account

Rock Daily was saddened to learn this weekend that Nine Inch Nails‘ Trent Reznor deleted his Twitter account, officially ending his tenure on the 140-character social network. What was once among our favorite Twitters to follow is now a “That Page Doesn’t Exist.” Reznor had in the past flirted with permanently absconding from Twitter after receiving a plethora of nasty messages concerning himself and his fiancée, West Indian Girl frontwoman Mariqueen Maandig, stating that “idiots rule” on social networks. However, Reznor eventually returned to Twitter, albeit briefly, to announce plans for the Nine Inch Nails’ final U.S. tour and to recommend artists like Grizzly Bear and Mew.

Reznor’s Twitter page first made headlines when he started an epic 140-character battle with former Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, saying of Cornell’s new album Scream, “You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell’s record? Jesus.” Reznor didn’t just use his Twitter to slam other artists, however, as he helped raise nearly $1 million for a fan in need of a heart transplant using the service as well as gave fans an inside access to upcoming tour dates, projects and his collaboration with Jane’s Addiction.

As Rock Daily reported when Trent originally ditched Twitter, Reznor said, “When Twitter made it’s way to my radar I looked at it as a curiosity, then started experimenting. I thought it through and in light of where I was / am in my career I decided to lower the curtain a bit and let you see more of my personality,” Reznor said. “I watched some of you get more engaged because you started to realize there’s a person (flaws and all) back there, and I watched some of you recoil in horror because I’m not what you projected on me.” In the end, the idiots ended up ruling, and Reznor ditched Twitter without even Tweeting goodbye.

Reznor’s life suddenly seems to have devolved into constant squabbling with anonymous people online. I don’t know what he hopes to accomplish. It’s like watching someone shadow box at ghosts. I was a fan and now consider myself not to be – it ended on the day that he published that Metal Sludge fat girl rant. I’ve struggled enough with my weight and our culture’s unrealistic expectations about it for that to pierce me right to my heart. I can’t support a man who’s so cruel to women. He insulted me personally with that, and I’d never been on Metal Sludge in my life, I’m not a groupie, but I was a fan. No more. I’m not going to pay someone who abuses me. If you look at it in one way, artists have careers at our whim. We pay them to entertain us, but they really don’t have all that much power if the audience evaporates. So, Trent Reznor, you are fired, at least by this one lady who now sees that she is too good for you.

Barbara | 7/20/2009, 7:02 pm EST

To quote Joy Behar,,,

“so what, who cares”

Melanie | 7/20/2009, 7:05 pm EST

Reznor is going to have to get his priorities sorted out and write some groundbreaking, amazing music for me to overlook his misogynist comments as well as his current obsession with retaliating against gossip-mongers.

Another former fan | 7/20/2009, 7:29 pm EST

Christina B summed up my situation as well: Fan for nearly 20 years, not a groupie, not on Metal Sludge, and totally put off my his recent remarks. He criticizes his peers and his fans, but when we criticize, he calls us “unwanted and unremarkable” trolls. Whatever, Trent. I feel sorry for you because you don’t see what you’re doing to your fan base. Some of us were concerned about Maandig’s remarks about drinking and drug-use on Twitter. Just because we care doesn’t mean we’re haters. NIN may be over, but surely you want support in your new endeavors, don’t you? Start acting like it.

Michael R. | 7/20/2009, 7:48 pm EST

NIN fan of many years. I’ve never said this about any artist in my life, but I wish he’d just shut up and play. The more he talks = the less I like him. I’m not a groupie (not even female). I’m not fat. I signed up for Twitter but I don’t even tweet. I just follow other twitterers and read what they have to say. I used to think he was the picture of coolness. Now he and his trashy looking fiancee keep saying stupid things and it’s all over the place. Maybe deleting his Twitter page was a good idea.

MUSIC fan | 7/20/2009, 8:15 pm EST

Closer?
Reptile?
Have you guys actually listened to a NIN album? Have you read an interview with him? Try one from the 90’s. Trent Reznor angry? Whiny? Overemotional? Welcome to 1989.
And for all the women crying that he called some women what they are, he was not talking to you. I am a women and I have body issues but I don’t think that everyone yelling at someone on the internet has anything to do with me. If you are that sensitive stay off the internet. Obviously HE learned that lesson finally.

reprise | 7/20/2009, 8:28 pm EST

How long d’ya think it’ll be b4 he recreates his twitter account and dives back into his old habits of updating his bitch-and-moan rants?

reprise | 7/20/2009, 8:35 pm EST

And it looks like his girlfriend has sworn off Twitter as well, cause her page has the same “That Page Doesn’t Exist” message.

nin sucks | 7/20/2009, 8:39 pm EST

shut up trent no one cares

djshelter | 7/20/2009, 9:11 pm EST

You can still send him messages on myspace!

VirgoLibra8 | 7/20/2009, 10:49 pm EST

reznors twitter was good because he was honest and uncensored, too bad all the trolls on there had to spoil a cool thing.

Lamp thief | 7/21/2009, 12:03 am EST

Yeah, now that leaves him free time to offer career advice to fledgling musicians on the NIN forums. And continuing to take potshots at other artists while he’s at it. Latest targets: Lady GaGa, Coldplay, U2 and Justin Timberlake. It never stops.

He's living in a bubble | 7/21/2009, 1:43 am EST

There are three types of NIN fans: People who truly like the music and respect the man (or used to); Groupies and teen girls who will soon move on to the next “in” group; and Starfu^^kers that will defend him no matter what he says or does (and are regulars on all NIN forums and boards). Trent lives in a bubble of yes-men and can’t handle a place like Twitter where people are allowed to actually wrute what they think without his cronies deleting their posts before he sees them. There are a lot of us who are tired of his antics. This is going to be a hard lesson for him to learn, but he’s dug himself into a hole this time.

Indigo Eyes | 7/21/2009, 4:01 am EST

Just astonishing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone as graceless as this two dollar imbecile. The insults to everyone who is more successful than he is. The empty threats. The instructions for wrist cutting. The reckless, misogynistic rants about fat women & fat titties. Doesn’t he realize that the women he displays such contempt for make up a good portion of his fan base? A lot of them are working overtime to convince themselves that he doesn’t truly feel that way about them. Hard to do when that’s always the first thing he comes up with, isn’t it? It’s taking him less than three months to do permanent damage to a 20 year career with that big stupid mouth of his. Wave goodbye already, moron. It’s more than past time & you will not be missed. Not anymore.

Observer | 7/21/2009, 5:10 am EST

He extracted maximum column inches from his flirtation with Twitter – maybe later he’ll stage a comeback and get still more. Reporting his rants in the “real” press just encouraged him into more and more “look at me” behaviour at other people’s expense. He’s a sad, self-obsessed neurotic.

jmk | 7/21/2009, 6:29 am EST

From what [ saw he needed to grow up, the woman hating his childish threats of violence and at his age. His done major damage to his career just maybe he thought he didnt need nin.com anymore and we are his true self.

Laz | 7/21/2009, 6:43 am EST

You people are pathetic. He wasn’t aiming his comments at any single one of you!

He’s perfectly entitled to give whatever opinions he wants…especially in reponse to some of the hate and vitriol coming from particular so called ‘fans’. Yeah, emails saying ‘I hope Mariqueen dies’, and ‘Go back to using drugs and have an OD’ are really nice things to say, I think TR is perfectly entitled to say some of the (comparitivly mild) things that he has said.

zoetrope | 7/21/2009, 8:06 am EST

they deleted their “real” accounts, too. the ones with a snooty “don’t even think of following me if i don’t actually know you” message.

