Michael Jackson Pepsi Ad Footage Raises Questions About Director’s Role in Accident

Following the release of footage of Michael Jackson’s hair catching fire during an infamous 1984 Pepsi commercial shoot, new questions have been raised about assigning culpability in the 25-year-old incident. TMZ spoke with a Los Angeles Fire Department captain present at the shoot who claims to have overheard a conversation between Jackson and commercial director Bob Giraldi in which Jackson is instructed to remain longer at the top of a staircase so that the pyrotechnic shot would look “more majestic.”

“It was going to look like he was appearing out of the smoke, and that was totally against the instructions, and they did not inform us of that change,” Captain Don Donester, who was there to oversee the safety of the fire effects, told TMZ. “I waited until he got to the bottom of the stairs, grabbed him around his waist, and took him down.”

Captain Donester said that by the time the pyrotechnics went off, Jackson was usually two or three steps down the staircase instead of at the top — his location during the sixth and final take — resulting in a shower of sparks directly over his head. He said the decision put Jackson “in harm’s way without notifying us, the safety officers.”

TMZ writes that Jackson appears to corroborate these new claims in his autobiography: “[Giraldi] came up to me and said, ‘Michael, you’re going down too early. We want to see you up there, up on the stairs. When the lights come on, we want to reveal that you’re there, so wait.’ ”

Giraldi was contacted by TMZ and denied the claims. Much has been made of the incident as a catalyst for Jackson’s subsequent rumored painkiller addiction, which may have ultimately resulted in his death three weeks ago. Yesterday a spokesperson for Pepsi said the company was not involved in the release of the footage, calling the shoot “a terrifying event that we’ll never forget.”

Finally. poor guy. I have been saying all along this addiction started somewhere. Most people like Michael whom are addicted to prescription medicine have or had some serious medical condition. If you are one of the lucky ones that does get well it doesn’t matter. The addiction is there. I could write a book on this subject. I have seen it within my own family many times. Please show him compassion he truly was sick. Sincere Michael Jackson Fan

To whoever said “Bring me the head of Bob Giraldi”… What do you want *his* head for? It’s clear that you’re not even using the one you have! Dumb @$$!

A lot of people survive MUCH more serious accidents, and…

…manage to pull through without drug addiction.

Aaron | 7/17/2009, 3:57 pm EST

i have compassion for his family. but not michael. Yeah he was sick. Made his choices. Child molester/ pill popper. There was no chance of saving him. It was the inevitable. I dont know why people still talk about his death. NONE OF OUR BUSINESS HOW HE DIED. let him RIP

My heart goes out to Michael’s children and his family. Michael gave so much joy and happiness to the world. He will live on forever.

It amazes me how people state things as matter of fact (Aaron). MJ was not a child molester. Only remedial ones can’t comprehend.

Michael you can now be at peace but, I don’t think you will be able to cross over with all this mess going on with your babies(as a parent no matter what age they are still our babies)you have unfinished business so your soul will remain close to them I hope they can feel your presence. Much Love and Good Blessings for your Family.

I have just recenmtly seen the vidoe of the accident-i rmeber very vividly when it happend it was big news but NONE of us realized how bad it really was-thast vidoe was horrifying sickening if yoiu have ever even had a samll burn youi know how it hurts imagine it ten times worse…
Michael was a very sad and ttormented soul-if even HALF ther things that ewre done to him are true it is amazing he lasted in music as long as he did it was only becasude of his incfedibl;e talnet and the hseer force of his will which must have been veryu veryu determined toi keep on keeping on-i am truly grateful for the amazing body of work he left us and that he shared so mcuh of himself with us . he was one of akind that will never be aqgin-addivtion is a horible thing-to say “others have had serous imnjuries and didnt become addicted is to show no comapossion for an addictitve personality who suffered too much abuse -it would have been shocking if he HADNT become addicted to drugs or committed suicide after all he suffered (at the hands of his father especailly-) he was most certtainly metally sick for much of his adult life -he is to be pitied-but most of all i admire hoiwm he just kept taking the hurt and the shame and riducule and he still held his nhead up and kepot on walking -walking thur the fire of his life and the scorn of many but he never gave up.Blees him wherevber he may be and

