Panic At the Disco’s Urie and Smith Tell Fans Band Is “Alive and Well”

A day after Panic at the Disco’s Ryan Ross and Jon Walker announced on MySpace that they were leaving the band, Panic’s two remaining members, frontman Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith, calmed fans’ fears by saying the group will carry on and not cancel their upcoming tour dates. “Panic At The Disco is alive and very very well. We are working on new songs that we are excited for you to hear,” the remaining Panic pair wrote on MySpace. “Our dates with Blink-182 and No Doubt start in a little less than a month, and we wouldn’t miss those for the world.”

“We just wanted to let you know, that the news of Ryan and Jon leaving the band is unfortunately true. It’s been an amazing journey being in a band with them, but sometimes individual tastes take friends in different directions and you can’t ignore it,” Panic wrote, echoing Ross and Walker’s statements that creative differences fueled their exit from the group. “They are some of the most talented guys we know, and we’re sure that whatever they do next will be great. We know everybody has a lot of questions at this point with everything being so out of the blue, most of those should be answered in the coming weeks. We appreciate every one of you, and hope you continue with us on this incredible ride.”

Urie and Smith concluded their post by teasing fans with a pair of cryptic statements: “Pay attention we have a surprise in store for you” and “PS we were cleaning out the practice space and you’ll never guess what we found!” Thus far, guesses for what the band found range from two new members to Panic’s previously deleted exclamation point. According to Spencer Smith’s Twitter, Panic were in the studio yesterday toiling on two new songs (Twitpic proof), then wrapped a hard day of work by playing Mortal Kombat II.

The should hire Emo Phillips to be one of the replacements… Then they’d be the most emo band ever.

panicforever | 7/8/2009, 11:04 am EST

I can’t believe this still…..Panic At the Disco will never be the same….I’m still going to support the boys no matter what…I just wish they wouldn’t break up…

GG | 7/8/2009, 11:16 am EST

File this under, who cares?

BK | 7/8/2009, 11:37 am EST

Time to hang it up!

Mr ha ha | 7/8/2009, 11:51 am EST

Yes Now if Fall Out Boy does the same than the world will be rid of two of the worst bands in existance.

matt in farmers branch | 7/8/2009, 12:16 pm EST

They should get Flea to play bass and Jimmy Page to play guitar.

:) | 7/8/2009, 1:50 pm EST

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHHAAHAHAH!

Megan | 7/8/2009, 2:15 pm EST

People who want to make fun of Panic at the Disco should stfu! Seriously guys, I bet you have no musical talent at all, who are you to judge? Brendon and Spencer are gonna do just fine.. I wish that Ryan and Jon would re-think their desision of course. Ryan is a great lyricist and the band won’t really be “Panic at the disco” without him. It’s very sadenning. And Jon’s wit and humor will be missed, not to mention his bass playing! I hope Panic at the Disco does well and you people have to eat your words! Good luck Brendon and Spencer! I love you guys so much and Panic at the Disco will always be my favorite band!

STFU hater! | 7/8/2009, 2:55 pm EST

I really, really don’t like this band. They’re as bad as Fall Out Boy.

Shiloh | 7/8/2009, 3:05 pm EST

Why are people even reading this article? just so they can say “yay/i hate this band/good riddance”. i honestly dont know why people will hate on other people like. Dont listen to it if you dont like it! And FOB is awesome too btw.

Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 3:32 pm EST

I’m still waiting for the awesome supergroup: Widespread Panic At The Limp Disco Biscuits.

Bozo the Janitor | 7/8/2009, 3:34 pm EST

Rest in Peace Wacko Jacko. Because now we have to put up with garbage like Panic at the Disco. :-(

Thaymes | 7/8/2009, 3:46 pm EST

FOB used to be cool… until they got big and Pete Wentz became a douche. As a result of that, the music took a SERIOUS backslide. I don’t think I’ll be crying a river if these guys break up too.

