Michael Jackson Memorial Draws Big Audience, Huge Price Tag

Michael Jackson’s all-star memorial service cost Los Angeles significantly less than first estimated, running up a tab of $1.4 million for the deployment of extra police officers, sanitation workers and traffic controllers, CNN reports. The Los Angeles Mayor’s Office at first predicted the event would cost the cash-strapped city $3.8 million, leading mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to set up a Website to collect tax-deductible donations. Heavy Internet traffic on the day of the memorial caused the site to crash frequently, and the page only managed to raise approximately $17,000. At press time, it was unclear if AEG Live, the concert promotion company that helped stage the event, contributed any cash.

(Check out photos from the Jackson memorial.)

An estimated 31.1 million people in the U.S. watched the Jackson memorial on television, the AP reports, placing the broadcast behind the funerals of Princess Diana (33.2 million in 1997) and Ronald Reagan (35.1 million in 2004). However, because the memorial took place during the afternoon of a workweek, a massive audience saw the service via Webcast. The number of online viewers doubles the estimated audience, as MSNBC reported 19 million streams on June 7th, CNN had 10.5 million and ABC News had 6 million streams; the tribute was also streamed on TMZ, Hulu, MySpace and CBS.

(Go inside the memorial in our report from the scene.)

AEG Live launched their official online Michael Jackson: This Is It! Merchandise store yesterday, featuring many of the items fans could have expected to see on sale at London’s O2 Arena during Jackson’s run of 50 concerts. According to an e-mail to those who registered to purchase tickets to the shows, Jackson himself approved all of the items — which range from clothing to belt buckles to collective plates — in early June. “As we mourn the loss of one of the greatest talents the world has ever seen, we are only beginning to feel the impact that Michael left upon us all,” AEG Live’s e-mail announcing the site reads. “A variety of official merchandise commemorates this incredible talent and preserves the legacy that is Michael Jackson.”

Finally, TMZ reports that Jackson will be wearing one white leather glove covered in Swarovski crystals when he is finally buried. La Toya Jackson reportedly wanted Michael to be wearing his trademark one glove — an iconic fashion statement echoed by his brothers at the memorial — inside the casket, and glove maker Dorothy Gaspar says Jackson’s stylist told her La Toya selected a white leather glove Gaspar made over a decade ago.

Wah Wah WAh. The City of Los Angeles would have a lot more money right now if they hadn’t wasted millions of dollars trying to persecute Michael Jackson in the first place.

And what about the tax revenue they made from all the visiters coming to town for the funeral?

Lorites Acunin | 7/9/2009, 9:57 am EST

Michael’s millions of fans reach far and wide around the globe and all of us, including us here in the Philippines, are hungry for information about him. In life and in death, we adore him. For us, he’s the greatest, most brilliant, most compassionate, gentlest artist who ever lived. As for those scums who continue to weave lies and persecute him, while alive and even after his death, it is undeniable THAT THEY CAN NOT HELP BUT THINK OF MICHAEL JACKSON, and even in death, their favorite subject is still the great MICHAEL JACKSON. Admit it, but even the journalists who bombard Michael with their accusations and lies GET PAID for doing so, ergo, Michael Jackson is a source of their LIVELIHOOD. They should at least be thankful to Michael for that.

kelly | 7/9/2009, 9:58 am EST

Oh my goodness I am so glad that the King is finally getting the love he deserved. I wish he did not have to leave us though.

RIP sweet King.

I knew the LA official were being ridiculous with those numbers. What they did not believe that MJ fans work and have families of course we would watch on the tv and internets. Those number are humongous.

Angie | 7/9/2009, 10:17 am EST

I so agree with Marshalddog. The city wouldn’t be broke if they had decided against trying to make an example out of a celebrity. Then again, it’s LA….

Brian | 7/9/2009, 10:22 am EST

I think it is a shame the city has to foot the bill for this crap. The family should have to pay for this.

Personally – Im glad its over. Its been nothing but a bunch of unneeded drama.

