Whitney Houston Debuts “I Look To You” Songs, Album Cover

7/15/09, 5:31 pm EST

Whitney Houston premiered tracks from her upcoming album I Look To You last night at London’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Clive Davis, who discovered the singer and shepherded her career, was also on hand to present nine unfinished songs from the LP, Billboard reports. Houston also officially unveiled the album’s cover art today (see above). As Rolling Stone previously reported, I Look To You — Houston’s first non-Christmas LP since 2002’s Just Whitney — will be released September 1st.

“When Clive called me I was pretty ready to buy my island home [and retire] but he said, ‘No, you’re going to sing again, people want to hear you,’ ” Whitney reportedly told the audience at the Mandarin Oriental. New song “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” which was written by Grammy winner Diane Warren and produced by “I Have Nothing” producer David Foster, leaked several weeks ago. Other collaborators on I Look To You reportedly include Alicia Keys, Stargate, R. Kelly and Akon, who features on the track “Like I Never Left,” Billboard writes.

The album also reportedly includes possible first single “Call You Tonight,” “Million Dollar Bill,” “Nuthin’ But Love,” the R. Kelly-penned title track, “Worth It,” “For the Lovers” and a rendition of Leon Russell’s oft-covered 1970 hit “A Song For You.” Davis made mention that the album was not yet complete and that many of the songs were still under construction. A press release for the album indicates similar listening events will be staged in Los Angeles and New York next week.

Look out Mariah, Beyonce, Leona and Christina…the #1 Diva is coming back!

I love Whitney and really hope she still has some of that remarkable voice left after years of abuse

sophia | 7/15/2009, 9:02 pm EST

With Whitney’s style and class nothing matters for competing anymore… she have proven herself years ago. What we want to see is a comeback from all the naysayers.
Whitney is blessed with love.
Can’t wait to see her on stage:)

Kedavion | 7/15/2009, 9:36 pm EST

Whitney Houston is the Greatest Diva and unmistakingly she was given the name THE VOICE longtime ago. The Voice in definition is one which opens there mouth and everyone else is cut because THE VOICE is either Speaking or Singing. Whitney is the Greatest Female Artist Of All Time no matter if she sold more records or not. Whitney has but one thing to prove which is how she came with a strength from herself which she didn’t crash, tumble and at last she didn’t crumble. I love her and I always will.

I pray for you Whitney and always will.

Igor | 7/15/2009, 10:12 pm EST

Daphnee | 7/16/2009, 2:52 am EST

Whitney is a blessed songstress that needs to continue to share her amazing gift with the world. Welcome back Whitney… we’ve missed your presence in the current music industry.

johnny | 7/16/2009, 3:11 am EST

I LOVE Whitney, but how was she planning on retiring? i thought she was still under contract for a couple more cd’s? Also, she’s a little too airbrushed. All that aside, I cannot wait for this cd to drop!

Leilani | 7/16/2009, 5:36 am EST

Whitney is still Regal. You Make my heart runneth over. You will never be replaced.

Warren Mason | 7/16/2009, 9:02 am EST

From a songwriting perspective, “I Didn’t Known My Own Strength” does lack a trademark Whitney Houston vocal climax. It is difficult to know whether the omission was a conscious songwriting decision or if Whitney Houston has lost her soaring vocal range.

David Foster is known for complex key changes and songs that build with each verse. It is a surprise to hear a song that pairs Whitney Houston and David Foster without an enormous climax. This circumstantial logic seems to lend validity to the notion that Whitney is not capable of hitting the high notes that she once was.

The rub is that Whitney turns in a fairly decent, albeit subdued, vocal performance on “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength”. If this song is any indication, Whitney is still an exceptionally strong vocalist who outperforms the vast majority of the current pop marketplace. Though the soaring vocals are dearly missed, she does showcase a great deal of maturity in her vocal phrasing. The song itself is well written and the chorus is memorable.

You have always outclassed the rest. This record will shine!

cindi & Dick | 7/16/2009, 10:37 am EST

I am the happiest person ever I have been waiting to hear her sing again. She has a beautiful voice and my husband and I can’t wait to hear her sing. I have a lot of her songs – but new ones will be great. I love it and thank you Whitney.