Glad it's gone | 7/21/2009, 9:15 am EST

I totally agree w/ the “He’s living in a bubble” post. I’ve been a fan of the music since Downward Spiral, and I respected the music this man made. But hearing him whine that people are mean online…wtf? Make some kick-ass music if you are pissed off, don’t Twitter about it. And the NIN forums are terrible- when people complained that JA was closing the NINJA tour, they got attacked. Then, Reznor says “I made a mistake having JA close the shows” and people said “SEE! I told you!”…they got attacked again! The boards are full of yes-men (well, mostly yes-women) and it’s really sad to see. He just needs to be quiet and make amazing music.

colourmatrix13 | 7/21/2009, 10:28 am EST

Well now that the Prince of Darkness Inc. is enmeshed in the proverbial downfall (part1) of Dante’s inferno does he possess the intel &grace to pull himself out? I think not. To much idol worship not enough reality have spoiled the fruits of your labour Trent Reznor

Jen | 7/21/2009, 11:08 am EST

He shoudl have deleted his twitter weeks ago. I used to think he was great! I am sorry be he is killing his 20 years of music. No one needed to know about his bitchy girlfriend, who did not win him any friends. I am sorry he stared being ruse to people for no real reason. A few trolls does not give you the right to be a dick to all your fans.

MUSIC Fan | 7/21/2009, 11:10 am EST

Indigo Eyes- Those women are NOT representative of his fan base. That is an insult. They are crazy and were attacking them both BEFORE their relationship went public. I notice no one has mentioned that.
Oh, it is ok for someone to make racist comments and threaten your girlfriend, but if you try to defend yourself “Oh no, how immature.”
As I said before read some interviews that Trent Reznor did from the 90’s. Then come here and be shocked. He never had any other reputation except the fantasy one you created. He was always a big mouth willing to start fights with everyone, even members of his own band. Where have you been?
Oh, and I hope this helps kill Twitter. It is such a waste.

ex-fan | 7/21/2009, 11:34 am EST

His behavior over the last three months has proven all the rumors I’d heard about him in the past to be true. He’s a dysfunctional human being with some serious issues. He may or may not be a closeted gay, but he DEFINITELY hates women. He is immature, narcissistic, bitter and incredibly shallow. He probably should have ended his career shortly after the release of “With Teeth”. Nothing he’s done, musically or otherwise, has been good.

SM | 7/21/2009, 11:47 am EST

I think that this has all gotten way out of hand. If someone shouts schoolyard remarks at you, perhaps you should ignore them? Acknowledging that type of behavior with an equally ignorant response is just a waste of time. I’m really saddened by all of this behavior. I used to admire Trent’s music, now I find that I can’t listen to it all. The songs I loved seem less relatable to me now, and all that I can think about when I hear them is this fiasco.

mp3 | 7/21/2009, 12:26 pm EST

Well here’s why he left. You all bite the hand that feeds – you beg for his music and shit on him when he tries to be anything but your musical servant. The guy had personal info released online, dealt with vicious personal attacks, and reacted. So he made a mistake thinking he could be a human to you… he will now go back to being whatever it is you imagine he is. That’s the only kind of relationships you ilk can have.

Bakey | 7/21/2009, 12:46 pm EST

Hey Trent, welcome to the Internet.

Indigo Eyes | 7/21/2009, 1:52 pm EST

Those women are absolutely indicative of his fan base, Music Fan. He wouldn’t have a career without the obsessed women who think he needs to be saved. Insulting? Go read the heavily censored nin.com where everything he says & does is analyzed to pieces, everything he does wrong is rationalized & explained and/or applauded. You are absolutely correct, he’s always been a graceless imbecile with a big mouth. But he’s gone too far now, way too far. Nobody forced him to make a fool out of himself on Twitter. You want to talk about biting the hand that feeds? You think you are exempt from all of this hate? Guess again.

AndreaUrbanFox | 7/21/2009, 2:30 pm EST

Being the one at the receiving end of the “plump” “ugly” “pig” and my all time fav “uniformed c*nt”, after seeing him throw tantrum after tantrum, I dare say he is not going to be gone for long. We can hope he does but he wont.

Pete_Ross | 7/21/2009, 2:51 pm EST

Hey mp3, HE released personal info about others first. Shocked and disgusted fans (rapidly becoming ex-fans) released his info back at him. Eye for an eye baby, that’s the way it is.

But anyway, he deleted his account right after his last shows went on sale… JOB DONE. No more free advertising needed on the internet. And all he does now is attack those that pointed out his dubious marketing strategy while the sheeple still follow his every word and think he’s whiter than white.

Trent, be the bigger man, apologise for being a tool otherwise this will never go away.

Chris Brown just apologised for what he did and is already getting some of his fans back. Stop, look, learn, then do the right thing.

If not, then stop “acting the victim” likke a spoilt child.

Be seeing you…

Oh, and MUSIC Fan, Twitter is a micro blog site but unfortunately it’s used by idiots who clearly state “TWITTER IS MY CHATROOM!”

rez is a douche | 7/21/2009, 3:24 pm EST

does this actually surprise anyone? this guy has been a self absorbed douche for years. too bad so many disallusioned kids worshipped him because they thought listening to NIN was some sort of rebellious act. In reality, he’s just trying to make a buck and get attention, same as Brittany Spears.

So What | 7/21/2009, 3:27 pm EST

I don’t care what kind of toilet paper reznor uses or what he says outside of his records. He might be a douche of a human, or not, but he makes good music. Starf*cking goes both ways you know. We’d all have short playlists if everyone we listened to had to be a saint.

kittycatastrophe | 7/21/2009, 3:32 pm EST

I became a fan in ‘91 but this whole Twitter deal has turned me completely off the guy and caused me to take a break from listening to his music. Whining about people getting in your personal s*** after posting the details online is just reverse trolling. He’s not the only celebrity with stalker types, he and his chick are just one of a handful of celebrity couples that fed them a steady diet of personal information. I keep saying celebrity when referring to him because that’s how I’ve started to view him after this Twitter/online stuff. I used to see him as a musician that had achieved a high level of fame but no longer. By the by,for the most part it was the thicka sistas and the emo-cutters that kept that fool in cornstarch and synthesizers over the years-talk about biting the hands that fed you.

Cry me a river | 7/21/2009, 3:34 pm EST

You guys are whining and bitching more then he was! This whole page is bleeding with irony >:(

neotoy | 7/21/2009, 3:34 pm EST

He’s so right, “idiots rule” on social networks. I’ll even take it one further, idiots rule on life. Keep up the good work people.

Ruggy | 7/21/2009, 3:35 pm EST

Trent was never a twit.

Jerome | 7/21/2009, 3:36 pm EST

You guys need to get out of your chat rooms and into the real world. Yes he’s prob a dick in real life. Most of you are douches, so who cares. Enjoy the music whether you like him not. If not, move on and find someone else to harass.

shockwheat | 7/21/2009, 3:40 pm EST

All you need to know about Twitter users and viewers are in the first 4 letters.

Dave T. | 7/21/2009, 3:53 pm EST

So yea, like most of you I’ve been a fan for years. I was so excited to see Trent on twitter; it’s why I joined. I don’t tweet, I follow other people. His line about dropping the curtain a bit was exactly how I felt. I was getting a glimpse into his life. The more I read, the more I cringed. It bothered me that he would dignify these ppl with a response to begin with. I mean this is PR 101. If you don’t acknowledge them, no one will. Instead, he blew up and focused on it more. This is sandbox behavior. I still love the music, but the man is lacking. I never imagined Trent was this immature. Be the bigger man, because before you got your hands dirty, you were. Those people you hate online got exactly what they wanted. You gave them fuel for their fire. I also have to say it is ironic that he left once the tour dates were announced. I saw their “last” performance at Bonnaroo and it was funny how he acted like he just remembered it was be their last show. “You know what I just realized? This is our last show in America.” Really Trent, like you weren’t planning that line for months. I knew a month before would be just from watching your interviews. Not to mention you were full of sh*t when you said it. Drama queen to the max.

