Pearl Jam’s New “Backspacer” Single “The Fixer” Hits Radio

7/20/09, 11:08 am EST

Pearl Jam’s “The Fixer,” the first single off the band’s upcoming ninth studio albumBackspacer, premiered on various radio stations across the country this morning. New York’s RXP 101.9 proclaimed themselves the first station to play the track, debuting “The Fixer” at 7:30 a.m. EST. For those not tuned to their regional FM rock stations this morning, the band’s Ten Club MySpace page is streaming “The Fixer” as well. The song previously appeared as a 30-second excerpt during the MLB All-Star Game last week.

The new single is definitely more radio-friendly than the punk roar of “Got Some,” which the band premiered on The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien, and is fairly comparable to the Springsteen-esque anthem “Unemployable” from the band’s last self-titled record. Where “Unemployable” featured a rallying call of “Oh Oh Oh” in the chorus, “Fixer” has Vedder pounding his fist to cries of “Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah.”

As Rock Daily previously reported, “The Fixer” is likely to feature in that Cameron Crowe-directed commercial Pearl Jam filmed at Seattle’s Showbox in May as part of their deal with Target. While the band had aligned with Target on a retail exclusive deal, both the Ten Club online merchandiser and independent record stores will sell Backspacer, which will officially be released on September 20th. Pearl Jam opened up pre-orders for Backspacer at the Ten Club site last week, revealing the album’s track list in the process. Additionally, the band has offered up a 7” white vinyl single for “The Fixer,” with a b-side of Backspacer track “Supersonic.”

Pearl Jam will hit the road in support of Backspacer — which shares its name with the sea turtle the band sponsored in the Great Turtle Race — starting with a headlining slot August 8th at Calgary, Alberta’s Virgin Fest. Get all the tour dates here.

I thought it was called, “The Giver”? Did someone tell you otherwise?…

Silly RS.

JasonTH | 7/20/2009, 12:44 pm EST

Overall, I’m not that impressed with it. “World Wide Suicide” was a much better single.

Good Song…We’ll be playing the hell out of it.

The Fixer – Like it!

jacob | 7/20/2009, 1:37 pm EST

sounds good. catchy. PJ rarely disappooints. Got some on conan was hard to stomach because the sound mix was so poor.

crazyhorse | 7/20/2009, 2:15 pm EST

So when can I buy it at Best Buy?

Anonymous | 7/20/2009, 3:43 pm EST

Sounds good…I like the direction this band is going…simple lyrics…catchy music…genius band.

Can't Wait | 7/20/2009, 3:52 pm EST

Can’t wait for this band to go away, for good.

Hey Can't Wait | 7/20/2009, 4:10 pm EST

I think it would be easier for you to go away.

Rockman | 7/20/2009, 4:17 pm EST

I really, really like this song! It’s the catchiest thing they’ve done in a long while. While I hear a li’l Springsteen, as RS points out, I hear more late ’70s/early ’80s Bowie influence – which ain’t a bad thing at all. Good stuff!!!

PA | 7/20/2009, 5:00 pm EST

I just listened to this song and its horrible. Pearl jam maybe a pretty good live band but its tough to be a great live band when your studio stuff has sucked since ten was released.

warm and cuddley

Obama | 7/20/2009, 6:12 pm EST

Does anyone care about this band anymore? Every album going back to almost 15 years ago has been the same old tired shit regurgitated over and over. For once, someone needs to tell Vedder to shut the fuck up and go away. But Vedder and this band is too in love with themselves to pull the plug.

Stevo | 7/20/2009, 6:14 pm EST

The Fixer, catchy as hell and has hit written all over it

PJ rules the rock universe still. Tim Bierman is now their guru.

Shabba Ranks | 7/20/2009, 7:22 pm EST

The Fixer is the title of a famous novel by Bernard Malamud. Perhaps the PJ dudes read it.

sirloin | 7/20/2009, 7:27 pm EST

If Pearl Jam were to come up with a memorable song at this point it would almost negate the body of work they have built up over the last 7 albums.
It’s hard to get excited about it but I look forward to the new album and will probably like it.

Greendale | 7/20/2009, 7:47 pm EST

It’s Ok…..you can pretty much anticipate exactly what you’re gonna get from Pearl Jam. Since Yield, Pearl Jam have basically been remaking the same album over & over.

