Michael Jackson Remembered: Inside Rolling Stone’s Special Issue

7/10/09, 2:06 pm EST

When Michael Jackson suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and died on June 25th, the stunned and saddened Rolling Stone team sprang into action, assembling a special commemorative issue dedicated to the King of Pop that is on newsstands now (click here to order it). The issue includes a look back at Jackson’s life and music album by album, our 1971 and 1983 cover stories, an essay by Touré about Jackson’s complicated relationship to his race, an exploration of his downward spiral, dozens of iconic photos and tributes from Quincy Jones, Slash, Brooke Shields and more.

There are a few Jackson features you can dive into right now, starting with Rob Sheffield’s breakdown of the 25 essential song, videos and performances that defined Jackson’s career. Watch the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” plus “Billie Jean,” Jackson’s Motown 25 performance, his 1988 Grammy performance and and more with Sheffield’s commentary: Michael Jackson — The Essential Moments.

Plus, a dozen stars including Adam Lambert, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Stevie Nicks, Chris Cornell and the famous directors of Jackson’s “Scream” and “Remember the Time” videos share their personal memories of the fallen pop icon: Michael Jackson Remembered.

Rolling Stone also takes a look at Jackson’s enduring musical legacy — his unmistakable imprint on pop stars from Justin Timberlake to Chris Brown and beyond, as well as his unlikely influence on a generation of rockers who were inspired by his studio perfectionism and genre blending:
Michael Jackson’s Indelible Pop Legacy and Michael Jackson: The Unlikely King of Rock.

And click above to go behind the issue as RS editors discuss what made Jackson such a pop icon. “He had this old-time Hollywood sense of razzle-dazzle showbiz, but also this proto-hip-hop street dancing thing, but Michael Jackson did it in a way that both Fred Astaire and a hip-hopper could get into,” Rob Sheffield says. “He came out at a time when ‘disco sucks’ was a popular sentiment, there was a lot of controversy over dancing, music that you danced to was for girls, not for boys, and at the time of Off the Wall, he was an artist who made music for boys and girls.”

“He was above genre — he was all music,” says Andy Greene. “I think ‘I Want You Back’ is my favorite pop song of all time,” notes Christian Hoard, while Alan Light calls “Billie Jean” “a flawless record,” and recalls how large it loomed in his life. “Off the Wall is a phenomenal sounding album,” says Brian Hiatt, “almost a perfect album.”

Even if M.J. was a great entertainer why would u trust a 50 year old man that wears one glove and sings “Beat It?”

I loved “The Gloved One”. But I loved Janet Jackson more! Everytime I see her in that Superbowl show when her nipple falls out. I always run out a buy some chocolate milk!

Saint Michael Jackson

My experience of Michael Jackson’s death is one that surprises me. I knew very little about Michael, primarily introduced to him through his Thriller album that came out when I was a pre-teen, but I didn’t keep up with him as a person or an artist. So it has been a great surprise to me that since Michael Jackson’s passing I cannot help but feel that a saintly spirit has passed.

Somehow, since his death I have felt Michael Jackson’s godliness, with his delicate Krishna-like features, his Christ-like love of children, his giving nature, his quest to become truthfulness, integrity and love.

In my heart, and for reasons and logic unknown to me at present, in my heart I hereby canonize Michael Jackson, despite it all. May his gentle, godly spirit continue in its quest for love and truth.

Oh..So now Rolling Stone writes a positive article about Michael..this from a magazine that continually slammed him for years. To little to late. Michael deserved to be treated right when he was alive.

nikki | 7/10/2009, 6:42 pm EST

I still remember the article that RS wrote calling Justin timberlake the new King of Pop.Justin is a wannabe copycat and RS in that article tried to wipe Michael away everything MJ created and hand it over to Justin like he created it. So sad …..

People often say good things never last. This is true of Micheal Jackson who was loved by every soul, race and people of all calibre and all generation. His untimely death shocked the wold. But a lot of people contributed to his death, including all his doctors and lawyer, judges and barristers and even his personal friends. God will judge and deal with all of them especially those who made faulse allegations against him in order to reap what they did not cultivate. They will never enjoy that money while he is in the grave, sufferred and died for injustics.

MJ was the greatest and we need to shine a light on his career, even as a person. he was one of the most giving individuals. I found a great site that has a piece about this, go to ebmpublishing.com

He was innocent like an angel. I always admired him for his kindness, charm, personality. My heart breaks when I think about all that he went through.
I love you Michael ♥

hey, when’s this issue being released?

and btw, i’m a big fan of mj, but being a loyal beatles fan it gets gets under my skin a little when they say mj’s the best ever… we don’t know that yet. only time will tell

Sandie | 7/10/2009, 11:42 pm EST

You cannot compare M.J. with the Beatles both were great but in different ways.
I rather surprised myself at the loss I felt when I heard MJ had died I truly felt genuine sadness.Like I did when I heard John Lennon was dead.
They both made great music and for that I am grateful.