blees him wherevr he may be he kept his head up walked thru the pain of his life and all the abuse and ridicule and mockery he strayeds functioning for a lonmg while doinghtose drugs and must have been hiorribly addicted some people have an additve personlaity and he certainly jhad many reasons to succumb to that but he showed tremendous grace and spirit under the mist horribl;e of pressures and never gave up he gave us an INCREDIBLKE bodyu of work that is utterly fascinating to wath and also had one of the most verstaile voices in music he could sing liekjan angel and get down with the best Motwon and gospel sounds
he will never be equaled in the entertainment world-he was otjherworldy in his talent -and he gave it all when he perfromed.i aam surprised her made it as long as he did he was such a sad and tormented soul with a wounded spirit -who still manged with ahirrible addiction and serious long term health issues to raise more than any one person for charity-he was loving toward all his fans and tnhey knew it =no other perfropmer can match the kinmd of lobve he inspired GLOBALLY. i am thankful we had him on this earth

Michael Jackson’s family said they believed the addiction came from when he fell of the stage during the Victory Tour in 1984, both incidents very close together though, so that would have just added to his addiction.

Ver ( Jamaican fan in London) | 7/18/2009, 7:48 am EST

I am deeply saddened about all this pain and torture that Michael had to endure. Yes, it’s also very easy to be addicted to painkillers it happened to me as well. Mike needed real genuine peope around him that were interested in his mental and physical well being. He definitely needed help.If only I had the opportunity to be close to him, he probably would still be alive today. Words cant describe the way I feel about his tragedy, it’s such a sad loss of an incredible human being. A lot of people ridiculed him because they failed to understand him because of their own filthy and corrupted minds.(So a man thinketh so is he}. Mike was a sweet and gentle soul, very childish as he had been deprived of his childhood and tried to compensate for it throughout his latter years.Mike has always been my icon from I was a child util now I’m an adult who could be a grandma. The day he died, he took a large portion of my heart with him. I will ever forget this until the day I die. I am still in a state of shock. Michael has left me weeping as if he was a part of my family. It seemsas if I,ve known him personally. I am truly deeply sorry but I hope his soul may finally rest in peace. May the Lord ontinue to bless and guide and protect the Jackson family.

To whoever(Anonymous | 7/17/2009, 2:51 pm EST) said,” A lot of people survive MUCH more serious accidents, and…manage to pull through without drug addiction”.

please check your facts right, mj had surgeries for his scalp after the incident. Not every one, needed scalp surgeries. Please don’t belittle someone else pain because somebody else survived the same without any addiction. Not everyone has the same plight/situation. I think his situation was different. Why have you survived the same incident & come up clean?

Don’t judge others, only God can do that..

Or else you will BURN in hell..

It is easy to JUDGE a situation when it is not YOu, your family memeber, or someone close. No one will ever know the intensity of what Michael delt with and suffered in his daily life. He was an AMAZING, wonderment of talent, compassion, love, and style. I am amazed at the comments from the people who have convicted him , although, he has been cleared BOTH times. The ourpour of love and the imapct of millioms upon millions..which has been said in the billions of people ALL can’t be wrong. Ther are more people praising him and his talents inspite of the false press.. than the HATERS. The people who do not like Michael should KEEP THEIR OPINIONS TO THEMSELVES!!!

I HAVE READ ALOT OF THE COMMENTS LEFT ON THE SUBJECT OF MICHAEL JACKSON , SOME JUST PLAIN IGNORANT BUT MOST A REFLECTION OF WHAT HE WAS BACK TO HIM — KIND , NON-JUDGEMENTAL , COMPASSIONATE , TRUE HEART FELT PLAIN AND SIMPLY **LOVEING** I BELIEVE WHAT WE ARE REFLECTS BACK TO US IN LIFE AS WELL AS IN DEATH , THE MAJORITY HAS SPOKEN !IT TAKES LESS STRIENTH TO PUT YOUR HAND DOWN TO LIFT A BROTHER OR SISTER THAN IT DOES TO PUT YOU FOOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THIER BACK TO HOLD THEM DOWN .PEACE dk