Spiral | 7/21/2009, 3:54 pm EST

Reznor and his fiance were harassed and when he stood up for himself, he’s all of the sudden the bad guy? Reznor isn’t the only celebrity on twitter being harassed. What could have been a cool way of the public connecting with artists, is being destroyed by the bitter trolls that are trying to find 15 minutes of fame by running celebrities off twitter.

Stuart Hannig | 7/21/2009, 4:09 pm EST

I hate Reznor. Sound Garden is better. BUt Trent is an idiot and he cries a lot.

I met him once and punched him in the face. He cried like a little girl. True story.

MUSIC Fan | 7/21/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Indigo Eyes- An artist does not need a fan base full of crazy stalkers to be successful. Also the people on nin.com are not indicative of all nin fans just the ones that post on nin.com.

And yes I am exempt from the hate because I do not tell complete strangers who they should marry. I don’t make raciest comments, I don’t call people gold-digger and I don’t bad mouth sick people others are trying to help.

I don’t assume that this stranger who happens to write songs I like owes me anything else. I don’t assume he cares about my opinion about his life, so I don’t give him my opinion.

If he is suppose to be treated like any other person then why are you people defending the trolls? I don’t know any man who would let people say those things to their girlfriends. I seems logical to me what the reaction would be, especially with a person with a history of verbal confrontation.

I don’t think that everyone he yelled at deserved it. But what surprises me the most is 1) how surprised people were 2) Which people they chose to defend, the Metal Sludge girls are not worth defending 3) that people took it personally. Especially since I don’t see any minorities upset that Trent Reznor was told to stick with white women. Or recovering alcoholics who are upset that he was told to start doing drugs again. I find those things offensive because I am not white and I have had people close to me deal with addiction. I would not wish that on anyone. But I guess he is supposed to rise above and be the mature one because… I guess because you said he should.

Pete_Ross- I don’t see the big deal in that. Most people I know use Twitter like IM. Maybe that is why I find it so useless.

Spiral | 7/21/2009, 4:28 pm EST

Trent is my God. I will do anything for him. He can do no wrong.

Dave T. | 7/21/2009, 4:35 pm EST

MUSIC fan – It’s just as much my right to fault him for acting like a child as it is for him to act like a child. He stepped out in the open. It was his choice. I don’t get why a guy with over 500,000 followers would allow the bad apples to ruin it for him. He got sucked in an spit back out because he let it happen. This is his failure. I’m not defending the jackasses who attacked him, I’m simply pointing out he could have chose the higher road. He didn’t, end of story.

Duh | 7/21/2009, 4:40 pm EST

He has a myspace right? Does everyone on there send him happy thoughts and praise? He acts surprised by the “idiots” he found on a social networking site. If he truly didn’t know that before, he is just as much an idiot.

Swingline | 7/21/2009, 4:40 pm EST

When you’ve earned a “legacy” for something as worthless as Twitter, you know you’ve done wrong somewhere along the way.

anon | 7/21/2009, 4:41 pm EST

The bottom line: celebrities and twitter are a bad combination.

Dave T.- I think he should have ended his twitter along time ago and I said he has always been over emotional and whinny. However, the majority of people here and elsewhere are acting like his behavior was THE MOST TERRABLE THING EVER and COMPLETLLY UNFORGIVABLE. He had a flawed human reaction because he is a flawed human. Nothing more, nothing less. People put him on a pedestal that his previous behavior should have told them he did not belong on and then they were surprised and insulted when he failed miserably.
He was not pedaling himself to little kids. He was not Adam Lambert, saying he was a role model. He was just some guy writing songs about how he hates everyone. Surprise! He was not lying.

ex-fan | 7/21/2009, 5:50 pm EST

@Music fan

Guess we agree on one point: when someone shows you who they are, believe them.

Dan | 7/21/2009, 5:59 pm EST

Is MUSIC FAN Trent?
I am sorry Trent music is great, but he has acted like an idiot. He should be nicer to his fans. I saw that ninja tour and he was so crappy. I say this after all so seeing light in the sky tour (and I loved it). Why is he touring again? For money right?

Indigo Eyes | 7/21/2009, 7:18 pm EST

Of course a musician does not NEED crazy obsessed fans to be successful.

But Trent does. Whether you admit it or not, a huge portion of his fan base is indeed, obsessed female fans who “understand” him & want to save him. The reason so many of them are acting out is because he turned out to be just another retarded rock singer with a taste for women who look good in a mini skirt but have an IQ in the lower double digits.

And he turned out to be a flaming misogynist too!

As for everything else, I don’t want to hear it. He made the decision to put his personal life on public display & he knew perfectly well what was going to happen. He set his fiancee up for the abuse she’s been getting. He knew what would happen to her. He knows better than anyone what kind of female fans he’s got. And before you start telling me that he didn’t, I’d remind you that this isn’t the first time a girlfriend of his got a target hung on her. It isn’t even the second. He knew. It’s a little late for him to cry about all the bad people who say mean things to him. It remains to be seen how much damage he’s done to his real true love which would be his career but I’m betting it’s massive. He’s crapped on a whole lot of people, all of whom will enjoy watching this go down. He’s got it coming in spades.

warped reznor | 7/21/2009, 7:33 pm EST

Wise up. He has ALWAYS been like this. No phantom woman broke his heart -as if he had one. This is HIM. Filters off. No lip quivering or inner pain. He’s out for blood with anyone who displeases him, criticizes him or just gets in his way.

Nobody gives a shit if somebody stole his teddy bear when he was a kid. He’s a 44 year old man. He & only he is responsible for what he says & does. Nobody is manipulating that man, least of all dumb little Mariqueen. He’s out of control. The amount of damage he’s done to the real love of his life which would be his career is yet to be determined. But I bet it’s huge. He deserves every last bit of it.

pedersen | 7/22/2009, 7:44 am EST

Maybe he acts childlish and so what? He’s not perfect, he’s human – you’re not, then? Anyway it’s his music that counts and he’s one of the best musicians out there. And I can’t really see how his fan-base can consist of hysterical women, I just attended two of his shows in Europe and something like 95 per cent of the audience were male.
And even if he criticize other musicians, which is not-so-nice (but he is absolutely right about Cornell, when one thinks of his Soundgarden days, he ridiculise himself)but, on the other hand he tries to help less known bands with their careers (like Mew, great band) which is very nice of him.

Bill Williams | 7/22/2009, 8:11 am EST

I think Trent has finally lost his mind. He is a grown 44 year old man who instead of doing productive things in his life by now, is doing the most stupid childish things he can think of. Oh for the love of god Trent give it a rest. We really dont care what you do any more, you are your most worst enemy. I’m sorry but your whore is just a child her self, with nothing to do in life but follow toy around like a puppy. If your this old and still have abandonment issues you need help. It took you what 3 months to ruin 20 years of your life in music. And I know you worked really hard at it. And it seems like as soon as you finished listing your tour you quit twitter, which seems like something you would do. You need to go home and find your self cause this new guy is an idiot. Now you are getting drunk. Everyone I know was so proud that you did “With Teeth” and stayed sober, and now this.

Anonymous | 7/22/2009, 9:28 am EST

I have no idea why everybody here is acting like a saint and calling Trent out for acting like your typical douchebag.Really, this whole thread full of comments is full of irony and hypocrisy.

First of all, I see no reason as to why his behaviour should affect your opinion of his music. Unless of course, you put him on a pedestal as some sort of ‘God.’

He’s a human, just like you and me..so why should he be expected to act any differently when people attack him and his girlfriend? Would you respect him more if he bent over and let the Trolls give it to him up his ass? If anything, he’s living up to his old ‘role’ of being a whiny/bitter man with quite a bite.

