Behind Shakira’s Hot Electro Groove: The Making of “She Wolf”

7/15/09, 5:12 pm EST

On Shakira’s pulsing new single “She Wolf,” the Colombian superstar transforms into a howling, empowered beast — and drops the term “lycanthropy” (a psychiatric condition where a person believes she can transform into an animal). It’s a fierce piece of electro-pop that the singer took a full month to meticulously mix, but she tells Rolling Stone the original idea arrived in a flash of inspiration. ” ‘She Wolf’ came to me very mysteriously,” she says. “I was in the studio in a bad mood that day, then I got inspired and went to a corner and I wrote the lyrics and the melody in 10 minutes. The image of the she wolf just came to my head, and when I least expected it I was howling and panting.”

“She Wolf” is the first single from Shakira’s October album, which she recorded during a series of 12-hour-a-day sessions mostly in the Bahamas with John Hill (known for producing Santigold’s self-titled debut), Pharrell and other collaborators. She jokes she spent so much time locked away without daylight, “that’s probably why I turned into a she wolf.” But the hard work helped transform her sound from the slithery Latin-tinged pop of “Hips Don’t Lie” to something more glitchy, buzzing and fiercely danceable. “It’s very electronic and dance-oriented, club-oriented,” she says of the disc. “It’s designed for people to have fun and enjoy themselves and forget about their troubles and the crisis.” She says she always wanted to do a bass-heavy record without losing “the fusion, which is something I’m always very interested in — bringing in elements from different cultures. So you’re going to find Indian, Africa, Colombian, Middle Eastern influences, but always with the synthesizers as a dominant element.”

Those Middle Eastern influences are evident on “Good Stuff” and “Why Wait for Later,” two Pharrell tracks that are heavy on percussion and unusual synth tones. “Good Stuff” recalls the producer’s work with Britney Spears on “Slave 4 U,” with its unusual syncopation and revelatory, open chorus, while “Why Wait for Later” is a dancey banger with synths that range from string sounds to blazing bag pipes.

“The worst that can happen to me is repeat myself and repeat the same old formula,” Shakira tells RS, adding that she takes a long time between records “because I really want to be sure every detail makes me happy.” She was very pleased to work once again with Wyclef Jean, who she calls a really good friend. She attributes some of their creative synergy to the fact that “We both come from the developing world and we have been close to extreme poverty.” Pharrell forced her to step outside her box and learn to work more quickly, while Hill introduced her to electro acts like Crystal Castles: “They’re a good example of how electronica can take you to different places.”

Next year Shakira will launch a tour and release a Spanish-language LP, but first there’s the video for “She Wolf.” A few stills from the shoot have made their way to the Net, and the singer confirms, “I am in a cage, but I am showing the desperation of being in it. I got a little carried away, hanging upside down.” But the fact that her improvisation on the shoot led to such wild abandon is only a sign she hit her mark. “Pleasing my ears is my first commitment,” she says. “I always try to connect to my music physically. I have to feel a physical reaction, because if I don’t feel like I’m dancing or reacting, if I don’t feel it here [motions to the pit of her stomach], I don’t stop.”

Juan | 7/16/2009, 8:35 am EST

I hope that spanish album will be more “real shakira” and not like this extrage electronic fusion.anyway its good that she want to make new thing mane pop artist havnt that courage to change.

trisdabit | 7/16/2009, 9:14 am EST

Reminds me of Animal City from Oral Fixation album, isn’t anything new to me, hope to hear better from rest of the album.

Me | 7/16/2009, 11:54 am EST

The song is horrible! I’ve been a fan of Shakira since the beginning but this is terrible! Please go back to your roots! Not buying this album!

JD | 7/16/2009, 11:57 am EST

That sound is one of the worst things I’ve heard in a long time! It’s a bad copy of other music out there! I expected that from britney but not from shakira!

God Awful | 7/16/2009, 12:10 pm EST

This shit is awful.

Brunet | 7/16/2009, 12:11 pm EST

I love how Shakira steps out of her box, and keeps her music fresh. I loved the use of synthesizers on Fijacion Orale with La Pared and Lo Imprescindible (best tracks on the album IMO). I think that people need to keep an open mind. Shakira has a way of blending pop influence with intelligence, which is something that Ms. Spears and her ilk don’t know how to do.

