Incubus Cover Prince, Collect Their Hits on “Monuments and Melodies”

Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd isn’t scared of releasing a greatest hits album, even if it shows his age. After all, he got into some of his favorite artists, like Elvis Costello and Leonard Cohen, through their greatest hits collections. “It was weird at first, coming to terms with the whole idea of doing it,” Boyd says about compiling Monuments and Melodies, a two-disc set of hits and rarities. “Years and years ago, we came to terms with the fact that we weren’t a new band anymore, and it was a little bit of a humbling process to go through. I guarantee there are people out there like, ‘Wait a minute, I feel like I was just in high school discovering this band, and they have a greatest hits record out?’ ”

Formed in Calabasas, California, in 1991, Incubus are inching towards their 20th year, making the band only a year younger than Pearl Jam, contemporaries of Counting Crows, Dave Matthews Band and Rage Against the Machine, and actually two years older than Oasis. The band’s earliest experiments in funk and rap metal are a source of tremendous embarrassment to Boyd, and any tunes from that era are conspicuously absent from Monuments and Melodies, as he says those songs “continually haunt me in the darkest portions of my dreams.”

The collection’s first disc brings together all of the band’s major hits, such as “Drive,” “Pardon Me,” “Warning” and “Stellar,” as well as two new songs written specifically for the compilation. The second album comprises odds and ends that didn’t make Incubus’ previous LPs, including a faithful, recently recorded take on Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” the first cover song the band has ever put to tape. It’s a song Incubus has been known to close its live sets with, but the band had trepidations about making a studio version.

“That song definitely walked a very fine line for us as far as whether or not it should have been done in the first place,” Boyd says. “We thought it would be sort of sacrilegious to try and redo it. But as we were mastering the album, somebody said, ‘Just finish the Prince song, just to see,’ so we finished it and said, ‘Dammit, it sounds really good. Fuck it.’ And we just put it on there.”

Incubus will hit the road starting today (July 9th) in San Diego, with plans to play primarily a hits set, but also to dig out a few tracks from the band’s earlier days, particularly some tunes from the band’s 1997 album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., which haven’t been played in years. “We didn’t hate these songs, but we played them 500 times, so it was time to put them away,” he says. “We had started to morph them just for the sake of changing them, but now we’re playing them verbatim in their original incarnations, and they’re really fun.”

Boyd predicts that the band will end up writing the bulk of its next record while on tour, and there’s a chance that a few new tunes may pop up here and there. But in the meantime, he’s content to do a bit of reminiscing and deliver the hits. “Time definitely flies when you’re on the road all the time,” he says. “I blinked and I was through my twenties. We’ve had a year at home and normal life has kind of crept its way in for the first time, but now everyone’s getting real excited and is ready to go and rock out for a couple months this summer and get back into that chaotic bubble again.”

Wow, great news I’m eager to listen to the new Incubus’ album !!! Thanks !!

DC | 7/9/2009, 11:41 am EST

So, they’re releasing a GH/B-sides album because they’re an “older” band, and yet ignoring the first six years of music and only include one song (an acoustic b-side) from the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. era? They’re embarrassed by this earlier era, and yet include a cover of Prince’s Let’s Go Crazy?
I’m sorry, but I can no longer respect this band. Can’t say I’ve been a fan since the leap into pop music with the Morning View album, but now that I know this… I’m just dissapointed to know that the band I was really into is gone forever.

Adam | 7/9/2009, 12:23 pm EST

In complete agreement with DC. It’s a shame that they are ignoring the earlier work (i.e. SCIENCE, Fungus Agumgus, Enjoy Incubus). It was those funk-metal songs that stood them apart and really got my attention. Songs like Hot Dancer are too good to be passed up. I haven’t been a fan since they’ve gone “soft” (same thing with the Chili Peppers) and it’s sad to know that they’ve just become another pop-rock band churning out garbage…just my $0.02.

dr patio | 7/9/2009, 12:37 pm EST

I knew “Drive” was the beginning to the end…

I need more SCIENCE.

I love how.... | 7/9/2009, 1:12 pm EST

a band evolves and you have a segment of fans who prefer the old stuff regardless. SCIENCE and Fungus Amungus were both mediocre at best. Morning View, Make Yourself, and Light Grenades are both their most commercially accessible and musically sharp albums.

Swingline | 7/9/2009, 1:26 pm EST

Remember when “S.C.I.E.N.C.E.” was passed on to me by a friend as one of those “check this out” albums and instantly loving it.

Like the previous posts, think that album showed they both stood a little different than the other rap/metal acts, but also showed a world of potential given their musicianship.

Once they hit mainstream, the shit went flat real quick. It was like they started fining members for actually showing their chops and forsaking that for some mopey, introspective, dime-a-dozen, “Blah” rock.

That’s when Incubus should have let Boyd go ruin a solo career like that and kept the original funk-driven sound in tact for the group.

