Mariah Carey Apologizes For Jackson Memorial Performance, Says She Was Choking Back Tears

7/9/09, 12:21 pm EST

Mariah Carey has apologized to fans for what she considers a sub par performance of the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” at the Michael Jackson memorial concert on July 7th at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. The singer took to her Twitter to explain to fans that she was so overcome with grief that her emotions affected her ability to sing, Us Weekly reports. Video of Carey’s “I’ll Be There” performance is above.

(Check out photos from Michael Jackson’s all-star memorial.)

“Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me,” she writes. “I could barely keep myself from crying. I’m sorry that I wasn’t able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me. One thing I know is, we will never really have to say goodbye to MJ. His legacy lives on through his music and the millions of people. He inspired with his timeless music. He will be forever in our hearts.”

While it’s true that Carey’s performance at the memorial doesn’t match the “I’ll Be There” from her 1992 MTV Unplugged, she does genuinely seem emotionally overwhelmed while singing at the Jackson memorial, especially with Jackson’s casket spotlighted right in front of her as she and Trey Lorenz duet on the song. “I am heartbroken. My prayers go out to the Jackson family, and my heart goes out to his children. Let us remember him for his unparalleled contribution to the world of music, his generosity of spirit in his quest to heal the world & the joy he brought to his millions of devoted fans throughout the world. I feel blessed to have performed with him several times & to call him my friend,” Carey wrote hours after Jackson’s death on June 25th. “No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever.”

It could have been a touching performance but carey was so overly emoting with the hand gestures it was embarrassing. it was intentional. mariah carey making it all about her. the apology as well. nick cannon is right – she didn’t have to apologize. she did so to once again direct attention to herself.

Missy | 7/9/2009, 12:54 pm EST

She is a good singer, but… She’s not what she used to be! :(

Joe | 7/9/2009, 12:58 pm EST

Mariah carey needs to apologize for her insanely irritating voice.

Dylan | 7/9/2009, 1:28 pm EST

Michael was her friend and is someone she worked with multiple times…of course she is gonna be emotional and not be “perfect”. Even Stevie wonder (who is NEVER off-key) missed a few notes. I think she was perfect. And people judging vocals AT A MEMORIAL of all fucking things is a joke. She was the only one that didn’t have time to rehearse (according to multiple reporters on hand) and she was AMAZING AND REAL.

Judy | 7/9/2009, 1:32 pm EST

Mariah doesn’t need to apologize for being choked up while trying to sing, it was obvious she was overcome by the sight of Michael’s casket right in front of her.

I was rather distracted by her hand gestures though. This is a habit she has always had. Why can’t somebody coach her to break the habit, it is super distracting.

If Mariah should apologize about anything, it would be the plunging neckline on her dress. It was in extreme poor taste and entirely inappropriate for a funeral/ memorial service. That is the only thing she should be apologizing about.

scott | 7/9/2009, 1:54 pm EST

Mariah used to be one of my favorite singers. After seeing her on M.J’s funeral, She isnt anymore. She thinks the show is about her, not M.J.She is still gorgeous though.

The quality of live performances in the music industry in aggregate continue to diminish as many singers rely on backing tracks, lip synching, samples or other means to augment or supplant their live act. It is unfortunate, but the Michael Jackson Memorial event does serve as an example of what I feel to be the deteriorating art of live performance.

Mariah Carey has placed herself front and center in this debate with her claim that her sub-par performance at the Memorial event was a response to the emotional state that she was in. Her flawless and moving performance of “I’ll Be There” on MTV Unplugged in March 1992 captured Mariah Carey at her live performance peak. Widely available clips of the singer performing live since that time serve as undeniable evidence of her live vocal decline. To make matters worse, it has been widely reported that she has lip synched.