Alex. | 7/16/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Can’t wait to hear the new album! “She Wolf” and “Loba” are both very catchy and very good!

girlypuffs | 7/16/2009, 12:58 pm EST

I love some of Shakira’s other stuff, but this song sucks. It sucks so bad that I almost think this is some kind of joke. Yeah, it’s a parody and Shakira and her crew are going to release the real song after they’ve had a good laugh about the mindless gaggle of drones who will flock to say how great this s*** is just because it is Shakira. The Emperor’s New Clothes, anybody?

Rony Kelbert | 7/16/2009, 1:06 pm EST

‘ i love this song !
She’s hot.

G-dude | 7/16/2009, 1:20 pm EST

She Wolf’s awesome! it’s totally different from her other stuff but it still has a Shakira sound to it. She always manages to come out with new, different, even weird stuff that always makes it to the top of the charts. You F-ING ROCK Shakira!

Fabo Men | 7/16/2009, 1:50 pm EST

She Wolf has become in my favrite song, thank u Shakira for sharing your amazing music

Vykhtor | 7/16/2009, 2:17 pm EST

she talented…

rock | 7/16/2009, 2:19 pm EST

i am so disappointed in her for making such a terrible song…

V. | 7/16/2009, 2:21 pm EST

to whoever mentioned Patrick Wolf a few comments ago..I totally agree..to me its like a Patrick Wolf+Crystal Castles mix dumbed down for the radio..and I don’t mean this in pejorative way, I understand her need to remain commercially viable so I feel she does a better job than most pop artist appropriating left field sounds/styles/techniques and making them palatable for a mainstream audience

beto | 7/16/2009, 2:25 pm EST

she needs to get rid of the fake blonde hair…go back to brown colour. i’ll skip the english cd and wait for the spanish one.

Issac | 7/16/2009, 2:27 pm EST

Yes I agree, The song SUCKS!!!! People are exstatic about “loba” or “She Wolf” just because it’s Shakira who released it, if it had been released by Britney Spears they would be saying how bad it is. Loved the Shakira of PDSB or DELL, but this crap…not so much

GetWithIt | 7/16/2009, 2:29 pm EST

The song is definitely fresh, as far as Shakira’s style goes. As a long time fan, I’m very pleased that she chose to collaborate with other artists to give her sound a modern spin. Sounds like other stuff? What doesn’t? If it beat makes you move, who cares. The voice is Shakira and that’s wonderful twist.

Giselle | 7/16/2009, 2:56 pm EST

At first I didn’t like the new song but now that I have listend to it multiple times I think it’s okay. Not worth buying though….

Issac | 7/16/2009, 2:58 pm EST

Oh 1 ,more thing: She says that she doesn’t like to repeat the same formula? Well, that’s not true. What about ALL the duets she’s done in the past 2 years? She started out with a DUET with Alejandro Sanz in “La Tortura”, she folowed that with the infamous “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef, then came Beyonce with “Beautiful Liar” (another Crappy song), followed by “Te Lo Agradezco Pero No” with Alejandro Sanz (again). She did a collaboration with Miguel bose on his album “papito” singing “Si tu no Vuelves”, followed by “la Maza” with Mercedes Soza and she will have yet another Duet with Calle 13 for her next spanish album. So much for not following “the same old formula” right??? This is not counting the unreleased (thank GOD) tracks she did with Wyclef for his album.

Rebecca | 7/16/2009, 3:08 pm EST

Shakira is so unique and talented…Great song! Fresh and different but still sounds like Shakira. I can’t wait for the album…

Jesus | 7/16/2009, 3:45 pm EST

AMAZING! shes so talented! all you haters need to relax… not EVERYONE needs to love the song or her… to each their own, but rude comments is ridiculous.

allen | 7/16/2009, 3:59 pm EST

OH MY GOD , I LOVE THIS SONG !
Everytime I listen to it I say :
Shakira you are so original.
who the fuck give you that PERFECT brain ?
you are like woooow !
congratulations.

emrah | 7/16/2009, 4:10 pm EST

as everybody sees, this song is different from other shaki songs..but when i listened this,i was dissapointed so much because it was a long time that she had been in the studio and i was expecting an album that is better than the oral fixation but i think it is not going to be…she says she tried a new thing new sound but this is not shakira i think…these electro sounds hide her powerful voice.

cazzie | 7/16/2009, 4:25 pm EST

I luv this song!! Though I like the spainsh verison of it better. Its still good. The thing is sometimes she sounds good like in hips dont lie. But other times when she sings english its really crap.

From a TRUE fan | 7/16/2009, 5:01 pm EST

This is Shakira at her best. She’s innovative, original, creative…music evolves and so does Shakira and no matter what genre or musical fusion she uses the final product is a perfect album. Good and bad opinions are valid but absurd comments like Issac’s are just plain stupid. If you don’t like the music than do not listen to it!