Anonymous | 7/9/2009, 10:31 am EST

If the Jacksons or AEG had any CLASS they would have picked up the bill for the “King” in the first place! It would have never been a issue. $1.00 is to many to spend on a service that the family could have done in private. The city was backed in to a corner & forcerd to beg the “WORLD” for money to help with the over the top event. The Jacksons & AEG are disgusting trash. Michael would have sure loved to know his memorial was in part being paid for by a struggling City’s emergency money and begger money from fans. I’m sure he is also happy it didn’t cost as much as thought-less money the city has to kick in to honor a fallen star. More for merchandise! BARFFF!!!

Jacko | 7/9/2009, 10:32 am EST

Jacko is really my last name. I took a day off work just to make sure I was home to watch the memorial. I couldn’t hold back the tears as the numerous artist sang MJ’s songs. They all just took me back to my childhood. He will be greatly missed. In my opinion he achieved the impossible, immortality. He will never die because his music lives for ever and ever. I pray for his family and especially for his children. No child should go through what they are about to in the near future.
As for the huge price tag, He was well worth more than the 1.3 million they spent. He deserved everything that was put together and more… Besides they made there money back anyway with all the tourist that came to town for the memorial…
WE LOVE YOU MJ!!! Please let him RIP…

I agree with Marshalddog also…it’s interesting that revenue earned by the city, as a result of this event, was not a part of the discussion…but then that would put a more positive spin on the memorial and detract from the burdensome image the media seems to want to project about it now.

From the Right | 7/9/2009, 10:40 am EST

La Toya just answered a big question. Michael hasn’t been buried nor has he been creamated.

ndirai | 7/9/2009, 10:50 am EST

Michael you are a hero of heroes. your music was nothing but an inspiration. no amount of money can cover for the memories that people will have of your music

HMac | 7/9/2009, 11:02 am EST

Hmmm…let’s see how much the celebrities, Sharpton (puke), Jesse Jackson, his family, and Sheila Jackson Lee (puke) donate! 21 servicemen and women died that day serving our country, where was that news.

kbaby30 | 7/9/2009, 11:04 am EST

The man is dead leave him alone let him rest in peace

AnnL | 7/9/2009, 11:05 am EST

The City of Los Angeles should be thanking the Jackson Family for not taking the memorial to Gary,
Indianna. That city was begging to have the services and burial held there. We all know that the revenue made over the past couple of weeks and for years to come will more than cover their pathetic 1.4 mil. The city officials should be ashamed of themselves for even discussing it.
I have never heard a complaint from any municipality for a memorial of a major celebrity. RIP Michael

We adored and loved Michael Jackson very much here in Zimbabwe.I remember back around 1992 when it was either’Heal The World’ or ‘Hold Me’ everywhere here in Zim.I was 10 then but hey we cld sing and dance like him.RIP king of pop.Zorora murugare

Albert Bamm | 7/9/2009, 11:07 am EST

man it was somthing watchin MJs memorial service, i am really moved by the summary of his existance. at his death his message and what he stood for was born in my heart. i may not change or heal the entire world, but sure i can change my world, which is what i am born able to reach.

phil | 7/9/2009, 11:10 am EST

Aside from potential revenue made from the event, there’s also the complete mismanagement of funds. It was a thrown together last minute thing so there’s no sense blaming anyone, but remember that the money went to pay for 3000 cops to control 250000 people who never showed up… not to mention a report I read that discusses waaaay too much being spent on lunch for those cops–shipped in from 80 miles outside of the city instead of getting it from one of the many local places who say they’d have done it cheaper.
And besides all of that, whether this justifies it or not–whether it needs justifying or not–and whether you like him or not, the memorial was for a guy who personally pumped millions into the economy directly or indirectly throughout his life. The burn unit he funded must have cost more.
Anyway, this type of spending happens all the time. It’s in the city’s budget. Besides, if everyone in LA just promises to behave from now on, none of that spending will have to happen.