Reading, learning and digesting all the nightmares Michael had to go through when he was here with us made me feel really sad.
How could someone so talented, genuine and nice be crucified in such a way. I had such awe with American way of life, justice system, etc before but not anymore. It is ridiculous how the media can screw up its people’s view and judgement, and even after his death, still Sheila Jackson, Texas congresswoman, is blocked from honoring Michael’s humanatarian efforts.

u will be missed greatly in this world, Michael Jackson. ever since u started moonwalking in this world, u became of part of the lives of millions around the world. so, all of us have lost a part of our lives without u, Michael. U and ur immortal work will live on for ages to come, with greater relevance, as that’s the quality of ur work which we were slow to understand!! u are alive Michael, in the hearts of ur nearest and dearest ones, especially ur children, and hope ur guiding spirit be with them to guide them safely through life!!!!

Most people that are involved in a major accident thankfully have doctors that care for their patients, monitor their recovery and progress, recognize addictive drugs, and/or recognize a patient’s addiction and act accordingly in the interest of their patient. Most people have families and friends that look out for them. Since everyone KNEW there was a problem, from his doctor, to his family, to members of his entourage … why have we lost this beautiful man? Addicts, in the course of their addiction, tend to lose their capability of reason and rely on others to pull them through. It’s unfortunate, but fact. Do not judge an addict for their weakness, it’s a living hell.

Patricia | 7/18/2009, 10:44 am EST

Michael was not only the greatest entertainer of our lifetime but he was also one of the greatest humanitarians. His charities donated more than 300 million dollars worldwide to the needy. He is the most charitable celeb of all times. Michael was always visiting sick kids at hospitals and orphanages but the media didn’t bother to cover that. What they wanted was the dirt on him. They always took a story and twisted it to make him look bad somehow. I will always miss Michael, I haven’t stopped missing him since the day he died. He had a beautiful soul and a huge heart. The only thing that eases the pain of missing him on this earth is that he is now at peace, he doesn’t have to hear all the negativity. Rest in peace Michael, you will be forever missed.

JUSTICE | 7/18/2009, 11:05 am EST

Aaron (7/17/2009, 3:57 pm) are you talking on behalf of Michael’s murderers? Of course it is our business how he died. He was murdered and these people MUST pay for their crime. WE WANT TO KNOW WHO MURDERED MJ. WE WANT JUSTICE AND WE WANT IT NOW!!!!!!!

DK | 7/18/2009, 11:09 am EST

TO…..PATRICIA …KUDOS TO YOU ….THE WORLD THRIVES ON DIRT , WHY IS IT THAT ? SOME WOULD RATHER SEE THIER BROTHER/SISTER FALL THAN TO SECEED ? IM WITH YOU I DONT GET IT !

Doctor Who | 7/18/2009, 11:14 am EST

The doctors who enabled MJ’s drug addiction should be struck of the register.

I am sure they were aware that the concoction of drugs given to MJ wasn’t the right thing to do. Yet, they did it, not because they provided true patient care….they did it for their own personal wealth.

Michael Jackson’s music will live on and will continue to touch everyone’s life. It is a pity that he had to suffer media exploits to the point of him retreating further into his own world.

Rest in Peace Michael. Peace to your family always.

Vigorous | 7/18/2009, 11:41 am EST

Listen all, those who miss Michael Jackson like I do should miss him. He was a force. Like a mother, a great dad, and a grandmother. He combed thru generations and maintained his popularity. He was part of so many peoples good times. So yes you should miss him. He was like a brother, close uncle, and an even closer family friend. He was not a pedophile. Pedophiles are convicted child molesters. Those who call him a pedophile are stupid, lame, and should call themselves dumbasses. If a family tells their child to lie and say that they molested them, does that make them pedophiles?
Let ignorant people be ignorant. When they cross your path then you can knock their ass out. Don’t pay attention to the negativity. They are fake. Most of the negativity comes from the lust for attention. The media wants to be recognized as bold. If you put their ass in the middle of the hood they’ll be scared to death.
Michael Jackson was an honorable man. Not to say he’s jesus, but if jesus had to go through it and he was the son of God, Michael can only relate.
Enjoy what Michael gave you. Cherrish it. If you still feel a bad way about the things he did, I hope your past is as clean as a whistle. B/c when God judges you it will be more harsh.

