Lita Ford Returns With “Sexual” LP, Explains Runaways Movie Rift

Until recently, heavy metal’s leading female rocker has been laying a bit low. In addition to being the guitarist for the Runaways in the ’70s, Lita Ford was responsible for two solo pop metal hits in the ’80s: “Kiss Me Deadly,” and a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, “Close My Eyes Forever.” But with a new album on the horizon, Wicked Wonderland (out September 15th via Ford’s own label, JLRG Entertainment), Ford is back. “What happened was I got married to Jim Gillette [ex-singer of über hair metallists, Nitro], and he and I started ‘island hopping,’ ” she says. “We found these fantastic islands out in the Caribbean. At that same time, I was pregnant with our second child. We wanted a good, safe place to raise our kids. We ended up moving to the Caribbean — right after 9/11 — where we built this massive house, and we’ve lived there since then.”

A few months ago, Ford hooked up with producer Greg Hampton, and work began on Wicked Wonderland (co-produced by Ford, Gillette, and Hampton), her first studio release since 1995. “The new album is extremely heavy, extremely sexual. I would say it’s my best album yet. As soon as you hear the vocals and lead guitar, you know it’s Lita. But at the same time, it’s completely different, because it’s so heavy.” While Ford describes the entire album as “slamming” — as proven by such cuts as “Scream” and “Betrayal” — it’s the album’s lone ballad that stands out for her. ” ‘Sacred’ is probably my favorite track, because it was written for me from my husband. It’s a beautiful song.”

Recently, Ford has also hit the road for select shows, and is planning more gigs for the fall. In addition to reviving her music career, Ford recently lent her voice to the upcoming video game, Brütal Legend, which also features the voices of Jack Black, Lemmy Kilmister, and Rob Halford, as well as the aforementioned Lita song, “Betrayal.” “I’m ‘Queen Rima’ in the game — the queen of my troops,” she says. “We go out to kick some ass. I get axed, electrocuted, and thrown off a second story building… and I manage to survive the whole thing!”

Ford also offered her thoughts on the upcoming Runaways movie, Cherry Bomb, which features Twilight star Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. “I just want people to know that I have nothing to do with that film,” Ford clarifies. “Joan’s manager offered to buy the rights to my life story for a thousand bucks. I thought that was pretty disgusting — we never even replied.”

That said, is Lita still in touch with Joan? And could they ever work together again? “Well, I just gave you an answer about what I thought of their film. Their manager has managed to cause a war between us — this has been going on since 1985. So far, I’ve kept my mouth shut, and I don’t know how somebody like him can spend so much time trying to destroy somebody else’s career. Joan and I have done nothing to hurt each other. I’ve always loved Joan. I don’t know what the problem is with him — he really goes out of his way to fuck me up. I despise him for it. But there’s a place in my heart for Joan that will always be there.”

I LOVE YOU LITA!!

I love Lita but.... | 7/8/2009, 2:21 pm EST

She’s disgusted by a thousand dollar offer for her life story but freely lends her voice to a video game.

Hamm I Am | 7/8/2009, 2:46 pm EST

Oh…I somehow doubt she did a voiceover on a video game cause she “just likes them.” I’m sure she got paid well for her effort. It’s not like she has a house in the Caribbean thanks to her last album sales.

Anonymous | 7/8/2009, 2:52 pm EST

I’m sure the video game voice work pays far more than $1k.

…what it boils down to is money.

Nosnhoj Nilremus | 7/8/2009, 3:51 pm EST

I have been a loyal fan of both Lita Ford and Joan Jett since the Runaways and I must say that I am disgusted. If a movie about the Runaways is being made, it should have been cleared through the other members before going into production. The fact that they only offered 1000 for the rights to her life story is insulting. Joan Jett should be ashamed to have her name anywhere associated with this movie. The manager that was responsible for the Runaways break-up should have his balls pressed in a vice. All in all, I think that no matter what you think of any of the women that were in that band, you should have more respect for them than to make rude comments about what they are doing in their life now. And who cares if she got paid to do the v/o in a video game? Do you really think that all the people that lend their voices to a video game do it for free? Get real people!

Sky | 7/8/2009, 3:55 pm EST

I hope this record offers some real grittiness. When I watch her videos from her career high, in the 80s, I want to root for her, but at the same time her music was no different than the glam metal bands at that time. She didn’t stand out, except for the fact that she’s a chick. So no wonder she only had 2 hits. Being a woman in rock music is hard enough, at least prove that you can rock hard like all the rest, albeit in a unique way. Cause look at Joan Jett. She’s more of a badass rocker than most of the guys out there.