The singer seems to rely heavily upon “vocal riffing” both live and in the studio rather than the clear soulful singing augmented by the tremendous vocal range and breath control Mariah Carey displayed early in her career. Listeners are left to ponder whether this drop in performance quality is the result of confining popular music trends, an absence of proper vocal technique practice, a loss of passion for performance, personal matters or some other factor. The Michael Jackson Memorial event merely served as another example of Mariah Carey’s dwindling live abilities rather than an exception to the rule.

The live performance quality issue is much broader than just Mariah Carey. Until the 1990’s artists relied heavily on their live performances to attract record label offers. Until the 1980’s, it was virtually impossible to obtain a record contract without a solid live performance. Artists would toil for years playing small clubs and touring before they would have the chance to record in a professional studio. Today image is the main selling point in popular music and live performance is merely another means to make money. Teens were long ago identified as the primary consumers of music and the lion’s share of advertising and marketing dollars are spent to reach this audience.

Thank God for U2 then, eh Warren? Live is where they live.

Jeff | 7/9/2009, 3:05 pm EST

She could have always lip-synced…

What a shitty world we live in where a live singer feels the need to apologize for a few flat notes.

David Duke | 7/9/2009, 4:04 pm EST

She should apologize for being a Porto Rickan wigger lover.

Molo | 7/9/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Mariah is the only solo artist to have 18 #1 hits. Does anyone remember more than a handful, if that?

Funny her back up singers and Trey were able to hold their own while she spazzed out. Please stop making excuses for her. Has she never been to a funeral before? Has she never suffered loss? The Jackson family asked her to perform and in turn she gave them a horrible performance. Nice work Mariah, you dreadful asshole.

Whew! | 7/9/2009, 4:15 pm EST

Wow, Molo, way to pass judgment. How was your performance?

Choochoopee | 7/9/2009, 4:25 pm EST

Oh is “I’ll Be There” the song that Mariah Carey sang at the memorial? I was too busy looking at her luscious cans to realize what song she was singing.

Gio | 7/9/2009, 4:54 pm EST

you guys are such idiots! If you have EVER lost anyone remotely close to you, you would know and appreciate HOW difficult singing at this service would have been. The fact that you are bad-mouthing Mariah for apologizing is utterly sad and a gross display of stupidity. I am not a fan of hers but do appreciate her sentiment and the event.

julie | 7/9/2009, 5:05 pm EST

Mariah just lost my respect for deliberately lying
About why her performance wasn’t perfection. Mariah wasn’t overcome with emotion. Please! She lost her ability to reach those high pitches years ago. The MJ performance wasn’t any exception. ” Mariah, the cats out of the bag. We all know your voice isn’t what it use to be “. I could easily notice her clinching her ear attempting to reach those high notes. Let’s look back at recent Mariah performances & we will see that its the same result. Seriously get over yourself Mariah and stop trying to save face!!!

Wale | 7/9/2009, 5:50 pm EST

We all gona die one day, why dont we live maria alone.she as honour micheal even in death and in front of his casket. What more can we say jackson is gone 4eve and carey is still alive 2 make things right.

alesha | 7/9/2009, 7:25 pm EST

why would you hate on Carey for saying sorry..It was a very sad day for everyone. Was she suposed to be happy and cheerful that he was dead?? I think She did the best she could in this situation..I love u mariah and mj.

stupid crybabies | 7/9/2009, 7:26 pm EST

,,,leave the girl alone,,,,she was emotional,,,,nay-sayers can go “F” off.

cybercat | 7/9/2009, 7:36 pm EST

What was she thinking wearing such a low cut dress to a memorial service. I realize she was performing, but come on, it was about MJ and not about her and looking at her chest. The day wasn’t about you, Mariah. Wear something appropriate to the occasion.

seriously?!! | 7/9/2009, 7:51 pm EST

Awwww….way to make this about yourself Mariah instead of remembering that you’re there to honor the memory of the departed. Come to think of it, you should be apologizing… for every time you open your mouth sound like a self-absorbed idiot, you can’t sing w/out making ridiculous hand motions that disguise the fact that you lip-sync, your choice in men and for EVERY outfit that over exaggerate your tits!

