Flashback: The End of NIN Opens Door To Exotic Birds Reunion

7/10/09, 3:06 pm EST

Trent Reznor announced Nine Inch Nails‘ final U.S. tour dates via Twitter today, making the prospect of a world without NIN a stark and impending reality. As we get nostalgic about the past 20 years of Nine Inch Nails, Rock Daily was going to embed a video of Nine Inch Nails performing Soft Cell’s “Sex Dwarf” from 1989 in this week’s Flashback, but instead we present this video of Reznor performing with Soft Cell-style hair as a member of the Exotic Birds in 1985.

The clip, which someone miraculously taped from a 1985 Cleveland news program, debates whether or not electronic music had a future in the rock world. Given Reznor’s body of work, his loyal fans and his ability to find success after breaking away from the record industry, it’s safe to say that the keyboards and machines won out/ (For more vintage Rez, check out this YouTube video of Trent playing keyboards for Slam Bamboo at the 0:57 mark.) For the final NIN tour dates, check after the jump.

Come on, Rolling Stone. You should have posted the videos of Trent performing with Option 30 in 1983! Those are priceless.

I always knew he was a fake douchbag and now RS proves it to me. Good work boys.

Fans have been BAMBOOZLED and Hoodwinked by this man for years. Now, it’s all coming out in the light for everyone to see. Reznor would do anything for a little publicity including the mud at ‘Lola, the Tate House, the semi-snuff film Closure, the made up depression/angst, and now he’s a internet “genius” when gives away free music. What a joke, other bands were trying innovative things online before Reznor had a website. Reznor is a putz and hasn’t put out a good cd in over 10 years.

Mark Watts | 7/12/2009, 7:47 pm EST

Why do people think this man is smart? Reznor is an opportunist and attention seeking ho. This video shows he did a 180 turn from Exotic Birds to NIN and now he is “attempting” another 180 turnaround. Reznor’s a joke.

ex ninner | 7/12/2009, 9:43 pm EST

Trent is out dated and old news. He needs to go out all sad and wonky like this. He is an opportunist and shits on all his musicians. Just ask Jeordie or Aaron.

Michael B. | 7/13/2009, 5:46 am EST

Well I see Reznor’s at it again..whining like he claims his fans do. For someone who keeps threatening to retire, he sure does do a good job of add more and more dates to this boring tour. Irony at it’s finest.

Rusty Nails | 7/13/2009, 10:55 am EST

Wow that’s a side of him I never seen of him. I don’t know why so many haters on this site. So what the guy likes more then 1 style of music. Its not hard to listen to his catalog of music and notice that he probably has more interest then just one area. Yes this might not look flattering, but I still enjoy what he has done with NIN and we’ll still if he really does decide to hang it up.

Sharp Nails | 7/13/2009, 2:23 pm EST

Please stop with bringing up Trent Reznor RS. That guy has been creating the same kind of boring, self-obsessed fake-rock since the mid-nineties.

NIN RULES B*TCHES!!! :P | 7/15/2009, 3:27 am EST

The irony of RS readers saying that NIN sucks is priceless… Thanks God we have really cool bands like The Jonas Brothers.

Bele Rosa | 7/15/2009, 8:48 am EST

That Seagulls hairdo was PATHETIC. The more we learn about Reznor, the creepier he gets. He picks up those underage women on the internet, and leads them on. Stranegly enough, they were mostly plump and unattactive. He must enjoy playing games with people’s minds.

Twitter fail/janes addiction/ wave goodbye FAIL. whine, whine

No offense, the money and sales speak for itself. It’s not like NIN is selling tickets on a massive scale like say — U2, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews Band, or dare I mention, Jimmy Buffet. NIN aren’t filling stadiums or arenas (Did NIN ever?) It’s more of an amphitheater vibe these days. As for NIN being a “champion” of bands, well, that depends on how you really look at it. Let’s say three decades from now you want to look back on the most amazing live bands ever. Would NIN be ranked based on such a legendary status or infamy? Again, sort of doubtful. Ego versus quality. Legendary rock stars know how to retire in style and keep their mouths shut about the quality of other artists. They don’t slam people; they embrace the medium. It would be different if he said he were going on HIATUS. But he seems to have this idiocy that everything is so final that he expects people to hang on his every word. Well, with that said, tomorrow, I’m off to Goodwill to donate my NIN CDs. Laterz!

zigwag | 7/15/2009, 10:38 am EST

As usual the haters seemingly flood any post about any given band at RS.com. Everyone seems to envision themselves with authoritative opinions on bands they’ve always hated anyway. Why don’t you all go back to listening to your other hype monsters since Radiohead, Opeth or the Mars Volta obviously are more authentic or inventive than Trent, who just likes to reinvent himself too goddam much, huh.

cpaxlvacy | 7/15/2009, 12:41 pm EST

Trent Reznor is a fucking genious, the haters can suck my dick…

Brett Holmes | 7/16/2009, 3:03 am EST

Has Trent Reznor noticed that more than one music journalist/blogger/whatnot has noticed that he seems to be doing an awful lot of trash-talking lately between mediocre shows?

And very little about how people-other-than-him find new music, based on his advice about online self-promotion to unknown bands. Thanks to TR for telling every wannabe rockstar with a pre-installed copy of Garageband how to make the internet even MORE of a trash-infested cesspool than it already is. After all, don’t you know, letting a record company do all the hard work for you for 18 years (most of which you spent drunk & drugged out) means you will end up an expert on artist development and promotion! Who needs a “mafia” to separate the good stuff from the crap? That’s my assistants’ job! Yay internetz!

I can’t wait for him to share his “expertise” on television production. After all, he’s been watching TV for 44 years! He KNOWS the industry! Move over Norman Lear, Trent Reznor is here!

cHRIS | 7/17/2009, 11:16 am EST

What is with all the haters? You guys really havnt got a clue, to the person who said he shits on musicians like jeordie and arron, ha, you picked the two biggest pricks there are both self obsessed and wanting all the attention. Reznor has given away his last album which was awsome and is 100% right about the record labels….you all deserve a slap

ME | 7/22/2009, 7:31 pm EST

well, those who thinks reznor is an opportunist could let the time pass…

these are just “LOSER USERS”.

its not easy for stupid people to syncing with New ERA of industrial music circulating in action…

Go Listen to your LoveGun Losers…

Mr. Bobby | 8/8/2009, 4:28 am EST

What’s with the haters? It’s the definition of troll.