Jughead | 7/9/2009, 11:24 am EST

Yeah Kbaby30 is right. Leave Michael Jackson alone – let him rest in peace. Because right now, while he’s dead, he’s not resting in peace. He’s slowly morphing into a zombie, churning and moaning in his casket from all the negative comments people are spewing at him, until eventually he’ll pop out of his casket and hunger for your braaaainnsss like one of those zombies in his Thriller video. Yeah, so leave him alone! We don’t want him to become a zombie! Moooaaaahhhh!

Lee | 7/9/2009, 11:32 am EST

Today you feel no light or shade
you feel just cold and alone.
The road you are now on Michael Jackson is different on your own.
But you are NOT alone – you have a love so true the golden gates have opened and left a different hue. No words can express my thoughts to you I can only say that you will come through the darkness into the light of day. Your previous loved one has entered God’s loveliest room and left the door ajar, they have not traveled far away just to the brightest star. I never had a change to see Michael Jackson live, only thru television, but my heart and prayers goes out to the entire wonderful family and children that he left on earth.

SOPRANOSING | 7/9/2009, 11:42 am EST

YOU KNOW… I’M SICK AND TIRED OF HEARING ALL THIS CRAP ON THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES SHOULDN’T HAD SPENT ALL THIS MONEY BLAH BLAH WAH WAH BUT WHAT ABOUT ALL THE MONEY THAT THIS COUNTRY HAS INVESTED IN THE PAST ON UNNECESSARY EXPENSES. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT BILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT HAVE BEEN THROWN AWAY. I’M GLAD THAT THE CITY LOS ANGELES SPEND THAT AN ESTIMATED OF 1.4 MILLIONS OF DOLLARS! MICHAEL’S MUSIC MADE A POSOTIVE EFFECT ON PEOPLE’S LIVES AND MUSIC PERIOD. SO.. LETS NOT BECOME MATERIALISTIC AND THINK ABOUT MAKING THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE. WE ARE ALL ONE! NO MATTER OUR DIFFERENT ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS AND BELIEFS WE ARE ALL PART OF THE HUMAN RACE.

Lynne | 7/9/2009, 11:47 am EST

Even in his death, some cannot stop the hate. May others be more compassionate and understanding of you, than you have been of him.
May he rest in Peace

To HMac | 7/9/2009, 11:52 am EST

Support your troops. Get them home. RIP MJ

Ann | 7/9/2009, 11:55 am EST

Please remember…Michael Jackson was also a father, who was greatly loved by his children. I lost my father a few months ago…even at 43 years old, I feel lost without him. I can’t imagine how lost these three children feel without their Dad. At least I still have my mother. These poor children don’t have that comfort…

An excerpt from the book==”The Michael Jackson Conspiracy–MUST read book!

Here, seasoned crime reporter Aphrodite Jones condemns the media for perpetuating hateful rumors and innuendoes, recounting just the sordid details, and reporting only the most despicable accusations and grisly charges made against Michael Jackson during his criminal trial. They had built a highly profitable industry around the superstar’s “freaky life” and banked on his conviction. And, it turns out, they got it all wrong.

In their efforts to make money and win ratings, the media missed the truth. It wasn’t until after the “not guilty” verdict that Jones had the insight and courage to admit her own unintentional role in the frenzy surrounding the shocking testimony, high drama, and countless celebrities in Michael Jackson’s high-profile criminal trial. Here, she makes amends with what is not only a truthful, well-documented chronicle of the entire trial but a powerful indictment against the media for conspiring to distort, dehumanize, and destroy Michael Jackson. Jones argues convincingly that the case against Jackson amounted to nothing more than a media-made, tax-paid scandal, and she makes an impassioned call to action for the public-at-large to think critically, question the integrity, and demand the truth in “the news”.

