Warren Haynes Hits the Studio for Gov’t Mule LP, Soulful Solo Disc

“Can we turn this up to 100 dBs?” Warren Haynes asks an engineer at a New York studio, where the eighth studio album by his band Gov’t Mule is being mastered. The technician complies, and “Frozen Fear” — a simmering, R&B-flavored track — erupts out the speakers.

The song is the result of what the guitarist calls “a very cathartic, creative month” this past January. After realizing how busy he would be in 2009 — thanks to a spring tour as part of the reunited Dead, followed by summer and fall shows with the Allman Brothers Band — Haynes booked time at Willie Nelson’s Pedernales Studio in Austin right after Christmas. “We thought, ‘It’s gonna be a busy year, let’s get started with the new record right away,’” he says.

What emerged were, in fact, two records. The current lineup of Gov’t Mule — guitarist-vocalist Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Danny Lewis, and new Swedish bass player Jorgen Carlsson — laid down over a dozen tracks for By a Thread, the band’s first album of new material in three years. The tracks range from Southern-fried rockers like “Stepping Lightly” and “Any Open Window” (”very Hendrixy,” Haynes says) to high-powered country (”Gordon Jones,” about a fictitious war profiteer) and folk (an electric version of the traditional “Railroad Boy”).

The band also recorded two different versions of another Haynes original, “Broke Down on the Brazos” — one featuring guitar dueling between Haynes and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, and another (with horns) that reminds Haynes of Parliament-Funkadelic. “We didn’t want to be pigeonholed as a rock band,” says Haynes, “because we have so many influences.” No longer with ATO Records, the album will be released on Haynes’ own Evil Teen label in September.

Just before the start of the Mule sessions, Haynes also cut what he calls “the record I’ve been wanting to make for a long time.” Still untitled, the album — recorded at the same Austin studio — is Haynes’ nod to vintage soul and R&B, complete with a backup band that included Meters bassist George Porter Jr. and keyboardists Ivan Neville and Faces founder Ian McLagan.

Haynes knows the results may throw Deadheads and Allmans fans for a loop. “In some ways we are part of the jam band community,” he says. “But there’s also a part of that community that’s a little close-minded and should accept a lot more genres of music than it does.”

Meaning his solo album won’t have as many of the extended guitar workouts Haynes is renowned for? “In my mind, it might have started out that way,” he chuckles. “But by the time we made the record, there’s plenty of guitar solos!”

One of the true greats of my generation. Beautiful songwriter, amazing guitarist, and soulful singer. No wonder he is in 3 of the best touring bands in the country. Can’t wait to hear the new Mule album and Warren’s solo album should be a real treat for any fan

Haynes is an absolutely sick muscian. The Mule “live” shows are some serious bang for the buck. I’m hungry for the new record.

This is great News on the R&B Disc from Mr. Haynes! I just saw Mule 2-nights ago in KC and they played a solid 3-hr show which included many covers that he puts his spin on. I enjoy his (Mule) New Years Run because there are always surprises that cover the entire industry. Also looking forward to the New Mule disc.

Warren is the man, plain and simple. His productivity level is just sick and starting to wonder if there is any song in any genre that the man cannot play!

Warren is the hardest working man in rock-n-roll. A few years ago @ Deer Creek in Indy I saw Warren play a 45 min. solo set>70 min. Mule set>90 min. Phil & Friends >120 min. Allmans. All fom a guy who started as a session musician for David Allen Coe.

Warren is THE man

Warren Haynes is the consummate, master musician. He speaks all musical languages fluidly. I wish there were far more musicians out there like him that Rolling Stone could cover. It almost seems unfair to music fans that there aren’t more like him!

Warren is one of the nicest guys in the business. A true class act.

Warren remains the undisputed heavyweight champion of rock n roll!

I’ve been lucky this year – just caught my fourth Mule show of 2009 this past weekend in Denver, along with Dead and Allmans shows. You can never get too much of Warren.

Warren is “the” last of his kind…nobody, but nobody will ever top the soul and passion behind the notes that he plays… it’s in the tradtion of Hendrix, Page, Duane, Clapton.. all of those guitar players are speaking, not just stringing patterns together, without meaning..like most of the current “new” players… OK.. I’m a little jaded.. and there are most likely some guitarist out there that does get it… but in this cheap plastic world we live in.. those guys will never see the light of day… I do believe Warren is just hittin’ his stride, but he’s the last of his kind… I run into him in a little club( Flaming Sally’s ), in Macon GA. ( right after his first solo record ) That’s the night I understood just how talented the man is… Sure would like to see the Mule come back to GA.. south of Atlanta that is.. !! … and yep a Rolling Stone cover for the hardest working man in music is truly deserved!!

Mack | 8/9/2009, 2:25 pm EST

I think Warren has done enough in music to deserve the cover of the rolling stone. They will put BS acts on there, but a person who restarted the Dead, and Allman Bros two bands which are awsome. In addistion start a band that rocks out hard…… Cover in Sept !!!! Lets see it

Heg-ee | 11/30/2009, 3:09 pm EST

Please RS, don’t give Warren the cover of your magazine…it would be wasted on the superficial melon heads who waste their time listening to Shakira, Rhiarra (sic)and all the other overproduced untalented hack “artists”. warren Haynes is a consummate musician, something your magazine tends to overlook when it’s too busy trying to figure out additional ways to turn a profit by pasting some airbrushed corporately owned lip-synching dancer on the cover. Shame on you, RS for overlooking the truely deserving…the musicians.