Michael….

Taneesha | 7/18/2009, 11:42 am EST

Michael was surrounded by greedy enablers. He wanted to escape the pain of solitude.

Being a star is a different lifestyle than being unknown, you can’t go out without security and so on.

This is why we see so many tragedies like this more often than not.

From Kurt Cobain to Anna Nicole Smith to Marvin Gaye..and now MJ.

angel | 7/18/2009, 11:47 am EST

this video was really terrible…being a victim of burn…it was really painful…i also experience it…you cant blame him to use the said drugs …you cant explain how painful it was…i was burned by a boiling water..what more if it was like what happened to michael…. the issue in painkiller addiction..it doesn’t make sense right now…he’s already dead if someone was really concern to michael they should help him get over with that addiction….at any cost….

i just hope that they really find the real reason behind michael’s death…and find out who are the persons responsible for his addiction….

michael is the victim here if his doctors were really concern about his health they shouldn’t give him such prescription instead they should help him to overcome with it….

the world is mourning over the sad news we really lost a genius and a loving person…..

thank you for the music michael… rest in peace….

I do think that burn looked very painful, however, I suspect Michael would have escaped his life through drugs despite that. He looked like a tortured soul and I think but for the exception of his kids, he likes where he is better.

Too Bad | 7/18/2009, 12:02 pm EST

Too bad Pepsi had to use fire on the set and so close to him. They put him in danger for no reason. Shame on them. Just to sell sugar and water in a can. Was anybody ever looking out for him? Or was he just a cash cow? People in Hollywood are greedy and corrupt. Look at what happen to Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, and now Michael.

MabeUKMJ | 7/18/2009, 1:57 pm EST

AARON – your whole attitude about mj is solely based upon what u have read or heard about him from the media etc, may i suggest that before u judge another human being next time u take the time to educate urself a bit more and have more of an open mind! i understand that people are intitled to their own opinions but if u are interested in knowing the full truth then pls read ‘MICHAEL JACKSON – THE CONSPIRACY’ written by Aphrodite(somebody) it is a new book with the actual trial transcripts, quotes from recordings from J chandlers mother etc when she confided in another that her husband was going to try to frame MJ to extort $$$’s, the list goes on! basically this book is about to be massive, written by a journo that started to research the book because she was angry about the verdict ‘innocent’, she went on to uncover exactly how dishonest and vile the press had actually been to sell their cheap rag’s only reporting totally untrue reports to condem the man in their own way. i wont say alot more because people should read it for themselves if they want to learn about the truth, the facts dont lie and as a life long MJ fan i urge people to read this book!

There will always be nasty shallow people with nothing better to do than hate on mj, but if u dont like the guy then dont waste precious energy shouting it, specially when ur all gullable enough to just believe the tabloids, all i can say is research from credible sources before u judge and u’ll find there is alot more than has met ur lazy eye’s!
And i say this with respect to people, there is already too much anger in this world!

I love u Michael Jackson, words cant explain how much u mean to me i will miss u always xxxx

Michael Jackson was a human being most importantly. Loving people, he did best. Now the media is digging for garbage. Evan & Jordy Chandler and his family of evil doers, Gavin Arvizo who lives in Atlanta Georgia with his family of evil doers his mother was arrested for stealing money from welfare $30,000 and orchestrated the false charges against our brother Michael, Tom Sneddon (DA orchestrator of the trial), Nancy Grace, Keith Oberman, Anderson Cooper and many more will face God for what they did to another human being. They are smiling and enjoying their ability to scandalize Michael after death but they must remember,

Galatians 6:7-10, 7 “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Michael Jackson, let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do well to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”

Their Day of Judgment is coming and God will bring back to Evan Chandlier and Family Tom Sneddon (DA orchestrator of the trial, Nancy Grace, Keith Oberman, Anderson Cooper and to many more remembrance all the evil they have spoken against our brother Michael. 1 Chronicles 16-20-22, “20 And they went about from nation to nation, And from one kingdom to another people. 21 He suffered no man to do them wrong; yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, 22 Saying, Touch not mine anointed ones (MICHAEL JACKSON), and do my prophets no harm.” MICHAEL GAVE AND HELPED EVERYONE HE COULD NEVER WOULD HURT A CHILD BECAUSE HE WAS HURT AS AN INNOCENT CHILD. HE TAUGHT GRACE AND LOVE….

