“Guitar Hero 5 ” Adds Bob Dylan, Kings of Leon To Eclectic Set List

7/9/09, 9:47 am EST

Activision has revealed two dozen songs from Guitar Hero 5’s massive 85-song on-disc set list, including tracks by Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Coldplay and John Mellencamp. The game will also feature a bunch of newer tracks, like Kings of Leon’s “Sex on Fire,” Beck’s “Gamma Ray” and Wolfmother’s “Back Round,” a fresh tune from the Australian rockers that’s available now as a free download up on the GH5 Website.

Rock Daily took a test drive with GH5 at this year’s E3 convention, trying out new features like the RockFest option and the instrument-swapping Party Mode. Guitar Hero 5 will be released on September 1st, giving it an eight-day head start on Harmonix/MTV Games’ The Beatles: Rock Band. As previously announced, GH5’s eclectic set list will also feature the Rolling Stone’s Sympathy for the Devil, Nirvana’s “Lithium,” the White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid,” TV on the Radio, Kiss and many more. For the latest batch of songs on the GH5 track list, including songs from the Beastie Boys, Tom Petty and Vampire Weekend, keep reading.

Of all the QOTSA song to choose from, they chose ‘Make It Wit Chu’? That is probably the weakest track in their career. Good to so see some of the other tracks in the mix though.

Thanks, but Rock Band/Beatles will be getting my money instead.

JasonTH | 7/9/2009, 2:15 pm EST

I was hoping the QotSA song was going to be “Go With the Flow”. And I was also hoping for “Loser” from Beck instead of something new.

Wow | 7/9/2009, 4:58 pm EST

That Coldplay song sticks out like a sore thumb.

bt88 | 7/9/2009, 5:44 pm EST

theyre clearly running out of ideas if Coldplay and Beastie Boys are on the game

ME | 7/9/2009, 6:58 pm EST

I appreciate including Dylan, but it must be pretty boring to actually play All Along the Watchtower on GH. Like a Rolling Stone might be better.

My two cents

Jared | 7/9/2009, 7:11 pm EST

I’m glad to see Vampire Weekend and Kings of Leon making it on there, but why did they choose a couple of their worst songs? A-Punk and Sex on Fire is the best they could come up with?

stupid KingsofLeon | 7/9/2009, 7:20 pm EST

,,,,,terrible band,,,,should call themselves Kings of Crappy Music or something similar,,,,they suck!

Anonymous | 7/9/2009, 7:29 pm EST

Please, stop including songs that shouldn’t be classified as Guitar Hero tracks. I mean, I love Coldplay, but you certainly don’t have to be a guitar hero to play their songs.

ryan | 7/9/2009, 7:46 pm EST

screw this – when is GH Van Halen coming out????

stupid RS | 7/9/2009, 8:10 pm EST

these guys are the BEST BAND EVER!!! Not really, but someone at RS deleted my last post saying these guys stink,,,,,whats up RS?

To Jared | 7/9/2009, 10:14 pm EST

Come on… do you think this is Pitchfork? “Sex on Fire” and “A-Punk” are easily the most famous songs by Kings of Leon and Vampire Weekend, respectively.

And, I would add, arguably their respective best.

andad | 7/9/2009, 10:29 pm EST

THRICE :)

Fuckin Guitar Hero | 7/9/2009, 11:49 pm EST

Its hard to imagine how some people actually buy each guitar hero that is released

kate | 7/10/2009, 12:07 am EST

heathen2002 | 7/10/2009, 12:31 am EST

Glad to see Jeff Back on here..

yeah | 7/10/2009, 12:32 am EST

i think the golden age of guitar hero is long past. this is like seasons 14+ of the simpsons, just a bunch of crappy retreads. there’s 5 buttons, people. same game after a while.

heathen2002 | 7/10/2009, 12:32 am EST

Sorry..Jeff Beck

Ya Dig | 7/10/2009, 12:43 am EST

Rapftw | 7/10/2009, 3:29 am EST

to the guy who wrote to jared | 7/10/2009, 10:35 am EST

kings of leon’s best stuff comes from their first album, but there’s no way they’re putting trani or molly’s chamber on. and i agree same game after a while, but i did wanna know what elliott smith song even though i knew it was gonna be a song from figure 8

QOTSA | 7/10/2009, 11:56 am EST

Can’t believe all of you haters..’Make it Wit Chu’ is an awesome QOTSA song. Great solo and the sweetest sounding “I wanna F’ you” type of song ever, ha.

Frank Sabotka's ghost | 7/10/2009, 12:02 pm EST

You funkin’ losers who care about this stuff will be asking yourselves a few years from now or maybe as soon as tomorrow: “How come music sucks these days?”. You’ll forget 5 minutes later you asked this and then you’ll turn on your crack box and play Guitar Zero. Congratulations jackasses.

Matt | 7/10/2009, 2:07 pm EST

they should have put “charmer” by kings of leon on there.

Kliff | 7/10/2009, 5:15 pm EST

I have to say, someone just burned me the new Kings of Leon cd and I love it! I’m usually listening to Motorhead, The Ramones or The Sex Pistols type stuff but damn, those guys have great songs!

capthowdy | 7/10/2009, 5:44 pm EST

its sad that a game called guitar hero has a bunch of no rocking songs. hell world tour was a joke coldplay no thank you or beastie boys instead of putting the 15min of fame bands on there get real rock songs.

Anonymous | 7/10/2009, 6:32 pm EST

they forgot muse “plug in baby” – what a riff..

Matt Bellamy | 7/10/2009, 6:32 pm EST

Muse’s “Plug in Baby” is also on there – what a riff….

Brien Comerford | 7/10/2009, 8:35 pm EST

Jeff Beck’s “Scatterbrain” is a frenetic and riveting instrumental classic.

