Paul McCartney “Didn’t Believe For a Second” Michael Jackson Left Him Beatles’ Rights

When Michael Jackson passed away, many outlets (not Rock Daily, mind you) were quick to jump on a January 2009 story from U.K. tabloid the Mirror stating that the King of Pop planned to leave his 50 percent stake in the Beatles’ Sony/ATV publishing rights to Paul McCartney. However, when Jackson’s 2002 will was unearthed, it made no mention of McCartney, and all of Jackson’s assets went to the Michael Jackson Family Trust. One person who wasn’t surprised by the false report was McCartney himself, who writes in a message on his official Website that he knew all along that the Mirror’s story was fiction — and that he’s not “devastated” about failing to reclaim the Beatles’ rights.

“Some time ago, the media came up with the idea that Michael Jackson was going to leave his share in the Beatles songs to me in his will which was completely made up and something I didn’t believe for a second. Now the report is that I am devastated to find that he didn’t leave the songs to me. This is completely untrue,” McCartney writes. “I had not thought for one minute that the original report was true and therefore, the report that I’m devastated is also totally false, so don’t believe everything you read folks!”

As Rolling Stone noted in our analysis of Jackson’s tangled financial web in the days after the singer’s death, the Sony ATV stake — which also features songs by Bob Dylan and Eminem — is worth an estimated $300 to $500 million a year. However, a heavily in debt Jackson borrowed millions of dollars against his investment, so the actual fate of the stake is not yet known. Still, despite being omitted from Jackson’s will, McCartney wrote, “Though Michael and I drifted apart over the years, we never really fell out, and I have fond memories of our time together.”

What a real cool human being.

Spirit of the Waste | 7/8/2009, 4:38 pm EST

Pretty dignified response by Paul.

Collectively, we as an audience via newspapers, TV, radio, internet what have you, we reflect our far beyond repair stupidity and hunger for other people’s pain and failure.

Point would be – start with yourself – as MJ would put it – Man in the Mirror. Correct and criticize that asshole first. Once you’ve done that you’ll realize you don’t have the energy nor inclination to mock and criticize others. Too much work to be done with the one in the mirror. Try it.

Blah Blah Blah | 7/8/2009, 5:11 pm EST

Why Michael Jackson wanna rip off the Beetles? Didn’t he have enuff money from Thrilla?

mary wilson | 7/8/2009, 5:23 pm EST

I THINK MARTIN BACHIR IS VERY HAS HAPPY NOW THAT MJ IS DEAD, BECAUSE HE STARTED ALL THESE WITH HIS INTERVIEW OF MICHEAL. MJ TRUSTED HIN=M AND BROUGHT HIM INSIDE HIS PRIVATE PRIVATE LIFE THINKING HE WAS A FRIEND AND OPENUP TO HIM, IF YOU WATCH THE INTERVIEW YOU COULD SEE THAT MJ WAS REALLY COMFORTABLE WITH HIM REVEALING MANY PERSONAL ISSUES TO HIM BECAUSE HE ASKED, THER WAS EVEN A POINT WHERE MJ SAID WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME AND HE CONTINUED TO PUSH THE KNIFE DEEPER AND LISTENING TO BROOKE SHIELD YESTERDAY SAYING MJ REALLY LIKE TO LAUGH I BELIEVED HER BECAUSE YOU COULD SEE THE WAY MJ WAS LAUGHING WITH HIM DURING THE INTERVIEW, AND ALL WHAT BACHIR DID WAS TO EXPOSED MJ INTESTINS OUT TO THE WORLD.HE DID ALL THIS TO FOSTER HIS CARRER IS MARTIN REALLY HAPPY WITH THIS OUTCOME?

Paul takes the high road as usual!
good for him !

why did he want some of the Lennon/Mccartney songs turned in to
McCartney/Lennon ? That always bugged me.

Rupert Macnee | 7/8/2009, 6:43 pm EST

What goes around ALWAYS comes around

KingOfdaundaworld | 7/8/2009, 6:54 pm EST

Mike aint rip off the beatles, the Mccartney an Lennon sold their songs to ATV, Then Mike bought ATV it is what it is. Paul was respectable about the matter. He’s made more music, hell most of my HEROS lost their music a long time ago, for less, but I understand it…

njoybeat | 7/8/2009, 7:09 pm EST

Macca wanted only the songs that he wrote (with a little help from John) changed to McCartney/Lennon, not all the ones they worked on together. Probably better left alone, but if he wrote the majority of a song, he should get a bigger credit.

Ollie | 7/8/2009, 10:20 pm EST

Pauls a great guy a stand up one infact. And also paul owns the rock world they were the first for everything. Zepplin and the Beatles enough said, Other who paul doesn’t even need anymore money, and he doesn’t care about it cause in some forms of law he really still owns the masters thats just a catalog.

