Criminal Investigation Into Madonna Stage Collapse Begins

7/17/09, 5:51 pm EST

French prosecutors have launched a manslaughter investigation into the stage collapse that killed two and injured dozens in Marseille this week, the U.K.’s Times Online reports. Workers were building the stage for Madonna’s July 19th Sticky & Sweet show when a crane gave way, causing a crush of rubble that claimed the lives of Charles Criscenzo of France and Charles Prow, from England. The concert, which would have been attended by 40,000, has been canceled and Madonna issued a teary statement from the stage in Italy last night.

TMZ reports that the company responsible for constructing Madonna’s stage in Marseille is the same team that built her stage at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, which also collapsed in November 2008. A representative for the company, E S Group, issued a statement that reads:

“We were incredibly saddened by the tragic accident during the construction of a stage at the Velodrome at Marseille. Our thoughts at this current time go out to the families and loved ones of the two men who died and to those who have been injured.

Two of our Directors have flown out to Marseille to visit the injured and to get a better understanding of what caused the accident. At present, it would not be appropriate to speculate on potential causes of the accident, but we are working closely with the French authorities to investigate what caused this incident. This is normal practice for such an incident and we will provide a further update as soon as it is possible.

There is absolutely no technical or other connection between the incident at the Dodgers Stadium in November 2008 and the tragic accident yesterday (July 16 2009) at the Velodrome in Marseille.”

The Times Online reports that investigators will be interviewing witnesses and reviewing video and contracts to help determine whether safety procedures were followed during the stage’s construction. The accident happened while the top of the stage was being lifted by four cranes.

A terrible tragedy… blessings and prayers to all the families affected by this terrible tragedy…

Matt S | 7/18/2009, 9:33 am EST

The fact that the company actually has a “standard procedure” for such accidents is a pretty bad sign.

Trent Reznor | 7/18/2009, 11:03 am EST

Oh my gawd. It’s not like Madonna is even da releavants anymorezz. She hazn’t had da gooder albums since da late 80deez. OMGZ Madonnaz is a murderaaaazzz.

Alex Rodriguez | 7/18/2009, 11:04 am EST

Go figure, not only is Madonna a home wrecker, but a stage wrecker.

Schirminator | 7/18/2009, 1:06 pm EST

It’s an accident and there’s no great and powerful thing that we all need to understand about the relevance of Madonna or the company that was constructing the stage. Human error causes human injuries and sometimes death every day. FYI: I find it ironic that someone calling themselves “Trent Reznor” has an issue with relevance being NIN hasn’t had a good record since 1993. Madonna has had plenty of number ones and she’s the highest paid female entertainer on the planet. Ouch! That must hurt for someone who can’t even have a hit unless a legend like Johnny Cash sings it. Even then, it’s a B-hit. Oh well, life sucks in the slow lane!

rrred777 | 7/18/2009, 1:11 pm EST

I think that having a standard policy for collapses should have caused bells to go off in the DUMB BELL (Madona) the first time.

stage builder | 7/18/2009, 5:11 pm EST

all you people slagging maddonna should just shut up to be honest it has very little to do with her it is the crane and stageing companys responsibility and further more as it has been pointed out human error ie failure to notice a missing pin or a damaged block etc accidents happen and the main thing is that we learn from them.

it is a sad & tragic thing and cannot be minimized and I wouldn’t try. Madonna strikes me as a person who is highly responsible to her public & who loves life and people. her whole message is consciousness and she does her best to live this. it is hard to be in such a high voltage atmosphere and control everything. think of how much or how little we can control the little accidents in our own lives. no doubt she will reverberate with the messages of this lesson for the rest of her life. do not think that people like her have it easy or that their hearts are caked over with unfeeling skin. the lessons are always difficult when you take on an assignment like this. think it’s easy? you didn’t try it, did you?

Kind of strange that someone who accuses the ‘cheap’ staging company of using duct tape remains anonymous. As for Matt S worrying about ’standard procedures’, these are procedures that any company must follow, not an indication of a high accident rate. Investigations will apportion blame, riight now, anonymous ‘1’should stick with feeling for those that have lost livelihoods, limbs and loved ones, like anonymous ‘2′

Ronald | 7/19/2009, 11:37 pm EST

Madonna is not to be blamed here. It was not her fault nor anyone’s desire for this to happen. I am praying for those who had passed away to experience God’s peace for all eternity.

Tony B | 7/20/2009, 3:03 am EST

While they are investigating maybe they can investigate why Madonna has a career as well.

R Stone | 7/20/2009, 4:52 am EST

A settlement will be made with the stipulation that nobody talks about what really happened and that way we will never know or learn from it.

Climber | 7/20/2009, 9:22 am EST

Should have hired stageco

simon may | 7/20/2009, 12:40 pm EST

Courtney Love | 7/20/2009, 1:46 pm EST

Madge | 7/20/2009, 1:56 pm EST

It’s more likely the scheduling being too tight to allow for any error. WHen something goes wrong, you have to find a quick fix

MADGESTY | 7/20/2009, 2:06 pm EST

Before stating your uninformed opinion, maybe you should learn to read and write.

someone in the buisness | 7/20/2009, 5:47 pm EST

Accidents do happen and sometimes its actually the safty procedures that cause them with so much health and safety the obvious can get missed. The paperwork is covered the lads doing the job are distracted and ouch

old hand with long teeth | 7/20/2009, 7:11 pm EST

No one can predict catastropic fail er let the investigation take its course..Rigging fails there is is a reason for it and it will come out in the investigation stop speculating…. and stage co let me remind you of the rollin stones in Madrid..Share are grief as we did yours one of ours died and we are with his family in are grief we have not lost one of ours in 25 years of staging this is the first

Ronald | 7/20/2009, 11:37 pm EST

Madonna has already visited the bereaved. I hope that the 360 touring crew will learn from this tragic incident. My heart goes out to those who have suffered and died.

SS | 7/21/2009, 3:25 am EST

Four crane lifting operations are classified as a High Risk activity to start with, at least downunder. A potential mechanical failure could easily cause this incident. No one can bring back the two that have died, but it will be interesting to see how French/EU authorities respond to this incident. Will there be just a big court case and no update to the EU legislative/enforcement system…

London | 7/21/2009, 4:05 am EST

This has been a terrible tragedy and has completely shattered all those concerned. I think people should stop speculating and slinging mud, everyone is hurting enough.

old hand with long teeth | 7/21/2009, 8:52 pm EST

I agree with LONDON

Hi Climber !StageCo,ESS,Megaforce or Nuessli !
Health and Safety is highest priority in all the staging companies !
Two years ago in Madrid-human error
and two killed,2004 Swizzerland -30m high Halfpipe collapsed because of static miscalculation ! !Dont speak about cheap companie without any idea what’s going on during a setup !
All the Crews are verry professional and the Jobs are verry complex and Madonna or the
R.Stones have nothing to do with
all this accidents!They make them
just popular and give “important” people a platform to give “important”comments and speculations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you perfect?Do you know how it happend?Do you know why?You know
nothing !May you post comments for
the “BRAVO GIRL”

aus | 7/29/2009, 12:33 am EST

S peculate all you like the majority of you who have never worked in this industry will never know the pressure or the many many variables involved its a highly dangerous profession no amount of safety precautions will change that i have been in the industry for only a year and know some of the boys on this tour they are all very safety concious and extremely professional in every aspect of what they do. they work damn hard and dont deserve the crap they are being given accidents happen how about instead of slagging of these guys lets just pray that this never happnes again and remember that two lives where lost show respect