“To anyone who wants to learn what happened in the Michael Jackson courtroom, this is the book to read.” – Thomas A. Mesereau, Jr., Michael Jackson’s leadcounsel

Mj’s memorial costs:
Honestly, I think TMZ, Entertainment Mag, US Today, and many more magazine companies that love to publish stories aboy MJ, shouls also fit the bill for the memorial costs, they make lots of moneyjust selling their magz.
The cit of LA, ha, ha, they wasted money falsy acusing MJ, so I guess Karma is a catching up with them.
I hope the Jackson give NOTHING, this city is what destroyed MJ’s image with the courtcases.

MJ, you smile at them now boy, and finaly you WIN, HA ha ha.
Rest is peace now, we love you, always have and always will, you fans LOVE you more!

angela De Fiore | 7/9/2009, 1:37 pm EST

The City should pay it, and they should not be seeking donations from the public. Michael Jackson WAS and WAS FOUND innocent of all charges (and he never did anything in the first place) and his good name was slandered, his career and integrity ruined, no public apology ever given. Did I mention innocent, innocent, innocent? So yes, the city should have to pay. There’s your public apology Michael. 2.5. Million Dollars. Rest in Peace, Baby.

CME | 7/9/2009, 1:49 pm EST

Michael Jackson was a very talented guy and was loved by alot of people all over the world.
But, just because we are fans of Michael Jackson doesnt mean that we need to pay for his memorial service. LA and the rest of California is hurting financially this is the las thing we need to add to it. His family or his record company should pay for it. Or better yet Al Sharpton!

Shamon | 7/9/2009, 2:13 pm EST

Some of you people are f’d up celebrity worshippers. You are angry with the city of LA for trying to prosecute a man accused of molesting children? Don’t direct your anger at them, charges and allogations were made by parents, it’s the gov’ts job to look into those and take people like that to trial.

If he truly was innocent, then shame on those parents and children who lied. But don’t attack the law system for trying to protect children. Man, you people need to get your priorities in order and get off celebrity’s nuts.

I’m sure many of you were 100% convinced OJ was innocent at the time… oops, guess you are just a sucker.

Like I said, MJ may have been completely innocent, I’m not attacking him in any way… just defending the people who were just doing their job.

Shamon…

Jordan | 7/9/2009, 2:24 pm EST

MJ posthumously moved 800,000 cds in one week. Maybe the MJ estate should foot the bill….?

mwoman | 7/9/2009, 2:47 pm EST

It was tacky , I thought, on the part of the city of LA, to ask for donations to pay for the services rendered during MJs memorial.

And aside from the fact that LA probably made a pretty penny from the cozy number of fans who came to pay tribute to MJ, without any expenditure on its part, well, points to how tacky it was of LA to even think to ask such a thing in the first place.

Who knows what the Jackson expenditures were for this event? I’m sure they didn’t get off without paying a cent. The city of LA did not purchase his coffin, made in some small town in rural America. Nor did it arrange the multiple configurations that were swirling in the air about how to respectfully conduct this sad event and most importantly, how to include Michael’s fans, an opportunity clamored for by over a million responses for the coveted 7,000 tickets available.

Leave this poor soul alone.

I too would have shielded my children’s face from the public.

He KNEW what he was doing.

He was good father!

Kalie | 7/9/2009, 3:12 pm EST

I hear the casket was rolled off stage n now they cant find it.well i would of had guards around it even if he is not in it.

Anna | 7/9/2009, 3:37 pm EST

Michael went through so many trials like Jesus. He was accused tried and ridiculed. They judged and made a mockery of him. Eventually they killed him. My heart breaks and I will always love him and continue to pray for his soul.He was the greatest.

Stephani | 7/9/2009, 4:21 pm EST

Maybe they should have done it PPV, ya know? $1 to watch the memorial, and not let any of the networks broadcast it. Then it could have paid for itself.