Sonia Elizabeth Posada Aleman | 7/8/2009, 10:21 pm EST

Well, I think that Mitchael Jackson was a very smart and unique person, who will never could be imitated by anybody else. He felt sorry for others in the Universe, the poor children, the hospitals that needed beds for the patients, the sicks with AID, my opinions aabout him is that he must be remembered by the good things he has done. He gave the best styles in the presentations of his music for his audience. God bless him, and let him rest.

Rhodes Collegiate | 7/8/2009, 10:39 pm EST

Well there’s no need to harbor bitterness over something you shouldn’t have been bitter with in the first place (if you wanted that catalogue, then you should have paid up). I’m glad Paul isn’t acting like an a-hole by going “I’m glad he died, that jerk ripped me off”. The man’s dead, you can’t turn back time, nothing can be changed, so the best thing you can do is to move on with your life.

Little Bear | 7/9/2009, 12:22 am EST

Michael Jackson was definately one of a kind and will always be remembered, but nobody and I mean nobody will ever top The Beatles. They will always be remembered as the greatest and most talented group ever.

Joe B. | 7/9/2009, 11:53 am EST

As far as this issue goes, Michael Jackson was kind of a snake.

BK | 7/9/2009, 12:31 pm EST

Paul was kind of an idiot for not buying those songs before MJ did. Paul had the money. He also planted the idea of buying the songs into MJ’s head.

Anna | 7/9/2009, 2:10 pm EST

Mary Wilson you are right
Uri Geller who said he was Michael’s friend. Received $200,000 to get Michael to do that interview. It was a trap, at the
London Zoo. They were suppose to be alone but, a ton of reports was there quest who called them. That was Great tv for Martin Bachir.
The Hold Thing Was Plan. By Martin Bachir and Uri Geller BLOOD ALL OVER THEM>

john lennon | 7/9/2009, 3:15 pm EST

im not dead

Jethro | 7/9/2009, 4:00 pm EST

MJ was an A-hole. He was super wealthy; why get into a bidding war with McCartney over the Beatles’ song rights? That struck me as extremely greedy and immoral, considering Jackson didn’t need the money, not then. He eventually did need the money, because he wasted incredible sums on drugs and gold toilet bowls. Let’s not forget all the people he stiffed for major cash either. Just sayin’.

Adam !!! | 7/9/2009, 6:56 pm EST

he didnt rip off the betales for one and two what about Ringo ? can he not have some rights or Yoko ?

stupid Paul | 7/9/2009, 7:29 pm EST

boohoo,,,,he could’nt come up with the money to buy them himself, then goes on to marry that money grubbing one legged hag,,,,only to pay her 50 million,,,,,go figure.

Bubbles the Chimp | 7/9/2009, 8:03 pm EST

Hey “stupid paul”, McCartney didn’t want to get into a bidding war over his own songs. He wouldn’t do it on principle. Yeah, principles, something Jackson apparently didn’t have – just ask his creditors.

stupid bubble the chimp | 7/9/2009, 8:17 pm EST

ummmm,,,,MJ gave more money for charities than Paul ever made,,,,hows that for principles, dork.

Mary Millions | 7/9/2009, 10:23 pm EST

Hey, finders keepers, losers weepers. That’s how it goes. MJ didn’t do anything wrong by buying the rights to the Beatles’ songs. Friendship is friendship and business is business. In fact, he should be grateful it was Michael who bought it and not Anna-Nicole Smith’s ancient billionaire husband who’d probably leave it to her in his will. Sounds crazy, but it could’ve happened. Imagine how awful THAT would be.

Ollie | 7/9/2009, 10:56 pm EST

Hey you asshole eater Stupid bubbles the chimp! No way in hell mj gave more money to charities than paul ever made. You should be smacked and your Mom to. Do you know who Paul Mccartny is? He is God he owns the rock bizz, infact he has rings worth more than mj himself, don’t clown yourself over thinking you know somthing that was a shit line to put out Beatles are the God of music even Ringo was worth more than mj and bet me if you don’t think so.

drake | 7/10/2009, 5:09 am EST

He’s not crying about nothing! He is simply making it clear that he wasn’t devastated like they said. He never believed it would be left to him anyway because he is a smart man that didn’t buy the BS rumors, did you even read it all? Paul is one of the greatest musicians ever, show some respect!!! Now the other Jackson’s can get rich off Beatles songs, do they all give alot to Charity????

sal.pix | 7/10/2009, 10:40 am EST

nobody knows how to handle these asshole media people better than any of the four beatles,(dead or alive respectfully),you 21 first century entertainers should take notes, you phony’s.and you negative morons born after 1980, you don’t even have a clue what you missed,so shut up and go do some good in this phony world..(oh yeah beyonce shut your big mouth..see ya!

sal.pix | 7/10/2009, 11:01 am EST

it’s sad some of these modern entertainers(beyonce)can’t see beyond their nose,i respect MJ along with a host of other greats modern or not.but to make it sound like MJ changed the world more than any other musician is arrogent, paul and the lads did more to change music, fashion, ideas, attitudes towards black musicians they were the first group to come out and say they listened and liked black music so get a life,by the way george harrison was the first musician to start using fame to help the less fortunate, but you would’nt know that eh! Beyonce b.s.