Cherrie | 7/9/2009, 8:57 pm EST

She always does too much..She has no class what so ever..I never liked her anyways….RIP MJ

Peter | 7/9/2009, 9:03 pm EST

SB | 7/9/2009, 9:13 pm EST

Not surprised at this at all.. She never has class..

pacesetter | 7/9/2009, 9:21 pm EST

You people are the biggest bunch of Sociopathic, hateful assholes Ive ever come across. Get some help!! Seriously the net really opens your eyes to complete worthless pieces of shit there are out there.
Where do you people come anyway, none of you probly have accomplished anything in your whole poor pathetic lives and to make yourselves look even less than human you come on a site to criticise and abuse someone’s performance at a funeral. Wake up to yourselves!!!!

Imp | 7/9/2009, 9:22 pm EST

I stayed up all night and thought this over and I decided that I will accept her apology if she never performs in public ever again. Deal?

Toni | 7/9/2009, 10:41 pm EST

She lost her voice indeed. She is not the old Mariah anymore.
And, this performance really really sucked,I am like, what is she thinking…!? Anyways…apologising was the right thing to do after that failed performance.

tina | 7/9/2009, 11:05 pm EST

trey lorenz should of done the whole song alone woulda been great

Rachael | 7/9/2009, 11:06 pm EST

Mariah gave a heartfelt performance, in which she need not apologize for, she is an amazing vocalist, she has proven it to the world with her umteen music awards, number 1 hits, she is still producing music, and she has her fans to support her through it all!!! It just goes to show we are all human when we are faced with the loss of a friend and our true emotion is unveiled, she is and always will be an amazing singer, much love to Mariah!!!!!!!!

tina | 7/9/2009, 11:06 pm EST

HER VOICE GOT TOO WAY TOO HUSKY

some things never change. | 7/9/2009, 11:07 pm EST

i think it is so sad that literally none of you learned anything from the terrible loss of michael. your still bring eachother down, insulting and negative. you think people would learn a thing or two after all michael went through and how misunderstood he really was. try giving mariah the benefit of the doubt.

adam | 7/9/2009, 11:24 pm EST

she sounded okay, she didn’t have to apologize. jonus bros get away with way worse atrocities on a regular basis. her hand jives were dumb though.

just a comment | 7/10/2009, 1:02 am EST

It is amazing to see how many sides to this people can create. There is nothing to seriously debate. It is Mariah Carey, u either love her or hate her. She wore a low cut dress, so what. She uses her hands to help herself bring out the emotion she needs to perform, so what. She became emotional, so what. She was not only there to honor her friend, but an idol, a mentor. Has anyone stopped to think of the impact this man had on her life in a personal and professional way or how many artists wouldn’t have been able to even get out a note? Didn’t see Janet up there singing? Oh yeah I forgot u can’t expect someone who just suffered a life changing sudden loss to perform flawlessly for millions.

whitetrash | 7/10/2009, 1:53 am EST

I’ve always hated her, fake boobs fat face bitch!

missingmj | 7/10/2009, 3:29 am EST

the guy was absolutely phenomenal…amazing voice.

Shokry | 7/10/2009, 9:33 am EST

Dont forget that she lost her father just 7 years ago on JULY 4, and she is the only performer that does not rehearse, it was a last moment wish from the Jackson family and you as the first performer she was “shocked” to find herself just feets from MJ coffin ..She did great job she didn’t brok into tears like Usher..She’s professional .

Charlo | 7/10/2009, 12:52 pm EST

Can you guys get of M.C’s back. she’s just perfect love it ,leave it. Go hung!!!