Secondly, the hypocrisy. I am going to go ahead and guess that most of all of you would react in the same way when you are trolled, spewing forth insults…hell, most of you are doing it now, calling Trent a whiny douchebag because of he chose to ‘bite’ on to trolls such as AndreaUrbanFox – who most likely think they can make a career for themselves out of making celebrities look like retards (i.e. think they are ‘edgy’ journalists of a sort) when celebrities embarass themselves just fine by themselves. Truth is, he is no more immature in his overreactions then any of us who have replied here.

you ALWAYS forget to mention that you were the one who publicly insulted his fiancé before he called you out. you and your “friends” are human waste, that’s all. some months from now, nobody will remember you, never forget THAT.

Charlie | 7/22/2009, 11:28 am EST

HAHAHA I find it hilarious there is an entire article about this!!!

Linda | 7/22/2009, 11:42 am EST

I love trent but I did not care to see the men behind the curtain. I was happy when he would play music and spoke a bit. Not when he stared being a jerk.
I agree that him and his fiance did gget attack but she called people fat and ugly also. She is a no body and should have stayed out. The problem is that he was been talking crap about hsi fans for years. They feed him. He should be nicer to them. That said I am still a big fan of the music which is the only thing that matters at the end. It is sad that he will not tour again, but I am glad he will keep making music.

AIRic | 7/22/2009, 12:01 pm EST

Reznor’s words were in response to some pretty horrible comments. Racist comments (The one I recall of the top of my head is “slanty eyed chink bitch”) were directed at the person he loves and he acted as most people would in that situation. I wish he hadn’t but only for his own mental well-being. He let people get to him, but I think he acted accordingly. You can’t sit there and poke at someone like that and then act surprised when they go off.

Some of his comments may have been cruel, but people need to realize that they were directed at a select group, and that group deserved it.

blah | 7/22/2009, 12:50 pm EST

He quit because it didn’t do what he hoped it would. That is, SELL RECORDS.

“Idiots” are why anyone knows his name. He should have kept his crap to himself because what he revealed is that he’s a horrible person.

Good riddance.

Mere R | 7/22/2009, 2:51 pm EST

It’s about time he’s gone. All he did was attack people on Twitter. It’s bad enough he does it on his own site, but to tell people who to committ suicide, calling people fat, telling people he was going to hit women (punch them in the tits..etc..etc.).
He needs a doctor to get him back on the medication. Dump the whore and move on back under his rock.
Twitter didn’t destroy NIN…Trent Reznor destroyed NIN.

FormerNINFan | 7/22/2009, 3:05 pm EST

The thing that started all of this was Mariqueen’s TMI posts detailing her s*xual activities with Trent. She wanted to stick it to his femame fans, and she went straight to Twitter. She’s no innocent victim.

To FormerNINFan -

I thought it began when Maniqueen started posting on Twitter photos of random people (woman in Ugg boots, elderly taxi man, Yanni T-shirt woman) and made fun of them and saying ugly things about them. Then, all of her LA friends started tweeting about these random people. Maniqueen would take cell phone photos of people she didn’t know off the street, at airports, at NIN concerts then post the photos on the internet and write ugly things about them. What kind of person does that kind of hurtful thing? She is as sick as Reznor.

Just so you know | 7/22/2009, 4:48 pm EST

His constant diatribes against his fan base has made me wonder if he remembers who pays Mariqueen’s and his own bills. This is like going to your boss and telling him off-who hands you your paycheck at the end of the day? I know he is in Love-but Love doesn’t pay the rent when you are famous: fans do. I agree with those who wrote that he has no idea of the damage he has done to his fan base.

I have been a NIN fan for 15 years, and also teach teenagers. Sometimes when your fans (or in my case students) become combative it really messes with your self esteem and u feel like u want to walk a way, then u have a really great day and it makes everything seem in place and worth while. I think Trent really needs a “Good Day.”

Tara D. | 7/22/2009, 8:20 pm EST

Some of the comments posted here are NIN-lusional. Reznor is not God. And no one cared to attack his bottom of the barrel girlfriend until SHE decided to tweet intimate details about their relationship and insult just about everyone–PETA,the obese, and Mexicans to name a few. But of course you didn’t bother to read that, right, because it’s all about racism based on her ethnicity. Fuck you.

mrrockstar | 7/22/2009, 9:10 pm EST

He just deleted his Twitter account, it’s his right to do so, don’t get your panties in a bunch. As much as you guys think he’s a narcissistic prick, he’s given a lot back to the fans in the last few years.

He just fell into a classic scenario of trying to please everyone but ending up pleasing no one.

Move on…

Michael Kayne | 7/22/2009, 10:05 pm EST

Trent is just a self-absorbed ******* that hasn’t done anything relevant in over a decade and even when he was good he was just even more full of ****. Yeah, that metal sludge contingency is who buys your albums and pays your bills Trent… not all girls can be anorexic enough to appear in Playboy and spread their legs for everyone to see.

Michael Kayne | 7/22/2009, 10:07 pm EST

BTW, I am not a female who would be jealous of his skeezer GF. I’m a late thirties triathlete who had his fun watching Trent almost 20 years ago and saw him first-hand… yes went backstage etc. and saw the self loathing and hate that fueled his music up close and personal. After all that time he is either faking that stuff for money or, well… either way he deserves his fans vitriol because it is what he used to beg for… and dish out.

Destroyer | 7/23/2009, 12:20 am EST

But idiots rule everywhere, not just on the internet. Most people learn to ignore the people they don’t like in both of these worlds.

I’ve been a NIN fan forever. The guy has made some of my favorite music (except I hate the long, boring noise intros he tacks onto everything). Disappointed that Trent Reznor used Twitter to put down other specific people, and is now saying he’s out of social networking because when people say bad things about him online he can’t handle it. Hypocritical.

The “farewell” tour thing is pretty melodramatic too. What’s next, announcing that he’s leaving Van Halen?

a giant slor | 7/23/2009, 2:10 am EST

I’m laughing at all the NIN fans here who are butthurt because they think Reznor called them idiots. The fact that you’re all whining pretty much proves him right–you’re calling yourselves out. The smart fans think he’s right to kick Twitter and all the idiots to the curb.

AndreaUrbanFox | 7/23/2009, 6:30 am EST

@ anonymous

Nope I did not. That has been covered on my last blog regarding Reznor leaving Twitter and it was also covered by @fredgarrett in his blog, which I also provided a link to from my blog.

Steve Meyer | 7/23/2009, 8:49 am EST

Trent has been really nasty to fans through the site – e.g. not honoring backstage passes he gives out, then blasting his disappointed fans when he doesn’t show up – telling them to ’stop fucking whining’. Then of course he goes off and whines to the internet with some expletive laden rant about how his iPhone app gets rejected.

His behavior on the site – from an outsider’s point of view – was really uncalled for. I bet Ashton gets tons of hate but he doesn’t rise to it, and show the world that he really doesn’t give a shit about the people who’ve made him. Some of his fans were really upset when he suggested fat girls should kill themselves.

Samy | 7/23/2009, 12:30 pm EST

Trent on Twitter was cool at first, because you got to hear things straight from him, and it gave everyone a little glimpse of who he is. When he announced his engagemnt, I figure right on, everyone deserves to be with the one they love. I admit that I formed a opinion of her just from reading her flakey tweets, but I never said anything bad about her to anyone, its really noones business what they do in their spare time. I must admit that my opinion of Trent completely changed after the Save Eric campaigne started. I felt it was such a self serving act, it was like he did it to save face since he had just put his foot in his mouth with insulting a bunch of fans then went off twitter for awhile. It was a nice charity act, but just a act all the same. Then it seemed like he was having a mid-life crisis hardcore. It was horrible but facinating to watch at the same time. Attacking fans, attacking anyone that questions any of his actions, the non- farewell farewell tour, the bad concert reviews, he just lost it and it is so sad that he let a couple of jerks get the best of him. I love all his old music, but after getting that insiders glimpse into the man himself, I can’t say that I will support anything he does in the future.