PJlover | 7/20/2009, 8:35 pm EST

all you dickhead pearl jam haters can go listen to your nickelback top 40 music or whatever it is you listen to

PJ Rules | 7/20/2009, 8:51 pm EST

The Fixer is a good car song turned loud with the sun out. Great tune and PJ again sounds new. Great track.

eVedder10 | 7/20/2009, 9:00 pm EST

lol dont worry, give Nickleback about 5 more years and they will dissapear like Creed.. This is a great catchy tune! you can tell its gonna be a radio hit.. By the way, all these PJ haters are just Nirvana Loving idiots (who have no choice but to hate on PJ) and who cant get away from the fact that Kurt No-Brain blew his brains out. That or just Nickleback or Blink 182 fans.. Just saying lol

The Huntz | 7/20/2009, 9:12 pm EST

The Fixer is better than most songs off Pearl Jam’s last album.

PJJ | 7/20/2009, 9:34 pm EST

love the band, but this song is very weak. lacks the depth of most pj songs. we all listen to ‘no code’ and ‘yield’ songs over and over, but i would be more than happy never to listen to this one again.

c | 7/20/2009, 9:36 pm EST

big fan here, really weak effort. this song is going to get old very quickly. not timeless by any means

i have a feeling this is the same douche lol

pj rulz | 7/20/2009, 10:00 pm EST

ha ha yeah those comments do seem kinda similar. back to back within 2 minutes apart and both containing the word “weak” and not worth listening to again… some people just amaze me. This song rocks!!

jiggles | 7/20/2009, 10:18 pm EST

Nice tune! It’s great to hear all the whiners that call themselves fans hating on this great tune. Maybe PJ is cleansing its audience.

Jimmy Gunns | 7/20/2009, 10:22 pm EST

Lifer as a fan of PJ, but The Fixer and Got Some are two of the most awful songs they have ever done. Put this horse out to pasture. I can admit that as a crazed fan.

Vedderpunk | 7/20/2009, 10:37 pm EST

This song’s got a killer hook and kicks a@$!!!!

Pearl Jam are back at it once again…..slaying you fools and making weak bands like Nickelback and Creed look really bad.

mmatthew | 7/20/2009, 10:45 pm EST

cool. I’m looking forward to the new album. I can’t wait to hear brendan o’brien producing for them again.

shithead | 7/21/2009, 12:54 am EST

I love the fixer… so catchy!!!!

Clem Halibut | 7/21/2009, 9:27 am EST

Well it’s certainly no “Foxymophandlemama”

It reminds me of Cherry Coke and makes me shake my hips and tap my feet.

The girls of summer will dance to this one -and that is never a bad thing-

Anonymous | 7/21/2009, 9:49 am EST

Pearl Jam… Now charging $78+ fees for a concert ticket, and exclusive album deals with Target. (please spare me the ‘it will also be released at indie record shops’ BS argument.

Fail!

AS ALWAYS PJ JUST KEEPS PUTTING OUT ALBUMS. PERSONALLY I LOVE EM ALL.
FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE STILL SUCKN 10′S DICK …GO LISTEN TO CREED AND NICKLEBACK AND LEAVE THE TRUE PJ FANS ALONE! THANK YOU AND GOOD NITE!

Eddie Vedder | 7/21/2009, 10:48 am EST

Thank you all for your continuing love and support!

Eric Swartz | 7/21/2009, 11:27 am EST

I am a new PJ fan and these are the two greatest songs I have ever heard!

Zombie | 7/21/2009, 11:54 am EST

Pearl Jam does not care what we think.

Graham | 7/21/2009, 1:46 pm EST

A band like Pearl Jam always creates expectation in the listener. If you go to any music or art or freaking life, for that matter, with some kind of expectation of how something OUGHT to be, well, that’s on you. Too bad. My suggestion to you would be to put your gavel down and just rock out with it. Life’s too short to waste time judging it. Of course, that’s my own personal judgment call, right, smart-ass?

MB | 7/21/2009, 1:58 pm EST

Fixer and Got Some both sound like hits! VS btw I still feel is there best. And most underated is Riot Act. Keep rockin PJ!

I hear PJ | 7/21/2009, 2:26 pm EST

…and think of beer, girls and rock guitars.