Or, better yet, not have done it at all unless it was paid for. I realize that MJ was, literally, a Worldwide superstar, but that’s a hefty price tag for a place that’s issuing IOUs

Richard | 7/9/2009, 6:21 pm EST

Wow……I can not believe such negative interpretation of reality. A great man once said “it is funny how far we have come BUT yet, how far we got to go”. Al Sharpton is not a racist. He is nothing but a messenger. He is a man (And please noted what I had just said “A MAN”: not a BLACK MAN) who lived through the hard times of our nation “Segregation”. He is also man who experience sitting at the back of a bus allowing another man “EQUAL” to take the front seats (must I go on). I do not believe in politics nor can I dictate a textbook that I have not opened. I believed in seeing is believing – who knows it feel it. Please my brother and sisters of all nations we have lost an ICON. Sometimes in life things are taken for granted and the true message is often blinded. However, we often appreciate those cases when they come out into reality. Michael Jackson is one of those cases. Let’s look at a few more Martin Luther King, Elvis Presley and even the SWINE FLU. Today we have streets and cities named after Martin Luther King. Elvis Presley is now bigger than ever before kids 5 years old are singing and listening to his music all over the word. SARS and SWINE FLUE outbreak was not a major concerns until death occurred now people all over the world are wearing mask and are a far more cautious. Michael Jackson’s death made us realized what we have all taken for granted and opened our eyes to what he have done or was apart of. In reality, if he was still with us today a lot of us may very well classified him as a child molester but his death made us all aware of what we have taken for granted. Al Sharpton reminded us and in his own word he thanks him. For those who believed Al Sharpton is racist starting with you I’m asking you to change your ways if you wanna make the world a better Place and take a look at yourself, and then make that change. Michael did and Al Sharpton witnessed it.

Oh yeah? I love Michael Jackson more than all of you!! So much so that I would like to take care of his kids and raise them. Also I would like his burial to be right in my back yard so I can see his grave everyday! Also when I die I want to be buried right next to Michael Jackson! That’s how much I love him! Long live the Jacko!

Tonya Lawson | 7/9/2009, 11:56 pm EST

Let Michael Jackson rest in peace.People should be a shamed of them selves for making comments about who the father of his kids are it’s none of their business and he was allowed to have and raise kids just like anyone else and who gives them the right to put michaels business about his kids out there for the world to hear and his kids to hear if he wanted everyone to know he would of said something his personal life with those kids were his and no one elses. Now these kids were happy with him and no one should stop the happiness of any kid I’m angered by these people who think a black man can’t raise childern of another race. But it’s ok for Madona and angelina to adopt black kids I don’t here nothing about them. Michael loved his kids and that’s that leave that family alone. People just want to start something because they can’t get a piece of michael estate and they wish they were his kids. Get a life and worry about your own kids.

just a thought... | 7/10/2009, 12:08 am EST

why not package the memorial into a dvd and incl. the booklet and donate the proceeds to offset this bill? and donate any other future monies to charity or to help pay off any debts michael had?

tij | 7/10/2009, 3:26 am EST

Michael Jackson only used veils and masks when the children were with him outside so the media and people do not know or remember their faces. Without Jackson, the children can actually go out in the street, walk in the park, go to the beach, eat in restaurants, go to ChuckECheese, etc. with their nannies or with MJ disguised as nanny and not be bombarded by paparazzi and nosy people. Now that their faces are shown to the world, they are stuck in their house because the minute someone spots them outside, that’s it- picture time and gossip to no end.
Plus the nasty remarks from people who hate Jackson. The nasty people may even shout to them when they walk outside, “Hey do you know your Dad is a molester?”
Really, the paps, media, people can be so nasty and will psychologically damage these kids. The first thing the media did was expose the children and flash their picture on the cover of magazines like OK. It is like a free for all now that MJ is gone. These kids’ private lives have gone down the drain. If anything, Blanket will be the most psychologically damaged by the media/people because he will not understand what’s going on.
The media is very powerful, you go on a honeymoon with them then suddenly they destroy you and it catapults to the rest of the people destroying you. Poor kids. Their lives were normal with MJ. Now it will be very abnormal, everyday they will be criticized by the media and public. Every move will be watched, every picture will be dissected and criticized.

tij | 7/10/2009, 3:31 am EST

HERE COMES THE TABLOIDS – starting with this OK!!!!
That’s why MJ shielded his children from the media, covered their faces when he was with them so the media would not do to the children what they did to Jackson.