Real | 7/8/2009, 4:00 pm EST

Then don’t EVER call any other band or artist a sellout.

Old man Larkin | 7/8/2009, 6:16 pm EST

I am really glad someone is fimnally making the story of the rinaways film, and the actors look REMARKABLY like the Ruanaways in the pics. I am Sad that Jackie Fox and Lita Ford are somewhat cut out of the movie, i.e. the basic story line is based on Cherie Currie’s autobiography, but they aren’t using any of the 5 or so bass player’s real names due to the movie “Edgeplay” made by two of them. Now Lita has no input either. Sad.

Ollie | 7/8/2009, 10:22 pm EST

I love you to. Duet with ozzy again?

Joseph | 7/8/2009, 10:40 pm EST

OMFG!
she looks horrible

Jon the Moonspinner | 7/9/2009, 12:10 am EST

Lita looks fantastic!! She was never some half-assed Madonna-wannabe, she was a Rock Chick. She’s a trailblazer, a hellraiser, and she led the way for all the other Rock Chicks. I wish she was more involved with the film, and I wish she and Cherie Currie had a better relationship after all this time, but just because you’re in a band together doesn’t make you family. I want Lita to have only the best and hope “Wicked” tears it up!!!!

Bohemian | 7/9/2009, 2:45 am EST

Lita looks like a tranny….
She should have taken that thousand bucks, because no one will ever make a film about her life story.

Ali Beer-Line | 7/9/2009, 8:44 am EST

Yikes, tell those in charge to lay off the Photoshop…look at her jaw line!

Hock Ptooey | 7/9/2009, 9:59 am EST

I’ve give ol’ Lita a shove.

Schultz | 7/9/2009, 11:54 am EST

She’s not looking so hot these days, Pshop or not; time has not been kind.

Nikki6 | 7/9/2009, 12:27 pm EST

Lita is cool. who cares what someone thinks about her looks. When anyone thinks of a woman in heavy metal…its always Lita. Enough said.

Raven Roberts | 7/9/2009, 12:33 pm EST

1,000 dollars for rights for her life for the movie offer, what the beep beep, is Kenny thinking???
It should of been more than a million, since The Runaways are responsible for breaking barriers, and bringing more women into playing guitar , etc for the past three decades. I know cause Im one, if it werent for Them, The Runaways, I wouldnt be singing and playing guitar for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Raven

hmmm | 7/9/2009, 12:41 pm EST

i have read that “they” have tried to make this movie for years. were ready to go, then production halted. the money then went to make “josie and the pussycats” because industry experts said it was the right time for a “girl rock” film.

Thundercrotch | 7/9/2009, 1:46 pm EST

I Love Herman Munster…er, I mean Lita Ford. Yikes!

who what.. | 7/9/2009, 2:06 pm EST

hey, being in a band the manager takes control of your brain, example: Simon C,
so, Joan is just a body do all sad, I wont go see the movie, unless the two get back together.

People Suck | 7/10/2009, 12:40 am EST

Lita was good in the 80’s but get real, she’ll never have another hit.

Jettrocker@gmail.com | 7/10/2009, 2:23 am EST

I think Lita was obviously exaggerating when she said “a thousand bucks”. Lita has her own issues with control and I think that’s where the rift with her and Kenny come from. There are a LOT of stories about Lita being extremely nasty and bitter regarding Joans success and Kenny’s involvement. Joan went through an extremely rough time when she was booted from the Runaways. Reports of suicide and very heavy drug use and incoherent acts and careless behavior pop up every little while and I am buddies with her roommate after the Runaways broke up. I wonder if the movie will focus accurately on those tragic issues and the pitiful ion Joan was in. She was so sick from drinking and Quaaludes that she had to stay in the hospital for a “Heart Valve Infection” in 1978. I hope the film is humble.

Graell | 7/10/2009, 8:30 am EST

I ran security for a Joan Jett show once when she was still fairly popular solo. Now granted that doesn’t make me an expert, but that day she took my top prize for ‘Worst Most Bitchy Star Ever!” We all referred to her as the Warthog, given how she was looking, but her constant ridiculous and impossible to meet demands and nasty attitude, and temper tantrums were what really sunk her rep with us. Her manager was even worse. Frankly if they both fell off the planet never to reappear, I’d be quite happy.

dlt | 7/10/2009, 8:31 am EST

Manipulating, egomaniacal conservative boys like Kim Fowley don’t like it when their girls leave town, go lesbo. Lita Ford’s always been a dame, and who can’t love Joan Jett?

old bag | 7/10/2009, 9:22 am EST

alot of comments on how bad Lita looks. That’s because they slathered her face with makeup and pulled her hair way back trying to give the illusion of “youth” Her natural beauty is superior to the touch of that nasty makeup person.