Sgt. Pepper! | 7/8/2009, 4:20 pm EST

It’s a shame that the core of the band is leaving. Even if you are an emo hater like the posters below, You can’t deny the fact that they put a brilliant album. If Panic had released Pretty Odd. as their first album, they would have undoubtedly enjoyed a more positive criticism from the general public. It’s unfortunate that people still regard the band as the child of the “emo gods” Fallout Boy. With the release of Pretty Odd. Panic has established themselves as their own band and has discarded the remnants of their “emo” past.

VeryBusyBrian | 7/8/2009, 5:01 pm EST

Honestly, fob and panic are two different bands. This article isn’t about, nor intended to reflect the PR of the music- its a news update. If you don’t like either of them, then go listen to your “august burns red” and feel like a bamf as you drink your rockstar.

Long live PATD! | 7/8/2009, 5:07 pm EST

Wow I think this is absolutely horrible! They are like the best band out there! I don’t really think you can compare them to FOB because they are nothing alike. And why even waste your time reading this article if you are just going to talk crap about them. Don’t you have anything better to do?! I wish PATD the best!

Kill | 7/8/2009, 5:46 pm EST

omg people who call Panic are just pathetic and have no life! why waste your time calling them, this means you probally dont have one. just let people who like them get on with this terrible news without you calling them. its your own opinion. Good luck Panic, you’ve lost my 2 fav one’s int band especially John Walker :’(! hope him and Ryan Ross have fun doing what ever they want to do next :)
LOVE YOU!

Jesse | 7/8/2009, 6:06 pm EST

Agreeing with a whole bunch of people below me, panic and fob are not the same band at all and its a shame anyone’s leaving the band considering what they were starting to experiment with musically. They could work on their lyrics though (a little too cutesy on the non-singles)

Victoriah Love Dead | 7/8/2009, 6:07 pm EST

Its quite ashame that the guitarist and bassist had to leave.. but alas, Brandon and Spencer are very talented. A band is nothing without the vocals and the heart beat of music, the drummer. They will find replacements, best wishes to the 2 unfortunates who had to leave.

STFU hater! | 7/8/2009, 6:08 pm EST

I posted on here to voice my dislike of Panic and FOB because I wanted to spread my displeasure with them to the world, and hopefully convince and convert others to disliking them, also.

If you don’t like reading my comments then why do you bother? Do you have nothing better to do then post and complain about how you don’t like my comments?

One dream | 7/8/2009, 7:00 pm EST

Not that I care much for this band, but here’s what I wonder.. why is it that bands today break up far sooner and more easily than the bands of yesteryears? The one thing that has never changed since the concept of a band has existed is that it won’t be all fun & games 100% of the time, you’ll have to make compromises, sometimes you’ll feel like strangling each other but you’ve got to realize that’s how working with other people is. In other words, it’s just like a marriage. And bands from the past were much better at toughing it out than those of today. Could it be because back then bands did not become huge from the get-go, it would take years of hard work and slowly building up a fanbase before finally achieving success, whereas today 18-year-olds form a band and then get signed like a year later? Most of these new bands are made up of people not old enough to drink or even old enough to sign a contract without their parents’ permission. So they have no maturity, they’re not really prepared to properly deal with fame and success. And the fact that the fame and success happens overnight, as opposed to it slowly happening over the course of a few years, makes it even harder for the band members to be level-headed about it. Therefore, no real sacrifices are made, no one really appreciates their success or values each other. It’s why bands fall apart after just barely 2 records. It’s sad, really.

Reinvented Love | 7/8/2009, 7:10 pm EST

I’m not going to yell at all the losers who talk crap about Panic, or Fall Out Boy. Think about this though, Think about YOUR favorite band, in your ENTIRE life. Got it?
Now imagine, out of the blue, two of them get up, and leave. How would you feel? This isn’t about saying your opinion on the band. This is about feeling the fans pain. I just don’t think it’s right of you to make a opinion like that, while people like me are hurting so bad about this. I know that might sound stupid. But I guess sometimes, being right is stupid. I’ll miss them so much. My life feels incomplete without them. It’s like chopping off an arm and a leg, and then replacing them with fake limbs. It won’t ever be the same. I think Panic at the Disco, will either pull a Blink182 on us and get back together, or Brendon and Spencer will give up on holding it together, and let it die a slow, painful death. That’s all I have to say on this matter.

