Corgan Explains Why He’s Keeping Smashing Pumpkins Name

Billy Corgan defended his decision to keep performing under the name the Smashing Pumpkins in a long, rambling blog post last week on the band’s official Website, telling fans that even though drummer Jimmy Chamberlin — the Pumpkins’ last original member not named Corgan — left the group, the band will still make music fans will hopefully deem worthy of the Smashing Pumpkins moniker.

“What the future holds is unknown to me. I am 100pct committed to the future of SP. I can tell you that. 100pct!! I’ve never been happier about being in SP, or a part of SP, than I am now,” Corgan wrote. “The music I am making sounds like The Smashing Pumpkins. It doesn’t sound like solo work, I can assure you of that.” Corgan adds that he’s wrestled with what to do with the Pumpkins name since Chamberlin was first fired from the group in 1996 and then when original members James Iha and D’Arcy left in 2000. (Chamberlin rejoined the Pumpkins in 1998, but left earlier this year after deciding he could no longer just “cash the check”).

“The idea of identity is a strange one to tackle. For many years, I treated the idea of the band named The Smashing Pumpkins as an existential concept that existed away from my being and body…,” Corgan wrote, hinting at his one-off supergroup Zwan. “The music that came out of this being and body. I’ve called the umbrella the songs came out under different names but to me I guess there really wasn’t a whole lot of difference. As they say, a song is a song.”

“I will never say to you what people say to me all the time, which is that ‘I am the band’. I am not ‘the band’, I am just the leader of the band,” Corgan adds before finishing off his long post with references to holistic living and wrestling catchphrases. As Rock Daily previously reported, one of those band members that Corgan is “just the leader of” may be Chamberlin’s 19-year-old replacement, Mike Byrne.

I uaed to be a big Smashing Pumpkins/Billy Corgan.

I used to also pick my nose and eat the boogers.

We all make dumb errors, and grow up.

Anonymous | 7/13/2009, 6:58 pm EST

i left out the word ‘fan’.

uaed = used

Thomas | 7/13/2009, 7:38 pm EST

And why shouldn’t he keep the name..he IS the song writer.
Do people argue that Trent Reznor should drop the NIN name because he has different musicians play on albums?!?

Ray | 7/13/2009, 11:25 pm EST

He’s keeping the name because nobody else wants it. Just another pretentious bore.

Echo | 7/14/2009, 12:58 am EST

And who are the people making comments under “Trent is wrong” and “Reuben”? How come I am able to see them in the box where I’m supposed to enter my name?

Hikonejo | 7/14/2009, 1:10 am EST

At least Iha and D’Arcy should come back to the Band.

I don’t understand why band members take a Legacy like “The Smashing Pumpkins” and just sit back on the sofa at home and think, “Oh, I can do it! Can I do it?”

Sack Up! Get your Asses back to the Band. Get back in the Studio. Get back on Tour, and give your long loyal fans what they deserve – “The Smashing Pumpkins.”

Make Good Already, stop talking and give up the meat.

Corgan the Melon Head | 7/14/2009, 8:56 am EST

Of course Corgan wants to keep the name Smashing Pumpkins. It’s because that head of his resembles a pumpkin which we would all like to smash. A band by any other name would not sell as many records as the SP name and he knows that.

Black Frank | 7/14/2009, 9:19 am EST

Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band of the 90’s. Something about their music just spoke to me at the time. I still listen to their stuff today in my mid-30’s. But Billy has just really gone off his rocker the last few years. It just seems like he doesn’t know what he wants out of his music or really life itself. I think he needs to put SP to bed because it is not the same as it used to be. I saw them in their heyday in the 90’s and I saw them on tour in 07 and they were not the same band. I don’t mean the personnel, but the music itself. Billy has turned his band into a sluggish, pseudo heavy-metal meandering mess. I would rather see them just stop than continue on the current direction.

Jeff | 7/14/2009, 2:12 pm EST

Billy Corgan, you are the bigest douche in the universe.

Echo | 7/14/2009, 3:28 pm EST

“I am not ‘the band’, I am just the leader of the band,”

Correction, you’re the lead SINGER of the band. Being the lead singer does not necessarily make you the leader of the band. A real band makes decisions TOGETHER. That’s the whole point of being in a band. And that’s why everyone left your sorry ass, cause you morphed into
Axl Rose. Seriously, I wish I could email Billy so I could provide him a link to a Freddie Mercury interview on Youtube where he says exactly just that, he doesn’t consider himself the “leader” of the band, he’s just the lead singer, because band members are supposed to be equals. That’s how it SHOULD be.

Jeff | 7/14/2009, 6:09 pm EST

He is the songwriter. He played everything except drums on the records. It is his and Jimmy’s band. If Jimmy opts out, it’s Billy’s band.

He is still the biggest douche in the universe.

flank | 7/15/2009, 8:43 pm EST

How is Eddie Vedder able to keep his band together while Corgan cannot?
My guess is Vedder is not threatened by divergent viewpoints and values the input of other people.

EBH | 7/15/2009, 10:24 pm EST

Ohh stupid people, Respect. 150 greatest hits or so isnt enough? Most bands have 5 or 6 goodies and the rest are fillers…Does someone always have to die before you praise all the awesome shite they did. Everything now is just a bonus, and thats good enough for me. For gods sake the F n jonus brothers are on the cover of RS. Enjoy! And remember the days when we had good music!

PinchHarmonic Overload | 7/16/2009, 5:09 am EST

Its because he is the Smashing Pumpkins. Iha and D’arcy didn’t contribute much except cashing those paychecks. Watching them perform, you could almost see James and D’arcy checking their watches and wondering how much longer they would have to play.
Good riddance. Now Billy can bring in more enthusiastic players.
Keep rolling Billy and let the bitter folks slip away and find something else to bitch about.

