Motley Crue Bring “Dr. Feelgood,” Classic Hits to Crue Fest 2 Launch

Mötley Crüe gave a loud-and-lewd commentary on health care reform in Camden, New Jersey, Sunday night when they kicked off the opening night of Crüe Fest 2 with a start-to-finish run through Dr. Feelgood to mark the six-million-selling album’s 20th anniversary (read the tales behind the album here). Capping a daylong loud-fest of heaviosity from Godsmack, Theory of a Dead Man, Drowning Pool and the Charm City Devils, the Crüe’s set commenced with spectacle of a sexy nurse pushing some poor soul in a wheelchair across the lip of the stage in front of a black curtain.

(Check out the Crü’s kick-off gig, in photos.)

She then proceeded to inject the patient with with syringe the size of a rowboat oar, and after a piercing scream the curtain fell away to reveal the Crüe blaring the opening chords of Dr. Feelgood’s title track from inside a bright white, stobe-flashed padded cell, dressed in white lab coats. After capping “Slice Of Your Pie” with the coda of the Beatles’ “She’s So Heavy,” the padded cell gave way to reveal a giant, two-story tiled wall backdrop — shades of Pink Floyd’s The Wall — tinted surgical scrubs green. The stage design was no doubt intended to mirror the album’s underlining theme of waking up from a nightmarish sickness (remember, Dr. Feelgood was the notoriously hard-partying Crüe’s post-rehab album), it also served as a not so subtle reminder that we are all trapped inside an oppressive and dysfunctional health care system. Hold you in our wheelchair you can feel our disease, indeed.

Buttressed by a shapely pair of back-up singers in thigh-highs and dominatrix-corsets, the Crüe looked hale and healthy, with Vince Neil rocking white leather chaps, Nikki Sixx sporting a pair of shit-kicking frankenboots, Mick Mars donning his trademark black Zorro hat and Tommy Lee, as per usual, shirtless and graffiti-ed with tattoos. After the B.S.-detecting of “Same Ol’ Situation (S.O.S.),” Lee came out from behind the drum kit to address the crowd (”What’s up, fuckin’ bitches?!?”) and pump them up for the rest of the set (”We got titties!”) before returning to the drums to do what he does best, i.e. beat on things.

Mötley Crüe rounded out Dr. Feelgood’s trifecta of hits with “Kick Start My Heart” and “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away),” dug up metallic nuggets like “Shout At The Devil” and a pyro-blasted “Live Wire” and then closed out Crüe Fest 2 with a lighter-riffic “Home Sweet Home” and a righteous romp through “Girls, Girls, Girls,” their riotous ode to the pole-workers of America.

Set List:

“Dr. Feelgood”
“Slice of Your Pie”
“Rattlesnake Shake”
“Kickstart My Heart”
“Without You”
“Same Ol’ Situation (S.O.S)”
“Sticky Sweet”
“She Goes Down”
“Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)”
“Time For Change”
“Wildside”
“Saints Of Los Angeles”
“Live Wire”
“Shout At The Devil”

Encore:
“Home Sweet Home”
“Girls Girls Girls”

They should bring Crue fest to Mexico… Best band in the world!

Crue | 7/20/2009, 9:48 am EST

These guys can still get it done. Nice write up, wish i ws there.

Love It | 7/20/2009, 10:07 am EST

Gotta love it when junkies (Motley Crue) think they know what’s best for health care in America. Great music btw, but not the brightest of minds. Play your music and stfu about politics, you know nothing.

Jeff | 7/20/2009, 10:33 am EST

A wall tinted green… so, you mean it looked like the album cover? Do a little research.

sounds like a good idea... | 7/20/2009, 10:57 am EST

playing records in their entirety is cool in theory…”slice of your pie” at a shed show?…you’ve taken the wind out of %80 of your audience right there…they are overestimating the importance of this record…it was not dark side of the moon… shout or too fast would be much better.

Reviewer | 7/20/2009, 11:00 am EST

Wow, so the Crue has figured out Health Care? How stupid is this reviewer? I’m just asking, going to Crue-fest for political commentary? the kids are not alright, they are idiots

Red | 7/20/2009, 11:04 am EST

Are you really questioning a Motley Crue setlist? That’s hilarious.

:) | 7/20/2009, 11:33 am EST

Motley Crue? Really Rolling Stone really??

Was there! | 7/20/2009, 11:35 am EST

Great Show!!! Vince sounded good and Mick was on point! Effects were amazing!

Steve | 7/20/2009, 12:14 pm EST

I like this full album concert format which seems to be catching on. First Aerosmith and now Crue. I’m not a massive Crue fan or Aerosmith fan for that matter but playing an album in it’s entirety takes balls. Especially when it’s an album as mediocre as Dr. Feelgood. Ok it was slightly better than mediocre but they should have gone with ‘Shout at the Devil’ and saved the political commentary for a band that doesn’t base 99% of their lyrics on strippers and partying. Either way it would be nice to see more bands catch on to this album concert format.

