Paula Abdul’s Return to “American Idol” Unlikely, Manager Says

What would a Paula Abdul-less American Idol look like next season? That was the question on Idol fans’ lips this weekend after the singer’s manager told the Los Angeles Times, “Very sadly, it does not appear that she’s going to be back on Idol.” Manager David Sonenberg was speaking out to express his disappointment about the slow-moving nature of Abdul’s attempts to negotiate a new contract to remain with the show she’s been a part of since Season One. According to Sonenberg, Abdul has not even received a formal proposal for a contract yet.

“I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful,” Sonenberg said. “I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven’t stepped up and said what they want to do.” Sonenberg reiterated that Abdul would like to remain with the program, and Abdul herself has said in the past that she “can’t be replaced” on AI.

As Rock Daily previously reported, Idol recently re-signed host Ryan Seacreat to a lucrative deal, and seem poised to give Simon Cowell a monster contract when his current pact expires next season. However, Abdul and four judge Kara DioGuardi — who many thought was perhaps brought in to one day replace Abdul — haven’t signed new deals. Season Nine auditions have already begun.

An entire Twitter movement has come out in full force in support of Abdul, the L.A. Times reports, with thousands of Tweets tagged with the trending topic #KeepPaula. Even former contestants like Danny Gokey, Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud and Syesha Mercado added the tag to posts this weekend, helping the #KeepPaula rise up the trending topics section (”Bikini Girl,” however, tweeted that she should be added as the fourth judge alongside DioGuardi).

After the outpouring of support from her fans, Abdul took to her own Twitter to write, “If it weren’t for you, this specific time and situation would feel a whole lot worse! I’m actually moved 2 tears upon reading the enormous amount of tweets showing me your kindness, love,& undying support. God bless all of you!”

It is a shame that the folks behind AE would pull such a stunt, but what do expect? they are playing it for “press”…they will wait til thelast minite nd then come thrught. hanfg in there Paula.
The show is starting to get stale and this is a way to brng it atention, by “payong “paula as such. As for Ryan. Girlfriend u have got your slef a good deal/. You’re such a wenny!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vallo | 7/20/2009, 10:08 am EST

Not a nice way to treat Paula is it? She has been with AI since day one, and deserves better. Everyone tweet #keepPaula.

ArtyChick | 7/20/2009, 10:16 am EST

They should be rolling out the red carpet with money in hand for Paula Adbul. She is the antitheses to Simon. AI has proven with their pocketbook, they can’t afford to lose Seacest or Cowell. Kara, sadly, was a mistake. Go back to the three judge – with occasional guest judge, format. It worked. Meanwhile – they need to adjust Randy’s deal with a clause that if he can’t utter anything other than “it was just a’ight dawg”, “your the bomb”, and “didn’t work for me dude” – his contract will be up and he will be replaced with a much more cost-effective robot or impersonator. AI also needs to be careful – they could be slapped with a justifiable lawsuit based on sex-bias.

Sanchez | 7/20/2009, 10:47 am EST

Unfortunately her leaving can’t even make that garbage any more watchable.

Ryan Seacrest gets a 3 year $45 million deal, but a female can’t get the same. Total BS.

vanhelsing | 7/20/2009, 11:45 am EST

paula should have been removed years ago,she is not a judge of voice that is for sure, every time she appears it looks like she is on some kind of medication, she is a has been entertainer, randy also should be released he does not have a clue when it comes to voice, people like to pretend that they have the knowledge but they do not you need proper judges like they have on dancing with the stars, the network should take a serious look at simon being the creator, producer, and a judge puts him in a serious conflict of interest position because he sold the idea ti the networks does not make him an expert in voice,he also should go,we need new judges, because your show is stale, also many complaints how the auditions are handled,by judges that are arrogant, rude, and not qualified, all you viewers out there wake up to the fact that american idol is becomming a serious let down, and i predict that the ratings will be at a low and a lot of the companies will pull their support.

Con Fused | 7/20/2009, 11:57 am EST

So, do people still watch this ridiculous show? If so, WHY???? We are a nation of morons indeed.

CLeigh | 7/20/2009, 12:29 pm EST

Paula Abdul leaving? There goes the show. I jus’ can’t believe it. She is an integral part of A. I. Either the powers want publicity or have really lost vision of the show. So get on with it a’ready! Put Paula back in that judges chair and be done with it….otherwise I don’t believe i’ll watch much!!!….a lot of folks won’t be watching.

Replace her with Cindy Lauper

thegreat | 7/20/2009, 12:38 pm EST

paula just says good stuff she should go

Anonymous | 7/20/2009, 12:40 pm EST

This whole thing is one big publicity stunt…. She’s be back. They must figure the American public to be dumb. And if i’m wrong, and she isn’t back, American Idol, and life, will both go on.

STFU hater! | 7/20/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Just let this corny-ass show DIE already!

It’s a glorified karaoke contest and has contributed nothing to the world of quality music.