Glenn | 7/16/2009, 9:43 am EST

I really must say, I think the SP is dead. I read a comment earlier saying Billy had become Axl Rose and that is 100% Correct. He’s a buffoon who drove out the energy and foundation of his band because he Must control everything. BTW Iha Co-Wrote a lot of the best stuff they did. Look at the liner notes. Corgan is just delusional if he things his version of the “SP” will go anywhere. And delusional if he thinks the crap he’s making now is “SP music”.

blahblahblah | 7/16/2009, 12:55 pm EST

It’s you people with your panties in a wad, who don’t allow for artistic freedom, that have killed the music industry. None of you have any credibility with me, judging Billy Corgan’s music until you look a bit deeper maybe listen to something like the Machina Acoustic Demos (which are free online, if you look for them) and THEN create something equal to or better, THEN come back here and bitch about Billy or the pumpkins or anything musical. Enjoy your Jonas Brothers. Peace. :)

Pslightly Psycho | 7/16/2009, 2:36 pm EST

Time to hang it up there Billy. NO ONE cares anymore.

Jimmy the Frog | 7/16/2009, 5:15 pm EST

Right, Queen had soooooo much success after Freddie Mercury. Billy is the Pumkins – get over it. He may be guano crazy, but do you think he is the artist that he is because he thinks and acts like us? What artist worth a darn is a normal guy that you can go have a beer with and have a nice conversation? In the 90s he was angry, confused, hurt, loved, abandoned, and everyting else in the book. Now, he feels differently, and it is reflected in the music. Do yourself a favor, put down the latest Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Green Day discs (different verse, same as the first), go on itunes and download Set the Ray to Jerry, Starla, Whir, Pennies, Mouths of Babes, and Marquis in Spades. These are the ones that didn’t make the cut, folks. Pure genius.

Echo | 7/16/2009, 7:57 pm EST

I’m not saying Queen is Queen without Freddie, but at the same time, if it were Brian May or John Deacon or Roger Taylor that died instead of Freddie, and the band still went on without them, would it still be Queen? No, because they were all major contributors to the band’s success. Same with Led Zeppelin, when John Bonham died, the other members knew that what he brought to the band could not be replaced, so they did the proper thing and formally disbanded and went on with their musical careers, but NOT as Led Zeppelin. And then you have Guns N Roses. Is Axl Rose a crucial, non-replaceable component of the band? Yes. So were the other members from the Appetite for Destruction era. You see how lame and pathetic GNR is without Slash, Izzy and Duff. It’s the same thing with the Smashing Pumpkins. If Billy wants to continue fronting a band without James, D’Arcy and Jimmy, that’s fine, but he shouldn’t do it under the SP name. Because the Smashing Pumpkins aren’t the Smashing Pumpkins without them.

Glenn | 7/16/2009, 8:32 pm EST

Amen Brother. I hate idol worship. People all..”Billy is the pumpkins!”
if that were true he would’ve came out as The Billy Corgan Trio and not the SP. Now Trent Reznor IS NIN because he is solely resposible for the music by himself. Corgan had James Iha co writing along with Butch Vig. Butch Vig the man responsible for Nirvana Nevermind… So don’t tell me Billy Corgan is solely responsible for SP. And Speaking of NIN…After Butch Vig decided he wanted to persue Garbage.. Corgan went and chased down Alan Moulder and Flood to produce Mellon Collie etc.. Cause he heard what they had collaborated with TR with and wanted to steal some production ideas.

Billy besides being way overrated and not as important as he thinks he is has really destroyed the name Smashing Pumpkins. The name has no more meaning or worth.

Hey what up Jeff and darcy, I wonder how rose is doing. Good I hope. Tell Tonya I say what up

This is one of the most uneducated things I’ve read.
And if you ask Butch Vigg who you seem to think for some reason helped create a band that existed 5 years before he even met them and decided to produce an album- even he will tell you that James and D’Arcy contributed shit to the band as well as anyone else close to the band.

joe | 7/18/2009, 1:38 am EST

billy, retire please. Thanks.

Frankly | 7/19/2009, 9:54 am EST

I just hope all these people sooo hung up on a name will NOT be showing up to any future SP shows.
And about James being such a major contributer…thats why he’s making such great music now..pfffft.
Listen to that ridiculously bad band he’s in now.
I just see this a great way to weed out the morons from the fan base.
Rock on Billy!

Bob | 7/19/2009, 3:29 pm EST

I think that Billy is brilliant, flawed and completely human, but is utterly blind to his own increasing irrelevance – an irrelevance that he both fails to mask with the pretences of old, or the music of late. I love many of the Pumpkins’ old albums, but his recent collection of failures are a clear indicator of what needs to happen.

Billy, you peaked a long time ago; step aside, or become a producer. There’s nothing more you can offer.

madrIgaL | 7/20/2009, 12:21 am EST

Doesn’t billy look like the male version of kristen durnst from spider man?

Pete | 8/11/2009, 1:51 pm EST

Wow..so much hate. Some people act like because they gave up on the pumpkins that everyone else feels the same way. There is so much ignorance in these posts because I haven’t heard one legitimate criticism of why Billy shouldn’t keep the name. The Smashing Pumpkins is a concept that plunges far deeper than what some of you idiots can realize. He is brilliant when it comes to songwriting and devotes more time to his fans and the band than any artist around and for that I’ll have faith in wherever he decides to go with the band. Rock on Billy!

LoopGuru | 9/20/2009, 2:06 am EST

I assumed he was using the name “Smashing Pumpkins” because when he uses the name “Billy Corgan” it sells about 3 copies (2 of which are to himself). Doesn’t matter…this boy-who-whined-wolf has been off my radar since I realized that Mellon Collie was an amazing album if I cut half of it out.