Joe Moyma | 7/21/2009, 3:35 pm EST

What do you haters expect? Not every song is an instant classic. This song is good, but it should not be compared to their old material… that’s why it’s new. Personally, I like the direction that Vedder and his bandmates are going. Who wants the same old sound? Cant wait to get the new album.

Anonymous | 7/21/2009, 4:30 pm EST

$78.00 is still a hell of alot cheaper than what most bands charge. Also it’s not 1994 anymore and the industry has changed. illegal downloading has spiked the price of tickets because the road is the only way to make money these days; it’s sad but unfortunatley true.

And for the record, Indie Record Stores and TEN CLUB get aspecial edition copy of “Backspacer” that won’t be sold in Target Stores.

See you out there

Magic Dong | 7/21/2009, 5:15 pm EST

PEARL JAM is MAGIC-

Jonas Brothers/American Idol/Nickelback/Creed/
is PURE CRAP

Sophie | 7/21/2009, 11:01 pm EST

I liked it a lot! Cant0 wait to get the album!

Lato649 | 7/22/2009, 12:07 am EST

at first, i was like….hmmm, i’m really not too sure I like this… kept listening to it over and over….and i’ve got to admit, it’s really grown on me. It’s a different style that the band is working with… almost “happy”, vs sad and angry which they were in their earlier years. go with the flow man, you can’t remake Black or Alive over and over again…

pj pj pj | 7/22/2009, 8:19 am EST

Cant find a better……….band!

Anonymous | 7/22/2009, 12:09 pm EST

Ha Ha…It sounds like someone slipped some Zoloft in Eddie’s Wine.

I like it!!! Great Song

rj | 7/24/2009, 2:18 pm EST

has anybody heard this on the radio. i can’t catch in anywhere – fm – xm – nothing.

lisa | 7/24/2009, 11:42 pm EST

terrible song.. I hope the whole album isnt like this.

Jeff | 7/26/2009, 8:49 am EST

the beauty of pearl jam for me the last 20 years is the eager anticipation for a new album, listening to it for the first time and not quite knowing how I feel about it, and then finally finding myself thinking that the most recent is the best album they have put out. someone else mentioned that with any great artist, expectations are created—its the surprise that comes with each new iteration of pearl jam that makes them great, perhaps the greatest (certainly in my opinion).

Fail | 7/27/2009, 11:44 am EST

Honestly, if you took out the lyrics and just listened to the music you would think this was a Jonas Brothers song. That being said, I think it will play well on the radio.

sdsd | 7/30/2009, 10:35 pm EST

oh man im a lifer pearl jam fan since ten was released and i csn honestly say this song is absoloute shit- i just pray the rest of the album is better

PJ fan | 8/3/2009, 6:29 pm EST

Cameron’s drums sound great, probably thanks to Brendan O’Brien

Tbone | 8/4/2009, 7:34 pm EST

I agree that this may not be the best pj song, but come on, they have been doing this for twenty years. You are never going to get the pj of old back. If they are going to continue to sell albums, they need to expermint some. That is my one word definition of “THE FIXER” an expermint.

If you would prefer to listen to a constipated wantabe, then go buy you some nickleback.

taz quamar | 8/6/2009, 2:41 pm EST

well where do i begin? at first i thought oh gosh PJ have just ruined there reputation..BUT..I went back listened to it a few more times and now think it is possibly one of the most uplifting songs of the summer…..so heck….. PJ became happy..doesnt everyone deserve a little happiness?

DAY | 8/13/2009, 4:26 am EST

FUCK YOU WE ALL LOVE PJ

gowin up pj | 8/25/2009, 8:53 pm EST

Song grows on you. The Fixer is like all thier stuff is a change, but through all their change there’s honest heartfelt emotion. When you feel it live you get it.

Pearl Jam SUCKS *** | 10/30/2009, 5:50 pm EST

Check out the latest issue of Spin mag to see what a douchbag little prick eddie vedder is. The “”badass”" multimillionaire gives everyone the finger with a smirk on his face while the rest of his sucky band smile with retarded expressions. Check it out. It’s good for a laugh and you’ll see what a bunch of FAKES they are.

JEREMY | 11/8/2009, 12:48 pm EST

What do you(agitators) expect from PJ -rockabilly, funk, Hip-Hop? It works, evidently for them and the people who like it and like PJ. Here’s a novel idea – change the station, get out of your buddy’s car, leave the room, etc.,etc! Love it myself!