Viralrain | 7/23/2009, 12:59 pm EST

CHRIST! People are so touchy and “sensitive” these days. So people talked shit about you and your girlfriend. So Trent and his girlfriend talked shit about you people. Who fucking cares? They are WORDS, they can’t hurt you people, you won’t DIE from them. The fact that people are THIS wound up by all this is…scary.

Steve | 7/23/2009, 1:11 pm EST

Trent is a good dude with a good heart. He is a funking human being too. All of you NIN fans who are upset with him being happy, healthy and engaged and are pissed he isn’t in a world of angst still are the true losers here.

People TORTURED him on “Twitter” which is the stupidest funking thing to begin with. It was cool when he and Rob posted pics updates on what was going down but the constant bantering of idiots finally set Trent off and it was all well deserved. So F*CK off and let the man be happy. You should be happy he is happy. If you’re not I hope you stay as miserable as he once was forever.

Kittycatastrophe | 7/23/2009, 1:19 pm EST

“It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it to be true.”

I do feel a little bad for him in that his Internet/personal/professional f-ups are playing out to 100s of thousands of people. On the other hand he did push “enter” before taking a deep breath and stepping back from the rants heard ’round the ‘net before launching them. I said it before and I’ll say it again, the need to keep people’s eyes on you via Twitter causes some to say and do things they otherwise would have thought about before hitting “enter”.

AndreaUrbanFox | 7/23/2009, 1:38 pm EST

Charlie Clouser's Cat | 7/23/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Trent’s not “engaged” nor happy….and that wasn’t ever anyone’s issue, if that had’ve been the case. He and that Dude he’s “engaged” to know they started trouble, but when it was thrown back at them, they couldn’t handle it.
Not only that, he was made to leave Twitter. He didn’t leave because “silence” is calling, or whatever ridiculous “last message” he gave. Trent is a nasty human being who lives to humiliate and cause attention to anyone who dare say anything that doesn’t praise him as their Lord and Savior. He’s a nutcase and a horrible person.
Twitter was nothing but a marketing ploy for him…first, he calls attention to himself talking Cornell’s album….then the April Fools prank, then the ridiculous Tweets about “being in love” with the tranny–that’s still dating her band boyfriend by the way–THEN, calling attention to people on Metal Sludge because they were on to his games…Oh and the biggie…closing his Twitter account because number one he’s been such a freakin Troll on there, they told him to stop or leave…and ALSO, notice how the account goes on the day presale tickets come out?? Twitter served it’s purpose for him…..
All of you sheep can pretend everyone drove him away, but you know as you touch yourself at night to TR’s pic, that he used you and THREW YOU AWAY….Again.
kthnksbye.

Big rock mag. why do you allow ppl to leave these comments? Trent on twitter was really cool. to bad a few ppl with some serious mental/emotional issues had to go and eff it up..

Anonymous | 7/24/2009, 9:44 am EST

I am so relieved Trent’s twitter account is gone. It was like a train wreck, seriously. I’ve been a fan since day one but honestly all the “in Love” tweets were quite alarming. I mean come on, they get engaged after 2 weeks. I don’t understand how a man of his age would put such intimate details of his life out there like that. The both of them sounded like two knit wits. I so hate saying this but twittergate has affected the way I feel about the music now, and I HATE that! We all want happiness for him, right? But let’s be honest here, how long can a relationship like that last? I feel all those “in love” tweets are gonna come back one day and bite him in his ass.

CH | 7/24/2009, 10:05 am EST

I am happy Twittergate has ended. It was a total trainwreck, you wanted to look away but just can’t. I find it shocking a man of his age would post such ridiculous tweets. It was so cool at first to get a glimpse into his life because prior to Twitter he was a such a mystery, ya know? It personally went downhill for me when Mariqueen entered the picture. I’m not going to bash her, no one should. No one knows her and some of the things being said are extremely disrespectful. BUT they let the whole world in and when some people didn’t embrace seeing that side of him, he couldn’t handle it. Again, I would think a man of his age would think a little more before hitting that “enter” key. Honestly, they get engaged after what 2 weeks? We all know the statistics on marriage. All of the knit wit “in love” tweets are gonna come back to bite him in his ass.

Kim Molien | 7/24/2009, 10:49 am EST

Aeon a Muse | 7/24/2009, 4:22 pm EST

1. Trent Reznor’s “private life” was still private until Mariqueen and her band mates made it public.

2. I believe the racist spammer who broke the news of their “relationship” on Twitter was in fact an impatient Mariqueen drumming up publicity for herself and her band since Reznor would not publically acknowledge her.

3. I believe Reznor actually thinks he is in love, though I doubt Mariqueen is. It’s pretty obvious she’s still in love with someone else (France Ten?) and is using Reznor for the publicity and free meal ticket.

4. Everyone is in the wrong in this Twitter situation. The trolls for attacking Reznor and Mariqueen. Reznor and Mariqueen for feeding the trolls and acting like immature trolls themselves. Reznor’s “sheep fans” for encouraging Reznor and Mariqueen’s behavior and attacking people on their behalf.

5. Twitter is not “broken”, Reznor just doesn’t know how to use it correctly.

6. West Indian Girl will never been taken seriously by the music community as long as Mariqueen is in the band. Mariqueen’s lust for stardom has basically ruined the careers of two bands.

7. For a man in his 40’s Reznor still has a lot of growing up to do.

8. Rob Sheridan should have been the one accepting that Webby award. He is truly the master mind behind nin.com and all the cool things available there.

9. I think people went a little too far when they started attacking the #ERIC campaign. It really didn’t matter what Reznor’s goals were. If he was doing it from his heart or for the publicity, something good did come of it, it raised some awareness about how broken the healthcare system is and it did comfort a dying man and his family. Though, I think the person who asked about what will happen with the funds left over since Eric sadly passed away is in the right for asking about it, though they could of asked in a more respectful way.

10. I think Reznor was just as freaked out about his “sheep fans” and “unstable obsessive fans” as much as he was about the trolls and the people disagreeing with him. Having to deal with both is probably why he left Twitter.

11. Reznor used to seem like a shy, intelligent, witty, nerdy kind of guy; especially now that he was sober. But all I can see now is an immature man with a misogynistic attitude. So yeah, you’re darn right Mr. Reznor, I am highly disappointed that the “image” I projected onto you is not the man you seem to be!

Does Trent know how to tell the truth anymore.

I don’t know what amuses me more, people trashing Reznor and Mariqueen, or the people feeding into and somehow defending the TRASH that people sent to them.

Yes, Mariqueen instigated a LOT of the fight, but jesus christ they started sending racist comments to him, and damn right I would have trashed the crap out of them, especially if they are fat 40 year old goth wannabes.

And to the people saying he hates his fans, obviously you are far disconnected from the die hard NIN fanbase who worship the ground he walks on simply because he’s so good to his fans. The Slip? Free. Ghosts? Mostly free. Year Zero had an unbelieveable marketing campaign. Tickets to NIN shows are always reasonable no matter how sold out they will be.

Obviously people need to check themselves.

exNIN Abused Fan | 7/25/2009, 8:26 pm EST

Trent Reznor is a FAKE and always has been a FAKE! You are seeing the REAL him – an ASSHOLE. As for the racist comments sent to him – those where from the NIN camp or from Mariqueen NOT HIS FANS since those Twitter SAMMI (what ever the spelling) comments were posted before the public engagement announcement. Most fans had no idea who or what he was dating. GET REAL PEOPLE AND WAKE UP! Reznor blames his fans for EVERYTHING.

Aeon a Muse | 7/25/2009, 9:38 pm EST

@FERABAD

What’s so funny about saying those two things at the same time?