BizarroP | 7/16/2009, 10:48 am EST

classy??? since when is being a crack-head classy?

wrecksracer | 7/16/2009, 11:19 am EST

She’s talented, that’s for sure, but let’s not get carried away. Aretha is a better singer and is more influential.

jeremy | 7/16/2009, 11:29 am EST

Glad to have her back. She looks amazing! What an inspiration to show that you can have your troubles but can also pick yourself back up again. Her voice sounds incredible still. The high notes are still there just less frequently. Good to see her acting her age.

Jeff | 7/16/2009, 1:40 pm EST

‘I Look To You?’ Lame.

How about ‘Songs From The Crackhouse’?

:-)

Carol | 7/16/2009, 2:18 pm EST

Whitney, you look great. You look as though you have freshened up and ready to go again, full speed. You look relaxed. I’m pretty sure the voice is still there. Pick up the pieces and do what you have to do. You will always be a legend–especially with “I’ll Always Love You.” God gives second chances we all make mistakes. So I’d say, you go girl!!

Brian | 7/16/2009, 3:00 pm EST

Haha. I love this, “Whitney, you look great!” stuff, like she’s going to be reading this. And yeah, Photoshop and airbrush can do that to a former (current?) druggie. Wow, you people are gullible sheep.

Frenchie | 7/16/2009, 5:26 pm EST

I heard the words a while back, and I envisoned you singing this song. Welcome back Whitney, what a blessing you are to all of us!

Chris | 7/16/2009, 5:29 pm EST

Actually Brian, they do really read the comments and she really is looking good these days.

wrecksracer | 7/16/2009, 5:47 pm EST

crack is whack!

djandy | 7/16/2009, 10:31 pm EST

I thought Whitneys album “Just Whitney” was a great album. I don’t know why she waited so long. Her voice is still there and hopefully she is drug free and finally Bobby Free. Welcome Back Whitney!

Shane | 7/17/2009, 3:41 am EST

Amazing!!!!

Love all the jealous haters who act as if recovering from an addiction somehow bars you from ever rebounding to greater heights.

omg omg omg shes back omg i just cant wait till it hit stores im gonna be the first to buy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wrecksracer | 7/17/2009, 11:01 am EST

Whitney does have a great voice. But see how she has producers to make her music for her? and choose material for her? Just like most other “modern” soul singers. Aretha, on the other hand, could compose, write lyrics, play piano, arrange, and sing. All Whitney fans can point to is record sales. Who are you posters calling “The Queen” and “The Voice”?

howard | 7/17/2009, 2:26 pm EST

i am so glad your back and i hope to hear some your past songs like “I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU” AND “I BELIEVE IN YOU AND ME”. god be with you whitney, your the world’s greatest singer!

Whitney's Dealer | 7/17/2009, 4:17 pm EST

It’s funny that you guys think Whitney is off drugs. I just hooked her up the other day. She bases more than the Yankees! Her new album will suck and will go nowhere, just like Whitney herself. RIP Whitney!

BEAST | 7/17/2009, 6:02 pm EST

IM GLAD TO SEE HER MOVING FORWARD AND MAKING NEW MUSIC. THEY MADE HER LOOK LIKE A DEAD PERSON ON THAT ALBUM COVER; SHE LOOKS BETTER THAN THAT. THE TRUE DIVAS MARIAH AND WHITNEY ARE BACK ON THE CHARTS!

Ambrosia | 7/18/2009, 9:52 pm EST

To all the hating ass assholes are you bitches going to make those SAME comments about dopefiends and slutty drug addicts like Brittany and Lindsay GotsomebloHan and Amy Crackhouse?! Oh that’s RIGHT when you are a black celebrity you are held to a ‘different’ standard more like DOUBLE STANDARD post-racial my ASS!!!

The Lord, is there for you Whitney wishing you all the love and respect……. Your European fan.

Ms Lydia | 7/21/2009, 3:35 pm EST

I ‘m not going to curse anyone out or say anything negative about black or white race issues.
Everyone in life deserves asecond chance. You without mistakes cast the first stone. Anyone who comes back from drugs, alcohol, violence should be commended. It is some evil people in the world who want to see people continue to fail and not pick themselves back up. Those who are wishing ill will towards Whitney…remember, you reep what you sew. T Whitney so called (Drug Dealer. You just lost your bread and butter, you mad…lol Punch someone’s time clock and get a real job.
Peace brothers and sisters!