Liz | 7/8/2009, 10:44 pm EST

okay, i know ALOT of people don’t like Panic, but REALLY? if you hate them so friggen much, then why are you here in the first place?
Also, Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco are TWO DIFFERENT BANDS.
Stop bringing FOB into something that has NOTHING to do with them.
Anyway,
I feel sad to see Jon and Ryan go, but hopefully Brendon and Spencer can move on and keep Panic alive instead of letting it die a slow and painful death.

ah | 7/9/2009, 12:07 am EST

THIS IS SO SAD! i cant believe its true!

Colin | 7/9/2009, 12:29 am EST

Ya know, I have two things to say about Panic. One good, one bad.

Good: they make an honest and generally successful effort to make music that has thoughtful, original lyrics and they write about subject matter that extends beyond your typical pop-rock band.

Bad: their most recent album was a complete mirror image of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was actually surprisingly obvious to me that they were trying to channel the Peppers-era Beatles. I thought the tunes were pretty good – catchy, fun, different from mainstream trends. But each song almost entirely followed the path of Sgt. Pepper.

But, then again, I’ll take a band influenced by the Beatles any day.

I’m a tough critic of music, and – I know what I say doesn’t matter – but the critics of Panic should give their albums a full, thoughtful listen. If you still think it sucks, that’s fine. But I think you might find some stuff in there that you get turned on to.

The Intl | 7/9/2009, 12:38 am EST

who cares about this piece of shit band?

Rhi | 7/9/2009, 1:26 am EST

My decline of interest of Panic at the Disco began with their horrible album Pretty. Odd. and now two members are leaving?! Wow. To think that at one point I loved this band is hilarious. What-fucking-ever.

lol | 7/9/2009, 2:49 am EST

Hhahahahahahahahahhahah i honestly dont think anyone could care less. By splitting up this pathetic band who make the worst music ever is doing the world a favour…

taye. | 7/9/2009, 4:32 am EST

To the idiot below me, SOME PEOPLE DO CARE! For fucks sake, this band has fans you know and a pretty big fan base too. Their first album went double platinum, and yeah i’ll admit the second one was’nt as great but it grew on you, so go on and listen to your gettoh ass shit, or fuck the world music, or dare i say jonas brothers cuz us fans do really dont want to hear your shit on how ‘pussy-ish’ they are

thank you and have nice life

Not Great Loss | 7/9/2009, 8:52 am EST

Can’t say I’m shedding any tears. Their music always did kind of suck.

bennie new york | 7/9/2009, 11:37 am EST

Yeah I’m not to shaken up about this either. I don’t shed tears for the unraveling of one-hit emo bands, though I do like some of Panic’s music. They are essentially finished though cuz they lost their cheif songwriter in Ryan Ross. It might actually be safe to say that emo itself is unraveling with Panic falling apart and Fall Out Boy falling off commercially. Once again, I am shedding no tears. RIP Emo

Y'all..... | 7/9/2009, 11:46 am EST

….want a real band? Check out U2.

All I know is pain | 7/9/2009, 3:43 pm EST

This is like the worst day of my life, even more than yesterday. I was too sad to eat my bowl of emo flakes this morning. I was too sad to get up with my not friend cutter to mope around and be sad. I think I will put on some dasboard confessional and write some really shitty emo poetry about hating my dad.

bella | 7/9/2009, 7:25 pm EST

i dont want to read all that at the top can someone just tell me what happen

bella | 7/9/2009, 7:28 pm EST

hey u2 kid have u seen harpers island with the episod at the end cant figure out if that them tell me im bella/

armchair emotions | 7/9/2009, 8:31 pm EST

it takes acquired minds to like panic’s music..
id rather listen to this “shit” you call “emo” than listen to bands that scream nd growl all they want because they’re too angry cuz they cant actually sing nd call it music..
kudos to this band who actually make an artistic take on music rather than just making noise..
panic will move on..and im excited for both parties. .