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the meaning of misogyny?
What I was trying to say is that Reznor seems to see women as sexual objects for man’s sexual gratification and seems to base a woman’s worth on how sexually appealing she is to him.

Mariqueen seems to be only interested in materialistic things and being famous. It looks like she is using Reznor as a means to obtain both.

Reznor is using Mariqueen, Mariqueen is using Reznor.
It looks like a very unhealthy relationship, but if that is what makes them happy, more power to them.

@ch
Thanks

My response was to BUTTUGLY who said that there was someone in NIN (past or present) who hates women that get Trent’s attention because he is not handsome, crooked looking, and oddly proportioned even to the point of staring them down as if he wants to hit them because they paid to see sexy Trent and not his concieted, arrogant nobody ass who thinks the crowd is there for him and not Trent and secretely resents Trent and the fans who love him. NIN blows chunks | 7/29/2009, 12:14 pm EST

I believe all of this a joke. Reznor used Twitter to do just what he’s doing now and has always done – pimping out his audience. Reznor is not going to let anyone ride his coattails, especially a no talent person like Mariqueen, and that trashy band – this was a deal made by all of them. Reznor has gotten what he ultimately wanted – more publicity for this tour, and the the resulting “final” shows in the U.S. He’s way too calculating. I don’t think he anticipated THIS amount of bullshit, but he certainly knew it was going to be some bullshit. He knew he was acting in a fake manner with all the stupid Tweets, and feeding Mariqueen what to say via Twitter. His intent was to incite, annoy, and just generally act out in the name of publicity. I don’t know why his fans think he’s above pulling something like this, but he certainly isn’t.

Trying 2 Believe | 7/29/2009, 11:15 pm EST

Trent Reznor has split personalities and has had mind-control and sex slave programming. This is the reason he is acting so weird in the last couple of months.

Karma | 7/30/2009, 10:09 am EST

To the trolls using twitter and Reznor to make themselves famous: what goes around comes around…

Pete_Ross | 7/30/2009, 11:28 am EST

For the NIN fans who believe everything Trent Reznor says…

Bow down before the one you serve,
You’re gonna get what you deserve!

Ever thought that some of these “so called trolls” might be people that Trent has badmouthed in the press and are already famous? No, of course not, they wouldn’t do anything like that.

JJPaul | 7/30/2009, 3:23 pm EST

Make no mistake about it HE IS STILL ON TWITTER! Everyday there are new troll accounts being set up by him.

AndreaUrbanFox | 7/30/2009, 3:56 pm EST

@ JJPaul

I`m not too sure he is TRolling atm. The current TRolls have just been a string of FAIL. Lets give TR the due credit here: he is at least a reasonable TRoll, he isnt a noob like the recent batch

Grow up and move on. | 7/30/2009, 4:13 pm EST

Boo who cry me a river, Trent only cares about Racism and racial slurs if it’s directed at the person he’s dating at the moment, other than that he could careless, because he turns a blind eye too all the racism that goes on on his own web site nin.com and the trolling stalkerish behavior that goes on in the forums. Clean up your own web site first before you can claim racism.

Pete_Ross | 7/31/2009, 9:24 am EST

I’m heading to Sonisphere at the weekend, so I’ll ask him about his multiple accounts when I see him.

Downward spiral to No where | 8/1/2009, 3:50 pm EST

Every since this negative hateful soul came into Trent’s life he’s been headed down a path to nowhere and Fast.

On his last rant he claims things got out of control when the news of his so call engagement broke. The news never broke, from what I heard it was the evil person that he’s going to marry tweeted the information on twitter. And even than no one cared. Their engagement didn’t even make the tabloids,or The Entertainment gossip shows such as Extra, and so on…
NO one cares that he’s marrying What’s her face because she is not an A lister or her crappy band.

Pete_Ross | 8/1/2009, 7:34 pm EST

Trent Reznor will possibly think that all negative comments here are made by just that one person, and each positive comment is made by a collection of at least 1000 people, some contributing to a single letter in each comment.

In other news, DRUGS ARE BAD! They make you see things that aren’t there and not see the things that are RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE.

TROLLS! | 8/2/2009, 7:40 pm EST

Wow – all the Twitter trolls have ben active here.

Hello Andrea! | 8/2/2009, 7:41 pm EST

You are amazing for how low you will stoop.

Trent Reznor | 8/2/2009, 7:44 pm EST

Rolling Stone – I dare you to post IP addresses from all these comments and see where / who they’re coming from.
This is exactly the trolling nonsense I’m talking about.

Trent Reznor | 8/2/2009, 7:54 pm EST

All the comments below are from the Twitter collection of obsessed losers exploiting the fact RS’s comment section has no verification.

You are all a sad, pathetic bunch.

AndreaUrbanFox | 8/3/2009, 4:46 am EST

@ Hello Andrea

Not as low as Mariqueen, pre panties fase.

@ Trent Reznor

Daring a mag to post IPs? How old are you TRoll? 12?

Snarks | 8/3/2009, 4:54 am EST

What a delusional, self-important idiot Trent Reznor is. Just because people don’t like you means they are twitter trolls?

Sorry. Trent, I don’t like you. I think you are a has-been, bloated, attention seeking fool. I think your girlfriend looks like a cheap hooker and acts like an ignorant, gold-digging coke whore. And guess what? I’m not even on Twitter! Do I win a prize?

Snarks | 8/3/2009, 4:57 am EST

Oh and Trent, lay of the ‘roids, dude. Don’t mix well with the bipolar meds.

Katy | 8/3/2009, 7:58 am EST

I’m hoping that after Andrea Urban Fox’s latest blog entry there will at last be some answers to the mystery of Eric de la Cruz and the missing million. Going to be difficult to see Trent Reznor wiggle his way out of that PR nightmare. So sad that poor Eric and his memory have to be tarnished by his representatives’ unwillingness to release simple information. Why does Trent Reznor and the TRoll army get so angry when anybody asks logical questions about this debacle?

Team Andrea all the way.

Melia | 8/3/2009, 8:36 am EST

If I were Trent Reznor I would be more concerned with the fact that my home address in Beverly Hills is freely available on the internet to any psycho with ten minutes and an internet connection, than spending time and energy making up aliases on Twitter to berate fans and calling out trolls. Something is seriously disturbing with this picture.

Kittycatastrophe | 8/3/2009, 9:52 am EST

@Trent Reznor (?)

A Troll loser?

You seeem to find AUF as easily as she manages to get under your skin. What happens if the IP addresses show more than half the comments are from individuals around the country and the world who have nothing to do with the “Twitter Wars”? By the by, just to be clear:

Location: Western PA… and never had a Twitter account, MySpace or Facebook and until a few months ago I used to get NIN info from your dot com. I had to stop because if I wanted to f*** around with pouty pre-teens who eschew personal responsibility I could hang out with my nephews.

Your generalization regarding commenters on RS actually caused me offense…congrats if that was your goal.

Mike Tudor | 8/3/2009, 12:20 pm EST

Explain the “You reap what you sow” comments please Trent. A friend of someone on Twitter got shot and that was the comment directed at them from a user that was either you or MQ.

So tell me, what did Eric do to get what happened to him? What did he sow to get reaped that way?

Joe Cool | 8/3/2009, 12:28 pm EST

Strange one this. First he quits Twitter. Then he goes back on Twitter with countless fake accounts. Then he gets traced to France while making some absolutely awful comments to someone who suffered a tragedy. Then he goes on NIN.COM, makes some serious accusations without posting the WHOLE truth. Then he deletes his fake accounts so he can’t be blamed, or because he was caught out by the Tool fans who traced the IP address. And now he’s still moaning about the one single person.

Trent mate, get a bloody grip! There’s not just ONE person who doesn’t like the crap you’re spouting, and every time you spew more hatred, you’re alienating even more fans.

I’d say either quit or apologise for it. And calm down a bit, you’ll blow a gasket or something.