Vince | 7/20/2009, 12:19 pm EST

Vince Neil looks like he just completed about half of a stint in rehab. He should get a job in movies, typecast as “obnoxious guy in bar”.

Tim from Levittown | 7/20/2009, 12:31 pm EST

I was there, just wondering why Mick didn’t come back out for the bow, especially for opening night of the tour. Tommy kept calling him and they just left it at that. He must’ve been in bad shape. I was afraid he’d gone back stage and dropped dead. Mick-best of luck and health to ya, you’re one of the greatest!

Scott | 7/20/2009, 12:38 pm EST

I seen Crue twice and both times they blew my fucking mind.

Scott | 7/20/2009, 12:40 pm EST

hEY VINCE DONT HATE THE CRUE. yOU MY FRIEND ARE AN ASSHOLE NO WAIT U ARE THE WHOLE ASS. FTW

wawijr | 7/20/2009, 1:02 pm EST

what a short set list.
i guess when they do these festivals they have to cut it down some.
sometimes i like these full album shows, but Feelgood i think is mostly filler.
maybe Girls Girls Girls would be better.
No ‘Looks that kill’ or Smoking In Boys Room, Too Young to fall in love, All in the name of,

MyBrainHurts | 7/20/2009, 1:28 pm EST

“The stage design was no doubt intended to mirror the album’s underlining theme of waking up from a nightmarish sickness , it also served as a not so subtle reminder that we are all trapped inside an oppressive and dysfunctional health care system.”
What. The. Fuck.
Congrats to the writer of this article. I can now definitively point to this one write up as the single stupidest thing I have ever read on RollingStone.com Motley Crue shows are about 3 things: tits, beer, & rock’n'roll. And you’ll notice from the comments left by LoveIt that yes, your shitty lack of journalistic integrity does leave the impression on some readers that the performers themselves were attempting to make some kind of political statement as opposed to you the writer simply interjecting your own bullshit agenda into what is supposed to be a concert review. Any journalist worth their salt would be ashamed to interject something so blatantly off topic into their writing. Get your shit together and do your job douchebag.

haha | 7/20/2009, 1:48 pm EST

man i love on the dvd how he passes a bottle of absinthe around for everyone to take a swig (tommy lee) doesn’t he have hep-c? i’d keep passing the bottle and politely decline, ahahahahahahahah

king DH | 7/20/2009, 2:23 pm EST

yo i dont know about all that underlying message crap, all i know is i was @ the show & it rocked ! .motley crue kicked ASS! been waiting to see them live since i was in high school (mid 80’s).It was worth the wait.

Great show, lame openers | 7/20/2009, 2:35 pm EST

Aside from sound issues on the opening song, I thought they sounded great. Motley was definitely worth the price of admission. However, with the exception of Godsmack, the opening bands sucked. Theory of a Dead Man? No balls, lame Candian band who sound like Nicklecreed. Drowning Pool? They had one “hit” 8 years ago. Charm City Devils? Go back to Bawlmer, guys. You ain’t going to make it in the business with unoriginal material like that. All in all, a long and boring day waiting for the Crue to come on.

DRTYDAWG | 7/20/2009, 5:39 pm EST

I was at the show last night and it was AWESOME!…other than the sound on the opening song “Dr.Feelgood” it was a classic CRUE show

Aschel | 7/20/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Were you all at the same show I was? Crue sucked, hard. Really hard. Vince Neil needs to hang it up. And Dr. Feelgood spawned what, 3 songs worth listening to? No need to do the whole album. Snooze. Show had no teeth, no bite. I actually sat down halfway through. Thank god for Godsmack for their usual kick in teeth, or I would have been pissed at having to pay for the mediocrity.

Dr Phil | 7/21/2009, 7:33 am EST

The only thing good about Crue was their kick ass book, The Dirt. The rest is shit. I personally cannot stand Vince’s voice. Horrible. Sounds like a duck.

TO | 7/21/2009, 9:17 am EST

I flew down from Boston for the show…. Great concert. Opening bands rocked and the Crue brought it. All you needed was to see 20,000 people in the crowd raising their fists to shout at the devil…

PhillyCrue's wife | 7/22/2009, 3:55 am EST

This was my fifth time seeing the band and my husbands twenty-something time seeing them, I don’t think the Crue meant to send a message about our healthcare system,of course RollingStone being what it is, has to convey this idea… BTW the show kicked as all except “Theory of a Dead Man” They didn’t fit in with the other bands on the bill! The lead singer is sort-of robotic with his guitar strumming and doesn’t interact with the crowd at all!

Anonymous | 7/22/2009, 7:26 pm EST

MOTLEY CURE SUCKS, this washed up old hair metal band should give up.