Slovenia | 7/11/2009, 6:38 am EST

Only a very few people in this world realy comprehended the whole
godliness of great Michael; I also relised that greatness
after he left us. Is is totaly uncomprehendable what a terrible unusual sadness I felt after his leaving our world. And I wasn’t even his fan, especially becouse mine only idle is Christ, bur somehow I can’t understand why I see in all fife of Michael the work of God which will be fully comprehend only far in the future, when we will all be gone, now i beleive is not the time, we can completely understan such a great Spirit and anima- God is with you Michael, hope to se you again somewhere , some other time , that is if I’all arrive after mine departure from this world to such a hights as where God is at home.

Haha | 7/11/2009, 10:53 am EST

I love it when people tell other people to shut up on this board. Look how Nicole Ritchie turned out.

It is not a matter whatever one is Saint or not, becouse deep down in our hearts we all are, we all are- besides body and Soul also the children of God, the Spirit.
It is a matter of Michael being a Being with incredible potentials and Godliness creativity and as he told us, the God is in our world also working through art and Michael was and is in his field one of the greatest artist of our time.
Would he not fell in the hands of Dark side of the Light, he would achive something the world cannot even image, but this didn’t happened due to some other dark forces around him, but regardless
HE is and He WILL remain the great artist who, although had had to go through terrible ordeal and Soul
torture ( as a child and as a grown person – when unjustable accused becouse dark forces wanted to destroy him for many reasons, one of them becouse they were especially afraid of him, becouse he had the incredible potential to transform the world to a much better world.
This is how will the future generation look at him becouse Michael was much, much more than just an worldy known entertainer, much more.

Slovenia | 7/11/2009, 3:33 pm EST

Anyway we all know that this era is the era of the Archangel Michael, who on the etherical level helps the humanity to go through their dark side of Soul, to reach the home, the Light, the God, to come home.

And although the Michael is not the Archangel Michael, he definitely is his friend.

Hall | 7/11/2009, 4:01 pm EST

Are you people stark raving nuts?

All the available evidence confirms Jackson was the equivalent of a heroin addict (morphine) and a lifelong pedophile. Regardless of what Bro. Sharpton pandered to the crowd with, I’ll quote Arsenio Hall, from his ancient tv show “… the brother is WEIRD!” The theory “he was the best daddy” is lessened by the fact the child (not Michael’s) knows no other male in that role. As zonked as Jackson stayed, when he could get the dope, I seriously doubt he’d win Father of Any Year. (Hey, Blanket, come see Papa nod off …)

Quincy Jones created some good records for him a quarter-century ago. How many mega-sellers has Jackson created by himself in the past decade?

Get a grip. If you want to make an African American into a hero, do it for Quincy. He’s the man who MADE the music.

one post at 9:33 this morning.

Suddenly, posts at 1:21, 1:34, 1:37, 1:42, 1:48, 1:56.

“This is true of Micheal Jackson who was loved by every soul, race and people of all calibre and all generation.”

All suggesting some version of this foolishness.

A person who is cynical might believe that six successive posts urging that Michael Jackson is the greatest thing since Diet Dr. Pepper, in less than 40 minutes, are from the same poster.

Michael Jackson is the greasted African American Artist ever. He had moves that no one could ever duplicate. His songs are amazing. He had amazing talent. I wish I had the chance to meet him. Maybe in my next life. I belive that he had a nice heart.( based on from what I seen) I don’t think he ever hurted anyone. He never had a childhood. He was trying to fullfill what he never had as a kid. Now he can rest in peace. With out all the B.S. He can live how he was supposed to live. I belive waht Al Sharption said.” There was Nothing strange about your daddy. What was strange was how people treated him.”( Very True Statement) Michael Jackson I love you. and you will be missed tremendously. See you soon. My love goes out to the Jackson Family.

Justin Timberlake the new King off pop please. Never..

K.N.L. | 7/13/2009, 6:17 pm EST

Let me begin by telling you that I read my first issue of RS only 3 days ago.

I always knew RS to be a respected magazine for all things entertainment, but I don’t usually buy magazines unless they are commemorative issues on historic people and events. Like a lot of people, I often find it hard to wade through all the information out there to find the truth on celebrities and their lives. Since Michael Jackson’s death, I have scoured the internet and leafed through other magazine titles, searching for reporting that had the ring of truth on such an enigmatic and complicated public figure. I don’t need to tell you that there is a lot of crap out there and very little of substance available so the reader might come to their own conclusion on matters. About a week after MJ’s death, I decided to browse all possible commemorative issues (People, Macleans, etc.) and make a decision on the one issue I would let myself buy and keep as a souvenir. I saw on your site that you were issuing a commemorative issue and that it was available for pre-order through Barnes & Noble. I figured, since MJ was famous for his music and RS was famous for its role in the music world, that I would take a chance (not having seen the actual issue or ever having read your magazine) and choose RS over all the other available choices.

Thank you for not disappointing me.

