I saw Ozzy at the ‘free’ Ozzfest a couple years back in Kansas City. Remembering that show, I can also say that it sounded like BLS, but that’s only because Zakk took over on a lot of the vocals because Ozzy is shot vocally. Good luck to both of them, but I’ll stick with Zakk in the long run.

I enjoy both Ozzy and BLS. The past couple Ozzy ablums Zakk has just been more of a hired gun than a true bandmate and contributor anyway.

Even though you have to give Zakk credit for his loyalty to Ozzy, it may be the right call in the end. Some say that Ozzy’s stuff is sounding like Black Label. The real problem might be that BLS’s Mafia and other works were better then “Black Rain.” Which you can’t blame entirely on Zakk for not wanting to sit around for 6 years between records and keep his best material on the shelf. Besides his own creative outlet to release Zakk also has a family to feed as well and didn’t have the benefit of reality TV or reuniting with Black Sabbath to fall back on.

Interesting that Ozzy mention John 5 since he was playing with Rob Zombie when they opened (and most say blew away) Ozzy on the last tour. Ozzy’s been known to go after unknown talent and the one time he didn’t, it produced only one song. (My Little Man with help from Steve Vai.) I’m sure there is no shortage of shredders waiting to take their place with Ozzy, so J5 isn’t the only option.

Another interesting note: a few years ago Jake E Lee (guitarist on Bark at the Moon and the Ultimate Sin) posted that he had been talking to Ozzy again. A lot of Ozzy fans felt Lee hasn’t gotten his due credit between Rhodes and Wylde and would welcome a new record with Ozzy. Ozzy has never spoken well of Lee or that era of his career. Then again he may question should he go after a young gun that the younger generation will gravitate towards or try to please his hard core audience that has tended to wane after the reality show craze. If he goes for the latter Lee is a great choice.

Ozzy started out in Black Sabbath and in his solo career with Tony Iommi and Randy Rhoads, two iconic musicians who broke new ground for rock guitar playing. I think that the ultimate for Ozzy right now would be to find a present day equivalent of that, someone who can bring fresh new style to metal guitar playing.

Zakk is not washed up and can still actually sing. He’s better off playing with BLS than Ozzy anyway.

Hope both do well in theire seperate ways. Ozzy can still write and sing, maybe not quite like he used to be able to sing, but that just comes with the ageing process. Hope Zakk uses the time to make another Pride & Glory cd. If you haven’t listened to it yet, do so immediately cause it kicks ass.

Ozzy is playing with fire here, but hey, what can he do? His last two or three albums have not been anywhere near up to par. Meanwhile, BLS is still making killer music. I am not a big fan of John 5, the guy can shred, but his material is awful. Just mindless shredding for the sake of shredding. His solo album was the most tedious thing I have ever heard. Ozzy is not musically intelligent enough to write music and needs someone like Zakk to help with song writing duties.

Zakk Wylde is a phenominal guitarist. The poor studio output was result of the producers brought in to ‘manufacture’ hits. Ozzy’s albums have been so overproduced. The problem is that Ozzy doesn’t have a band. He has session musicians being directed by a producer. The result has been garbage. Bringing in someone else would be helpful, but they need to allow the guitarist to craft the music. I do no think that Zakk was given this freedom to make heavy songs. John 5 would be a good addition if he’s allowed the freedom to write good heavy riffs and shred. Otherwise it’ll still be garbage.

I like Zakk Wylde because I haven’t seen or heard anyone else play Randy Rhoads’ music like he does. He does it nearly dead on, just in a different tuning. I think Zakk Wylde should stay with Ozzy for one more album. The album should also include Ozzy’s former guitar player Jake E. Lee. In my opinion, that would be one of his best albums like Blizzard of Ozz, Bark at the Moon, and No More Tears.

Ozzy could probably get almost any guitarists he wants to play on his next studio album: Slash, Daron Malakian, Kerry King, Joshua Homme, Dave Navarro, Kirk Hammett, etc. Trying to find the next Randy Rhoads is a waste of time. He should just record with guitarists he already knows are great.

I think Buckethead would be a very suitable replacement. He can definitely write songs and he is technically superior to Zakk.

It’s true that Zakk may need to be replaced for no other reason than to re-invent Ozzy’s sound a bit. Zakk has been with Ozzy on every album since No Rest for the Wicked, which he recorded when he was around 19. Hopefully, Oz will discover a new unknown guitarist that will bring a vibrance back to his voice. Zakk’s work with the Oz man is always amazing, but for both men, a visit outside the gate could do them both some good.
They’ve been a hell of a pair for 20 years.