Godsmack set list? | 7/22/2009, 9:43 pm EST

I am a HUGE Crue fan have seen over 30 shows if not more. Anyway, LOVE Godsmack as well, does anyone know thier set list. I have Crues. Thanks

Godsmack set list? | 7/22/2009, 9:44 pm EST

crue crue crue | 7/23/2009, 9:38 am EST

motley crue was beast!!!! i was ther

Amanda | 7/23/2009, 11:47 am EST

Hi! The show did not compare to the tour in 05! I was soooo excited and soooo let down! Still love the crue but want the memories of the prior show not the show in camden!

Crue In Chicago | 7/23/2009, 11:48 am EST

I was at the show last night (Chicago). Crue was awesome! While I thought playing the entire Dr Feelgood album would be a bit boring, i thought it was great. Hearing Rattlesnack was great, and who knew She Goes Down would be such a great live-sing a long song.

Wild Side/Looks that Kill/Girlsx3 was awesome too. I would only complain that they werent on long enough. Need more Crue!

Ill be back, for a third time, at Crue Fest 3 next year.

(Godsmack rocked also. Good to see those guys again)

Anonymous | 7/23/2009, 3:50 pm EST

crue sucks… their such tools

Crue Bitch | 7/23/2009, 11:26 pm EST

I agree this writer was very lame. Ive been to many Crue shows… they can perform any of thier songs and still kick your all your asses !

easterly | 7/28/2009, 9:55 am EST

Crue rocks, seen them about 5 times and can’t wait for Sept to see them again..Plan to get on tit cam….hahaha love ya guys

danielle | 7/28/2009, 10:35 am EST

Wow, I’m stunned for some of these comments. I am going to cruefest in tampa. I have never seen crue in concert but there is always a first for everything. Now I have seen drowning pool 3 times while in florida and their music rocks. 37 stiches, soldiers, and of course bodies. Listen to the lyrics they kick ass. With all this said rock n roll rules! Horns up high!

limpcock | 7/29/2009, 12:25 am EST

lol….you think Drowning Pool “rocks”.

btw | 8/1/2009, 11:49 am EST

the hell with the crew. U i need to see.

Nikky Bast | 8/4/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Great job The Crue, you’re still there… This was an cool and amazing show…I want to see it again!

crue | 8/6/2009, 11:33 pm EST

I’ve been a crue fan since to fast for love came out, but Godsmack blew then off the stage last night. It might be time for them to hang it up.

jo blow | 8/8/2009, 2:42 am EST

They sucked and I’ll tell you why. Way too much commercial pussy ballad crap. I kept waiting for their rockin’ stuff from their first two albums, you know the stuff that put them on the map. Shout at the Devil was the only bone thrown. What audience were they playing for?

Kroberts | 8/8/2009, 11:09 pm EST

Saw Cruefest aug.7 in houston.Vince needs to hang it up,I expect an aged rock singer to be a little winded toward the end of the show, but hell we are two songs into the set and this freakin guy cannot finish a line in any of the songs. He keeps pointing the mike to the crowd to finish, i understand this for the chorus maybe but, not for the lead. Hell, I sing the songs in my car when I’m jammin down the road,I’LL be damn if i’m gonna pay 50 bucks and have to sing.Very Lame performance by Vince. The Band sounded great,Godsmack? AWESOME, The crowd got SMACKED!!!

Motley-fukin-crue | 8/9/2009, 2:47 pm EST

Godsmack OWNED the bands..they fucking raised the crowds! Motley was pretty good but not original! Still amazing to see them live! I MET KID ROCK at superpages center here in Dallas on Crue fest! Fuck yes! Amazing

Wow! | 8/9/2009, 6:48 pm EST

Saw the show in Houston on Saturday….Vince was winded during the opening song….and progressively got worse. Tommy does a good job on drums….but he shouldn’t be allowed to open his mouth because he is truly a dumbass. Mick was/is the talent in the band. He was spot-on all night…..Vince……I think it’s time to hang it up bud. Godsmack destroyed the Crue. Buddy saw them the next night in Dallas…..said it was exactly the same.

Pinche Antonio | 8/11/2009, 12:11 am EST

Dallas Tx: Dr. Feelgood only had a couple of good songs.. They were much better in ‘09. Only ONE song from SOLA. No Red Hot, no Live Wire, Face Down in the Dirt or MF of the Year. One song from Shout at the Devil.. Disappointing show and the sound was terrible, it was like listening to music really loud with the treble down all the way. Couldn’t hear the drums under all the mush.. Mick Mars was the only highlight..

cruesangel | 9/8/2009, 12:20 am EST

you guys who think Vince Neil should give it up are idiots! the way he works a stage/crowd he will always pack the people in! he sang all the words at the show we went to and we were front row center dead in front of him so we would know! he’s definately still got it!!!

cruesangel | 9/9/2009, 3:19 am EST

oh yeah~someone might want to tell sully that old saying, :D on’t bite the hand that feeds you”, and godsmack fans also have no business talking shit about the Crue who are the ones who brought gs to you on CF2!!