Anonymous | 7/9/2009, 8:48 pm EST

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
I thought we were getting rid them..

Santaa. | 7/9/2009, 10:20 pm EST

wow.
how come people talk about how people have bad taste if they like a certain band? people dont say crap to you fer hating them(unless you insult them first..), so you should try to put them down fer liking them…
you have the right to dislike them, we hve the right to like them. we should have the right to like them and not be made fun of, but some people who cant think of anything to do but insult and label people who they havent met wont let that happen.

Vcr | 7/10/2009, 9:12 am EST

That is, check out U2 between 80′ and 92′. After that, don’t bother.

deano | 7/10/2009, 6:03 pm EST

Yea FOB sucks now, but what does that have to do with Panic! at the disco? … nothing. They don’t even make the same music. I’m still sad about Panic! splitting in half .. They were my favorite band for yearss rip panic!

Megan | 7/12/2009, 3:18 pm EST

Plus EMO BAND!? not even. They wrote great music. Pretty Odd didn’t have depressing music at all. Learn your genres guys before you make uninformed comments.. gosh losers!

now im mad bec. will ryan and jon be on the tour? i dont think they will be.

DrainBamage | 7/12/2009, 11:48 pm EST

“They’re not emo, they’re, they’re, they not emo, ok you guys!”

Hate to break it to you people, but they ARE emo, they just take it to another level. Why else would the only people who are upset over this news be 16 year old girls?

Emo doesn’t necessarily have to be depressing, as long as the lead singer is whiny enough, and the music is watered down, then you have a perfect recipe for emo.

I’m glad to hear this band is breaking up. They wrote stupid songs w/ some of the worst lyrics I’ve ever heard. Maybe a worthy band will get some attention now.

LoopGuru | 7/13/2009, 12:06 am EST

Panic who?

marty mcfly | 7/13/2009, 8:44 am EST

So they’re not breaking up?? That’s really unfortunate. I hope this is at least the beginning of the end – this band is insufferable.

Good Thing | 7/13/2009, 8:46 am EST

Good thing we all don’t like the exact same genres of music. Otherwise it’d be Jonas Brothers and Brittney Spears all the time. So quit being morons, all of you. Panic! blows in my opinion, but it’s exactly that, MY OPINION. The kid next door may love Panic as he’s slitting his wrists. Who cares, listen if you like and don’t if you don’t.

SHELBY | 7/16/2009, 2:10 pm EST

HeY!YOU PANIC AT THE DISCO HATERS,GET OUT OF THIS PAGE NOW!!!ALL HERE WE’RE SUPPORTERS OF THIS BAND.WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT?#!**??

panic!fan | 7/18/2009, 3:22 pm EST

The genre is hardly considered emo. Their music is creative and fun to listen to with great vocals. I can’t see why some (IDIOTIC) people dislike them, but I’m probably figuring it’s because of closed minds. Right now, our generation’s radio is currently filled to the brim with candy pop, Disney backed stars, and rap with all the same ideas over and over again. I have nothing against those genres, though their not my favorites because I prefer alternative music, but I don’t go slam Lil Wayne or whatever because I think his music is overrated. If you don’t care for them, then don’t read or comment on their news. Go get a life instead of insisting that they aren’t good when in fact, their amazing.

I’m sticking by Panic at the Disco through and through and I know that all the band members, where ever they end up, will do well. I love the first and second album (especially the first), and I’ll continue to love this amazing band.

lol as upset as I was by this w few weeks ago, Its kinda funny to read all these hate comments.
i mean….don’t you guys have lives?
Panic at the disco was my favorite band. ever. I’ve been with them since Fever and I loooove Pretty.Odd. Their music has inspired me to pick up a guitar and work even harder in my piano lessons. Their music has seen me through all the ups in down of my life, and they were more then just a band to me. Because their message was to ‘reinvent love’ and be HAPYY!
sorry….does that sound emo to ANYONE cuz it sure as hell doesn’t to me.
RIP PATD. you guys will always be in my heart!!!
and i love The Young Veins and the new Panic! at the Disco….so it’s all good!
reinvent love!!!!!!!!!!
