While Panic! At the Disco fans continue to mourn Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker’s departure from the band, Ross talked to MTV to reiterate that creative differences over the direction of Panic!’s third album caused the split. In the past few months, tensions between members during the writing process split Panic! into two camps: Ross & Walker versus singer Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith. For a period, the two factions weren’t talking at all, but Ross tells MTV that late last month, he met with Smith to discuss the future of the band. It was then that both parties agreed that a split would be the best move for everyone involved. “I guess it got to the point where there might have been too many cooks in the kitchen,” Ross said.

“Brendon’s more of a Peter Gabriel fan, and I’m more of a Ray Davies fan,” Ross told MTV of the two songwriters’ different styles, noting that Urie is more polished pop-leaning while Ross prefers the classic rock sound of bands like Davies’ the Kinks. “Brendon has always been a fan of pop music, but that’s such a broad term, because I guess I would say I would be too, but in a different way. Jon and I are still very much influenced by the Beatles and Beach Boys stuff and the Kinks and stuff like that,” Ross said. “And so that’s the stuff we were writing at my house … that’s the stuff we’re going to make now.

While Ross and Walker are on good terms with their former bandmates, Ross says he still hasn’t talked to his Decaydance Records boss and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, who has frequently Twittered about how the new Urie/Smith demos are a welcome return to Panic!’s A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out sound. Ross adds that he and Walker are working hard on their own project, recording with Pretty. Odd. producer Rob Mathes. Urie and Smith, meanwhile, are currently demoing songs for the band’s third album, and as Rock Daily reported have promised fans that their tour dates opening for No Doubt and Blink-182 won’t be affected by the split. Panic! also resurrected their exclamation point after a brief hiatus.

I love Peter Gabriel, Beach Boys, and The Kinks.

Panic At The Disco sucks.

coachmaddog | 7/14/2009, 11:51 am EST

Do they even know who the Kinks and the BB’s really are? Pretentious twats.

trevor | 7/14/2009, 11:53 am EST

they should do us a favour and all of them should quit music

Hopefully | 7/14/2009, 12:01 pm EST

Hopefully the faction with Ryan and John will go in a completely different direction. Panic!’s sound was just fucking annoying.

Phil | 7/14/2009, 12:26 pm EST

That guy sounds like an idiot…he says he’s less polished and then mentions the beach boys and the beatles…wow they were just punk rock pioneers…what a bag of douche…and yes what a waste of my typing they sucked to begin with and Pete Wentz saying that the new Panic songs are good is like hearing Jeffery Dahlmer talk about Emeril’s cooking…he wouldn’t know good music if it hit him in the head, he should stick to making clothes and dressing like a girl.

Panic! at the Disco are just great. It’s a shame that they broke up. Now that there’s beef, i’ll have to pick a side. Right now i’m leaning towards the band with the name.

“they should do us a favor and all of them should quit music” – AMEN TREVOR.

Joe Blow | 7/14/2009, 1:37 pm EST

Panic! sucks. So does Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy. I don’t understand why people like their music. No substance at all.

Oh yeah, sure... | 7/14/2009, 8:37 pm EST

Oh yeah, such a HUGE conflict… Beach Boys and The Kinks vs. Peter Gabriel. Three sounds that are IMPOSSIBLE to blend, right? That’s like a band breaking up because one member likes Britney Spears and the other likes Miley Cyrus. Why don’t they just admit the truth and say they can’t stand Brandon and Spencer anymore? Or if you can’t admit to that, at least keep your mouth shut altogether instead of coming up with lame-ass excuses that insult our intelligence.

rachee | 7/14/2009, 10:04 pm EST

none of you know what your saying about panic at thye disco! they were amazing and still will b it just is the fact that ryan wanted something from brenden dosne mean he is a d-dag 4 wanting something else… panic will still be panic and the new band that ryan and jon r doing will be AMAZING too

TheCoz | 7/15/2009, 12:28 am EST

Thank you for those two songs. Goodbye.

TheCoz | 7/15/2009, 12:29 am EST

I think the redaction of the “!” after “Panic” was the undoing of this band.

moo | 7/15/2009, 5:03 am EST

Panic! is AWESOME. Cant wait for the new album! I loved the fever you cant sweat out sound better than prety. odd. so I’m totaly happy. Im happy the ! is back.

Rea | 7/15/2009, 7:20 pm EST

Hmm sounds to me like they are attempting to sound like they have a superior music taste to the rest of the band. Really the whole lot of them are a bunch of whiny mainstream twats with no talent and create music that sounds like computer generated dying animals.

isobel | 7/16/2009, 2:19 pm EST

I LISTEN TO THEIR NEW SINGLE oh Glory and it’s awsome!!!!i’m so happy !!THE Fever You Can’t Sweat Out IT’S MY FAVOURITE CD.PRETTY ODD sucks! AT LAST!!!! p!atd is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous | 7/18/2009, 10:16 am EST

DUDES! Panic! doesn’t suck, they are awesome! i’m sad they split up, i loved a fever you can’t sweat out AND pretty. odd. loads, it was great how versatile they were, but you guys who are all like oh they suck they should stop making music don’t even LISTEN to this music probably. the lyrics are fantastic and you are just a prat who probably sits in your room crying that nobody likes the music you try to make.