Nina | 7/10/2009, 1:19 pm EST

I am not a MC fan by ANY means. But,I do feel she was sincere. First of all,it was a memorial not a paid performance,so she was caught up in the emotions she was feeling. She owes us no apology. It’s not like we paid for her concert and she gave a bad show. These people have feelings too. If a loved one dies, they grieve as we do. My God give them a break! They’re only human.(Well most of em anyway). It was touching that it was not staged, not fake, she gave me the impression of being someone that was trying to get thru the moment. My family requested I sing at the funeral of my grandmother, and I did fine until the end,my emotions got the best of me. It’s hard even for the pros

Where was AUTOTUNE when we needed it??

Timmy | 7/10/2009, 2:05 pm EST

wow her performance was INSPIRING & AMAZING ! she was clearly fighting back a lot of emotion, but still sang beautifully !
all you negative people need to SHUT UP ! this was an amazing heartfelt performance, what more do you need ?

jacko | 7/10/2009, 2:26 pm EST

Mariah did her best. She started shaky (must be the emotions), but as she went on her voice became clearer and clearer until she did those powerful adlibs in the end (”even though the pain and heartache…”).

Powerful, moving performance Mariah. No need to apologize.

Fan | 7/10/2009, 9:43 pm EST

I feel like she has nothing to apologize about because practically every1 there must have been feeling very upset.

Imp | 7/11/2009, 7:19 pm EST

Annoying as always. We will accept your apology if you retire.

Fred | 7/12/2009, 4:27 am EST

Please everyone have a heart.
Everyone who loved Mj. Is having a hard time so stop with the mean, &`nd heartless Comments. And I hate to see someone feel bad. Don’t do that to her let her be. She did wonderful.

kingsley | 7/16/2009, 9:32 am EST

mariah seeemed to have cried with her voice before the performance and that is quite unfortunate.

artists have a large heart and we need to understatnd how emotional things can get with people close to us.

mrmoney | 7/18/2009, 6:04 pm EST

Yeah, she definitely did not give her greatest performance. I will say that Usher broke down in tears, but not only did he give a good performance, he went and touched the casket. Hell, even Jermaine did a good job and that was his brother.

Celeste | 7/19/2009, 8:59 pm EST

She should’ve apologized for the inappropriate attire! She dressed as if she was going out to a club. She should have had more respect for MJ and his family. It wouldn’t have hurt to show some class at such an occasion.

Regardless of the emotions, it is safe to say that Ms. Carey has not produced an album as of late with the same vocal integrity of her earlier years. The clear divide is from when she had her nervous breakdown to when her alter ego Mimi was introduced. I am now convinced that the cause of her breakdown was related to the loss of her voice which is a true tragedy. Being a singer myself, I can completely understand how devastated I would feel if I lost my voice.

As a performer, however, being grief stricken can affect product, however, a true professional would be able to adapt to the situation.

At the end of the day – it really doesn’t matter because it was in the past, but Ms. Carey should not feel she has to lie about what is clearly the obvious factor – she has lost her range because of years of abuse to her instrument.

Lastly – she was on the today show the other day giving gifts to a “Make a Wish” child with terminal cancer. Meredith asked her to sing the little girl’s favorite song a cappella and Ms. Carey declined stating it was “too early” in the AM.

JoNell | 7/27/2009, 9:56 pm EST

i think she didnt nede to apologize because she loved him so much and for her to no him well and go up there and sing that is hard. so anyone who thinks she did a bad job, i want you to sing at someones funeral that you really care about and not mess up or start to cry because she had to sing in front of millions of people and even though she messed up she rocked. go mariah!!!!!

Mechelle | 8/3/2009, 2:44 pm EST

Did I read some people making a big deal that she made hand gestures … ugh, who cares

Marie Thorell | 10/13/2009, 11:08 am EST

I read only some of the comments. They very well illustrate how sick this society is. I’ve never paid attention to her before, but she was the best of the entertainers, fitting and proper to have her on first. I would never be able to sing that song in that situation without doing more sobbing.