I really appreciated the in-depth interviews with a younger MJ, direct quotes from Tarraborelli, Jones, Gordy and others close to MJ and the minimum of personal spin on the King of Pop’s unusual lifestyle. Your issue offered me the content (more text than in any other magazine I leafed through) and unique insights from people in Michael’s own industry that no other magazine explored; I thoroughly enjoyed reading your work. Thanks for an entertaining, personal, and balanced look at MJ’s life and for focusing on the music more than anything.

Jonah Baker | 7/13/2009, 7:20 pm EST

I love Michael’s albums, and videos, and concerts. And even his book:
Have you heard about Michael Jackson’s New Book?
A: It’s called “The In’s and Out’s of Child Rearing”.

tc | 7/13/2009, 10:29 pm EST

i am glad to have lived in a time where the greatest entertainer was alive. I will miss him terribly. I will miss his songs and especially his dancing. I LOVED TO WATCH him dance. no matter what anyone says, you have to agree the man could dance. The world has lost talent. pure and simple, we have lost. rip

mimi | 7/14/2009, 10:23 am EST

I wish him peace and acceptance…

MG | 7/14/2009, 8:56 pm EST

About damn time he has gotten something positive from people he has entertained for his entire life. The media is the problem in situations like this. His legacy and contributions is what should have been on public display. NOT HIS PERSONAL LIFE! Read the storied people! Watch the interviews! He did not moleste anyone! The damn kids mother was a fraud and had been accused of frauding the government. So what makes it not possible for her to try to get money by falsely accusing an innocent man. A man that opened his home and his wallet to helping her lazy ass take care of her sick child. Give me a damn break people! Michael Jackson desrves this honor from every magazine written and much much more! Its been 10 years in the making that they finally published the man that made history in so many ways… His music bring to our ears his dancing to fulfill our sight and his lyrics to touch our hearts forever! RIP Micheal you are an icon and your legacy will live forever.

MG | 7/14/2009, 9:06 pm EST

DJ BRYAN FLASH, obviously you need to listen to the song stupid ass. I guess you being a genius and all with your thought level you have to wear a glove and beat it on your own so of course you wouldn’t catch that His song was about gang fighting mr clever one!

Lisa P | 7/15/2009, 2:03 pm EST

This was worth the $10. It focuses, rightly so, on the music more than anything. I am close to Michael’s age and watched as he lived 10,000 lifetimes to my one. I fell in love with him way back when I was a little girl in NYC. Over the years…the dance tunes, the ballads, the amazing and precise dancing, all told -and continue to tell- the tale of a master artist. This issue is helping me revisit the music I loved, and find new songs to love into the future. Thanks.

MJ's fan for life and after. | 7/18/2009, 10:53 pm EST

Thank you RS for the kind words about our king of pop. I am actually more saddened about the loss of Michael than my own family members. He was special, as great and popular as he became, he remained humble and unpretentious. He had the power that comes with fortune and he tried to help others as best he could. Like all of us, if he had known better, he would have done better, (so others couldnt take advantage of him). What he gave us from his art goes beyond just entertainment. I am a 58 year old white woman and I cant talk about Michael Jackson without feeling an ache in my heart for how he was misunderstood by haters. I miss him so. xox

SoCalGal | 7/21/2009, 1:38 pm EST

I knew Rolling Stone to be a consistent and persistent detractor of Michael Jackson, so I never bought the magazine. The commemorative issue, however, was Rolling Stone’s redemption, so I congratulate you on a beautiful compilation of his stunning life.

To Michael | 7/12/2009, 1:48 pm EST, thank you for speaking the truth so eloquently.

Taking Care | 7/21/2009, 8:14 pm EST

It hurst a little that it takes Michael’s passing for people to speak kindly of him again. I respect Hall’s take on all this because he/she beliefs the worst of Michael because that is mostly what was printed when he was alive. I also respect, even more so, the comment of Michael deserving kind words when he was alive, because he did.
All In All I Am Glad To See The Positive Come Out Of People Rather Than More Negativity. I Don’t Think I Nor The Dedicated Fans Could Take It. Plus I Think The Kind Words Has Made It Easier For Those Who Never Stopped Loving Michael’s Work To Say It Out Loud.

do you all think that he was the best and I will agree he was
I did cry alot when he passed away one of my worse day I ever had
and his song Thriller o my god w you can’t help but to dance to his music all of them don’t you agree ???

Pritylegz | 7/29/2009, 6:20 am EST

I can imagine Michael was probably sad on some level on a daily basis for many years.Seems everyone including family, wanted a piece of him. Some of what was said and written about Michael while he was alive made me want to cry for him. When you look at photos of him,and when you hear him speak and even in his songs it seemed he very much needed and wanted to cry on anyones shoulder for days on end.Michael was experiencing the ultimate misery.Just think for a moment,to be wealthy, famous, loved by millions around the globe and all the man valued more than anything was sleep.I was sad momentarily upon hearing of his death, but later I ‘THANKED GOD’for taking Michael away from amongst us,we were to cruel.’HE’ knew Michael could’nt take any more.If resusitation efforts had been successful,I believe Michael would have immediately cried uncontrolable tears of ‘why did you bring me back?