Mountain | 7/10/2009, 12:50 pm EST

Hey Ollie, MJ is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most charities supported by a single celebrity. Paul McCartney, NOT. You wanna worship your God named Paul, fine, but make sure you got your facts straight so you don’t sound like a fanboy.

Matt | 7/11/2009, 6:48 pm EST

So Michael Jackson advertised the fact he gave to charities, thats cool, but not all who give to charities want it known. John & Paul got ripped off in 1963, when young & naive, their manager advised them to sign away their rights to the songs. They had a chance to buy them back in the 70s but I think John didnt act or something. Since then, to his credit, rather than try to get them back solo, Paul has always tried to involve Yoko, which has made it even harder for him to organise. He’ll never get them back off Sony.

Bubbles the Chimp | 7/11/2009, 8:35 pm EST

Maybe Michael Jackson should have donated money to charities AFTER he paid his bills. Don’t tell me how he donated money to charity when he had to liquidate his assets just to stay afloat. That’s not generous, it’s irresponsible and stupid.

Bubbles the Chimp | 7/11/2009, 8:54 pm EST

The idea that Jackson went bankrupt because he was too charitable is ridiculous. It’s estimated that his debts are between $300-$500 MILLION. He didn’t even pay my veterinary bills. The vet claims she is owed $91,602 in unpaid bills. I’m sure I can eat a lot of bananas for $300 million. I think I’ll take out a loan.

Amy Chandler | 7/14/2009, 12:17 pm EST

Paul has this in perspective. He still has more money than he has time to spend it. If he does the tour with Ringo, Julian, and Dhanni he’ll have shitloads more.
And he has his legend – which can’t be bought for any price.
He’s put this stuff and Mills in the past, and he’s moving forward.
What good is Michael’s money to Michael now? What good are John and Georges’ record royalties to them now? Life is for living, and Paul still has a lot of great new and old music to share with us.

MG | 7/14/2009, 6:25 pm EST

Goodnes some of you people are complete and utter IDIOTS!!!First of all how is Michael a snake? He paid for the rights to that music. If Paul wanted them he should have bought the rights himself. Michael did what he did as an investment. Isn’t that what normal business people do? Duh!!!Just because he made millions off THRILLER doesn’t mean he stops investing.. And regarding Bashir , he is an asshole that totally took a statement and twisted up into what later become the molestastion scheme. If you watch that interview Michael stated many times that he slept on the floor in a sleeping bag!!! Never did he say he slept in the same bed with that child. He shared his bed with his guest and he slept on the floor. People how hard is that to comprehend? Brashir manipulated the entire interview… If you read on the mother of those kids Michael paid for that kids treatment, and that worthless mother was also being investigated for FRAUD within the government. HMMMMM. Shows how honest she is.. But yet you are willing to cast stones on a topic that you do not have the facts on and lay blame or presume guilt… Well that’s not you’re right… Michael Jackson is an Icon and no one will ever compare. Yes the Beatles are very popular as a group.. But as a single artist no one will ever stand close to the king of pop! So you people need to get over it and stop being so damn naïve and beliving in people that are snakes and liars. RIP MJ

Ya | 8/4/2009, 4:20 pm EST

MJ is kind of weird.

Paul McCartney is the best.

It’s that simple.

whoa | 8/4/2009, 4:21 pm EST

y would mj do that. GOsh.

truthfully enough | 8/4/2009, 4:26 pm EST

mj was unique and all but the beatles are way better anyways.

storiesbyjuly | 9/29/2009, 4:39 pm EST

You have to be kidding. All of you. Charitable or not, he was a pedophile, or have we all forgotten? Buying the rights out from under Paul, when he had every intention of buying them, was wrong but a good business venture. I think he’s a prick for doing it, but I have better moral values than Michael Jackson, dead or alive. It was very good of him to give away kind amounts of his HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, but he’s not saint for it. Anyone who makes that much money should give away the majority of it. They can’t spend it in their lifetime, or at the very least they shouldn’t. It’s excessive and pathetic. Clearly they can’t take it with them. Michael Jackson was an alright musician, and did progressive things for pop music and music videos. The Beatles REVOLUTIONIZED NATIONS and MUSIC as we know it! Jackson was disturbed and his funeral was a gross display of opulence, I would have been ashamed. The End.