Lstr21 | 7/20/2009, 10:17 pm EST

My God People, If you just hate panic SOO much, Why are you even on the article?

Love You Panic! Amazing Band! Awesome new demo! sory about the split. :(

Dylan | 7/21/2009, 9:54 am EST

OK, u guys r fkn retarded.
There is nothing wrong with panic, they are all in their early 20’s and writing and playing there own music to thousands of fans world wide, and they dont sell out a write radio singles. everyone bagging them is just are under achieving musicians who has no talent at all. Im pretty sure they have talent, brendon can sing well as coca cola (perhaps the biggest company in the world)recently just hired him to sing in the new marketing campaign song, and spencer is a very good drummer with a wide range. so yeh ur all fkheads, just cause a band doesnt stand out to you, it doesnt mean they are talentless

andy | 7/22/2009, 11:06 am EST

i hope there dont break up the new song sounds so good plz dont break up

rob | 7/23/2009, 12:15 pm EST

“Oh Glory” Is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard in my life. If Ryan and Jon are going garage band, but keeping a 60’s influence, then I’ll follow their music instead, and I hope their album does well.

Brendan and Spencer seem to be heading back to the cheep technemo route again and I bet their album is going to flop. To go from “pretty. odd” to this new crap they recorded is just sad. Panic at the disco is dead.

joe | 7/23/2009, 11:02 pm EST

‘oh glory’ is the biggest piece of crap I’ve ever heard come out of this band. this is like 2004 fever all over again- only worse

how can you go from pretty odd to this crap? the techno/emo/fallout boy is, and has been well on its way out.

PS- that ‘new perspective song’ sounds like one of those 90’s alternative bands..cant quite remember which..oh right, all of them.

Anonymous | 7/24/2009, 5:26 pm EST

PANIC AT THE DISCO SUCK DONKEY BALLS. THEY’RE SUCH POSERS. AND FINALLY THEY’RE DEAD. GOOD RIDDANCE

babsie | 7/28/2009, 3:42 am EST

I love a fever u cant sweat out more than pretty.odd…. Its nice to know they went back to that kind of music.. itso too sad they had to split… cant wait for their new album….

lala | 8/1/2009, 6:51 pm EST

i dont get y ppl who h8 panic even read the article? wuts weirder is wen ppl criticize their new sound after pretty.odd. pretty.odd was like, the ryan ross album, k? it wasnt ever rlly panic anyway. dont get me rong, i luved it, but panic isnt “dead”. its more like resurrected!

dan | 8/2/2009, 2:19 pm EST

yep, really shows how little braincells the “fever” p.a.t.d. fans have when you read a comment like the one below me. Simple, for Pretty. Odd, Panic got influenced by the beatles, rather than pop. Maybe if you listened to classic rock/the beatles rather than their emo misery album fever, you’d be smarter.

Caroline | 8/3/2009, 6:06 pm EST

You know, I actually find the split very interesting because when Pretty.Odd. came out it sort of split the fan base. You had the die hard Fever fans drop the band with disgust, fans of the band that embraced Pretty.Odd.’s sound, and new fans that adored Pretty.Odd. and hated Fever.

Now I guess everyone is happy…sort of…

Personally, I prefer Ryan and Jon’s band The Young Veins. While it may be more Beatles-esque, I find P!ATD (yes, now with the exclamation point back in tack…) to be much more generic emo pop sounding that is all over the radio. At least before when Ryan wrote the lyrics and Brendon’s vocals were a little rough they stood out, they brought something different to the table. Now they sound just like every other band.

I will, however, give both bands a chance when their cds come out, I just am leaning a lot more towards TYV judging on what I’ve heard so far.

Pete Wentz just died in a traffic accident!

axnxaxtxhxexixuxm | 10/1/2009, 11:10 pm EST

hey, shut up
panic! at the disco is fucking amazing, but only when the !. i personaly like a fever you cant sweat out waayy more than pretty.odd. they need to go back to their older music! lol

Hayley | 10/27/2009, 11:32 am EST

It is very evident that Ryan Ross has been influenced by The Beatles & older style rock ‘n roll. I listened to “New Perspective” & thought it was okay, but then I heard “Change” and it grabbed me right away. I loved it. I guess my personal taste is more for the older styles rather than modern styles. I like Ross’s guitar solo in “Change”. And I much prefer Prett.Odd to A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, though I did like both.

Hayley | 10/27/2009, 11:37 am EST

Also-I very much agree with everything Caroline said…very well put.