I got “No Rest” when it was released in 1988. I listened to it then and loved the guitar playing mostly. But, the songs SUCKED. “Crazy Babies”?? Are YOU high, “Zakk is GOD!” I learned licks and riffs off the album, I’m not ignorant and like I mentioned in my previous post: Zakk Wylde is super talented. But, instrumental skill does NOT equal GOOD MUSIC. Those songs are a far ass cry from “brilliant” regardless of having very good guitar playing on them. You’re letting your creepy love for Zakk Wylde get in the way of rational thought and reading comprehension. Yes, Zakk has always been there for Ozzy. In fact, when you think about it: He’s the longest tenured guitarist in Ozzy’s entire career. But, the times I’ve heard Ozzy’s more recent material (past 15 years), it seems to me that he has lost whatever it was that made him make good songs/albums. What I’m saying is: Zakk Wylde’s guitar playing is not going to make Ozzy’s material any better or worse. To me, the really good material stopped with “Diary of a Madman”. If Ozzy has the desire to just mix it up and try someone new, why not? Most old time Ozzy fans lost interest when there was no more Randy Rhoads anyway. No coincidence that the material took a MAJOR nosedive after Randy. I’m not just talking about the “guitar playing” either. The entire scope: Song construction, lyrics, production. Frankly, I couldn’t give a damn who that talentless clown Osbourne recruits. He’s been extremly fortunate over the years in having very competent musicians to work with, and he can’t sing. In Sabbath, everything was written by Tony and Geezer; Osbourne was just the front man, and he wasn’t too good at that either. Now, as for his solo stuff; I think Jake E. Lee is one of the best rock guitarists around, and the most talented one that he’s been with (and yes, I have seen Iommi, Rhoads, Wylde etc). Jake does deserve an awful lot more credit than he gets.

I love reading these comments. Do some of you even play guitar? The statement Zakk cant write songs is crazy. Have you listned to Pride and Glory or Book of shadows?? Idiots. How about anytyhing ozzy has done for the last 20 yrs?? Ozzy’s problem is in production. The last few albums were produced by individuals who have no intrest in making an Ozzy album. You stick with what works.Why not try Rick Rubin.The others who say Jake sucks do not have a clue about music either, same with Johnny 5.Zakk will and always be one of the best out there and will probally flourish even more without ozzy.

I’m probably not the “typical” Zakk fan because I am a 52 y/o female that really discovered Zakk about three years ago when a friend brought over “Book of Shadows”. I’ve never had music grab my soul as much as that CD. At that time, I really didn’t know who Zakk was but quickly learned. I have to say that Zakk’s earlier stuff is my absolute favorite, as mentioned Book of Shadows but also Pride and Glory. This is by far some of the best music I’ve EVER heard and I grew up in the 70’s which was the greatest rock era. I still like BLS and saw them for the first time in April of this year in Atlanta. With Zakk’s guitar, piano, mandolin, harmonica, lyrics and vocal skills, I think it would serve him best to part ways with Ozzy. I think he has been an ultimate friend to Ozzy by staying with him. Maybe he can go back and pick up the heart and soul of that earlier music, maybe the soft side of Zakk. I’ve seen countless comments of admiration for that music. He has multi tasked for so long, he could do that and BLS. I just hope Zakk sees this as most of his fans do and that is as a welcome change.

I say, Instead of finding a new guitarist for Ozzy, why not let the fans that The Ozzman has inspired over the years to play guitar, step up and show Ozzy how He has impacted them, by getting a chance to play with OZZY live on stage.
The fans know how the music should be played, and will play Ozzy’s music the way it was meant to be played. The way Ozzy intended it sound.
Not only would this connect Ozzy to his fans even more, but it would give the fans a way to connect with Ozzy in such a way that they would never had a chance to do before.