Mike | 7/16/2009, 5:10 pm EST

You people don’t know a hot track if a werewolf bit you on your asses the song is awesome.

jess | 7/16/2009, 5:24 pm EST

The song sucks. And i love electro- retro pop, but this is almost desperate to be cool.

wired lotus | 7/16/2009, 9:27 pm EST

This is the worst song ever!! I guess she ran out of ideas and she is copying other artists. Desperately trying to sell records by selling sex. I think the video is derrogatory to women as “Loba” can be replaced with a different 4 letter word in spanish… “*uta”

Neilditto | 7/16/2009, 9:32 pm EST

My God, I totally love this song, Thank you Shakira for the new CD. I bet there are more hits in it.

Shakira Spears | 7/16/2009, 10:35 pm EST

She Wolf is a fad song, I’m big Shaki fan but I’m already tired of this stupid song.

Her English album will be crap, I hope her Spanish ablum will be more like the REAL Shaki.

ERICK | 7/16/2009, 11:39 pm EST

SHAKIRA ERES SIMPLEMENTE THE BEST …NO LE AGAS CASO A LOS ESTUPIDOS Y ABSURDOS COMENTARIOS DE ESA JENTE QUE NO SABE NADA….ADEMAS QUIEN LOS ENTIENDE ….NO IMPORTA A MI ME GUSTA Y ME GUSTARA POR SIEMPRE TU MUSICA Y AL QUE NO LE GUSTE QUE CHINGE A SU MADRE ….Y QUE NO TE ESCUCHE ASI DE SIMPLE…. SHAKI YOU ARE THE BEST KEEP UP WITH THE GOOD STUFF…. TE AMO SHAKI

SAM | 7/17/2009, 1:05 am EST

ALL THE PEOPLE THAT SAY THAT SHAKIRA CHANGED, AND THAT SHE’S TTRYING NEW STYLES IS JUST STUPID, BECAUSE IN LAUNDRY SERVICE SHE HAS AN ELECTRONIC SONG “READY FOR THE GOD TIMES”, IN ORAL FIXATION SHE HAS TWO, “LAS DE LA INTUICION” AND “ANIMAL CITY”. SHE WOLF IS VERY SIMILAR TO ANIMAL CITY, IS LIKE A SECOND PART…. FOR ME IS NOT SOMETHING NEW, SO PLEASE BEFORE YOU SPEAK, YOU BETTER THINK.

La Belladonna | 7/17/2009, 2:52 am EST

Wow. it is a great song and for all the haters- this isn’t the first time Shakira has done a song that has an electronic/ dance beat to it. Can anyone say “ready For the good times” Las de Intuicion” but mind you this is DIFFERENT from those songs because this has a slight techno beat. It what I call “clubbish” but it is not a horrible song. the beat, hook and melody are catchy and the whole point of the song is probably just to make ppl get up and dance which it did. If you didnt get up and dance it’s probably b/c you cant dance. And just remember just b/c you don’t like it, that doesn’t mean it is horrible. And plz do not ever compare Shakira to Britney Spears, it’s an insult.

ray from Sonora México | 7/17/2009, 3:11 am EST

I love this new song, it has a great sound… much better than other plastics songs from other artist… a proposito, si dicen que shakira le copio a britney spears, eso es estupido, ya que shakira es más talentosa (menos plastica) y si asi fuera, Britney le copio a Christina Aguilera en su back to basic tour (and the “hurt music video”), so think before you speak………

ray from Sonora México | 7/17/2009, 3:14 am EST

in the last comment I was talking about the concept of the cage in which she wolf want to escape… no pienso quedarme a tu lado pidiendo disculpas, la vida me ha dado un hambre voraz y tu apenas me das caramelos auuuuuuuuuuuuu

emrah | 7/17/2009, 5:15 am EST

actually to argue this song is good or bad is useless..as we know it changes people to people..everyone says his or her opinion according to his style..if you find this kind of music close to you, then you listen and you like it that’s all..and comparing shakira with britney is stupid..we are talking about talent not something else….

