Rolling Stones, White Stripes, Nirvana Songs Join “Guitar Hero 5″

7/15/09, 7:00 pm EST

The Rolling Stones, Elton John, the White Stripes and Nirvana are among the highlights in the latest wave of rockers who will have songs features on the upcoming Guitar Hero 5 music video game. For the White Stripes, who provide their Get Behind Me Satan opener “Blue Orchid,” and Elton John, whose “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” will be alright for playing, GH5 marks the first time their songs have appeared on a music video game.

Additionally, GH5 will feature an unreleased live recording of Nirvana’s Nevermind track “Lithium,” the Stones’ “Sympathy For The Devil” and an exclusive re-recording of the Love & Rockets’ “Mirror People.” Other standouts include the Police’s “So Lonely,” Sonic Youth’s Rather Ripped track “Incinerate,” the Screaming Trees’ “Nearly Lost You,” Kiss’ “Shout It Out Loud” and our readers’ favorite American Song, Tom Petty’s “American Girl.” Get the complete list of new GH5 additions after the jump.

As Rock Daily reported last week, songs from Bob Dylan, Beck, David Bowie, Beastie Boys and Coldplay will all feature among the 85 playable on-disc tunes on Guitar Hero 5, due out September 1st. We tested out the game at this year’s E3 conference, trying out the new Party Mode and RockFest feature. In addition to GH5, Activision will also release Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Band Hero and DJ Hero by year’s end.

Playing Guitar Hero at a friend’s house for the first time, I couldn’t believe the game had become so popular. The game is basically watching colored dots pass on the screen and pressing the appropriate button for the different colored dots. The fact that music is playing while the player is doing this is irrelevant.

neldom | 7/16/2009, 9:22 am EST

Well then Jethro I suppose aren’t all video games just pressing the right buttons when you are prompted by the screen? Sometimes you don’t even have music to go along…

Jungleland2 | 7/16/2009, 10:50 am EST

Last good music video game was Journey Escape in 1982

Chris | 7/16/2009, 1:04 pm EST

Wow, I cant believe how activision is milking the living shit out of this series,
like seriously, band hero?! Dj Hero?! ( at least this is original..)
and i dunno about you, but this setlist looks pretty lame, like do we really need Bob dylans all along the watchtower when hendrix clearly covered it better?!

catala_alatac | 7/16/2009, 1:06 pm EST

only METAAAL GUITAR HERO!! when??

from catalonia! ;)

sam | 7/16/2009, 1:08 pm EST

dante | 7/16/2009, 2:01 pm EST

very good

john | 7/16/2009, 2:04 pm EST

this setlist looks awful..what is with all the 90’s alt rock?? not of those guys could play guitar…how hard could this game possibly be

Jethro | 7/16/2009, 2:17 pm EST

neldom: No, actually all video games aren’t about merely pressing the right buttons when prompted. Some of them involve strategy and problem solving. It’s also worth noting that most games are at least in some measure at attempt to simulate reality to create a hyperreality (examples include racing simulators and first person shooters). For a game that would like us to believe we are doing something akin to playing music, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc. have nothing at all to do with music. It doesn’t have anything to do with listening.

Jethro | 7/16/2009, 2:19 pm EST

My point is that this game would play the same with the sound turned off.

JARR | 7/16/2009, 2:21 pm EST

I am gonna say that Du Hast is the only song that I would want to play on this setlist.

Chriselian | 7/16/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Sorry Jethro, but listening does plays a big role on this game. Maybe it’s not the greatest manner of impregning music entertainment, but discerning from the experience I’ve adquired playing this game, it really invloves timing, and pre-determination of the note that comes after. It’s not the most complex thing, but it sure can be fun. :)

Chriselian | 7/16/2009, 4:33 pm EST

Guitar Hero needs harder songs and stop putting up boring acoustic slow-pokes.

Brandon | 7/16/2009, 4:34 pm EST

The game looks awesome, the setlist: not so awesome. :( Better get some more metal in there. :P

Brandon | 7/16/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Hmmm… how about some Slayer? Their songs are the only hard ones, lol. Besides for Dragon Force. They don’t need more songs in GH tho. :P Lol

pkens | 7/16/2009, 5:55 pm EST

anybody else content with this list the only thin im worried about is that it better be harder than world tour like there was only like one tough song and it wasn’t even that tough

aona | 7/16/2009, 7:38 pm EST

WOW NICE to see the screaming trees got in there awesome one of my fav bands

Pseudo | 7/17/2009, 2:26 am EST

Garbage, awesome. I figured it be that song or Push It. Either one is fine with me

Now I hope they don’t choose some obscure Bush song. They picked enough obscure songs (to me) already.
Like QotSA, Beck, Beasties. Wtf just buy the rights to “Lost Art of Keeping a Secret”, “Loser” and “Intergalactic” and get on with it! =p

Parker | 7/17/2009, 10:46 am EST