Who the hell is John5? What the f*** is wrong with Ozzy? Has Ozzy ever heard how much praise Zakk has given to him in interviews etc..? Not only does Ozzy have the best guitar player on the planet, it seems a real friend as well. I guess that shit doesn’t matter to Sharon. The Oz man needs some new blood. I think John 5 is a good technical player but Ozzy never has hired a shredder guitarist. Zakks time is better spent on his own projects anyway. Nobody’s talking about Joe Holmes. I heard that for the “Down to Earth” album, Joe had recorded everything, then was kicked out at the last minute, when Zakk re-recorded everything. I saw Holmes in 2000, and he could play all the Randy stuff as well…just used a Strat instead of a Les Paul…heard Holmes studied under Randy Rhodes as well. Would be a good fit. Whatever happened to Joe Holmes?

i don’t blame ozzy for this(in my opinion0 really questionable move. this is definitely sharon’s doing. ozzy doesn’t have anything to do with the “business aspect’ of his band. sharon is the manager and has the final say in everything.

i have loved ozzy all my life, but i haven’t followed him nearly as much since the “ozzmosis” album which i believe is by far the worst album he ever made.

zakk didn’t lkike the album that much either and even told ozzy that his “hardcore fans” wouldn’t like it and damn it if he wasn’t dead on accurate.

i don’t enjoy going to ozzy shows anymore unless zakk is there. who wants to pay top dollar to hear a guy that can’t sing live anymore and half the time ends up forgetting the words.

however, maybe this is a blessing. zakk will have more time for black label, which is definitely my favorite band. and sharon, not ozzy, will realize she made a HUGE MISTAKE by letting zakk go.

people will still go to ozzy shows no doubt, but how long will they keep going when his live shows start implementing “STAYING ALIVE”.

ozzy has sold out for sure. let’s all just hope and pray that zakk stays true to himself, the music, and most of all, the fans that continue to love and support his band and BLACK LABEL FAMILY.

Ozzy should make one more album with different guitarists (including Zakk) Tour one more time, and retire. He has nothing to prove anymore. He can just make studio albums and he won’t need to tour for them. Ozzy can relax now and enjoy his golden years. He deserves it. Run Ozzfest and do the occasional live gig. Love Ya Ozzy.

Ozzy needs Zakk. Even if the songs sound like BLS. I know I noticed it when I first heard 11 Silver and thought the solo sounded damn close to battering ram from 1919 Eternal. Then again from what Ive heard about 1919 Eternal, those songs were presented to Ozzy and He said it sounded like a BLS album not an Ozzy record. That album alone is in my opinion one of the greatest metal albums ever and Ozzy should have recorded it.

I understand where Zakk is coming from because he loves Ozzy and He got his big break there. But I also Understand why he says if he wants to be a pussy he can go to hell. Zakk has made ozzy records great without him they are gonna be lame as hell.

Ozzy and Zakk were a legendary duo and this split only waters down the legend of Oz.

The only 2 people that have ever driven me to be such an ozzy fan were the 2 guitarist that matter. RANDY RHOADS AND ZAKK WYLDE… sorry ozzy your decisions are very poor. im afraid to say zakk completes your band with much higher and more focused standards than ozzy. I do agree his stuff now adays… sounds alot diffrent than the no more tears album. but to keep in mind zakk is a very successfull musician and its definetly a positive to know his sound is still progresssing. im in the belief that zakk has a wayssss of guitar playinng before he hits his peak. in other words- ZAKK IS BEAUTIFUL FUCKING ANIMAL… so praise him and eat cheez at his feet.

OZZY SUCKS BLS FOREVER

I like Zakk a lot but it’s definitely time for a change. No rest for the Wicked & No More Tears were great albums but it’s been a downhill slide from there. Not that it’s Zakk’s fault but a change was badly needed & a new guitarist is a start. BLS will give us all the Zakk we need.

I think Zakk will be the one who benefits from not being with Ozzy anymore. Ozzy is dead in the water and has been for years. I’m unsure why he would even consider making a new album. Zakk is still young and hungry, Ozzy is old and overfed. I will say, people need to quit sniffing Zakk’s ass on these comments. Yeah, he’s a great guitarist, we get it. I just saw him live a few weeks back…the music was pretty generic. Of course, the solos were awesome and a couple ok riffs. But, many on here seem to believe that he would make a new Ozzy album KICK ASS. Because Ozzy writes garbage, the guitar playing would be about the only highlight. Lyrics will suck, production will be pop-metal sounding and there will probably be alot of keyboard padding on there MIXED with “heavy metal” guitar. That’s a recipe for bullshit music that probably will get Sharon’s stamp of approval. I can no longer tolerate her. If Ozzy would just properly retire from music or maybe just do the occasional Sabbath show maybe we wouldn’t have to hear about her anymore. Don’t they have enough money yet? Zakk: Move on, make your own music with or without your pinch harmonics and be proud. You’ve had an honorable tour of duty playing for the Prince of Dampness. You deserve better; Ozzy and Sharon deserve their fanbase NOT buying their bullshit records.