Tallulah Gein | 7/10/2009, 4:10 pm EST

I am very excited about The Runaways movie. The photos I’ve seen have captured the ’70s perfectly. Joan is actively invovled on set with Kristen Stewart, so it will most likely be her version of the story.

Lita is smart to have a new CD out to promote when the movie comes out. Lita is a 50 year old mother of two. She looks FABULOUS! And I’m sure she’ll still kick down the walls when she plays live.

Great Balls of Fire | 7/10/2009, 7:55 pm EST

Lita’s a living legend!
She rocks harder than most guys!
Show some respect for the Queen!

slingshot | 7/10/2009, 8:36 pm EST

“Edgeplay” was fantastic, in spite of J.Jett tring to sabotage it by blocking access to the Runaway’s music. It’s just so sad they couldn’t have done a reunion while Sandy West was still alive.

Abacab | 7/11/2009, 10:22 am EST

Grow up Lita.

Steve | 7/11/2009, 10:28 pm EST

Its not like they’re buying her life…its just the details of her life during the 70’s. She should grow up.

Beltway Greg | 7/12/2009, 8:38 am EST

Joan Jett is one of rock’s unsung great stars who, despite being popular, should’ve garnered much more in regard to record sales and critical acclaim. I saw her open for the Police in 1982 at the mid-south Coliseum in Memphis and she owned the crowd so much so that when the Police appeared the crowd shouted for Joan. When I was in the military she did a number of USO shows long before the military became popular. If she comes to your town go and see her. You’ll get to see one of the rock greats up there with The Stones and Zep.
Lita is interesting but I don’t think Joan has ever gone out of print, been forced to ride a trend, or adopt one of those air brushed-sexual poses that are forced on female rockers. Jett oozes sex just by blowing her nose. She can come to DC when she’s 80 and I’ll still be there with the ladies in leather fighting for my share.

What'dyouthink | 7/12/2009, 10:33 am EST

“The new album is extremely heavy, extremely sexual.”

A 50 year old verses a 20 year old….sexual turn on? I think not. Bag it…keep raising da kids.

comeonnn | 7/12/2009, 10:48 am EST

Sounds like someone is running low on cash.

civa666 | 7/14/2009, 11:31 am EST

I saw Lita play a show at an amusement park in El Paso Tx back in the early 90’s. It was her and CC Devile from Poison. She was god damn awful!
Joan Jett however kicks ass every time. I’ve seen Joan 3 times and every time she didn’t disappoint.
The truth is this, Lita became a hairband supermodel in the 80’s. No one ever really took her music seriously because she never took her music seriously. She just followed what was popular. I can only imgaine the turd of a CD she’s going to release.
She should have done the Runaways reunion when she had the chance!

wooot | 7/14/2009, 1:51 pm EST

They can have my life story for a $1000!

Trust me. It’s more interesting than any rock stars. Sex, drugs, rock and roll, ghosts. (long story).

LoopGuru | 7/14/2009, 3:09 pm EST

If I were behind “Kiss Me Deadly” and “Close My Eyes Forever”, I’d have hidden away for a decade too. And please, Lita, let your album be better than your something-about-Mary hair or the cake your makeup guy baked on your face for that shot above. The Lita we loved was the hard-edged, no-nonsense gal like the one that just said (correctly) that Joan Jett’s manager hurts her career daily. More smash less flash please.

C'mon | 7/14/2009, 7:50 pm EST

Joan Jett’s manager has a bad name for his reputation.
Nasty Bastard!!

The Runaways had a wonderful legendary history after all. Who cares about just Cherie’s story?
It shouldn’t be called “The Runaways” movie. It’s Cherie Currie story, and everyone should have their own stories.

C’mon, Kenny laguna, stop being so greedy. The Runaways ain’t just about Joan Jett. There were 5 of them!!

halen | 7/14/2009, 8:03 pm EST

Joan’s manager is just way too greedy!

DORF | 7/14/2009, 8:56 pm EST

Lita always thought she was this badass rocker but her albums (especially her later work) were nothing but sappy AOR-type ballads. I hope her new album does kick ass, but for now the Queen Of Heavy Metal is still Doro Pesch.

Joe | 7/14/2009, 9:33 pm EST

Lita rules – always has – always will!