To all the Ignorant people | 7/22/2009, 7:27 pm EST

If anyone remembers she got hooked on drugs because of her loser husband, everyone makes mistakes BLACK AND WHITE. She is and always will be the Diva everyone wants to sing like, so Jeff, whitney’sdealer and wrescracker…Shut up!
Whitney, get up and do it the way you know it…

DM - Boston | 7/22/2009, 11:39 pm EST

Good Luck to Whitney on this project.

I know I will listen, I know I will buy. While I do hope that someone reads these (Whitney, Clive, or somebody relevant.) I do hope that you work hard Whitney to get back stronger than ever! This leaked song shows how hard you are working on yourself – Good job sweetie. Looking foward to hearing the other songs.

Keep working hard; we who have been touched by your music all through the years are with you all the way.

You are in my prayers!

TexasPeach | 7/23/2009, 1:01 pm EST

I just listened to the Whitney Houston cut “I Look To You” and the song is very inspirational for me at this time in my life. God is not only the God of second chances but God of ANOTHER chance and this is what he has done for Whitney. I would like to say to the people who have been sending the negative comments, “keep living” and you will need another chance as well. Go Whitney, we’re pulling for you.

Peace

OBVIOUSLY Whitney has moved on with her life. The haters should too.

Whitney is truly a DIVA and I am so happy to have her back. She will do just fine and this album WILL be a huge success.

So Whitney, let the haters be your motivators. Keep God first in your life, your real fans will always be there for you.

Be BLESSED!

E | 8/9/2009, 9:03 am EST

AT LAST! Welcome back, me and everyone else have been waiting for this moment. Her Voice is still Wonderful & powerful..I didn;t like that substance abuse remnark I just read, it’s just ignorant to think that it affects the voice. When you want to talk about something do a proper scientifique research first.

A wise man once said: ” Whatever faults there are in this world, their root is ignorance”.

E | 8/9/2009, 9:06 am EST

TALENTINA..you’ve obviously been living under a HUGE rock..or actually a mountain. lol

deevah | 8/11/2009, 11:03 am EST

Oh well, this CD is gonna be another flop for sure. I doubt she’ll be able to pull off a grand comeback like Mariah did.

Wish her luck and I’m still gonna buy her album. I still love me some whitney.

shakeria | 8/11/2009, 12:35 pm EST

Go whitney you have an amazing voice.Keep up the good work.

Adam | 8/12/2009, 2:04 am EST

I’ve always liked Whitney but I think this music is weak. It just doesn’t sound like a healthy or interested person singing. It sounds morose and I swear I can hear false teeth knocking together. Worst of all, the lyrics make it seem like she’s pandering for the religious dollars.

Althea | 8/12/2009, 2:11 am EST

Whitney I look forward to purchasing the CD. I thrust that this will be the come back album Let’s silence the critics and regain your place on top with the throne. With that beautiful voice God gave you, put it to good use once again.

Larry | 8/13/2009, 12:22 pm EST

Hey Whitney, am really glad you’re back. We missed your wonderful Joy. But what is the “heaven” you’re looking to? You should be clear and say it’s God you’re looking to!

whitney album will be the biggest flop of the comeback history. sorry but the first single is boring… this is not the right album for her.

jrock | 8/31/2009, 2:02 pm EST

I hate to say it, but the comment under me is true…I’m such a big Whitney fan, but this album is boring. Was looking for more. And this is after listening to the entire album on her website.

Dimitrios | 9/1/2009, 4:30 pm EST

Hey guyz … relax and enjoy what she sings … stop comparing and don’t be harsh. No Need. At least show some respect. She was the greatest voice of her era.
And still has is it, considering her age and life. SHE IS A GREAT SINGER whatever we say, like it or not.
Don’t treat Whitney like you did with M. Jackson .. don’t wait for her to die to glorify her. She still is a great artist. Dont treat her like a lifeless PRODUCT MADE IN U.S.A.. Does not honor you. Don’t shoot her.
Just let her do what she can do better: sing in the unique “Whitney Houston” way.

Thank you.