My advice, light up a doobie and take a load off. Then you’ll probably have a laugh at everything that’s going on.

anon | 8/3/2009, 1:36 pm EST

Twitter. Who cares?

He should collaborate with Neil Young. I’d love to see what would come out of that!

GrowUpReznor | 8/3/2009, 2:14 pm EST

TR, you’re in a terrible state of denial. You still think the criticism of your recent behavior is coming from just a few “trolls,” when your fanbase is eroding before your eyes like an avalanche. These comments are a mere barometer of that fact. Wake up. You misused Twitter, and so did Mariqueen. Part of this is a generational thing – a lot of your fans are close to your age and we simply don’t like the kind of narcissistic online oversharing, baiting and bragging that she did or the bullying that you indulged yourself in. Plenty of us are also sick to death of spoiled celebrities, which you’ve sickeningly proven yourself to be, in direct contradiction of the way you’ve carefully presented yourself in the past. Hypocrite much? You should know Gen X better than to think we’ll put up with that kind of fakery.

As to your bellowing at Rolling Stone and demanding that they publish IP addresses, against their own policy – way to throw your weight around, rockstar. You have enough clout to GET a story in Rolling Stone in the first place, and then you demand that they give up their readers to you because you don’t like the comments? What exactly would you do with that information if they gave it to you? This arrogance is why a lot of your former fans don’t like you any more. Ever since your attack on women, I’ve seen how messed up you are, and the more you talk like this, the more other people see it, too. Most of what you are calling “trolling” is the garden-variety pro and con found on every comments page on the entire internet, and as for the virulence above and beyond that, well, you and M brought most of it on yourselves. What a sad mess this all is. You’ve wasted much of the hard-earned capital of your 20-year legacy in just four short months, over a mean-mouthed bimbo and an idiotic internet war, and you are still too dumb to see that it’s just one more form of your same old self-destruction. Your personal life and career are going down fast, and the only thing that can save you is recovery. Get to a meeting, pronto, preferably one for social networking abuse.

Opportunists | 8/3/2009, 2:19 pm EST

The most pitiful off all the participants are some of the reporters at RollingStone.com who go along with this make believe pr stunt of an engagement by disseminating it to the masses as truth, instead of doing a bit of investigative reporting and realizing this a very public mental meltdown of Trent Reznor and an act of self-sabatoge on Nine Inch Nails. Many reporters will do anything to get famous and get their names out there, even if that means lying to the public and going along with this ridiculous facade and jeopardizing the mental well-being of a very talented artist. Reporting fiction as fact probably has Reznor believing all the lies you print. You don’t care about getting the truth out there nor about Trent. You really are Trent’s puppets in this sham that underestimates your reader’s intelligence. The public has caught on a long time ago that periodicals like RollingStone are not about the real story. Do you realize that the entire NIN fanbase knows this is a prank, and the joke is on you? Reznor made a fool out you and your reputation.

dg | 8/3/2009, 2:50 pm EST

omg it’s so embarrassing. why are all the girls crying now? you all live in your dreamworld, aren’t you? holy christ, people…

all these groupies want him and when they get more pieces of him, they are turning around whining.

wake up and let the people be.

GrowUpRyanToo | 8/3/2009, 2:50 pm EST

I also have something to say to commenter “Ryan” below, though I probably should not dignify him with a response. You are just as repulsive as Reznor has been lately with your comment about “fat 40 yr old Goth wannabes.” Reznor’s past 40, so how old are his first fans? – that’s right, we’re pushing 40 or past it. Using age as an insult is just prejudiced. You could learn a thing or two about Goth from us – we’re not wannabes, we invented it. The last of the Boomers and first of the Gen X’ers were the first punks and Goths – heard of Siouxsie, The Cure or The Damned? The term Generation X even comes from Billy Idol’s old band – he was friends with the Sex Pistols. Your ignorance is amazing. As to fat, well, again, that’s just stupid prejudice, and how can you or Reznor tell what anyone looks like online, anyway? You’re both just too dumb to come up with a better comment than that grade-school throwaway – it shows your real emotional age very clearly.

ShakenAndSad | 8/3/2009, 3:03 pm EST

Trent, your own family is worried enough about you to post some of their concerns online. Please get help.

AndreaUrbanFox | 8/3/2009, 3:16 pm EST

I have doubts the Trent Reznor that commented here is the real Trent Reznor. Not once he used the words c*nt and pig and that is unlike him. But if it is, it goes to show the guy is still eStalking me…making him a sad loser. Also, if his intention was to defend himself of whatever, it backfired so bad I`m actually feeling sorry for him. It must be hard to come to the end of one`s career and go out so disgraced, unloved and looking like an ass…then again he IS an ass-clown…that skid mark on society and the music industry collective underwear. This lil man with delusions of tall should say sorry to every single person he offended, openly on nin.com call off his NINtarded psychofans and tell them off for going around making death threats (failure to do so implies he agrees with his minions making death threats),he should explain himself as to what his real involvement was in this Eric fund malarky, should marry his trashy geisha and fade into blissful obscurity where both of them belong. And if anyone here is at all interested in knowing how all this circus started just go read my blogs on WordPress username AndreaUrbanFox…enough said.

The Enigma | 8/3/2009, 3:19 pm EST

Trent’s mad that people are posting anonymously, but the one person he’s got it in for the most is Andrea Urban Fox, who isn’t anonymous here or on Twitter, MySpace, etc. Hmmm. What a paradox. If we’re anonymous, he gets mad and if we aren’t anonymous, he gets mad. I guess Reznor’s just always right.

Gibberish | 8/3/2009, 3:25 pm EST

Trent has invented his own language: Trentrish. It consists of garbled half-truths in a dialect only he can understand.

BNAK | 8/3/2009, 3:26 pm EST

This is the YEAR Trent will be a ZERO. Cause we are WITH TEETH.

Does DG Stand for Dumb Guy? | 8/3/2009, 3:54 pm EST

To commenter DG – The wizard called. He’s got a brain ready for you.

Violator | 8/3/2009, 4:11 pm EST

There’s still some question out there as to whether Reznor willingly deleted his account or whether Twitter “asked” him to because of his many terms of service violations. He posted personal info online of people he was squabbling with and then created multiple anonymous accounts whose only purpose was to insult those same people. I guess rules and netiquette are only for us common folk.

Lawyered Up | 8/3/2009, 4:13 pm EST

If Rolling Stone published my ISP or released it to Reznor, I’d sue them and him.

AndreaUrbanFox | 8/3/2009, 4:15 pm EST

@ Violator

I have been told by a reliable source he was approached by twitter and asked to tone down. He rebuffed asking them to ban me and a few others and as this didnt happen he deleted his account. I wrote about this on my blogs

Violator | 8/3/2009, 4:34 pm EST

Andrea, thank you for your reply, but I don’t take your blogs or posts as the final authority on this situation. I think you’ve got a mix going on of some excellent points, some shaky ones and some ulterior motives – it’s true that Reznor’s been unhealthily focused on you because of your standing up to him, but you’re also obnoxiously exploiting the situation. You’ve got your own outlets on Twitter and your blogs, so please don’t hijack this comments page for your own self-promotion. I commented as I did because I think it should be brought to Rolling Stone’s attention that they may not have the real story, or they’ve got only part of it. They’re professional reporters, and this is turning into a big story – the winner of the Webby Artist of the Year Award can’t even function on Twitter.

Advice to the Epic Fail | 8/3/2009, 5:01 pm EST

From the Wall Street Journal: “…seemingly small incidents can quickly spread into bigger PR problems via the Web.”

Trent, read and learn – you’re creating damage rather than controlling it.

I can’t post a link here, but here’s the headline to search for on WSJ:

For Companies, a Tweet in Time Can Avert PR Mess

Kittycatastrophe | 8/3/2009, 5:08 pm EST

@ Violator:

Thank-you.