The veils and masks were there so that the people will NOT remember their faces and the children can actually go out, walk around and play freely like normal children (without masks/veils & without Jackson) with their nannies without being recognized. NOW, their lives have changed forever. The media knows who they are and the media/tabloids/nosy people are going to psychologically kill the children as they did Jackson.

Ray | 7/10/2009, 7:27 pm EST

just a thought: You have an excellent idea and it would serev two purposes.

The first would be the results you mentioned. The second would be the fact so many people would be busy watching it they wouldn’t have any free time left to post love letters to the guy.

Hime | 7/10/2009, 10:35 pm EST

To Lee,
I so liked your poem type message about MJ, from all the others, that I would like to say to thank you for praising him.
I did see him, and did not really appreciate it, as it was in such a huge place, but I did see him, and he was wonderful.
I do hope that he is now at peace, but I really hope that the media, and all will let his children live on, and become whatever they want to be, without being in the spotlight at all times.
Yes, we are all curious about the stars, and their families, etc., but until something bigger or more important to the press, we will have to keep hearing about this more each day. The press has got out of hand, as far as I am concerned. Let’s let it rest for all those people who have such negative remarks, and let us pray for them to go away, and get a normal life. THINK POSSITIVE, AND LAUGH MORE.
WHO ARE ALL YOU NEGATIVE PERSONS ANYWAY, AND WHY DO YOU HAVE TO HATE SO MUCH?
When in trouble, who do you look for ?
Give me some answers, please. Most likely it would be anyone close to you at the time of your need. Then would you care about anything, including the color of ones skin, religion, or anything else, except that someone of these persons, may have saved your life?
Get real, and love everyone, or this world we live in is always going to be the same, with hate, envey, and not enough love to go around to everyday people, who just want to go out and get groceries, etc. and give a smile to others, and share a few kind words to each other, and make some one else’s day just a bit nicer. Try it , and you may like it, and it will come back to you in a nice way, believe me!!!

mina | 7/10/2009, 10:47 pm EST

He is not resting in peace because of the media.

SO congrats YOU FOOLS!

Ray | 7/11/2009, 3:55 am EST

Why is it anytime someone disagrees with someone else’s opinion, thay are automatically labeled a “HATER”? Hey, I wasn’t a Michael Jackson fan. I’ll admit he had a lot of talent and was a gifted performer, but the fact I wasn’t a fan doesn’t make me a “HATER”. I was a George Harrison fan and if you weren’t, that doesn’t mean I think of you as a “HATER”. So it has come to this, huh? Whenever we disagree on any subject, we are “HATERS”? Damn, that word gets used far too frequently. I am genuinely sorry for any MJ fan who is grieving his death but if you believe the entire world is mourning, you are living in the same fairy tale world Michael lived in. It’s a big planet, folks, with lots of different opinions. I hope you find peace. I hope Michael finds peace. I hope you eventually understand tossing around “HATE” is not the way to peace.

It is still surreal that Michael Jackson has passed. I still feel the same pain I felt upon learning of his death in my stomache until this date. I feel a large part of America lost a part of them. To date I believe the younger generation will never witness such a passing of an icon of that to the Elvis generation. Such a tragedy and loss, gutted and surreal. This was unexpected and uncalled for. We all knew he lived an eccentric life, but never realized the outcome. Watching his memorial and his family and his childrens views, I truly still feel empty for this man. He was truly a great talent, the way he wrote and his generosity toward mankind was unbelievable. I truly believe he never had a childhood and tried to show children what he could not have, I never believed he would touch a child. I hope one day when these children who accusted him are like 30 years old they clear his name. Life is too short and their parents were gold diggers at the time. Either way Michael Jackson is in a better place, away from the media and the accusations, may the good lord bless him. His legacy will live n in the music and hearts of many people who grew up with him. Rest now Michael and thank you.