Yeah.... | 7/9/2009, 2:19 pm EST

…cause Incubus wants to be a RHCP/311 ripoff. Thank God they didnt go down that tired path.

when incubus attacks | 7/9/2009, 5:46 pm EST

Hotdancer | 7/10/2009, 1:29 am EST

ahhhh….the consequence of evolution..you either make one style of music for the rest of your life or change for creativities sake and your fans will still hate you for it…it’ s no win situation for any band.and i’m still a fan..unless they start touring with shitty bands like limp bizkit or nickelback.

Shut Up and Enjoy Incubus | 7/10/2009, 9:54 am EST

I wish everyone would stop critisizing this amazing band. Over the years they have gotten better and better. Yes, they’ve changed from the band they used to be, but name one band that hasn’t. I too was surprised that they’ve released a greatest hits album so early in their career before realizing that they’ve been active since the early 90s. However, I’d say it’s a safe bet that the majority of their fans didn’t start listening until 1999, the year Make Yourself came out.

Respect for Incubus. | 7/10/2009, 11:30 am EST

Everybody’s on the purple road these days.

Prince rules!

ac | 7/10/2009, 1:45 pm EST

am I the only one that thinks A Crow Left of the Murder is a really good album?

bella | 7/10/2009, 2:09 pm EST

i agree hotdancer

BFunk | 7/10/2009, 2:11 pm EST

Everyone saying SCIENCE was a bad album obviously is 16 right now with your teen beat brandon boyd posters on the wall. If it wasn’t for SCIENCE, you would never have heard of this band, it was groundbreaking and amazing. I still listen to all incubus albums but their newest material is the same recycled formulaic rock they’ve been doing for a while now. It would be an extremely fresh breath of air if we could get some of that original funk sound back in the mix. and to be “embarrassed” by your original material which got you your real fans, shame on you for that comment boyd, thats bs.

Opinination! | 7/10/2009, 2:20 pm EST

I loved Make Yourself and Morningview and bought the older stuff and it was way to loud and weird. I like their commercial period. They lost me on Crow and Light Grenades. I understand they want to be all cool and be different but I hate bands that act like they’re above being successful. Incubus doesn’t even sound like they want people to like their music. When only critics like your music then you’ve really lost your fan base because they only like stuff that doesn’t sell. I don’t see anything wrong with doing good music and yet being somewhat commercial.

Stephen G | 7/11/2009, 7:43 pm EST

This guy below me wouldn’t know a talented and creative band if it kicked him in the teeth. Incubus makes records because they love doing so! The lyrics are poetry and the music is transendiary. If u want a commercial band go jump on Green Day’s band wagon so they can spoon feed you your opinions on art. No hard feelings though lol:)

Jeff | 7/12/2009, 12:33 am EST

Hey Adam I wasn’t aware that Incubus put out and album called Fungus Agumgus. You should check out Fungus Amongus. It’s pretty cool, too. I would have liked to hear some S.C.I.E.N.C.E on M&M too but who am I to chastise them for deciding not to put it on there? I have a question for all of you who think Incubus sold out because they dont make new funk shit. Do you still watch cartoons? People grow up. These are 30+ year old men. If they were still putting out shit like Nebula or Redefine then people would say that they are immature. The music they put out is like a snapshot of where they are in their lives at that particular moment (lame but true). I may be biased but I have found genius in every single Incubus album. Oh and AC… I fucking love Crow man. The guitar work from Einziger is nuts on that album. Anyway Incubus kicks ass and if you want to catch an amazing live show this summer you should definitely check them out.

jb | 7/12/2009, 1:53 pm EST

Brandon Boyd was talking about Fungus Amongus not SCIENCE. I dont blame him for saying that, they were 15 and 16 years old when they did that album and it is nothing but a demo record. They were B-Sides at best. For all those crying for them to return to SCIENCE form…why? I like Science but that was almost 15 years ago. People change, they are not kids anymore. So you want 30 year olds to act and write about things that a 18 year old is going through. Incubus have gotten better and better. Seen them live 5 times and it is incredible experience. Ive also seen RHCP(the new stuff is better by the way),Pearl Jam and U2 live multible times and they are just as good live. Besides Incubus never wanted to do a greatest hits album but the record company forced them to release one before they put out another new release, it’s in the contract. They only got excited about it because they realized they got into some of their favorite bands through greatest hit albums. Again Brandon Boyd wasnt talking about Science when he was saying he was embarrased. They wouldnt be playing songs from the disc in their concerts if they were. But the fact is that stuff is not good enough to make the greatest hits album. I love the direction this band is going.

Angelica | 7/12/2009, 5:53 pm EST

I think its awesome!

BFunk | 7/14/2009, 11:28 pm EST

I’ll take speak free over anything they’ve released in the last 3 albums. you dont know good music if you think there was nothing good on fungus. dont deny the past which got you here. incubus albums in order of awesomeness.
1.SCIENCE 2. Fungus Amongus 3. Make Yourself 4. more of the same. ps. incubus what the hell happened to having good bass on your records?

that guy | 7/14/2009, 11:30 pm EST

hey brandon….i think ive grown a gray watching you procrastinate writing good music anymore.