Dilan | 7/17/2009, 6:47 am EST

I’m such a big fan of shakira, I went to the concert in amsterdam Oral Fixation tour, i’m fan of her since 7 years old and i’m now 14 years old so it’s long..my room is full of her posters and all.. When i hear she had made a new song named “She wolf” i was so exited to hear it i couln’t wait for it at the first listening it was bad that was what i found about it bad.. but listen to it again and again it began to sound really good.. she don’t need always make songs like she did before, but about the video i’m so so sad :(
that is really not shakira?..
it’s such a big chaince! and i don’t like it all and all the clothes she wears and all and i find also that she likes on that video on britney spears and i hate britney :S.. I really hope her other songs won’t be like this way and sure the video clip.. [ ps: Sorry fot my english ]

carolina | 7/17/2009, 4:25 pm EST

Very talented and charismatic. Great music even when she has to appear to be another Madonna, it is not all her fault that she has to do this videos since that’s what most of the people want to see from a female singer, sexy. So for the people who look at her talent more than her sexual appearance do exactly that, for sure you will find it in her.

Lobito | 7/18/2009, 12:03 am EST

The Spanish version is actually much better. She is fitting the times. Just like the mid 70s to early 80s, the times call for lighter dancier beats. Her earlier stuff was more dense and rock-like (and better), but she is producing what people want. She’s still an original though (y buenísima, cará-o!). Give the rest of the album a chance. This single is a little silly, but fun.

Ryan | 7/18/2009, 11:35 am EST

I used to love Shakira but I almost vomited when I heard this song. So very very bad. This song is a bad joke. Maybe the Spanish version is better because the English lyrics are kinda strange if you are a native english speaker, like maybe they were translated by google or something.

I would eat out of her ass any day! I would let her pee all over me if she wanted to. I worship her body.

Oh My Gosh.
What the F is up with the awoooo part?

HORRIBLE.

Why does everyone either worship Shakira or else hate her? The song has a strange sound to it but I won’t knock something just because it is strange, and I love the concept of a neglected woman (or a man for that matter)letting out her (or his) inner sexual animal appetite.

As for the dancing, some of it is robotic and dull, but she has some really freaky cool moves mixed in there. Which look awesome on her amazing body.

I admit I go on and on but someone has to submit a REASONABLE opinion of the artist who doesn’t have a ridiculous celebrity crush and who doesn’t simply hate her as a matter of personal taste!

maybe shakira is trying to be a latin version of what britney was supposed to be if britney had talent. i dont think that is the case but either way i think shes succeded.

Shakira always takes time to make a pretty good record. Her music is pure inspiration and I’ll never find some kind of magic like she does. I, being a latin boy, think she is really the queen for us. Shakira aqui en mexico te adoramos, siempre lo hicimos, siempre lo hacemos y siempre lo haremos.
auuuuuuuuuu

I just don’t understand when people say it’s not the real her or she doesn’t sound like the her old self. People fail to realize that artists grow up too. Duh they are not going to sing about the same old things neither are they going to keep the same old sound. Each record they make they evolve. They go through transformations in their public and private life. Their views change. That happens to everyone in life artist or not.People were outraged when Snoop came out with the single Sensual Seduction saying he ain’t the same. Well duh he ain’t the same he has a family and things goin on in his life than being gansta!People somtimes change for the better or worse, but we can’t do anything about. Personally I’ve never really liked her songs but this really changed my mind. Like the lyrics and sounds.

anonymous | 9/1/2009, 10:58 pm EST

If u don’t like it then don’t bother to listen to it.. ok? this is getting ridiculous with all u non-lifers sitting on the chair and type terrible comments about someone that is an idol and an inspiration for them.. AND u DARE compare Shakira with Britney? The slutty little drunk missy that only knows to cry and breakdown to attract attention to her? u serious now? go listen to ur favorite music but dont come here and just throw ur empty words and insult people like this.

anonymous | 9/1/2009, 11:02 pm EST

and another thing? At least she sings LIVE.. if Britney knows whats that is.. L-I-V-E is the word.. lol where the world is going anyway? Comparing real artists that can produce music and lyrics with ”artists” like Shitney

anonymous | 10/4/2009, 7:21 pm EST

i personally think the track is very chic and very well done. i admit it took me listening to it a few times but I truly think that Shakira did a great job composing the lyrics and the background electro-pop and made something truly outstanding.

sabrina | 10/18/2009, 5:18 am EST

she has no respect for music and music lovers!!! if you were a musician you will understand how low and unrespectful this is to people who are real composers and talented singers songwriters! I wish the public were more quality demanding . They media is force feeding us with something until we like it!!! and most people fall for it! is so very sad!

Kaizo | 10/18/2009, 4:52 pm EST

I can’t believe this song actually made it into the top10 in the US, this is proof that music has lost it’s way, bloody teeny boppers and kids are running the music industry, we losing all the quality. It’s sad for real.

AVZ | 11/1/2009, 7:31 pm EST