Paul Heller | 8/3/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Well I see Reznor is at it again. Whining like he claims his fans do. For someone who keeps threatening to stay away from the internet, he sure does do a good job of posting all the time. Irony at it’s finest. He brought all this upon himself, his idiotic tweets, his attacks on people who made him who he is today.

As each day goes by, another ring is added to the Reznor/Mariqueen circus. Instead of threatening to leave the internet and go in the “real world”, Reznor just do it already. Leave people alone. He is so hypercritical. Reznor hates the people going after him, yet he turns around and does the exact same thing. Two wrongs DO NOT make a right.

Mark Lancaster | 8/3/2009, 5:31 pm EST

This might be why some of us don’t trust or respect Trent Reznor right now as a person. Trent has been bitching and moaning his way through this current tour. There have been times when I’ve thought maybe he’s being treated too harshly, but then I read comments by people who knew him or were acquainted with him, and most of them say he’s always been an ass, and that fans are just seeing it for the first time. He’s the one who can’t stop broadcasting his personal business on the internet. I used to listen to his music. Now I’m not planning on attending any of the shows or listening to his music ever again.

Crazy Handful of Nothin' | 8/3/2009, 5:32 pm EST

LOL at all the people who think that was really TR. Are you really that gullible? It’s also cute to see the same handful of trolls obsessively cutting and pasting their comments to every Reznor related article on the net. Grow up!

HearHear | 8/3/2009, 5:33 pm EST

Well said, Paul Heller. Trent got his feelings hurt when someone criticized him? Well, maybe now he knows what it feels like to be Marilyn Manson, Fred Durst, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell…

xoxokimm | 8/3/2009, 5:58 pm EST

Not five, six.

Daniel Schuyler | 8/3/2009, 6:04 pm EST

Have to be honest, I stand by my opinion that Nine Inch Nails has not been relevant to anyone outside of the tech crowd since the late 90’s. And to be honest, this really sounds like a fit he’s throwing more than anything else. Fans called him out on his foolishness and now everyone is fat. He’s a child. An old immature child. Nobody is mad because he got engaged. They’re mad because he’s acting like an a**hole.

Mistaken Identity | 8/3/2009, 6:08 pm EST

@Crazy Handful of Nothin’

Maybe you’re not you, either.

Seriously, would Rolling Stone let someone call themselves “Trent Reznor” if they weren’t? This isn’t just a blog.

Rolling Stones better not give | 8/3/2009, 6:11 pm EST

“Lawyered Up | 8/3/2009, 4:13 pm EST

If Rolling Stone published my ISP or released it to Reznor, I’d sue them and him.”

Rolling Stones better not give in to This person’s stupid Dare Demands and listen to “Lawyered Up”. I don’t know if this person is Trent Reznor or a fake, just seem to be a fake to me cause I can’t imagine him or anyone asking for such information, but Rolling stones still better not release any of my information on here or no where else. They better stand up to him to Reznor cause if they don’t I’m suing the hell out of them. People are crazy and will do anything these days. It would be like being raped and someone telling your rapist where you live. If any of our Ip information gets out, location, name etc… and one of us is harm mentally, physically or whatever the case may be, look out cause someone will be in big trouble.
Rolling Stones, Do not give in to him.
I also heard that it was other celebrities that quietly reported him to twitter and not the common folks that had them to approach him, it could all be rumors. I’m not sure if it really happened like I said it could all be more here say and rumors.

Violator | 8/3/2009, 6:15 pm EST

@Kittycatastrophe

You’re-we lcome. Someone had to say it.

MG Siegler | 8/3/2009, 6:22 pm EST

Trent Reznor can’t take being a celebrity. lol. His current whining seems to indicate his emotions are pretty fragile. Otherwise he would ignore criticisms. I think his rant is a little much. Ranting on popular things get you free publicity. Celebrities are like banks: they want all the benefits of a capitalism, but when the shit hits the fan they want someone to “fix” it for them. If you’re popularity is contingent upon the spread of information via rapidly updated social networks, but those social networks allow free speech, well… I guess…cope! I guess twitter is Trent’s “downward spiral”.

Joan Cootes | 8/3/2009, 6:33 pm EST

I’ve read a few of these comments and I’ve got to add some of my own. Trent, grow up!!! You’re 44 years old for chrissake!!! Why did you get engaged to that kid? And how long had you known her before you were engaged? One report said 9 days. Marry in haste, repent at leisure, boy, and you will be repenting!!! Serves you right!!! (For anyone interested, google images of mariqueen maandig and see what comes up. She’s a real lady, that one.) Wait a minute, I think I know what’s happened. The very slutty mariqueen has him wrapped around her little finger!!!! Every time he opens his mouth, her words come out. That’s what it is!!! One of the previous comments here says she openly drinks, smokes and does other drugs. He’s engaged to THAT???? (I wonder if he really knows what she’s like, either she hides her true self from him, or he’s so blinded by what he thinks is true love that he doesn’t care.) He’s been fighting his demons and staying sober for the past 8 years and now he’s engaged to a “lady” who could quite easily drag him down to her level, only this time I think he won’t be so lucky, this time I think it will kill him. She’ll drain him dry, physically, mentally, emotionally, financially. And now, she’s got him shitting all over his fans. He’s forgotten that we (yes, believe it or not, I am a NIN fan) put food on his table and keep a roof over his head. Trent, you need us more than we need you. We can quite easily move away from buying your merchandise and worshipping and idolising you. (Speaking of merchandise, I have a feeling that she will have a say in whatever, if any, music Trent writes and releases from now on, so I think the quality will deteriorate quite dramatically.) Trent, I used to think you were someone special, now I just think you’re a sad lonely middle-aged man with a mid-life crisis. You’re a fool. As I said before, you imagine yourself in love with this creature, this “most amazing woman in the world” as you call her. Boy, you don’t know the meaning of love!!!! A relationship isn’t just sex, sex is such a small part of any relationship. There’s companionship, friendship, having the same goals and aspirations, growing old together. I don’t see this female growing old with you, she’ll look at you one day, see who you really are, and find someone closer to her own age, all the time grabbing everything she can and taking it with her. Wake up and smell her cigarette breath, boy!!!

Cough Syrup | 8/3/2009, 7:30 pm EST

I was referring to Marilyn Manson.

MyBestFriendIsATwit | 8/3/2009, 7:37 pm EST

It’s also interesting that Trent bragged in his latest nin.com post that he “is friends with” people at Twitter who are important enough to set policy for the company and says that he spoke to them about his concerns with their site, when Twitter may in fact have quietly asked him to go away. Maybe that is the conversation he was referring to? Hah! If so, talk about spinning things your way.

GatherNoMoss | 8/3/2009, 7:40 pm EST

Rolling Stone, your article is biased – you left out the part of Trent’s same nin.com post where he told people how to kill themselves – “cut along the vein, you’ll get better results.” You ARE only presenting half the story, if that much, and taking Trent’s word for it that all of his detractors are in fact “idiots.” Start digging around the web, and you might start to see some other opinions.

Jere | 8/3/2009, 10:41 pm EST

O.M.G what music has come to these days…It’s no longer about heart-felt good music being made anymore…it’s ALL about the lashing out at others including fans…real sad. Sorry but NIN sales plummeted years ago and now even further because what Reznor says and does. His NINJA tour SUCKED in Texas and his new bride is disgraceful. For his so called passion for singing for the people has flown right out the window. I am no longer a NIN fan, and amazingly I am very embarrased to have ever been a fan:(

annoynamous | 8/3/2009, 11:17 pm EST

Well his girl has quit WIG, was to much pressure, which is weird because hes tours almost over. Unless he thought she was having an affair with the bass player. Who knows at this point. See hes so selfish he dosnt want her gone while hes home. Sounds just like him.