Ozzy thinks he sounds like BLS I always thought I could here Ozzy in BLS because Zakk admires him so much. Whatever the case Zakk is great and will have no problem making more great music with or without Ozzy. I personally liked Black Rain you can’t blame Zakk for it not selling as well as they hoped it would. ZAKK RULES GET BETTER SOON.

I think zakk needs to work on bls and support his new release best of skullage. I really think Ozzy is regretting not making that NEW Black Sabbath album now. But if Ozzy Calls of the stupid lawsuit against the BLACK SABBATH Toni Iommi a album could be in the works and Iommi can definately Carry Him thru just look at the new Album with DIO TDYK. Anyway Ozzy Needs a Guitarist who can play well and have backing vocals i suggest LEAF HOUNDS luke rayner he is young and FRESH.

I agree with many. Old Sharon smells the Money “Crazy” Train melting the boiler, as the Ozz-man Legacy LITERALLY Struggles to remain a musical force. I think our first taste was the “retirement” 1993 that then led to 1995’s Ozzmosis. Then the Reunion only turned up 2 new Sab songs. then some genius morons tried to turn Ozzy into the Offspring until Ozzy Himself Turned to Zakk to try and save the effort. Then Sharon tried to fire Zakk over his beard that followed (post Rock Star movie) (that move by Sharon in itself should be a hint of who’s running what) One BIG moment that to me truly showed that Ozzy’s days were growing numbered, and Sharon was at the helm–The “Iron” Ozz Fest. That to me is a defining moment in 2 different British Metal Phenoms. A secret Jelousy from Sharon?? Ozzy seems to be Irrelevant now. Reserved to TV show slapstick sellout. Iron Maiden–Has Literally leaped Into the Spotlight, as a World Wide Mainstream force by doing what they do best. Making albums, and delivering to there fans. Flight 666 the Movie–covering a tour that gave new younger fans a chance to see what an older generation saw during the 80’s, While Ozzy rerecorded the Bob Daisley/Lee Kerslak/Rudy Sarzo/Tommy Aldridge tracks a few years ago, ruining those albums. thats just my take. I side with Zakk. Hmmm, Kinda like the Eddie Van Halen/David Lee roth thing here!! in reverse.

zakk is a great guitar player, but he is not why people go to ozzfest. you cant deny that ozzy’s music sounds much more like BLS than black sabbath( not a bad thing though). I dont think he needs to lose zakk .

I think there is more to this that Ozzy’s music sounding like BLS. Ozzy is not as good as he used to be on stage but I go to see HIM..not Zakk try to steal the show. And I remember seeing an interview with Zakk saying he was put here on earth to “protect” Ozzy..like Ozzy is COMPLETELY helpless and needs his diaper changed. Ozzy is still a man (an old man) and it seemed like Zakk was trying to demasculinize him and I think Ozzy got that sense too, like people talking about what to do with their grandparents while they’re right there in the room within earshot. No More Tears is Ozzy’s best album and Zakk is as good as anybody I’ve ever heard on it but his style seemed to change after that and I have gotten SICK AND TIRED of his pinch harmonics and he has lost his magic every bit as much as Oz himself. This is a much needed change for LOTS of reasons.

Ozzy with or without Zakk will be awesome, and Zakks doing great shit with BLS so I think together or apart as a fan Im getting great music one way or the other.

Basically I will narrow it down… Zakk is great in everything that he does and will do in the future. I think Ozzy needs to stop now. After seeing the new footage from the LA festival and Jimmy Kimmel, the guy cannot sing anymore. Maybe you should do the Osbourne show again. Whatever you had is now lost. I hope Zakk gets better soon and gets on the road again. Can’t wait to hear the new stuff. At least Ozzy could have gotten a guitar player with a unique sound other than Gus G. that is trying to imitate Zakk.

Ozzy wrote No More Tears threw hard pain and recoverying from drugs and alcohol and did it with Zakk in a private location until they had what they need to go into the studio.

I liked Black Rain a lot. I thought it was a thousand times better than the last one. Zakk is a fantastic song writer. I won’t buy the next Ozzy cd if there’s no Zakk Wylde on it.