Rachelsun | 7/15/2009, 2:02 am EST

Artists need to be true to themselves which is what Incubus does. They have amazing material on each of their albums. Like someone else said artists grow and they would not have lasted this long if they kept making the same music they did at 15 & 16 over and over. they are an amazing group of musicians and that includes Ben their present bassist for anyone w/ ears.Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out. Others will take your place and the true fans who appreciate good music will stay. As for being “commercial” what does that even mean? No one goes to their concerts because critics say so. Last I looked they have never been favored by commercial critics. Their success is due to their fans who luv their music.

Casey | 7/21/2009, 11:14 pm EST

I fell in love with Incubus back in the day. And I have to say, the last two albums were JUST as good as any. “Sick Sad Little World” is probably my favorite song from Incubus (I stand firm that it SHOULD have been the second single, not that ‘Talkshow’ song)
The guitar work from Einziger has only gotten WAY faster, crazier, and original – for certain songs. Which brings me to my point, ‘cus none of the cool songs from the last two albums even got to be singles. So none of them are even on this greatest hits album, which is a shame. I think some of their commercial floppynes has been because of lack of boldness with singles, at least since Meglomaniac.
Either way, for rock that is also about love songs, Incubus actually does it fairly right. Light grenades was pretty good, my Parents would probably love it. Maybe that’s exactly whats got the SCIENCE lovers worked up, lol.
Depending on what direction they go in next though, Incubus might prove to turn into a beloved band, as they already are to many fans, and they might actually only get better and better from here- maybe. I just hope they get a little bolder. Here’s to good health to Incubus. ^^

suzyqn | 7/28/2009, 11:29 pm EST

I came to Incubus late in life, in my 40’s. I really like everything, because I didn’t get to hear it all new as it came out. I got to learn it in whatever order it came to me. My first Incubus cd was Make Yourself. Man. What an experience. If I think I like a band I find ways to listen many times in a short period of time. I had a 30 minute commute to work for a year and a half. I played that cd probably 3 times a week for 3 months. Incubus is still one of my first choices when I play music. I’m 52 now and just saw them for the first time at Mile High Fest. They came out with “A Certain Shade of Green” and I was jumping up and down from the first “wah wah wah wah”. Couldn’t believe it. So cool. They have an array of sounds but it’s all evolved. If they’d stayed where they were in 91, we’d probably be calling them something like, oh, who hasn’t changed much in almost 20 years? Primus? I don’t know, it’s a guess. But, Incubus has nothing to be ashamed of. I’d see them again tomorrow.

Chill421 | 8/1/2009, 9:16 pm EST

Anyone questiong my incubus love,
I’ve seen them live, 10 times now? and…do You know about their
‘rock Oddessy’?
Anyway.
Quit wishing them to be something they arent. I love SCIENCE, its when I was turned onto them…I will forever love it.. but Dirk is Gone.
Mike told me himself that the funk rock sound they had sounds cheesy to him now, musically, that Flea is the only one who can do it because..he’s Flea. lol
(I’m paraphrasing)

And yea, I was a bit dissapointed w. LG myself, Love Hurts, Oil and Water… not great. But Light Grenades and Pendulous threads are top notch rockers. And I know that the sony contract is the only reason they’ve put out a greatest hits, but look at disc2, even for me, there are 4 or 5 songs I’d never heard before.

Mike has also said that he feels their best album is still yet to come, I tend to agree with him on such things.

I just appreciate them for what they are, I will always be an incubus fan, however they change, I will give it a chance to be what it is, you cant compare everything to SCIENCE or Make Yourself, as tempting as it might be.

And if you dont like incubus,
why are you reading this…
But also, you just havent heard enough their non-single stuff..
Ala, Sick Sad Little World. Make Yourself. The Warmth. Anti Gravity Love Song. A Certain Shade of Green. Consequence. New Skin….
The list could go on all day…

I’m just glad to know they exist more like a family than a band and know we’ll be getting incubus records for years and years to come.

INCUBUS' #1 FAN | 8/18/2009, 1:06 am EST

ive seen people say that they’re a “pop-rock” band on here. A “commercial” band on here. I’ve literally read every post. This is ridiculous. They’re absolutely none of the above. These guys are incredible musicians. I’ve grown up with them. I LOVE every single album… simply because of their musicianship. Brandon’s lyrics are simply incredible and Mike is my biggest influence in guitar. Jose is out of this world. Ben fits great with their current style. Brandon was commenting on Fungus Amungus. They wrote that stuff in high school. they’re in their mid 30’s now. They’ve simply grown up. I’m sorry but you guys don’t know a good band when you hear one. INCUBUS is amazing.

Dr. Funk | 10/18/2009, 1:29 pm EST

All of incubus’s albums are great. you can’t compare them because they are different styles, but if you say they are a bad band then obviously you have no idea what good music is