So what now, as far as this article and Pepsi’s or the director’s part in the accident? Michael Jackson settled with Pepsi.. his drug use and misuse is of his own doing. Under certain situations people have to understand that greedy people exist and if they bring good people down they will meet there match in hell.

Ever since I was a kid, I have been listening to MJ. I have played some of his songs non-stop for weeks together, day and night. He has brought me so much happiness and delight, every day of my life all these years that to think that he is no more makes me feel kind of empty.Giant as he was among men, lesser men have judged and condemned him, people who did not give a damn about how they were living their own pathetic life and their own sins. He has has lived in humiliation of the worst kind for nearly 20 years. Let him stand before his Creator now. Let him be judged by the One who made him. Let him find mercy and peace now and for ever.RIP MJ.

It is really no big mystery where this footage came from. J. Randy Taraborrelli states in his well-researched MJ biography that Michael had privately hired someone to shoot extra video of that Pepsi Commercial as it was being professionally filmed. Right after the accident occurred, someone in Michael’s camp (one of his brothers or his manager Frank Dileo) grabbed the footage out of the videographer’s camera in case evidence of the incident was needed.

After MJ was released from the hospital, he watched the footage privately. He was angry about what happened and wanted to release the footage to the public so they could see for themselves what he went through. This was back in 1984. Frank Dileo (his manager) talked him out of it. Dileo convinced MJ that the footage was gruesome and that it would be unnecessary and cruel to put his fans through that. MJ finally agreed with Frank that the footage should not be released, but he was determined to get a big settlement from Pepsi, which he did. He used the money to finance a burn center. And that was the end of it.

Until now. Obviously, MJ and his people have kept this footage locked away somewhere for the past 25 years. After his death, it is quite clear that someone (his family? Frank Dileo?) knew about it and decided to release it for whatever reason.

The only thing that was ever released back in 1984 was a still photograph from the video of Michael with his hair on fire. But it was blurry and didn’t show nearly as much as this video shows. But there is no question this footage comes from MJ’s camp. Who made the decision to dig it up and release it is another story.

The story about the director telling MJ to wait at the top of the stairs appears to be accurate as well. MJ talks about this in his autobiography, as does J. Randy Taraborrelli in his biography of Michael. It seems logical that this is why MJ’s hair caught on fire. He was too close to the pyrotechnics when they went off, and sparks from them landed on his head before he could get away. It seems clear that this was a tragic accident, and that no one, least of all the Bob Giraldi, meant for it to happen. It was extremely unfortunate, but certainly not the sole cause of MJ’s drug addictions. To suggest that this long ago incident is the ultimate reason that MJ died is absurd.

I have been terribly moved by Michael Jackson’s death. He will NOT have lived his life in vain. I have resolved to become a BETTER PERSON because of the sensitive, caring, charitable, talented, giving humanitarian HE was.

I love you Michael. May the accolades and tributes to your life continue without end.

RIP sweet Prince.

what has this world come to..above being the greatest entertainer, a true humanitarian and so much more, since Michaels death.. theres been so much crap its unbelievable it seems most are out to jump in this man’s grave and he’s not even buried and dissect him like an animal..Michael jackson was a beautiful gentle soul.. and doesnt deserve the crap thats out there hasnt the world done enough already in this precious mans life..what the hell is wrong with people, are we so callused and cold blooded as human beings it almost makes me wish i wasnt on this planet..its so very sad.. Michael has deserved more then what is happening right now.. LEAVE HIM ALONE for GOD”S sake.. LET HIM REST IN PEACE.Focus on the good this man has brought into this world.. all the other stories are not needed..HE’S GONE!!!!