Mike | 7/11/2009, 12:34 pm EST

Cool!

moss | 7/11/2009, 4:19 pm EST

Why would they choose the absolute worst songs by kings of leon and white stripes? its as if they took the least guitar songs from those bands possible. i am boggled

Rose Hill Drive | 7/12/2009, 2:29 am EST

Jeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhh! “Sneak Out” is the jam!

Anonymous | 7/12/2009, 8:34 am EST

Some people get way to worked up over this! chill out, listen to some music, do something, it is a freakin game.

What the??? | 7/12/2009, 8:23 pm EST

This is probably the absolute WORST set list that GH has ever produced!!!

Bob Dylan? Beck? Beastie Boys? Iggy Pop? Coldplay? WTF is going on here? Have they lost it completely? This is NOT guitar music!! It is sub-par ‘fillers’ that have no place in that game at all. I mean, is there even a guitar in “Lust for Life”? Doesn’t sound like on if there is, and if there is, so what…it is a S**t song, and should have nothing to do with GH.

I mean, to thier credit, they did pick a few good bands, like QOTSA, Thrice, Children of Bodom, Wolfmother etc. But did they pick the right songs from those bands? NO. “Make it wit chu” from QOTSA is probably the worst possible GH song that I could imagine. I mean, out of the QOTSA library, why in the hell did they choose that lame, monotinous song? How boring is that going to be to play, really.

I don’t even want to comment about the ‘flash in the pan’ bands like: Kings of Leon and Band of Horses, I guess they are there because some people occasionally listen to crap music, well, keep them there as they seem to be popular now (for some odd reason). Maybe they might sell a few copies because they are there, who knows…

I won’t buy GH5, the worst version they EVER put out. I will stick with GH Metallica & GH greatest Hits for now, still not bored of those ones.

DrainBamage | 7/13/2009, 8:50 am EST

Actually, I like the fact that GH is moving towards more indie rock. I think they should release a game w/ all indie bands. This game isn’t all about Guitar anymore, the Bass and Drums are both have pretty robust modes now.

And as far as KoL go, they are definetly not a flash in the pan. KoL have been recording hits for the better part of the decade now.

Its just ignorant americans who think that since they aren’t spoon-fed a band on their corporatly ran radio stations then they must not be good. Any unique or original music don’t stand a chance in the U.S.; bands have to get popular somewhere else before we start taking them seriously here.

My top 5 indie bands for GH

1.Ted Leo – Me and Mia

2.Destoryer – School and the Girls Who Go There

3.The Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven

4.Kaki King – Bone Chaos in the Castle

5. Radiohead – Anyone Can Play Guitar

GH | 7/13/2009, 10:56 am EST

Where have all the heavy songs gone? Can I get some more System of a Down or Rage Against the Machine or Tenacious D? PLEASE?

TheCoz | 7/14/2009, 4:48 pm EST

Guitar Hero officially jumped the shark when Wal-Mart aired the commercial of a family, featuring a baby playing the “drums”, playing the game. This franchise was bound to get played out anyway. There are only so many songs that would be fun to play within this format.

Bob Dylan fan | 7/17/2009, 9:03 am EST

Finally, some Bob Dylan! “Watchtower” is a great song.

But I’ll probably by Beatles, I love the Beatles more.

Carlo | 7/21/2009, 6:20 pm EST

OMG Someone please stop activision. Elton John, Coldplay? Band of horses? What the hell? They’re just becoming a “Now that’s what I call music!” type of thing, just throw a new game with a bunch of new songs, I never thought I’d say this, but it’s making me kind of sick.

i've seen better | 7/22/2009, 2:11 pm EST

gh5 will have some good songs but it needs some better music, i’d also like to see a Guitar Hero: nine inch nails

andrew | 7/28/2009, 10:34 pm EST

this is the worst gh game ever!!!who would buy this crappy garbage.what happened to metal, punk, and hard rock?these aint even f***n songs

Big Daddy Pump | 8/3/2009, 11:09 am EST

I rather play Space Invaders!!!

GH5 Sucks Big Time!!

They dont know what rock is, let me tell you!!

DIO, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Rush, should i keep going on or do you get it!!!IDIOTS!!!!!

wajalama | 8/7/2009, 8:19 pm EST

this franchise is getting way out of hand…

fivniev | 8/8/2009, 9:00 am EST

vilot hill dosent even hav any guitars in it anyway guitar hero was great idea but the makers act like there on drugs

Anonymous | 8/23/2009, 12:43 am EST

oh yeah, of all the songs in the world, they just had to pick Violet Hi–

THAT SONG NOT EVEN ON THE LIST, YOU F—ING RETARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING ABOUT A SONG THAT’S NOT IN THE GAME, HOW ABOUT YOU READ THE LIST BEFORE YOU GIVE YOUR OPINION ABOUT A SONG NOT ON THE LIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anonymous | 8/23/2009, 1:37 pm EST

(EARTH CALLING BIG DADDY PUMP)

Iron Madien and Rush ARE in this game. And I think you should continue because all the bands you have listed had at least one guitar hero song.

PO'd in Minneapolis | 9/4/2009, 1:31 pm EST

Out of 85 songs I’ve found about 4 good ones. I’ll be listening to the songs on the set list before I buy any new GH game from now on. I’m thinking they just paid the big name bands for their crappiest songs to get the best bang for their buck. Most of this crap belongs in Pop Hero. Don’t they realize that they could have gotten a lot of great guitar based music really cheap from independent artists and we would have bought the game anyway?

Bill Grum | 9/6/2009, 9:31 pm EST

Kings of Leon, Coldplay, and the Beastie Boys, wow maybe I’ll buy this game for my two year old cousin. I sure hope they put the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus on the next one.