FEMBOT | 7/15/2009, 1:38 am EST

Lita didn’t think she was a badass rocker.
She IS a bad ass rocker.
She is the ONLY female rocker inducted into the CIRCUS magazine hall of fame.
She was 7 years straight the Hit Parader Magazines #1 female rocker….
There’s plenty of room for both Lita and Joan. Hell – I like them both and I buy both of their albums. What’s up with this Kenny idiot?
He thinks if someone buys the Lita album they won’t buy the Joan album?

Hetro | 7/17/2009, 12:07 pm EST

Lita kicks Joan’s ass all over the stage!
What little Joan can play – she learned from Lita.
Long live the Queen!

Geoff Rocks | 7/18/2009, 2:04 pm EST

I’ve always loved Lita and Joan. I feel like they are both AWESOME at what they do. Sure , I’d love to see them together again. I’ll still buy both their CD’s anyway. Perhaps us Fans should just grow up and understand that things don’t always work out with Bands.

Cherry Lush | 7/20/2009, 11:27 am EST

Lita’s alleged issues are nothing compared to the control issues from the Jett camp and the stories are legendary. Supposedly Jett’s management made demands that made a Runaways Reunion Tour impossible.

Beltway Greg | 7/20/2009, 1:26 pm EST

I’m not sure who controls the band’s name but if it isn’t Joan the solution is simple. Since everybody will pay so much to her Lita and the girls put them out on the road without Joan. If Joan does indeed control the name you can call it something like the New Runaways sort of like the New Cars with Todd Rundgren. The kids really turned out to see that as Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek we pretty much the Cars. Either way put-up or shut-up.

Tallulah Gein | 7/21/2009, 7:55 pm EST

I love Joan & Lita, but there will never be a Runaways reunion! Joan tours constantly and makes money from that and from her back catalog, which is constantly reissued. There is no reason for her to do it. Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna are executive producers on The Runaways movie, so Joan can ensure that it is done to her liking. Joan really was the star to emerge from the band.

Lita is smart to have a new CD out in time for the movie though. I bet Joan won’t. She doesn’t seem too interested in recording new material. Maybe she can make some money from touring too. Hey, Jackie Fox won’t even be depicted in the movie. They’re using a fictional bass player character named Robin!

fanna1968 | 7/29/2009, 3:45 am EST

Jim Gillette (Lita’s hubby) has made a TRUCKLOAD of money in the past few years (none of it in the music industry), so no one is short of money. Okay, maybe Cherie Currie…..(face it, “Neon Angel” didn’t exactly hit the bestseller list!)

As far as people taking Lita’s music seriously, a lot of us did. I loved her self titled CD, plus “Dangerous Curves.” I saw her in concert with Motley Crue back in 1990, and she did not disappoint at all. Grunge rock did a LOT of metal bands in during the 1990’s, and it was time for the party to stop.

As far as her album being more “sexual”, what of it? People in their 50’s aren’t exactly in wheelchairs lamenting their lost youth–look at Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, hell–the ROLLING STONES!! The pic of Lita here is not the best one taken. If anyone got to see her on Eddie Trunk’s radio show (see YouTube) or “That Metal Show” can see that Lita is as beautiful as ever. Being a wife and mom really agrees with her. She’s happy now and it genuinely shows.

Lysa | 8/2/2009, 5:19 am EST

Lita rules. Saw her at Monndance this year and she was incredible. Her new songs are great. She signed stuff for me and my friends and was very nice. Her hubby was very cool and her kids are adorable. Go Lita!

Jett can't play | 8/2/2009, 5:14 pm EST

Joan Jett can’t play guitar – Lita plays the hell out of a guitar! Joan likes women – Lita’s married to a MAN! Jett has short black hair – Lita has long blonde hair. Lita has 7 Hit Parader female entertainer of the year awards – Joan has none. They’re polar opposites. Why would Joan’s manager mess with Lita – they’re apples and oranges! Couldn’t be more different if they tried!

Jason Vance | 8/15/2009, 9:53 pm EST

all i can say is that
Lita Ford she is a goddess and
I am for 1 glad that she is back
Rockin and to kick ass into

dicey63 | 10/25/2009, 12:33 pm EST

it was lita and joan that kept the runaways sounding good…they were by certain the most talented of the group…cheri lol is just trying to make a buck..her career went south after the runaways!

DruidessKat | 11/16/2009, 10:04 am EST

I think it’s a shame that no one could get all 5 members of The Runaways involved in the movie. I’ll still see it but I’m not so sure I trust Cherie’s solo point of view. She seemed to have different versions of nearly every story told in Edgeplay.

I WILL be getting Lita’s new album though. She’s been an idol of mine since I was a wee metal bitch. I’ll always have huge respect for her.