Teri | 7/19/2009, 1:29 am EST

how would people feel if their loved one was dissected for all their dirty laundrey after their death… and then have it broadcasted.. what people thinks its ok just cause he was famous.. NO ITS NOT OK!!!!! and i really doubt anyone would want their lost loved ones disrespected like that.. I get so disgusted with the human race sometimes, its sickening what people would do for a damn story for money..NOTE!!!! Michael not once even in the face of his adversaries never and i mean never judged anyone..Michael is where now no one can hurt him anymore… no its now us fans, family and friends that have to bear all of this and u know what its ok.. cause we are in great numbers… and trust me God is looking down on what all is going on and what has been and is still continuing on with one of his gems..

One of Michael Jackson’s legacies was his humanitarian efforts. It is so appropriate that he establishee a burn center, because he knew the pain of being burned. One of the reasons why he was put on this earth was to teach lessons of generosity, and his fame helped him teach that lesson. Bless his heart.

Will Pepsi ever get it right? | 7/19/2009, 2:26 am EST

Didn’t Pepsi bail on MJ after the ‘93 allegations? Guess they didn’t feel obligated to remain as loyal. This footage locked away for decades after, while Jackson battled the psychological demons following an incident such as this privately.

No one was ever aware of what he went through. He never sought pity or payback from anyone who did him wrong inadvertently or directly. And people still have the gall to attack and persecute this man? If he didn’t retaliate in life, what is it about his current state that suddenly poses sucha huge threat to them? Oo they’re feelin it now. It’s because they know they had a hand in this, from the anti-netizens to the poorest examples in journalism and everyone in between. Vindication is on its way and the guilt and humility you force yourselves to live with after, I pray is all the punishment you’re dealt. RIP MJ!

When we say “I love you,or I love that song, or I love pizza,” it all comes from the same place ,for diffrent reasons. It comes from within us, first. Michael Jackson to me was more than a genius with awsome talents, he was a humanitiran who used his talents to give a message, of love, peace, and compassion for all of humanity. Like so many great geniuses of the past; Mozart, Michelangelo,as well as great humanitrian leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mendela , all whom Michael Jackson had great admiration and respect for, because he too, had the same characterstics. And all of them have had struggles in their lives that they had to conquer or had to endure unbareable attacks to their spirit, yet all of them rose above the ignorance and pain. Yes, I can say I love Michael Jackson, because I see in my own heart and soul to see good in every human being, to implement peace and I too beleive in healing the world..what is in me was in him. A little bit of imformation about Michal Jackson that the media does not focus on; When MJ found out that a little boy had been waiting for a kidney ,for too long, and was dying, he used his name to speed the process and that child’s life was saved. MJ visited and gave support to United Stated soldiers visiting them across the globe, as well donating money to support them and their families. I can go on and on.I too was misunderstood,( I am sure like so many of us) and lied about-which in turned, lost my home and became homeless with 3 small children. Yes,I can empathize with him. I m proud that I m amoung millions of people around the world who “love Michael Jackson” for it tells me that those same of millions of people have love and compassion in their heart, too. As for all the doubters, and those who believe the media promaganda of lies, maybe they need to look into their own hearts. Finally, I really do hope that there will not come a day when they will be accussed of something they did not do, to be tortured and humiliated for the community or public to see. Or someone they are close to, maybe a bronther, sister, a father or mother, who they know is innoccent. I wonder if they can rise above it with love and compassion as Michael Jackson did? Michael Jackson, I for one will continue your legacy of love and peace for all humanity..RIP you will never..NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.King of Pop, King of Hearts

„It was just a dream, promised a star
And all light faded away under a glance!
I swim in my dream, I live everything, I feel everything,
Already do not hurt the flashing earthly lights.

I sleep, in silence, silk
I dream a million nightfalls already
And my lounge, calls back so many teardrops
But no, no I may go…I can’t…
I am the part of the Universe already!”

I Lopve You Michael!!!!!!!!!!!

You are the heart, which beats in me,,
You are the blood, which leaks in me,!
You are the inspiration, with which I write,,
You are the tear, with which I am crying,!

You are the eye, with which I see you,,
You are the desire, with which I wait for you,.
You are the soul, which keeps me alive,,
You or the illusion, you are the lives!

You are the prince, who came for me,,
You are the person who I asked of the sky!
You are the hand, with which you touch me,,
You are everything because you live in me!

I Love You Michael!!!!!!!!!!!