Don’t compare this to getting rid of Jake E. Lee. Zakke has been with Ozzy for 20 years! Ozzy owes Zakke not a damn thing. I am new to this whole posting comments thing, I hope I am doing it right. Never been a huge ozzy fan. Love love love BLS.I think if ozzy wants to try something new, he has that right, the finished product has his name on it. I hope this frees up zakk for more BLS. That band is awesome. I am not a musician, I don’t know who’s the best, I just know what I like. Zakk rocks my world. I met him also and he is a really nice guy. I hope things work out for both of them. Tank..first off..read you’re own comment..I think you got some guitarists mixed up. Two..get some spelling lessons. Three..yes there is a father-son relationship between Ozzy and Zakke and at some point in REAL life the son should always take the position of leader in the family but that is NOT how it works in a music band. Ozzy may not be able to “get it done” anymore and I think he feels his leadership fading fast and “son” Zakke is assuming control. These are my gut instincts of what is going on in part and I’m glad to see my old buzzard Ozzy having the dumplings to assert himself as leader of his band. As far as Zakke being a has-been that just my own opinion, I’m sure his own band is better than average but I haven’t heard a guitar solo that actually told a story since the song “Aimee”. I have to say back in the early days Zakke was by far the best live guitarist that Ozzy has had. He could play anybody else’s music better especially Jake’s stuff. Everybody go look up “Shot In The Dark” live at the Moscow Peace Festiful in 89′ and watch how Zakke adds that big time BOOT IN YOUR ASS to that intro. He used to have a metallic shredding sound..now it’s a fuzzy shredding sound coming out that guitar that I don’t like plus his riffs and solos to me don’t tell a story anymore. Zakke used to the man and I guess I’m more pissed at you Ozzy haters than him, I’m sure he’s never done much wrong to Ozzy, don’t change the fact that he’s got to go. Group Hug? FUCK OFF!

I think Ozzy is just uncomfortable with the fact that Zakk has gotten more and more popular while Ozzy is fading away.

I like the idea of him doing some work with different guitarists for an album. Quite honestly how many more do you want him do do with the writing from the past several? At the very least he needs to get a name and screw looking for the next big thing. He’s 60 years old, find an established guitarist that’s willing to maybe do a few last albums. I agree Tom Morello would be interesting or even Navarro.

The last thing I’d buy is a disc with a shredding guitarist and a 60 year old Ozzy trying to keep up. That’s not Ozzy and while I’m fine with change, it’s not something you do at your twilight.

Agreed that a fast guitar is not what Ozzy needs now, Sabbath is tuned down and slow enough for him but fat chance of that ever happening after their recent drama. To get back to the man of the hour..can we do something to get Zakk to shave that vulture’s nest on his face? How about mixing in some soap and a razor periodically? I keep expecting a bunch of woodland creatures to come crawling out of that thing. Possums, snakes, field mice, spiders, birds and who knows what could poke it’s head out of there. Didn’t Ozzy once set Bill Ward’s beard on fire? Time to re-live a fond old memory! I can see it now..Zakk slappin the shit out of himself trying to put out that brush fire. And afterwards standing there with a shocked and bewildered look on his face peeking through the vail of smoke rising up from the scorched remains of his fuzzy chiny-chin-chin. Bill made a joke of the incident right on the fly but with Zakk I think Ozz had better have an escape route planned. Is Zakk a Hells Angel or a Rock Star? I can’t hardly tell anymore. All jokes and criticizing aside, things have not always been smooth with Zakk and Ozz over the last 15 years but Zakk has always been there to cut an album with him (every 6 fucking years I might add).I can respect that and I thank him even If I have gotten bored of his style. I’m sure it’s gut-wrenching for Ozzy to do this and Zakk hurts too I’m sure. Oh well..now let’s see who can kick who’s ass with their next fucking album!

I can guarantee that Zakk’s (BLS) next album will be just as good as his previous albums or even better. You ask “what is Zakk anyway, a hells angel or a rockstar?” It’s not how the dude looks, it’s how the motherf**ker plays and sounds. The guy has the ability to kick ass on anything with six strings as well as the piano.

Who was the jack ass that siad “Zakk just sounds like a droptuned speedy Billy Gibons?” No doubt Billy is a kick ass string slinger, but I would put Zakk up againts Billy any day… Another guy with one hell of a beard. I don’t see anyone hating on billy’s beard.

My last point – Ozzy is a survivor, constantly wanting something different, which has worked for him in the past, but not all the time. He goes through guitar players like most of us go through underwear. Zakk has been a pretty straight forward musician. Instead of rushing to change something to sell more records he just writes something slightly different and still remains who he is. And who gives a shit if Zakk indulges in a few beers now and then. Rumor has it that he has been to rehab, a place that Ozzy is no stranger to.

The truth is I like them both, but zakk has many more tricks up his sleave. Ozzy just looks for other guitar players to provide him with new tricks. Another thing to think about…..Ozzy has booted Zakk from the band before and asked him to come back. Don’t be surprised if it happens again.