Simon Cowell has just entered into a huge multi-million business deal with Kate Moss and some other dude – he probably knows the show is on life support and is plotting his next project with someone he believes will bring ‘cool’ and taste and edginess.

mary | 7/20/2009, 12:46 pm EST

you should keep paula, she is what make’s the show, she is funny, so just stay the way it has been so far, what makes you think that by changing the people you have now, the show will be so diffdent?

Jennifer | 7/20/2009, 1:05 pm EST

If they were going to replace her, I wonder why it wasn’t back when the allegations came out against her that she had been in a sexual relationship with one of the contestants. Actually, I thought she was never better as Idol judge than she was this past season.

ronald | 7/20/2009, 1:23 pm EST

First off, Paula was already making much less than Simon. I think 2 mill to his 36 mill. Disgusting. And we are hearing he wants much much more. Unbelievable! He is just a judge – doesn’t perform and the same thing with Ryan to make 15 million a year just to say…. and this is American Idol. I know it is the #1 show but in this economy where everyone else is cutting back in actors’ salaries. I hope they do whatever they can to keep Paula.

doobler | 7/20/2009, 1:52 pm EST

“What would a Paula Abdul-less American Idol look like next season?”

Better.

richpee | 7/20/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Paula Abdul is one of the hotest 47 year old woman around. She’s the reason Simon has any showbiz personality at all, if it weren’t for her bantering with him he’d be a dead dog! he’s flat no personailty what-so- ever and she makes him what he is!!!

If they let her go they are shooting themsleves in the foot and the show will bomb! What’s a few million here or there when it comes to the producers…as in Simon’s new cut deal. He’d better go to bat for Paula if he has any smarts at all…he acts like she’s a dummy or stupid most of the time while he has his head up his own ass!

Paula you are my dream lady!!

You can go anywhere and make moooo money do it..move on to bigger and better stuff.

aaron | 7/20/2009, 2:29 pm EST

one less talentless person on such a shitty tv show. how can you have someone judge talent if they have so little????? Hope they just decide to stop production

Shiloh | 7/20/2009, 2:35 pm EST

I hope they dont keep Kara over Paula. Kara was so annoying and didnt really add anything to the show but more annoyingness(not a word). I they were gonna get rid of someone it should be Randy. When was the last time he provided any constructive criticism?

Muffin | 7/20/2009, 2:45 pm EST

Who gives a shit?

ali g | 7/20/2009, 3:41 pm EST

yo dogg. still b d biggest collection of musical illiterates on da planetwit or witout paula. Addy me boy bruno, ryan c cokk needz sum companee. peace owwttt

A Billion Yahoo Email IDs | 7/20/2009, 4:23 pm EST

Beware of 3/4 of what you read on the web, Paula is being victimized by her inside who didn’t like her, and who wanted to go to a karaoke format and then forced it with that butt ugly Adam person, the idea that he rode her good looks and Billboard prowess to the cover of Rolling Stone without a single whisper of a crotch in his photos, everyone knows they give these stars the ability to yank unflattering comments on OMG. Anyway, she was the show, she was their musical credibility, she owned the dance floors with Madonna and Prince in the 80’s, and she should put it all together again and tour, she’d make millions and would bring a lot of happiness to people who didn’t get to see her in the 80’s.

Sunny in California | 7/20/2009, 5:10 pm EST

Oh No. Not that new girl.
That show will not be as good with Paula gone.
I just started watching the show 3 years in and I thought last year was the worst.
That other girl has a voice but not the personality -it will be alful.
I can’t stand that dance show. Hope the director
isn’t tryling to just roll over to it and not care about American Idol. Paula is one of the judges no matter. There goes my show.

Sunny in California | 7/20/2009, 5:12 pm EST

Last years show was the worst. Get rid of the new girl, Paula is part of the team. there goes my show.

coachmaddog | 7/20/2009, 11:40 pm EST

never watched AI and never will. I’m too smart for that. She’s still hot, though.

John Hilscher | 7/21/2009, 12:59 am EST

She’s one major support in the tripod. Kara was an ineffective choice-let her go.

Let’s pay Paula $20 million/year!!!!

Bryan Family, Delaware | 7/21/2009, 8:27 am EST

We have been devoted Idol fans since season one…..If Paula goes, so do we….our family will never watch Idol again.
A.I. is Randy..PAULA…& Simon…

Anonymous | 7/21/2009, 10:38 am EST

I would like to see Paula go because she judges people mostly on their personality not their voice and the is a music contest. I understand that you need the American Idol to be an Idol and someone that kids can look up to but she’s just too nice! I think AI should let go of Paula and Kara. Kara doesn’t have a clue what she’s talking about and she’s annoying as all heck! I’d like to see the American Idol judges be Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and some other girl who can let people down gently but who isn’t too nice and who has experience as a singer because if you’ve never sang you cann’t judge as well and you need at least one of the judges to have experience as a singer!

carollea | 7/21/2009, 11:51 am EST

American Idol should be named ‘the Simon & Paula show! These two play off each other. Their arguing is better than the AI show.

Without Paula the show would not be nearly as interesting. She and Simon play off each other and keep us all interested. Kara can go and they can give the extra money to Paula.
